Ailen felt like he's underwater.
The sound of the cold wind, chattering, music, everything was muffled. His mind cavorted, his heart skipped one and two beats.
The air inside his lungs abruptly sucked out when his gaze fell onto those gorgeous amber eyes that shone under the moonlight. He has messy raven-colored hair with a wispy overgrown fringe that nearly covered his bright, feline-like eyes that made Ailen's heart stuttered—like he's holding the secrets of the universe within them.
"Cat got your tongue?"
Ailen blinked rapidly, snapping out of his dazed state.
The elder male reclined his back on the railings, a glass of wine on his other hand as he smirked down at the white-haired boy.
"N-No," Ailen wanted to slap himself for stuttering. "Uh, sorry. I thought there's no one here,"
"Ah, do you mind if I keep you company then?"
Ailen only nodded timidly before taking a couple of steps forward onto the railings that are significantly taller than him. Ailen inhaled the cool air, feeling tranquility leisurely surging into his lungs— like a river.
"It's sure is unexpected," The stranger started to fill in the comfortable silence. Ailen glanced at those amber eyes that didn't leave his own. "To hear the Crown Prince woke up from his slumber,"
Ailen gave a lopsided smile before looking back at the starry sky. "Yeah. I can't believe it myself,"
'Can't believe I woke up in someone else's body,' Ailen thought bitterly.
"His Majesty The Emperor already selected an heir while you're sleeping. I can guess you think everyone in Vyre is against you. Which is not correct,"
Ailen raised one of his eyebrows. "What?"
The stranger chuckled airly. "Pardon my manners. My name is El. I apologize for my rambling. Especially towards someone so important, but I wish to ease your mind, Your Highness,"
The stranger, who's known as El, smiled fondly toward Ailen. He took a sip of his wine.
"Could you elaborate, sir El?"
"Just call me El. And yes, I shall," El nodded, his raven locks fell onto his eyebrows. "The people of Vyre prayed for your health ever since you were born. They're anxious every day, already guessing your health wouldn't recover. It was The Emperor who announced that he would select an heir. The Duke's son, Nicolas. The people were hesitant at first, but they didn't have a choice. They don't have the power to wake you up, Your Highness,"
El's words soothed Ailen thoroughly. Ailen hummed happily, smiling at El, who's mirroring his look.
"I see. Then, do you know my enemies?"
"Of course," El shrugged, taking another sip. "You already found an enemy who is closer than you think. Time for you to figure out the rest of them,"
The Emperor.
The rest? Unknown. But Ailen could guess a couple. The Duke and his family. Ailen hummed again.
"You seemed to know a lot of things, El. Do you always talk with others like this?"
"Absolutely not," El's chuckle made Ailen's stomach swooped. "Your Highness, I know we just met, but this isn't the first time I met you. I've met you before, a couple of times,"
"Really? When?"
The raven-haired male didn't reply. He merely smiled mysteriously at Ailen.
"We'll meet again soon, Your Highness. It would be best if you headed back inside. Your faithful maids were looking for you,"
"My mai—"
"Your Highness! There you are!"
Before Ailen could finish his sentence, Meredith and Irma walked through the glass doors and head toward Ailen on the balcony. Ailen blinked at them, then whipped his head toward El.
Which, was nowhere to be found.

"W-Who was that???" screamed Hal Jordan as he watched his counterpart in a different dimension being killed in such a gruesome way

"I do not know, I only know his name and that he originates from a universe where superman had created a regime of individuals, presumably from the justice league, who took control of the world with fear and that he lost his loved ones to your counterparts, driving him down the path of revenge," the Stranger said as Batman asked,

"How many versions of Justice League did he destroy till now?" to this the Stranger gave a sad smile as she said,

"Countless, including my own, but there is always a pattern for his movements," she said as she inserted a data chip into the desk revealing a few members of the justice league on the holograms,

"Although there are some exceptions, he always seems to target a few specific members of the justice league, Dr.Fate, Hal, John Stewart, Shayera, Arthur, Barry and me, he would also go after a certain member of the bat family but since I found out that he does not exist in this universe thanks to a secret investigation, I do not feel the need to inform you," she said as the abovementioned members stayed silent as they came to terms with the fact the there was a dimension-hopping psycho who was targeting them specifically no matter what iteration it may be, it was then that the resident martial asked,

"Then what about the others?"

