Walking in the door after work, one question persists in my mind. Searching for Damon I'm surprised it is so hard to find someone in such a small place. They have a two-bedroom apartment, why can I not find him? Calling out his name, a faint "here" comes from behind the bathroom door. I should have known he was in there, after all, where else would he be if he is not in the living room or his bedroom? 

Taking a seat on the couch, my leg bounces up and down as I wait for him to leave the bathroom. What is taking him so long? I lean back on the armrest and fall on my back so I am staring at the ceiling. I take the time to think back to the therapy session that I had during lunch today. We finally made it to the point where I was ready to talk about the last year and how it impacted me. I can remember the range of emotions on her face as I went into detail about what happened. She looked shocked, scared, possibly proud. It is crazy to think about how someone's perception of you changes when they hear about some things that you have dealt with in your life. I don't think she really understood why I was going to her in the beginning, I mean, after all, all I had was neglectful parents who died and left me alone. Yes, that is a reason to see someone, but I think she could always tell there was something more. 

She asked me whether there was something that could help me get my memories back, such as a journal or diary. It is important that I remember the past because that could be one of the main causes I am having these nightmares and thoughts: I have nothing else to think about aside from that because I don't have my memories. 

Thinking about it, she may be right. I have my memories of Brandon, but even those are not very clear because there are still missing pieces about Damon, Carol, Dave, and Amelia. 

Hearing the click of the bathroom lock, I pull my body back into a sitting up position and wait as Damon finally leaves the bathroom. It's another two minutes before Damon emerges from the bathroom, a cloud of steam trailing out behind him. I thought men took quick showers, he was in there for over twenty minutes… 

"Hey, Rose. What's up? How was work?" 

"Hey. Work was good. I actually have a question to ask you that is kinda important. Do you know if I kept a diary or journal that could help me get my memories back? It can literally be anything."

"You didn't have a diary, but you were writing a novel for your writing course. You were always working on it. I'm not sure what it is about, but maybe it will spark something."

Feeling hope rise within me, I ask further. "Do you know where the draft is now?" 

"Your professor has it, I believe. You always carried it around and then one day you didn't have it anymore. I would try him first."

With newfound determination, I thank Damon and rush out the door. If I hurry, my professor may be there. Even without my newer memories, I know there is only one professor who assigns students a novel draft as their final project. I have had him for years now and it is very easy to navigate to his office. It has looked the same for all of my years here and it brings a sense of nostalgia. This is the office where I decided to become a writer, not just an editor, but a writer whose words could be heard and read around the world. 

Knocking on the door, my professor opens it, a look of surprise on his face.

"Rose, how are you? What brings you here?" 

Do people not know about what happened to me? On one hand that makes me relieved, I don't want anyone to really know, but on the other hand, it upsets me. Is everyone from my academic career just a small minor character in my life? Will I forget them in the future, the same way they will forget me? For some, I want them to travel throughout all the chapters in my life.

"Hi. I am good. How are you? I was hoping you had the draft of my novel we had to write for class. I can't find it in my apartment and I want to review it." 

He's looking at me funny. Why is he looking at me like that? 

"Uh, Rose? I suppose life has been crazy since you graduated and all. Uh… I don't have your manuscript. Remember we talked about getting it published? We sent it over to an editor that works in your building to see where we can take it when you finish it."

My mind draws a big blank. How could I forget that my work was in the process of getting published? I should have been working on it this whole time. I have so much to write about, I think. 

"Of course! I remember that. Thank you again for all of your help with getting that done. I am really excited about getting published." 

He still has this funny, confused look on his face. I don't think he buys what I am saying. I just can't believe that my work is going to get published when I finish it. I need to finish it soon. My whole life could change after that. I know it will change after that. I mean, once I am published, my words will be printed forever. I will have left a small mark on the world. 

"Do- Do you need a copy of it, Rose? I can give you mine after I make a copy of it. I would love to use it as an example in my future classes. This is still okay with you, correct?" 

