The Sword Beyond Gensokyo
Hào Shūxiāo was never supposed to end up in Gensokyo.
Eighteen years old and living an ordinary life as a first-year university student in Japan, Hào has little interest in standing out. He is calm, easygoing, and surprisingly content with a simple life. He goes to class, walks home, enjoys his own hobbies, and keeps the strange secret of his previous life buried where no one can find it.
Because Hào remembers dying.
And he remembers everything that came after.
Reborn into an ordinary human life with memories that should have been impossible to retain, Hào also possesses something far more dangerous: a power he has never once used.
He has no intention of revealing it.
Unfortunately, Gensokyo has never been particularly respectful of anyone’s plans.
One evening, an aimless walk leads Hào to an unfamiliar shrine. There, he encounters something that should not exist—a gap in the air, an impossible boundary, and a mysterious hand reaching through from the other side.
Naturally, Hào reaches back.
The next thing he knows, he is falling into Gensokyo.
A hidden world isolated from modern civilization, where humans live alongside youkai, magicians, fairies, vampires, ghosts, gods, and countless other beings that Japan has long since forgotten. It is beautiful, bizarre, dangerous, and far more interconnected than Hào realizes. In Gensokyo, rumors travel quickly, incidents are everyone’s problem, and an ordinary outsider is rarely allowed to remain ordinary for long.
Hào, however, intends to try.
He keeps his past vague. He avoids unnecessary fights, unnecessary attention, and—most importantly—anything that might make the people around him realize that there is far more to him than a strangely skilled university student who somehow ended up on the wrong side of reality.
But staying unnoticed in Gensokyo is easier said than done.
A chance encounter becomes a friendship. A simple favor becomes an incident. A quiet meal becomes an argument between youkai. A walk through the village becomes an encounter with someone Hào definitely should not have met. Before long, he finds himself surrounded by shrine maidens, magicians, youkai, immortals, lunatics, troublemakers, and people who have decided that the mysterious outsider is far too interesting to leave alone.
And Hào?
He mostly just wants to figure out where he is, find somewhere to sleep, and enjoy his new life.
What none of them know is that the seemingly harmless outsider is carrying a sword that does not need to be drawn to exist.
As Hào gradually becomes entangled in the lives of Gensokyo’s inhabitants, maintaining the illusion of normalcy becomes increasingly difficult.
Because Gensokyo has a way of dragging hidden things into the light.
A story of an outsider, a strange world, unlikely friendships, ridiculous incidents, quiet moments, and the slow unraveling of a mystery surrounding a man who should have been ordinary.
Gensokyo is full of people who are anything but normal.
Hào Shūxiāo intends to be the exception.