"Strangely enough, he seems to avoid killing the younger ones, such as the teen titans who were an equivalent of the team that you have here with the exception of kid flash who happens to be a different person as well as the absence of a Tamaran by the name of Koriand'r  and another meta by the name of beast boy, he also does not attack Martian Manhunter and Green Arrow along with many other superheroes including Batman, although there have been times when he was forced to kill you when Bruce got too close to revealing his secret for his comfort," she said as Superman interrupted,

"Then what about me?" to this the Stranger winced as said with a wry smile,

"He hates you the most Kal, there has never been an instance where he killed you quickly, no, he always makes sure to kill you in the most agonizing way possible, he keeps you alive for weeks to months on end as he first destroys your mind by killing anything you hold dear, then, when you ask for the sweet release of death, he gives it to you in the most painful way possible, in such a way that even your soul after your death would not forget such pain," she said to the pale Kryptonian as Shazam looked on the verge of throwing up from just hearing it, she then looked towards Shazam and said,

"Don't worry Billy, it seems that he has a soft spot for you because he never killed you, in any of the universes he traveled to, most of the time, he used foul magic that he called 'The Fel' to steal all your power and let you be, which reminds me, where is Supergirl?" she asked as everyone aside from one person looked at her in confusion,

"The who now?" Flash asked as realization dawned on Stranger's face as she glared towards Batman,

"Bruce, you did not tell them?"

"I did not tell them because I was afraid that it would make them panic and given how closely related to 'him' this issue is, I chose to withhold this information"

"Did not tell us what???" Diana shouted, tired of hearing all of the things her counterpart was telling them

"Telling you people that Kal is not the only Kryptonian on this planet," the Stranger said as Superman looked at her in shock, she, in turn, looked at batman with a glare, making him sigh and stand up as many images and calculations started to appear on everyone's screens,

"Over one year ago, our satellites picked up a particular wave of signal from deep space whose origin was unknown to anyone that was not in the know, the signal was of Kryptonian origin, sometime later, I managed to decode the message into a distress signal sent out by a ship that was quite similar to the pod that you arrived in Kal," he said as Superman was doing his best to keep in his anger but failed as his fingers dug into the metal desk in front of him,

"After an entire month of searching, I finally traced the signal all the way to the dark side of the moon and found an empty Kryptonian escape pod, reviewing the data retrieved from the pod gave me this information," he said as the screen in front of everyone flickered to show a beautiful woman with golden hair and blue eyes,

"Kara Zor El, Kryptonian, and your birth cousin Kal-" was as far as he got before Superman held him up in the air by grabbing his collar,

"Why?, Bruce, Why did you hide this information from me? the fact that I have a real blood-related family?" Kal El shouted as Bruce replied in a voice which poured cold water on Superman's anger,

"Because there is a high possibility that she is dead," he said as superman let him go in shock,

"When my ships got there the pod was empty, so I thought that she might have already arrived on Earth so I began to search every inch of the planet, then I found this," he said as he showed another image, in this image, she was dressed in a black suit and was walking behind the same man that had killed Hal in the previous video,

"NO!!" Kal shouted as the rest of the league looked on, in shock,

"At that time, I did not know who this man was so I dug deep into his background, and what I found was disturbing, a lot of places and at a lot of times, his influence could be felt everywhere, but what truly shook me to the core was this" Batman said as he played another video,

"This video is two days old," he said as it started to play

The video showed batman working on his computer in the bat cave when suddenly, all the screens fizzled out and showed the image of Alex,

'Hello, Batman, or should I say, Bruce Wayne, did you have fun going through all the data that I allowed you to look at? if yes then you are going to like this even more,' he said as he moved aside to reveal the tied up form of Kara, she was restrained in chains that gave off a green glow similar to a Kryptonite, she was also injured in many places where her blood was flowing freely from,

'Just in case you don't know, which I know not to be true, this is Kara Zor El, the cousin of dear old superman, oh! and just so you know, I don't want any ransom, this is just a message, tell superman that he is next' was all he said before the video was cut off

The video ended as Superman's eyes glowed in deep red,

When she nodded her head, he added, "So I want you to stay with Sebastian and his sister until I come back. Now, is that too much to ask?" 
Keeping quiet for quite some time, she agreed. "Fine but just because I don't want you to worry about me." 
Giving her a hug, Albert smiled, "That's like my good girl."

