Lia Giles became a border guard and mechanic for the power lines on the in between of the main city and the unearthly forests, no longer being able to stand living in the high technology world where humans are treated like second class citizens. On one of her patrols she discovers something or more like someone that no one has ever seen before.

What we consider to be the oldest novel in world literature really depends on the strictness of our definition of a novel. The looser the definition, the farther back we can go.

For example, the Japanese work the Tale of Genji(11th century A.D) by Murasaki Shikibu is often cited as the oldest novel in the world. But if you were to read the Tale of Genji, you might find it very different in nature to modern novels you are used to reading.

The modern novel is a specific type of prose fiction that only really became popular and recognized as a distinct form in the 18th century. We have now come to expect that a novel will include certain elements, including a plot, a protagonist or narrator, some central characters, possibly some central themes, and a conflict that may or may not be resolved. Many novels contain a climax near the end.

The Tale of Genji is wonderful literature, especially in Arthur Waley's idiomatic translation, but the plot is meandering, it does not have an ending, and the narrative is frequently interrupted by hundreds of poems. In order to include the Tale of Genji as a candidate for world's oldest novel, we are taking a relatively broad view of what we consider to be a novel. Under a stricter definition, Don Quixote (1605–1615) by Miguel de Cervantes might be considered the world's first novel.

A book that many consider to be the world's first "modern novel" is Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe, which was first published in 1719. Robinson Crusoe marks the beginning of realistic fiction in world literature, and is certainly another contender for the world's first novel depending on the strictness of our definition.

If you do, this special spotlight will shine even brighter as I compare and contrast at face value two phenomenal webtoons: Lookism and Odd girls out by Tae-joon Park and Morangg! Though before we begin let be known for simplicity's sake, I will be referring to both webtoons by their initials (i.e., L and OGO).



Summary


L version


Lookism follows the story of Daniel Park, a short, fat, unattractive loser who regularly got picked on at his school by the venomous bully Logan Lee. With Daniel's constant humiliation getting worse and worse by the day, his mother decided to use what little money that she had left to send him to a new school to live by himself. Along the way to Jae Wong HIigh, however, he suddenly discovers for himself a new body! But this wasn't any old somebody, nobody, give a dog a bone. It was a perfect one, fast, strong and most of all: hot! Now armed with the ability to freely change between the two bodies, Daniel is ready and willing to start his new life in Seoul! All the while doing everything he can to make it up to his mother, who sacrificed so much. Along with new friends, enemies, and plenty of adventure, Daniel will not only need to learn how to balance the bodies but also realize the true definition of Lookism.


OGO version


Odd girl out follows the story of young high school girl Nari Oh formerly a short, fat, unattractive loser who regularly got picked on by certain bullies around her. With Nari's constant humiliation getting worse and worse by the day, she decided that she would go on a diet, and unlike 99% of us, she committed to it evolving into a beautiful girl as she went to her new school. Along the way, however, she discovered that she had inadvertently become friends with the three most popular girls in school, becoming: the Odd Girl Out!

Fun fact: some of the characters in the series are based on lots of South Korean idol.


Lookism overall has one the best cast in Webtoon with only Noblesse to me being able to compare (Note: I think Noblesse has the second-best cast in Webtoon). But overall, I will give my thoughts.


Daniel Park: Daniel is overall a naive, courageous, and overall compassionate boy Daniel is a very intriguing character. One of the best overall characteristics of Daniel in my mind is even with such immense power and prior experience; he still uses his body for relatively good purposes. His main arc throughout the series is one of growing up with Daniel's confidence and drive for self-improvement growing as the story goes on.


Zack Lee: Starting as a simple punk who only loved his childhood friend, Mira zack wasn't the most liked person in school. However, after meeting Daniel, Zack soon becomes the most improved character on the show. While on the surface, he is a temperamental, dedicated, arrogant thug he soon becomes far more diplomatic and honorable in his resolve.


Euantee Lee/Vasco: My favorite character in the show personally Vasco is the leader/ founder of the Jae Wong High's Architecture department A.K.A the Burn knuckles. Vasco is essentially a little kid in a teenagers body. While he is not the sharpest tool in the shed, he does have an incredible sense of right and wrong with the strength and stubborn nature to back it up. Vasco may be humorously dumb, his strength and devotion of his fellow friends have inspired many to join the burn knuckles and spread the message of defending the weak.


OGO version


Nari Oh: despite being a blunt, warm-hearted girl, Nari has an inferiority complex about her beauty and so feels awkward around the other girls. Nari has a very relatable and down to earth glue that holds the group together.


Mirae Seo: A cheerful girl who loves a good joke Mirae often hides sadness with a smile.


Seonji Lim: A dumb girl with a heart of gold Seonji is humble and kind with unparalleled loyalty to others.


