I felt the same after reading the line about mc liking Ash as I felt Ash is a very mediocre trainer who is also very lazy in a way. I love pokemon fanfics so best of luck to the author but I dislike Ash too much to read this.

I swear if Ash's pikachu didn't have 101 IVs in every stat and the blood of phoenixes in his body he wouldn't even have gotten through half the films. I don't know much about the series or manga, but I doubt there was much of a difference honestly.

Ash was shown practicing with Pokemon quite a lot actually. And you realize he always ranks really highly and almost every tournament he goes in. I think people just expect him to act like a game character rather than a real athlete. I mean, how many 10-year-olds are able to travel the world on their own and bring really high in tournaments throughout the world. And they live independently at a young age.

The problem is that they expect us to be overpowered... they wanted someone more like the game characters who could curb stomp everyone rather than more realistic stuff... it's like how a character you play in a sports game can be overpowered but in real life they're just real people.