"Dude, you got a puppy?" Noah chuckled.
Taking a sip from his coffee, Calvin muttered, "This guy is busted already." 
"I know right? I mean weren't you afraid of dogs or anything furry?" Noah curiously asked. He very well remembered how much Sebastian freaked out whenever he saw anything furry, especially dogs of any size.
"Hey, you remember the time when he ran away like a mad man when he saw a Chihuahua in my place?" Calvin chuckled.
Sebastian frowned and retorted, "Hey, don't compare your unruly, wild and arrogant dog with our Boji. She is so sweet and adorable just like El." 
Placing his hand on his chest, Noah sighed, "How sweet, now why don't you bake cookies for us Mrs Miller?"
Spitting out coffee all over the desk, Calvin coughed vigorously and started laughing out loud. "Oh man that was a good one." 
"Do you think this is funny? Come on guys, I called you both over to discuss a very important thing so can you both stop messing around? Tease me as much as you want after you help me sort this out," 
Sensing the seriousness of the matter, Noah asked, "What happened?"
"So Ellie asked me whether I went for any date after she join work and—"
Cutting him off, Calvin gasped, "And you lied to her." 
"Dude, how can you lie to a woman? Have you lost your mind?" Noah snapped.
Sebastian gulped in nervousness and hesitantly asked, "What is the worst consequence of this?"
"No sex for an entire week—"
"Sometimes a whole month," Calvin added.
Massaging his forehead, Noah sighed, "I don't even want to think about it. The last time I lied to Melissa, she didn't let me touch her for two whole days and refused to talk to me."
"Hey but El and Seb aren't in that sex phase right now." Calvin reminded them.
Sebastian sighed and nodded his head. Forget about the sex phase, they were not even in the first phase. He was yet to propose to her and tell her about his feelings.
"Okay so the worst consequence is Ellie stops talking to you, no hugs and—"
Cutting Noah off, Calvin added, "No sandwiches." 
Sebastian widened his eyes in shock and panicked, "W—what? No sandwiches?" 
Calving frowned and retorted, "You care about sandwiches more than Ellie not talking to you?" 
"Forget about that Cal because that is not the real point, our main concern now is how are we going to help Seb keep this thing away from El." 
Calvin nodded his head and readily agreed, "Yes, since he has already lied, that is the only thing we can do." 
Keeping quiet for quite some time, Sebastian added, "That is not the only problem actually." Without waiting for their reply, he continued, "Mom wants Charlotte to stay with Ava and me until Mr Nelson is back from his business trip." 
"You gotta be kidding me, Sebastian Stewart you are so fucking dead." 
Massaging his forehead, Noah sighed, "Why does she keep making things difficult for you and Ava?" 
"Your mom is pure evil," Calvin snapped.
"She said that she would fly back if we refused to take care of her so I had no other choice. I don't want her to come back at least until I propose to Ellie and make our relationship official." Sebastian explained.
Placing his hand on his chest, Noah smiled, "My Seb has finally transformed into a real man." Wiping his non-existing tears away, he sighed, "He is all grown up now." 
"I know right? Ellie really awakened the hibernating man within him." Clapping his hands, Calvin suggested, "I have an awesome plan." 
"What?" Sebastian and Noah blurted out in union.
"Why don't you shift Ava and Charlotte to another apartment? I mean you obviously cannot keep her in your apartment because El is gonna kick your ass if you do that." 
Sebastian frowned and said, "I can't keep Ava with a stranger like that. I mean we don't know what kind of a woman she is right?" 
"I agree with Seb on that." 
Pretending to think for a while, Calvin asked, "Why don't I keep them in my place?" When both of them gave him a weird look, he added, "You see, my place isn't far from yours and I have three spare rooms so they can keep one each. I am always in my office working hard to earn a living so the girls can have all the privacy they want." 
Thinking for quite some time, Noah said, "Hmm I think that isn't a bad idea, it's Calvin after all and we can totally trust Ava with him right? He is like her brother two." 
Giving him a weak smile, Calvin nodded his head. 
"Alright then, let's go with that plan and I hope we won't fuck this up," Without waiting for their reply, Sebastian asked, "Owen's house warming party is tomorrow right?" 
"Uh-huh it's tomorrow, you and El are coming right?" 
"Of course we are." Glancing at his watch, he added, "We are going shopping today, we need to buy so many things for Boji."