Yuna Kim: An absolute ice queen to the core Yuna is a prideful person who finds it hard to open up with anyone but Nari. While her pride often gets her into more trouble than anything else, she is starting to move past it.


Overview/Good stuff


L version


Lookism is very much like a fireworks show, fast, loud, and very intense and it's art reflects that very much. Since it's as much a comedy as it is an action story, much of the series will have blurred or more primal expressions to exemplify intense emotion or a comedic moment. Also, as I said before, the series has an incredible cast that all works off each other greatly. Despite its inclination of lol random humor, Lookism can also be very brutal and over the top in its action and violence. It is also surprisingly knowledgeable about the topics that I'll explain later.


OGO version


Odd girls out is a very simple and kind of soft webtoon. Its art is pretty basic all things considered, which perfectly fits it's very laid back nature and comedic nature. Many of its chapters are much more relatable next to Lookism's outrageous tone. It also has an overall smaller cast to focus as a way to build its main characters with a lot of its drama coming from how our characters are not the perfect little angels as they're made out to be.


Why?


The reason why I did this whole compare and contrast thing in the first place was that I have never seen two stories so vastly different yet similar. Both webtoons have a pretty basic message on not judging a book by its cover or not taking things at face value. However, the execution and expansion of the concepts are what keeps it interesting. Lookism, as I said before, is vastly over the top, but the whole "looks aren't everything" lesson is taken often pretty straight and to the point. However, it also deals with a lot of darker themes in the story. We not only see themes such as fame over morality and appearance over talent; it also gives us the lives of prisoners, runaways, and the homeless. And as long this story sticks with its message of self-improvement sticks, I can't help but see it get better with age as it tackles the unfairness of the world head on.


Odd girl out is, however, far more relatable and calmer with its messages, but it doesn't mean that the messages themselves aren't any less critical. Odd girls out show that not only everyone is as perfect as it seems and how to handle your relationships best. It also talks about the themes of cyberbullying, PTSD, and jealousy. The webtoon is very fun to read every time, and I only hope for more in the future.


Epilogue

Well, I hope you guys enjoyed this different spotlight, and next time you guys look in the mirror, I hope you like what you see. Now, if you'll excuse me, I think I need to reflect a little bit to see where the spotlights take next.

Just a simple person is trying to shine a little light on the beautiful world of webtoon. With a splash of sarcasm, narration, and spitfire along the way.  And who knows I might have other segments just for the hell of it.

[Kunlun] was by the author Feng Ge. His writing style was based on realism, practicality, emotion, and historical accuracy. He had a good understanding of history, classical literature and ancient folk customs, which were all well integrated into his work.
This made the novels he wrote have a sense of historical weight and the vicissitudes of life. Feng Ge's pen was powerful and the language was simple but potent. His writing took into account the overall situation and the description of details. Grand but delicately woven, smooth but thrilling.
The main themes of his novels were the vicissitudes of life and taking into account chivalry and kindness.
It could be said that Feng Ge absorbed the advantages of many martial arts masters such as Jin Yong, Wen Ruian, Liang Yusheng, etc. Whilst at the same time, adding his own twist.
The story of [Kunlun] took place at the end of the Song Dynasty with the transition into the early Yuan Dynasty, the novel told the story of Liang Xiao a genius strategist and pugilist who's forced to put his prodigal ways behind him when he's drawn into the chaos of the changing times. The whole book was about a million words, the plot had its ups and downs and contained many elements, such as chivalry, love, hatred, family and country.
The whole work was full of spirit and intricate subjects such as astronomy, geography, mathematics, platoon arrangement and so on.
Before Jiang Cheng in his previous life went abroad, [Kunlun] was being serialized and was being published in the magazine: [Legends of Martial Arts]. At that time, Jiang Cheng was busy with his studies and had a lot of things to handle, but he still bought copies of [Legends of Martial Arts] every two weeks, just to catch up and follow [Kunlun] until its serialization was completed.
At that time, Jiang Cheng was really fascinated by [Kunlun]. In his view, although there were traces of Jin Yong and Gu Long in the book, although there were some negligible flaws, it was the best martial arts novel in recent years. The novel decisively abandoned the basic Shaolin, Wudang, Tang and Beggar sect settings that were overused in martial arts/ wuxia novels. The sect system and martial arts in  [Kunlun] were completely anew.
The novel placed importance on the personal growth of characters and the value of life. Liang Xiao always appreciated the value and consequences of each life he took or saved, no matter the circumstances unlike a lot of other wuxia MC's.
Liang Xiao was closer to the image of a knight in the minds of young people nowadays. His obvious personality defects didn't drain his color, but made him feel more realistic and plausible.
Of course, [Kunlun] wasn't perfect, it had its criticisms. A widely criticized part of the book was when Liang Xiao attacked Xiangyang City, going against his sister's will.
He had led the Mongrol/Yuan Army to conquer Xiangyang after his sister was beaten to death by Song rebels. 
Liang Xiao had lost his parents in childhood, and experienced multiple hardships. And despite his intelligence, he was prone to letting his emotions take over and disrupt his rationale. 
So in order to gain his revenge, he actually stood on the side of the Mongols and helped them attack Xiangyang. Despite his dislike for killing and his brain telling him not to, he went to war on emotion and only when he saw Xiangyang razed to the ground and become the very definition of hell on earth, did he realise how big a mistake he had made. He had become like the very people he spat in disgust at, he had brought endless killing and suffering to the world. 
Reading that section back in the day, Jiang Cheng had felt torn seeing how Liang Xiao reacted and took it.
 Did Liang Xiao really do something wrong? In the eyes of the Song citizens,of course, it was a heinous crime. As rebels and soldiers of the Song Dynasty naturally they would. But they were among the same people calling for the death of the Yuan Dynasty and death of its supporters.
Maybe it was because he was young and feeling rebellious but Jiang Cheng at that time was annoyed at Liang Xiao's reaction. Why was he acting so down and out, he had got his revenge hadn't he, they had deserved it, had been his thoughts. 
However, with the increase in age and experience, he had a new understanding and view of [Kunlun]. In fact, just like in the last line of the novel, as the fortune teller said, fame and fortune, grievance and hatred, were all illusory dreams of the world, in the end, they were worthless. 
In any case, in his opinion, [Kunlun] was better than [Zhu Xian], so Jiang Cheng decided that he would write [Kunlun]!