"I'm sorry, but do you mind making a copy? I can do that if you want, I don't want to inconvenience you. And yes, I would love for you to use it as an example. It would be an honor." 

"It is no problem at all, Rose. I would be happy to print you a copy. I can head upstairs now and do it if you need it." 

"Yes, please. I misplaced my copy and want to pick up where I left off in the book. With work and everything I have not had much of a chance to write, but I don't want to lose my flow." 

My flow is definitely gone especially since I cannot remember what the book is about, but he doesn't need to know that. 

We stand at the printer for the next 30 minutes, scanning each page and making conversation about how my job is now. I tell him about how I am now meeting with some authors and we are taking the next steps to get him published. The rest of the time he talks about his new students and then asks me if I want to mentor a student of his who doesn't know what he wants to do but is a brilliant writer. I'm not sure what to say about his offer. I mean, my life is a mess right now, but maybe helping someone will then help me. 

Of course, I say yes. This man has helped me with my future more times than I can count. This is my way of giving back for all of his generosity. 

Grabbing the final stack of papers out of the printer, we head back up to his office where we decide to meet later this week to decide on a day where I can meet this student and get to know him better. I am nervous but so excited at the same time. Writing is my passion and even with everything going on, writing has always been my way to cope. 

Walking out of his office, I scan the pages to see what I have written so far. A few names catch my eyes and I wonder if I found my diary. It seems to be my diary. But now a new question persists, why would I make my diary a novel? 

My eyes continue to glance at the manuscript the whole way home and the minute I walk into the apartment, I sit in Damon's room and get to reading. A couple of chapters in and my head starts to pound as it did when I was with Brandon and my memories came back. I feel like I am learning everything about my friends again. I continue to read but have to stop shortly later when the pounding in my head doubles and I can no longer keep my eyes open. With a whimper of pain, darkness clouds my vision, a door bangs open and someone calls my name in a panic before I am pulled under.

I was picking up my bag which was on the floor when Claire asked me about my story. School was over for the day and I was just getting ready to go home when my friend Claire came over and asked me if I published my story yet.

