The Two-headed Hound

While Max lounged in front of the TV. The news was broadcasting reports about mutants, including a senator named Montez who had made it clear that he would target mutants if elected.

"You know, what you did yesterday will only make people target mutants even more," Viper's voice broke into Max's thoughts. He felt Viper's hand on his shoulder as he was pushed down onto the couch. Viper's scent, a mix of orchids and danger, filled the air.

"So, I should just let them kill me?" Max's lips curled in disdain. He wasn't about to let others dictate his actions, especially when they were so clearly in the wrong.

Viper smiled, wrapping his arms around Max's neck. "As a man, do you prefer to be hard or fast?"

Max raised an eyebrow, amused by Viper's suggestive tone. "Is that even a question? Who would choose to be quick?"

Viper chuckled, a mischievous glint in his eyes. "I've made some progress with my research. The genes are complex, and the slightest mistake could cause them to collapse. But I've managed to stabilize them, at least for now."

"But..."

"The current experiment is limited to the integration of three genes, and you'll have to choose between Juggernaut or Chloe, even if the experiment is successful."

Max nodded, understanding the stakes. "I know this research is important, but it's frustrating to have to choose when I have all the genes."

"There is a way to integrate all the genes without having to choose," Viper said with a smirk.

"Really? How?" Max's interest was piqued.

Viper chuckled and rose from their seat suddenly. "These recent experiments have been really challenging, especially when I find it hard to sleep at night. I'm feeling a bit drowsy now. I think I'll head upstairs to catch up on some sleep."

"You can sleep during the day. I promise no one will disturb you tonight, so you can rest well," Max said, a tinge of annoyance in his tone.

Viper took the remark in jest, simply accepting it. "Got it. Your Ability."

"You mean the door?" Max inquired.

"Your self-healing factor integrates well with your genes, so incorporating one gene shouldn't pose a problem. But adding more won't work. However, if you could unlock the genes like you do with the soul door, even if perfect integration isn't immediate, or to expedite the process, you could initially incorporate the gene to ensure safety. Then, gradually integrate it into your genes using a gentler approach. I believe if this concept holds true, it could further enhance your genetic capabilities. You could even extract genes from others without needing my assistance."

"Even if you're not adept at it, this method could be used to suppress another person's genes, nullifying their Ability!" Viper added.

"It's certainly a promising direction, but..." Max sighed, looking at Viper with a hint of helplessness. "Even if I put aside other research and focus solely on studying the gene door you mentioned, it would still take a considerable amount of time to achieve success."

"I'm just tossing out ideas and suggestions. Whether or not you act on them is up to you," Viper replied nonchalantly.

"I'm still debating whether to extract Juggernaut's genes or Chloe's first. Your suggestion is intriguing, but I need to approach it with caution," Max mused.

Despite the allure of the suggestion, Max remained grounded. Success was uncertain, and even if possible, it wouldn't be a quick endeavor. It was better to proceed methodically, one step at a time.

Viper was about to go see Max after a nap when she suddenly heard a creaking sound behind her—the unmistakable noise of a portal opening. As she turned around, Viper saw a Blink figure emerging from the portal.

The portal vanished.

"What happened?" Concerned, everyone gathered around, asking about the situation.

Blink shook her head, "I was almost caught, how about him?"

Just as the questions flew, Max descended the stairs.

"The Hound Project hasn't let up, and it's even more perilous now," Blink urgently told Max. "I was spotted shortly after leaving. Among them are hounds with the ability to sense Mutants' positions, stronger and more precise than John's Ability. They also deployed two Mutants."

"Two-headed Hound?"

"Two Mutants working together. Their hands were connected by a machine, and they're formidable. I managed to hide in a building, but they actually demolished it. I had to teleport several times to escape," Blink recounted, still visibly shaken from the encounter.

The mention of the two-headed Hound made it clear that the situation had escalated, and Max knew they had to be even more vigilant.