Jiang Cheng a screenwriter is reincarnated to 2001, into the seventeen-year-old body of another Jiang Cheng. 

Clutching onto the dreams of his previous life he attempts to succeed where he previously failed. 

He starts from scratch, as a small-time screenwriter writing television shows and movie scripts. 

Filled with dreams of becoming a generational  entertainment legend and establishing an entertainment empire he takes the road to become the King of Film.

Contrary to the other instances, Jin was extremely confident that there would be no need for any fixes with this last instance and it would be to the liking of the twin shopkeepers Bai Xin and Bai Wan. This was because he literally had handed them his Weapons and Armoury Instances.
But for the two of them, this became a major headache. Bai Xin and Bai Wan would have prefered to become store owners in title, acting as mere of assistants for Jin. The dungeon supplier, however, had other plans in mind and was more than happy to delegate this task to fully concentrate on his dungeons. Not to be too cruel, Jin did assign some Red Panda NPCs to them if they had any questions and as workers free of charge (for the rest of December at least). The minor difference between then and now was that Jin had revamped the place a little.
The weapon store now featured a dedicated shooting range, a place where dummy mannequins sacrificed themselves to allow for weapon tests and most importantly private workshop spaces for people like Ren Wei who loved to customise their weapons.
The workshop wasn't bound to just guns. With Bai Wan taking over as the manager of the store, the Three Headed Bear no longer needed to be the one to sell weapons. Jin asked him to use this freed up time to instruct budding aspirants who wanted to become blacksmiths or at least learn how to keep their weapons sharp.
That way, Jin could get people to take blacksmithing as a professional hobby... and who knows, they might produce decent weapons in the future under the guidance of the Three Headed Bear. Of course, Jin did not expect too many customers to trifle with the Master Blacksmith since his attitude could be at times overbearing. (or most of the time.) But unlike the research into chi potions, this was not a priority. Jin wasn't in any dire need for some potential breakthroughs in blacksmithing as he already had a damn good weapon on hand.
Usually, the Master Blacksmith would ask the System to collect all the weapons that were not in use and place it in an instance for him, which also worked as a furnace. After which, the Three Headed Bear would pick a weapon up and hammer it in the forge. The thing was, as he picked the particular weapon up, hundreds if not thousands of weapons were invisibly lifted up by an unknown force.
When the Three Headed Bear started banging his hammer on the said weapon, one could see that the weapons that were lifted with an invisible force started to twirl around as if they were the one being reforged in the anvil too. Every turn, every hit gave the weapons a sip of brand new life.
He had dubbed this as the 'Rain of Hammering Fire'.
Highly effective, this particular Legendary Grade blacksmith technique was only limited by the state a weapon was in. Regardless of dents, chips or blunts, the Rain of Hammering Fire fixed all of these problems, yet what was already broken could not be fixed were eventually reforged in bulk.
The Master Blacksmith claimed that each weapon had an innate soul to it, but whether that soul turned sentient was another issue. According to him the latter was more commonly known as living weapons and the System cited that this particular Earth had seen its fair share of such weapons before. Unsurprisingly they were all made by Master Blacksmiths too.
"The soul of a weapon responds to the Rain of Hammering Fire, for they wish to be cleansed of their own sins. Of not taking responsibility. Of betraying of their master, or just…the lack of maintenance." The Three Headed Bear said without looking up as he continued to hammer on the weapon before him.
"But sadly, some do not wish to obey, and most do not oblige to any being who happens to find them. They merely wanted to be free and to be more than just a weapon." The overly large bear shared with a tone of sadness as he placed the heated metal into the water for cooling.
It was the first time the Master Blacksmith had talked to Jin using more than just a few words and grunts. Although the conversation was awkward and came out of nowhere, the dungeon supplier kept quiet, hoping to learn more.