I throw pieces of paper at the top of my bag when I'm bored, what else am I supposed to do to pass the time? I can't talk to Claire because she's in a different section than me.
"How many reads did it get?" Claire said as she sat on one of the tables and started chewing a gum. Are you even a girl? I mean the way you sit is not lady like, I get that you are one of the tough girls at school but be a bit lady like. Know what? I'm not going to focus on the way she acts, I'm just going to let her be. That's her life anyway, I won't ruin her fun.
"It got to about 5 reads." I replied as I picked up the last piece of paper.
"Only 5?"
"Yeah. By the way, how was it?"
"How was what?"
"My story, how was the new update? Did I do good?"
"Oh, I didn't know that you already updated it."
I was about to put on my bag but I stopped and I looked at Claire. "You didn't know?"
"Well how was I supposed to know if you don't inform your readers that you have already published the next part of your story? Why don't you announce your story anyway?"
"What do you mean?" I asked as I began walking outside the door and Claire followed me. Me and Claire walk home together, even though she is part of a group in school, she still likes walking home with me, she says that the atmosphere with me hits different than that of the atmosphere with her group.
"I mean what I mean dummy. Your stories are great, but they don't have any audience so really they're just going to waste."
"Your point is?"
"What I mean is, you should tell people about your story, you should endorse it. Your story needs to have great audiences."
"I don't think endorse is the right word you are looking for."
"Whatever word it is that I am looking for, I'm pretty sure that it's endorse, so shut up and endorse your stories." Claire said as she spit out the gum she was chewing and started chewing another one. How is her jaw still working?
"Well, that's the thing, I want people to see and read my stories its just, I don't know how."
"Are you even listening to me? I just literally said what you need to do, you need to endorse them!"
"Again, endorse is not the correct term!"
"Endorse them!" Claire kept on forcing that the term endorse is the term she is looking for, it's not! And if you ask me what is the correct term, I don't know it.
"I can't, okay? I'm shy."
"What?" Claire looked at me with this expression, the most annoyed expression in the world is plastered on Claire's face right now.
"I'm shy, I feel like I'm bothering someone whenever I'm promoting my stories. I feel like I'm disturbing people whenever I ask them to read and support my stories. I'm scared." It's true, I don't have the courage to tell people to support and read my story because I'm scared, when I'm about to send a link to my story to someone, I can't seem to send it. Thoughts of me annoying people and asking too much attention comes to my mind, stopping me from sending the link to my stories.
"You're scared?" Claire asked as she kept looking at me.
"Yeah, I'm scared that people will think of me like an attention seeker, I'm scared that people will say that I lack attention that I need to force people to read my stories."
"Well how will your stories be known if you don't even tell them to people?"
"I don't know. I'll just sit around and do nothing, I guess? Hoping that someone famous will read it and give my story a shoutout or something."
Claire just looked at me, again, with the most annoyed look on her face. I can tell that one more word which she doesn't like comes out from my mouth, she'll kill me.
"You do know that there is no way that that will happen to someone, right? And if it will and/or does happen, there's just a small chance that your story is the one story that that famous person is reading. Little to no chance that that will happen." Listening to what Claire said made my heart get broke. I know that that won't happen, but still, I hoped for it to happen one day.
"Well, a guy can dream right?"
"You're right, but if it happens, chances are you are already done with writing."
"Done with writing?"
"Yeah, like when you get old and you have a job. Chances are you already stopped writing and already started working."
I took a moment and gave a thought to what Claire said. Why am I writing again? What's the purpose of writing my stories if no one ever reads them?
I stopped and looked at Claire.
"What's wrong?" Claire asked as she looked back at me.
"What do I need to do to get more readers?"
Claire smiled as she gave me a pat on the back. "That's the spirit! Now, what you need to do is go to every social media platform you know, and start sharing and posting your stories! Readers will come in overnight!"
I took Claire's advice and did what she did. I was hesitant at first, I was scared that people will see me as an attention seeker. It took me 15 minutes to get the courage, but when I got the courage, I posted on every social media I know of.
A few days passed and I checked how many readers I got. I felt my heart being shattered at the sight. The number of my readers stayed the same, well, not the same, I mean I received a few more reads, from 5 reads it went to 9 reads. I'm happy that new people read my story, and I'm thankful for that, but there's something in my heart, like I expected for big numbers, but I didn't get what I expected.
I took deep breathes while I lay down on my bed, thinking if I should keep writing or not. I mean, what's the point in making stories if no one even reads them?
I kept taking deep breathes, trying my best to look on the bright side.
"Why did I start writing? What was the reason why I started writing in the first place?" I asked myself as I stared at the ceiling of my room.
I closed my eyes trying to think why I wrote stories. Minutes passed by and I was still trying to remember the reason why I started writing, then it finally hit me.
I started writing not because I wanted to be famous, I wrote stories not because I wanted to have many readers or something. But I started writing so that I could share my feelings with other people, I started writing because it gave me joy, it made me happy whenever I write stories. I didn't write because I wanted to be famous, but I started writing because I wanted to be happy.
That was the reason why I started writing stories. I stood up from my bed and went toward my desk and started writing stories, not thinking about who will read it. I wrote stories not thinking if someone will see or read it, I didn't think about who or how many people will read my story, I just wrote my story knowing that I'm happy, with or without readers.

