while that may be a valid option for someone who doesn't mind seeing characters dying like cedric and black Which isn't really Liam's personality, But keep in mind that Liam doesn't actually know if Harry wins in the end or not, he hasn't read the full story, but he does know of the prophecy and that Harry must be the one to defeat Voldemort, which leaves him with the conclusion that the best way to insure the Voldemort's defeat is to take away from his army while making sure Harry is on the track to defeat him, whether that was the right call, you will have to read to find out

I won't comment on what makes a story good because i am not an authority on the subject, And it is subjective to the what the readers think in the end but i will try to explain my point of view through Liam's perspective, He doesn't know how the story ends so he wasn't all too sure about if he should interfere or not, but he made his decision when he came to Hogwarts, he doesn't want to mess something up right away though and ruin everything, he plans to change the story dramatically and insure that the right side wins but he doesn't want to start acting too early, he wants to grow his power and magical knowledge and then try to tackle everything at once, So no one is alerted until it's too late ("breaking bad" killing all the prisoners in two minutes style), so until that point when he 'THINKS' he is ready he is trying to keep himself in the background to avoid any attention or complication, whether that actually happens is yet to be seen, things have started to unravel already when he tried to change the slightest thing, and don't write off romance and close friends just yet he is only at the start of his journey, as for ambition he has plenty of that, I Can't say anymore then that without spoiling, so i'll just say i hope you stick with it and see where the story goes, Thanks for commenting
Let me remind you at this point in time he didn't have a reason to think he was being followed, and it was a very hectic time for him after the feast to notice someone trailing him, and also try to remember even though he has all these grandiose goals he is still a kid and its a first time for him trying most of the things he does, He is smart and resourceful but not a savant, his main way of learning something is by learning from his mistakes
there are a lot of people who talk to themselves, And Liam as a somewhat solitary guy who spends a lot of time in his head, it isn't that far fetched to speck to himself in a point of stress to try and keep a grip on his emotions and calm himself, that was how i thought of it anyways