Yet even after a couple of minutes, the sound of the hammer hitting the anvil was all that filled the room. Regardless, that encounter was definitely an improvement as Jin reminisced about it while continuing his inspection of the private workshops and the training hall which he had placed. Because of the nature of dimensional instances and System's infinite capacity in making them, the workshops instances became something akin to a box.
While Jin did contemplate whether to make the workshop instances as sub instances but realised that, the blacksmith tools and equipment that could be bought and filled their personal workshop up. Hence it was best to put them as instances which could be called out whenever they needed to be used.
Thus the System would pull out the data of the said personal workshop instance and the items within that particular dimension, and someone could immediately use it. It did not take up any physical space and was easy to switch these workshops around for the people who rented them.
Meanwhile, the training hall was similar to a giant forge with tens of multiple anvils and blacksmith equipment, ovens and tools etc. For a fee (be it a single session or multiple sessions), the customers could learn how to fix their weapons and create a weapon of their own.
If the weapon were deemed passable in the Master Blacksmith's eyes, Jin would allow it to be sold, and the customer could earn the profit after a deduction of 5% for operating fees. That was how the training workshop could be conducted, but the Three Headed Bear had demanded that he would teach at most 10 customers at once, with each session being at least three hours long. (Afterall, he insisted on quality, not quantity when it comes to teaching.)
In addition, he would determine if the customers were worthy enough to learn how to smith. When Jin asked if he could relax the conditions for the moment, the Master Blacksmith shook his head slowly and told Jin not to fuck around. The dungeon supplier was stunned for a moment before laughing bitterly at his opportunistic greed for money.
Jin eventually agreed and started making posters and brochures that would be given out with every purchase of a weapon. "Do you even smith?!" became the tagline on the brochures and Bai Wan liked it very much, considering trying out himself if time allowed it.
Meanwhile, Jin was wondering about the true identity of the Three Headed Bear ever since he had created the brochure. He needed a name to spread the word and not just a mere title of Ultimate Instructor Blacksmith, which people deemed the words to 'be void of any weight'.
The System did not help him in this regard since it had promised the Master Blacksmith that it would not reveal its true name under any circumstances. Unless the bear introduced himself to Jin, there was no other way to find out.
Nonetheless, without a name to go by, Jin felt it would be hard for the customers to address him, so he personally asked if the Three Headed Bear was okay with a nickname instead. "Vulcan." The Master Blacksmith answered after some slight deliberation.
"I see… Roman God of Fire otherwise known as the Smith God. Very fitting." Did the story of Vulcan have some link with the mysteriousness of not revealing his name or was he perhaps indeed a smith that had, in fact, worked for the Gods? Only time could tell.
Either way, Jin was reasonably satisfied with these new changes. He watched Bai Wan do some stocktaking and learn to navigate the weapon store instance under the Red Panda's supervision as he went over to the Armour Instance.
Just as he had done with the weapon store instance, Jin had also slightly modified the armoury department store theme.
A fashion runway was added to the middle of the department store where there would be a constant (small and varied) promotion on the clothes that were showcased. For this, Jin had decided to use the cosplaying minotaurs, but with a slight twist.
Those minotaurs had to wear the cosmetic inscriptions to turn into pure humans or alternatively pose as cosplayers with horns. It wasn't too hard given they were already humanoid in shape and figure (though a bit hairy in their normal forms). Still, he insisted that at least a couple of them should use human appearance to showcase that 'normal' humans would also look good in the outfits.
As for the 'storekeeper', Bai Xin was responsible for creating bi-weekly themes based on the clothes available for sale. Jin didn't mind if she wanted to rope her younger brother in for a few of the weapons that Jin was selling and encouraged the twins to experiment with the double promotion within the store.
He believed it would create some hype and sales, especially when the storekeepers were to mix and match and sell the weapons and armours as a set.
The cosplaying minotaurs no doubt gave some of their input to Bai Xin when they first met her, hoping to try out certain themes for the future. At the same time, the Bai Twins had never seen so many handsome dudes and beautiful ladies of various colours converging to the dungeon supplier's store.
The models collectively lied telling them that Jin had hired them at separate occasions for their advice for his own series of inscribed defensive gear. The young woman could not be happier, allowing them to help her and accepting their opinions.
Meanwhile, the cosplaying minotaurs had asked Jin if he could allow them to create their very own cosplay sets. It was a wish of theirs ever since they discovered this miraculous relic called the television and cinemas.
At the very least, they wished to create their very own cosmetic inscription costume. If Jin wanted, they were more than happy to allow him to sell it as defensive gears. (Jin quickly came to regret showing them his world's definition of cosplaying when he had asked the minotaurs where they had learned how to dress up.)
For now, the Boss told them to attract a large crowd first before he would entertain such thoughts. That alone had made them extremely elated and already provided Bai Xin with a lot of ideas which had accumulated ever since the day they were exposed to Japanese and Chinese animation.
Bai Xin had never seen such enthusiasm and promised her new colleagues that she would do what she could. She revealed herself to the minotaurs as a budding seamstress and her cultivation style of the Weaving Spider that aided her in creating clothes.
At times like this, Jin wished that Zhi Nu hadn't have taken up the management job at the Adventurer Guild and instead worked with Bai Xin and Vulcan to create even more defensive gears with more modern designs. However, Zhi Nu surprisingly revealed to him that her weaving job was not something she enjoyed particularly, especially when it had been forced upon her ever since she learnt about the needle and thread.
Still, the Weaver Girl was not going to leave Jin in a lurch.
If he ever needed her to help to make a suit of his own, she would drop everything to assist him. She only wished to try and repay the gratitude she held for him in helping Niu Lang to gain a new skill and profession.