"Ms. Mendez are you ready for your interview?" Mr. Arnold asked.
I'm in a studio today for some interview of the most horrifying experience that I have a year ago.
A kind of experience that will haunt me and my friends forever.
"Yes Mr. Arnold," I answered.
I composed myself first before going out of the back stage as the host call my name.
As I got out, crowds cheered my name. Some of them waving books which I wrote. Then I saw my friends sitting front row they just nod their heads as a sign of their support.
"How is your day Ms. Aria Mendez?" The host asked me.
"Perfectly fine, I guess?" I jokingly said and nodded.
I turn my head at my friends, they give me a smile telling me not to feel nervous. They shared the same experience with me for the past year.
"Ms. Aria, I won't let this opportunity to pass anymore so I would get direct to the point," The host said and let out a sigh, "Everyone here in this room is very curious about the new book that you have published, " He paused," Is it true that the book contained the whole story of what happened to you and to your friends a year ago?"
I took a deep breath and rethink my answers, "Yes it is," I paused, "No one even the police, knows the whole story of what had happened that day. But now, me together with my friends decided to break the silenced even a year has passed."
"Ms. Aria, can you tell us exactly what do you feel about the release of this book of yours?" He asked again.
"To tell you honestly, I'm so terrified that I wrote everything down exactly what had just happened. I didn't even imagined that I'll made a book out of that? Me and my friends decided to keep it a secret but the more we hide it the more it haunts us. Regrets, sadness, everything that you would feel when you watch a horror movie! The only thing is we experience it. Its a real thing. A real deal." I said in one breath. Wow! I couldn't believe myself I'm saying this?
"So you mean everything that is written here is what really happened about a year ago? About that incident?"
"Yes." I answered.
"How about your friends family? Are they okay with this?"
"Yes, I asked their permission first before publishing it. They all agree on it."
"You do realize that, after publishing this you may become a target yourself? Even the other survivors and your family as well? Did you consult the police?"
"I do. 'We' do. I know that person is watching. I know that he is itching to get me, to get 'Us'. His puzzle wont be complete without the remaining survivors from that incident. Even if I didn't publish my book that person is still going to hunt us down. That is why I'm here, announcing that I wont give up until the day he is caught."
"Ooohhh! So you are declaring a war?"
"Do I? Maybe?" I laughed at the idea.
The interview lasted for about thirty minutes.
It's now or never. I already published and shared our story. And back at the interview, I can't help but to think about what happened a year ago.
How six of our friends died. Just because of that out of town trip. Just because I let myself be fooled by someone.
"Aria!"
"How are you feeling?" Leona asked.
"I'm fine, just a little dizzy. By the way, thanks for the support...and the help. The book wouldn't be published if it weren't for you guys." I answered.
"Nah! It's nothing, okay? Don't think about it! What we should think right now is moving on, leave those things on the past, stepping our foot forward and go to the nearest diner because I am already hungry! I didn't ate anything before coming here to support my friend!" Ryan said.
Moving on? Easy to say but so hard to do. But I guess its the best choice we have? Right now, the suspect is still out there, waiting. But still...we don't know what's waiting for us in the next days of our lives.
Even though a year had already passed the memories are still fresh in my mind. And I can't forget how we struggle for our dear life to get out from that town.