In a modern world where cultivators need a place to cultivate or vent their boredom, there are private businesses that set up instance dungeons with the aid of technology and cultivation magic to enable cultivators to train and commoners to experience the life of cultivation. They are called dungeon suppliers.

i will admit that during that time, I am still a young budding author and could have expressed the story better in the early hundred chapters. But I assure you the story development is worth it.

Chapter 181. Kidnapping, Part XVII

"Good for you, Phoebe. Don't worry about your luggage because I'll send it to you tomorrow. Drop by often." Sophie comforted crying Phoebe and Amelie also patted her back silently.
 
"I'll go now. I can't come to the dressing shop for the time being. If something happens, send someone to the mansion. Oh, rather, two of you come to the Kiellini mansion. I'll send a carriage tomorrow, so you can bring Phoebe's luggage."
 
There was a lot of implicit in Julietta's confident words. The free entry of the Kiellini mansion which was forbidden for the family of the dressing shop said that Julietta was not in the same position as before.
 
Maribel murmured as she sent off Julietta who was going down with her eyes curled and said that she would see her tomorrow. "If I want to enter the Kiellini mansion freely, I'll have to quit my job as the troupe leader as soon as possible."
 
"Are you going to quit the theater?" Amelie and Sophie asked Maribel in a whisper.

Maribel smiled coquettishly. "Julietta told me to quit my post if I wanted to go in and out of the Imperial Castle. I think I'll find out somewhere to live. If it's here, the theater is close by."
 
"I hoped that Julietta would finish that shaky role as a substitute and come into the dress shop, but it won't happen," Sophie sighed slightly as she worried.
 
"Be careful of the title from now on, now that she's become a real Princess of Kiellini."
 
It was so beautiful to see the carefully planted seed-bearing fruit. Maribel walked back to the theater, thinking about how she would continue to take care of Julietta until the flower was in full bloom.

"Why isn't there anyone? What the hell happened here?"
 
Christine stayed in the Imperial Castle until the end of the party so as not to be associated with what would happen to Princess Kiellini. Then, when the appointed time came, she hurried out of the lounge before contacting Prince Francis. She wanted to see the thoroughly abused Princess Kiellini.
 
Soon after leaving the Imperial Castle, she entered Eldira Street and saw a black carriage standing by the road. Christine wore a black cape to hide her conspicuous white dress at night, then got off the wagon and quickly transferred to the carriage.
 
"Where is Eva?" Christine asked Themes, who was riding in the carriage.
 
"She's waiting around."
 
"Let's go."
 
Christine imagined the face of the Kiellini girl, which would make her forget about the terrible thing with Francis. 'You and I had a really hard time today. I've been raped by the noblest royal family in the Empire, but you've been soiled by the dirtiest death-row criminal in the Empire. That's the difference between you and me. Now you won't dare look over at Killian with that filthy body.'
 
He was a criminal sentenced to death for murder, robbery, and rape and who had been forced to commit a crime against Princess Kiellini. She took the man who was about to die out of prison, and made a promise to save him if he succeeded at what he was told to do today.
 
'Since I ordered him to do what he was most confident about, then how badly as he treated you?'
 
Christine laughed almost hysterically, looking out at the dark street that passed by quickly. The face of Themes at her spiteful smile was astounded, but Christine was laughing and never noticed. Finally, the carriage stopped in front of a small mansion at the edge of Harrods Street.
 
"Where is Eva?"
 
Christine looked at Themes, as she could not see Eva's carriage in front of the house.
 
"I'm sure she's nearby. It's time, so she'll be back soon. Please go in."
 
At the mention of Themes, Christine got off the wagon, but passed through a small courtyard into the building. She looked around in anticipation of the scene she was about to see. "Where is she?"
 
As soon as she looked around the single-story building and spoke, Themes began to go around to check.
 
"Is nobody here?"
 
There was a human voice, so there must be a certain reaction, but it was quiet inside. Christine's brow furrowed. "You didn't kill her, did you?"
 
She thought it would be all right for the Kiellini princess to die and disappear, but she preferred the girl to be afflicted by Francis for the rest of her life as well. Christine pressed her headscarf deeper so that Princess Kiellini wouldn't recognize her.
 
Christine expected a miserable sight to be found soon and instead, Themes told her in a trembling voice, "Miss, there's no one." 
 
"What are you talking about?" At the incredible words, Christine raised her voice.
 
"There's no one here. No, there's no sign of anyone who was here." When it became clear that things were wrong, Themes's voice grew fainter and fainter.
 
"Get Eva right away. What the hell happened here?"

Themes incited Eva to organize this. Eva disliked Christine's fickle, and petulant personality, yet Themes furtively dumped this work on her, asking her to take on the rest of the job, as she would be responsible for currying favor with Christine.
 
Eva, unaware of Themes's secret designs to wash her hands of harming the Kiellini successor, took care of the job without thinking further.

Eva had waited alone at the mansion today for the subject of kidnapping, but as soon as she confirmed Princess Kiellini had arrived, she gave the money she had promised to the death-row criminal and quickly left. Originally, she was supposed to wait in front of the mansion until the work was finished, but she was afraid she would be seen by others.
 
Eva then left Harrods Street and returned to the mansion in time for her appointment. Not expecting anything to go wrong at all, she saw the carriage of Baron Rabiel had already arrived, hurried into the mansion, and found Christine. "Miss, you arrived early."
 
Christine glared at Eva who opened her mouth to emphasize that she was not early. "Where the hell have you been and come from? Why isn't there anyone in the mansion?"
 
Eva looked at Themes in surprise at Christine's words.
 
 Eva's eyes grew bigger as Themes approached and whispered quickly, "What happened here? This is the right place. Why isn't anyone here?"
 
"That's not possible! I came out after the death-row criminal attacked the princess. I gave him half the money I promised, and I'd give him the rest of it when he finished. He wouldn't have left without receiving the money…"
 
Slap! Christine's hand hit Eva's cheek without mercy. "Why weren't you watching here? Did I order you to do things so poorly? Didn't you think he'd run away if he was given a greater reward by Princess Kiellini?"
 
Eva's mouth closed as she tried to protest against something unexpected.
 
Christine wondered how she would tell Francis about it. If she didn't give the princess away, her future would be mortgaged to Francis. "No! Find him now. Get the princess!" she screamed frantically.
 
Themes hurried to say, "Calm down, Lady Anais. I'll go to the Kiellini mansion now. If the princess hasn't returned yet, the mansion will be in disarray. Then I'll search through the neighborhood and bring her back, because he'll still be with the princess."
 
At Themes's words, Christine calmed down. "You have to bring her at all costs, or my life is over, because I won't be able to get away from Francis."
 
To avoid the frantic Christine, Themes quickly pulled Eva away from the mansion. "How come you've done this?"
 
"I came out after I saw him knock Princess Kiellini to the floor. I told him people were coming soon, so I thought he wouldn't run away. I didn't think this was going to happen…"
 
Themes sighed deeply. "I'll go to the Kiellini mansion first. You have to figure out what to say to the lady."
 
After soothing Eva, Themes started to the Kiellini mansion in a carriage.

Ian arrived at the Harrods' mansion as usual, and headed back to the dressing shop in a black carriage without an emblem, driven by two guards disguised as his assistants.

The imperial driver and two other guards remained at the mansion to disguise Killian's activities. They had been waiting at the Harrod street mansion, and as planned, they drove around Eloz Street with an empty carriage bearing the emblem of Killian, went back to the Imperial Castle, and then they were supposed to go to Harrods Street.
 
Ian drove through the dark streets in the unmarked carriage and waited for the Prince to come out of the dressing shop after finishing.

Julietta, born as an illegitimate child of a nobility, is raised in an opera theatre to hide away from the eyes of the noble's main wife.
To pay back her debt, she turns into a servant and challenges the high paying job that nobody could withstand.

"MISS WEATHERS, LESS WRITING—"

A hand slammed down onto my desk, scaring the crap out of me that I let out a tiny yelp. Oh crab cakes, I thought as I looked up to see the mild look of disapproval on my English teacher's face, Mrs Kent. She pushed her thin-framed glasses up her nose, her other hand grabbing my own, lifting it up and swiftly snatched my notebook off of my desk,  into her own hands.