          We went to the cafeteria to eat and everyone seems to have nothing else to talk about except me and the article. don't worry Elisabeth said in another two weeks they will have something else to talk about. 
       Am not worried Elizabeth the situation is under control I said. 
            Like you are trying to get the news taken down. No, I said. They look at me with eyes that were asking for details. A new article will be published not just sure how soon. It feels good to be popular I said after a pause. 
      I wonder how Carl is taking all this Elizabeth said. Just when I was thinking you two looked good together Tracy added. 
         I smiled I was not thinking about Carl but Ray. I wonder what he thought of me now with the whole news. 
          The agency should be fast and get the article published. I plan on asking him to dinner as a thank you if my story was picked by the department. We had to weeks left to submit the prose work
Five to ten best were going to get published by the school. I was hoping on it, not for the publish but my real excitement was to get an excuse to talk to Ray. Even if he turned down dinner it was fine. The most important thing was to talk to him. Maybe he would even smile at me. 
         Bella what were you even doing in the bar, I never thought you drink Tracy asked. 
I went with Jace and if you look closely you will notice his picture was also in the news. I then explained everything to them. 
   Who would use such a method on you, Tracy asked. 
Am not sure I replied. 
Maybe it Carl die heart crush Elizabeth said. 
I laughed how is that possible I asked. Anything is possible we have to think wide. The idiots might have tried to look for something dirty about you and not finding anything decided to create their own story Elizabeth explains. 
    Now that I think of it that may be the case. Tracy said. I just nod. The only thing I am sure of is that this can not be a coincidence. We all continue to eat food. 
    After a few minutes, the place became noisy  all of a sudden. Look it Carl Tracy said. I turned and look he is coming towards us Elizabeth said.
           Maybe he wants to ask you about the article Tracy said. I nod because that was the same thought in my mind.
     Hello ladies he said as soon as he got to our table. Hi, he took a sit with us. I was sitting right opposite Lisa's table and I could see her eyes go angry with Carl coming to sit with us.
      About the article, I was saying. 
   Please Bella I don't want to hear anything about it. I like the only thing I have heard since yesterday. Whoever wrote it was trying to keep me away from you he said. You are not worried it may be true I said surprised at his reaction.
     No am not. It my fault all this happened, I should have prepared you for it. Anybody can feel a little frustrated and have some drinks and loss a little control. You know celebrities can do the same it like we are superhumans. Midian just finds a way to make it look like one has done the thinkable.
         Again if you were a flirt trust me I would know. I spent the whole of Saturday with you. It takes less than those hours for me to know a flirt. The part about you been a gold digger maybe that part is true so all I have to do, is to make more money to keep you happy.
        I laughed this guy is something. Now let go somewhere else this place is too crowded and give people something new to talk about I smile. Carl is really sweet I thought. Do you want to come along he asked Tracy and Elizabeth who said yes and got up before he was done asking? 
I turned to look for Clare as I sent her a message before getting up. Gladness said I could not take chances and I couldn't be too careful.

It was getting late, and the sun was coming down.
Lu Zhou sat in front of his desk as he stared at his computer screen with a headache. He stared at the blinking text cursor and suddenly shook his head.
He had to publish a thesis that wouldn't disclose any "industry secrets", or even any specific academic information. However, that thesis had to show the world that the Jinling Institute for Advanced Study had made a major breakthrough in lithium-air batteries…
Also, he had to make his paper as impactful as possible…
How the f*ck am I supposed to "just write this"?
Lu Zhou had been in academia for many years, but this was the first time he faced a situation like this.
He scratched his head and wanted to give up. Suddenly, the test tube on the corner of his desk caught his eye.
Inspiration flowed through his brain like a tsunami.
He stood up from his chair and exclaimed, "I got it!"
Since he couldn't write about specific lithium-air battery technical details, it was better to focus on the mathematical model. He could simply publish a computational materials science paper and avoid talking about the lithium-air battery.
His eyes began to lit up, and his hands began to move across the keyboard. He typed a title line on the previously blank document.

When Lu Zhou read the title, he couldn't help but praise himself, "I'm a genius!"
The patent application for the caged carbon molecules had already been completed. Even though he adjusted several large π bonds on the caged carbon molecules, he still had the patent rights. 
He already completed the experiment and had all of the data, so even one of his students could easily write this thesis.
Lu Zhou spent a couple of hours writing and formatting the paper.
After he converted it to PDF format, he attached the file into an email and looked at his email list. He clicked with his mouse and thought about where to submit this paper.
Nature?
Science?
Neither of them sounds good.
This kind of boring result is going to take a long time to get published. The most important thing is to make this as impactful and sensational as possible.
Lu Zhou made up his mind.
Since it's such a bad paper, I'm not going to submit it to Nature.
After some consideration, Lu Zhou sent the email to the JACS editorial department.
Even though JACS wasn't as famous as Nature and Science, it still had a high impact factor in the materials science and chemistry fields. It was one of the top journals in its respective field.
The paper Lu Zhou wrote on the "Theoretical Model of Electrochemical Interface Structure", which won him the Nobel Prize, was submitted to JACS. 
Because he reviewed some papers for the journal, he had a good relationship with the editorial department. Thus, his paper wouldn't take long to get approved. 
After all of that, Lu Zhou stretched his back and went to bed.