"More paying attention, please." She said before she turned and walked over to her own desk, opening up a drawer and placing my beloved notebook inside. "I am keeping this until the end of the lesson, that's when you can come and collect it."

End of the lesson? God damn it, that lady.

A scowl made its way onto my face, and I sank down in my seat.

"If you'd rather spend your time in detention after school, Nova, then I'd suggest you wipe that scowl off your face and sit up in your seat. I am not your mother, I shouldn't have to be telling you these things." Mrs Kent spoke again, and a few snickers and 'oohs' filled the classroom.

I nodded, looking down and avoiding the stares of my fellow classmates. I could feel myself getting hot as I nervously began to pick at the ends of my yellow sweater. "Y-yes Mrs Kent."

This was the second time I had gotten caught writing inside my notebook. It was a separate book from my normal notebooks I use for my classes, and usually I was very slick at hiding it away from teachers, but never from Mrs Kent. She was very good at catching people.

"Can anyone tell me a theme from The Great Gatsby?"

I've only seen the film, I have not read the book.

I hope she would not pick me to answer this difficult question. I peeked up at her, seeing her hawk-like green eyes sweep over the students in the class. I grimaced when they landed on mine, and immediately my eyes looked down at my English notebook, written with today's date and a title at the top of the page: The Great Gatsby, with nothing else under it. I knew what themes were, but I didn't have time to write them down because another idea for my novel popped inside my head and I knew I had to write it down before I forgot about it, and I knew I would regret it later if I didn't write it down.

I certainly wouldn't be able to think of themes on the spot like this, if she asked me. I need time to think about it since it's been a few days when I last watched the film.

"Nova?" said my teacher, making me freeze. I could feel my other classmates stare at me, although I don't know why. I shyly looked up from my desk and into Mrs Kent's eyes. "Yes?"

"Name a theme from The Great Gatsby."

Crap. Okay, Nova. Theme? Did she want a theme from the book or the movie? Who cares, they're all the same, aren't they?

"D-does it have to be from the film or the book?" I felt mortified hearing myself stammer. I sounded like a broken record.

I watched my teacher shrug. "Either one, it doesn't matter."

"Um..." I began. "Love?" It came out more like a question rather than a statement. But at least I said something, I just hoped it was the right thing.

She smiled. "Good."

I mentally cheered, happy with myself that I got something right in class. But then Mrs Kent went to say the words I dreaded to hear, and that happiness of mine was short-lived. 

"What about Love? How is it shown in the film or the novel? Is there a difference in the love between Daisy and Gatsby versus Daisy and Tom?"

Oh crap. How did she expect me to answer this? I hadn't watched the film in days, and my memory is so terrible. 

I probably looked like a fish out of water to her, my mouth open as I struggled to find words. She looked at me intently, sighing. "Nova, you watched the film. Correct?"

Not wanting to disappoint her anymore than I already have, I nodded. "Yes I have, Mrs Kent."

"Then you should be able to answer this simple question. Why is Love an important theme? What does it show us?"

I could tell her patience with me was wearing thin. I nodded frantically, feeling myself grow hotter as I gazed down at my notebook, pretending to read my nonexistent notes as if I'd written something that would help me find my answer. I knew there were students who were waiting for my answer just as Mrs Kent was, and I already knew what they were thinking of me. I shoved those thoughts down, not wanting to look like a fool.

"Nova? I'm waiting." I heard Mrs Kent say, and the tapping of feet against the floor had begun. Great. I've made her impatient and disappointed. I'm never going to get my notebook back now. 

I could feel tears threatening to make their way out of my eyes, but I blinked to make them go away. My throat felt tight. Don't cry. Don't let them see you like this.

"The theme of Love is evident in both film and novel of The Great Gatsby. My memory is a bit hazy from the novel as I haven't read it in years, so bear with me. But the love Daisy feels towards Gatsby is entirely inaccurate." said a voice from behind me.

As shocked as I was, I didn't want to turn around. I knew who that voice belonged to. Harley Reid. He was the school's resident bad boy, and so were his two friends, Alastair and Bodhi. They've been friends since childhood, and rumour had it that they were apart of a gang, something which I found ridiculous. Gangs? There weren't any gangs in our town. Unless there were and I was unaware of it? He was a bad boy, but he was also very intelligent, one of the top students in our grade. He was the type of person to get top grades in everything, something I was envious of. He speaks like he spouts poetry.

"She claims to love him, when in fact it is his wealth she is in love with. As for Gatsby himself, whether he loves her or not is an open question. Does he genuinely love Daisy? Or is he in love with the idea of her? As for Tom and Daisy, they do not love each other. They married for what may seem like the wrong reasons, and both seem to be quite miserable in their marriage. Tom seeks out new women on the daily to please him, much like Daisy does in Gatsby when he returns, creating a whole mess of problems. I do think that there is a difference between the two couples. One couple got together at the wrong time, and the other got married at the right time, just for the wrong reasons."

The whole class was stunned, even Mrs Kent who looked at Harley like she was his own son, beginning to praise him and she started to clap. "Oh my, that was wonderful Mr Reid. Wonderful explanation of the definition of love in our studied film."

I could have come up with an explanation just like that! If only I wasn't so nervous. As much as I hate to admit it, I was thankful that he had answered the question, saving me from further humiliation. I shook my head. No, he did not save me. He just happened to have the words I did and said it much better. 

I couldn't imagine the look on Harley's face, perhaps he was smirking like the arrogant bastard he is. What if I turned around to look at him? I mean, everyone is doing it so I should too, right? 

I slowly turned my head around and found him at a desk near the corner of the room. The students beside him were patting him on the back, giving him fist bumps and high fives. I watched as he grinned, raising his fist to bump other fists. His gaze swept across the room, seeming to look for something. I didn't have time to look away before his eyes locked with mine. His eyes were a gorgeous colour, and something about them made me shudder. I watched as his eyes bored into mine before he winked at me.

All the colour drained from my face and I turned around in my seat, feeling my cheeks flush. I felt my hand fly up to fiddle with my locker around my neck, something I always did when I was nervous. Oh yes, I get nervous whenever anyone makes eye contact with me, not just boys. My father always reminds me it's important to make eye contact with someone when you're talking to someone so that you are perceived as rude or dismissive.

After the praise of Harley Reid was over, I was hoping Mrs Kent would forget about me and put all of her attention on Harley, but no. Instead, she looked at me and pointed her thick finger right at me. "You could learn a thing or two from Mr Reid, Nova." 

I resisted the urge to roll my eyes. Instead, I nodded. "Yes Mrs Kent."

The bell rang, dismissing students from class. I quickly packed up my things, moving toward the door when I was called back. When I did go back to stand in front of Mrs Kent's desk, from my peripheral vision I noticed that Harley and his friends hadn't left the class yet. From the looks of it, they were on their phones. I wonder why they hadn't left yet? Everyone else had.

Hopefully, she wanted to give my notebook back. "Nova.." She began. Wrinkles on the sides of her eyes were visible, and strands of grey hair popped out from her bun in her black hair. She looked worried.

"You are a smart girl. For the past two years since I've had you in my class, you have continued to amaze me with the top marks that you receive on almost every assignment given, high enough marks to possibly match Harley over there." She said, gesturing to the boy behind me.

I could sense a 'but' was coming. "But I can't help but feel as if... something isn't right with you."

I furrowed my eyebrows. "I don't understand."

"Is everything alright at home?" She questioned, searching my eyes for something, anything that might say No. There is something wrong at home and I need your help. 

"Yes, everything's fine at home. Why do you ask?" I questioned, my hands clenching by my sides. My nails dug into the skin of my palms, and it hurt. But I didn't care. I never did. 

"I'm just concerned. I mean," She pauses, moving to grab something from her drawer. I assumed it was my notebook. "The things you've written in here.." She held up my notebook in front of my face, and I was tempted to reach out, grab it and run. "are of worry and concern to me."

She read my notebook? Why would she do that? Isn't that an invasion of privacy? I was hurt. Frustrated. Angry.

As much as it hurt, I shoved my anger down, something which I knew was a bad, bad idea. Instead, I chuckled, which made me wince. It sounded foreign to my own ears. "Mrs Kent, those are just stories I write in there. Made up from my own imagination. Purely fictional. They're not based on anything."

I wasn't a good liar. But sometimes if I tried hard enough, I was able to convince people that I was fine, and more often than not, they believed me.

Under the scrutinising gaze of Mrs Kent, which lasted a few good seconds, she seemed to believe me. Her mouth said some things, but her eyes said something else.

"Alright." She said and smiled. When I looked into her eyes, I could tell she was struggling with whether to believe me or not. But I didn't care. "I guess I should give this back and let you go to lunch."

I thanked her and took my notebook from her hands, avoiding her gaze. Once I was out of the classroom, I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding.

I'm glad I got my notebook back, but the pain in my palms was killing me. Gritting my teeth, I opened my palm and saw what looked like red crescent moons in a small row in the middle of my palm. There was no doubt in my mind that it was the same on my other palm.

I sighed and begun making my way to the cafeteria with a smile on my face.

Seventeen year old Nova Weathers is your average teenager. While others went out and partied, Nova would stay at home and binge her favourite TV shows or write stories. She disliked the idea of socialising, partying and having to make 'small talk'. but if there was one thing to know about her, it was that she loved to write.

As the majority of her time is spent writing stories and creating worlds inside of her mind, she barely pays any attention in her classes, resulting in a drop in grades.