The other side of the world, America.
Someone in the editorial department of JACS exclaimed, "Jesus, Kanov, guess what I just received in my mailbox? Professor Lu's paper!" 
Kanov looked at Agris, the editor-in-chief, and was shocked.
"Wait a second, what did you say? Professor Lu's paper? He's back to materials science?"
Agris smiled and said, "What do you mean back, he never left materials science. Have you forgotten who the founder of the theoretical model of computational materials and electrochemical interfaces is? Who the 2018 Nobel Prize winner was!"
The JACS journal had published many Nobel Prize level papers; however, Agris personally reviewed and approved the 2018 Nobel Prize in Chemistry paper!
That achievement alone was enough for him to brag for the rest of his life.
Kanov quietly muttered, "But he doesn't seem to think so."
"That doesn't matter! What matters is what we think! Forget about this, let me have a look first," Agris said as he printed out the paper and began to read.
Kanov saw that Agris had a weird look on his face. He hesitated for a moment before asking the editor-in-chief, "What's in the paper?"
"Oxygen molecule transportation using caged carbon molecules in modified PDMS material… Jesus, it's about lithium-air batteries!" Agris took a deep breath and turned the page as he said, "I've heard rumors that the Jinling Institute for Advanced Study is researching lithium-air batteries and that their project leader is Yang Xu!" 
Kanov knew of Yang Xu. He had an emotional look on his face.
"The author of this paper is Lu Zhou…"
"Yeah." Agris gulped and pinched the manuscript with his hand as he said, "Kanov, do you know what this means? This means they might have been successful!"
Kanov didn't know why Agris kept answering his own questions. 
However, he realized why his editor-in-chief was making such a big deal out of this.
Based on his past experience, when it came to popular academic research projects, after the research team made a breakthrough, they often restrained from immediately publishing their results.
Even if they did publish, it was because they were forced to "present their results". Often times, they would publish trivial research that couldn't inspire their competitors.
Yang Xu, for example, hadn't published a single paper in the past year. However, everyone knew that his research team was making good progress.
Now that Lu Zhou suddenly published this paper…
Not to mention that the paper was about a huge breakthrough.
There was only one possibility, which was that the Jinling Institute for Advanced Study had already obtained a patent for this technology, and might have even matured the technology!
This was the only explanation as to why they were willing to publish such a revealing thesis.
There was no question regarding if this paper would get published.
The problem was finding the right reviewer.
Agris looked at Kanov and asked, "Who else is in this research area?"
Kanov thought for a second and said, "Professor Jeff Dahn from Dalhousie University in Canada. He's a pioneer in the industrial application of LiNixMnyCozO2 and did good research on lithium batteries. He has published countless Science papers… I think he's a good choice." 
Agris contemplated for a second and said, "It might be difficult. He's working on an IBM project, so he might not have the free time. We have to find an expert, but not a competitor."
"That's going to be difficult."
Kanov scratched his head, and a name suddenly appeared in his mind. His eyes lit up as he said, "I know someone! He's the perfect choice!"
Agris asked, "Who?"
"Professor Stanley Whittingham from Binghamton University! He's published this paper on titanium sulfide cathodes. I think he's no longer doing experiments, but I still remember how shocked I was when I first read his paper…"
Agris began to look impatient, so Kanov quickly added, "I noticed that Professor Lu referenced a result from Professor Stanley's caged carbon molecules.
"He's the perfect reviewer for this thesis!"