It's 3am on a cold Friday night Lawrence exits his office, locking the doors. Lawrence walks to his car on the quiet downtown Dallas street, as he gets near his car Lawrence notices a grey van pull up, but he payed it no mind. Car keys in hand unlocking his Mercedes with his back turned to the street. Suddenly Lawrence hears a voice from behind. "Lawrence Monroe?" says the unknown voice. Lawrence turns to the man, it's Kilo dressed in all black with a rolled up ski mask covering his head like a beanie and black leather gloves, the grey van lurking in the background. Lawrence catches Kilo off guard punching him in the jaw staggering him, then Lawrence frantically gets into his Mercedes starting it up and putting the gear in drive. But before he could take off, 2 hooded GCM goons pop up from the darkness in front of Lawrence's Mercedes armed with glocks, aiming them at a panicking Lawrence, blocking his departure. Lawrence knows theres nowhere for him to go and exits his vehicle. Lawrence has his hands up, the 2 goons pat down Lawrence looking for weapons. "Glock...rear waistband." Lawrence says narrowing down the search. The goons find his 2 tone glock given to him by Sebastian and gives it to Kilo. Kilo instantly recognizes the gun putting on a sinister smile with his long dreadlocks covering his eyes only revealing his shiny gold teeth. "Toss this nigga in the back, and ziptie them hands." The goons tie Lawrence's wrists behind his back and uneasily try to force him into the van as he tries to get free from the clutches of the goons, but is unsuccessful and thrown into the back of the van. Kilo walks to the back of the van where Lawrence is. "Oh yeah, I almost forgot." Kilo says to Lawrence spitting a disgusting ball of blood onto his face from the punch Lawrence gave him. "Nice sucker punch, bitch." Kilo says in a deep tone. A zip tied Lawrence is so livid by the disrespect that he lunges toward Kilo, but Kilo anticipates it and strikes Lawrence with a vicious boot to the face knocking him out. Kilo hops in the back of the van with a bound, and unconscious Lawrence, closing the van doors as it speeds away down the sleepy metropolis. 

       Kilo and his crew bring Lawrence to an empty house in GCM territory and drag his unconscious body through the house into a den that's lined with plastic and sit him in a folding chair, Kilo orders his guys to wait out front to watch for opps. An unconscious Lawrence is slouched in the chair as Kilo showers him with a bucket of cold water covering his face and grey Armani suit waking him up. A bewildered Lawrence exhales deeply. "Welcome back Mr. Law." Says Kilo with a smirk dropping the empty bucket on the wooden plastic-covered floor. "Look man I'm just a Lawyer, I don't got shit to do with the streets anymore I been out the game 5 years now." Lawrence explains as he discreetly tries to free his hands. "This ain't about you, it's about that brother of yours." Kilo answers pulling out the two-tone glock and tossing it to another room, the gun sounds as if it's been caught by someone. Sounds of footsteps approach toward the den. The footsteps are revealed to be Hollow's as he enters the room standing next to Kilo with the glock in his hand. Lawrence doesn't recognize Hollow but feels as if he looks familiar. Hollow holds up the glock showcasing it. "This...is my shit...the same gun your brother stole out of one of my traps 2 months ago along with alotta my fuckin money...and the same gun you had on you, which leads me to believe you were in on it." Says Hollow calmly. "I don't know wtf you're talkin about, my brother gave me that gun years ago." Lawrence lies. Hollow and Kilo look at each other grinning from ear to ear then Hollow looks back at Lawrence. "Are you fuckin serious right now? Everybody in The Grove know he's been robbin us blind, his days are numbered and so are yours if you don't tell us where that nigga is, then...we'll go after her." Hollow shows Lawrence a picture captured by his goons across the street from his moms house of Layla getting into her car. Lawrence scans the picture with an expression of sorrow, that expression quickly transforms into a death stare at Hollow. "I'm gonna fuckin kill both of y-" Kilo interrupts by striking Lawrence with a ferocious punch to his defenseless stomach with his leather-gloved right hand, Lawrence coughs up a small amount of blood, a little stream of blood drips down to his chin. Kilo bends down and comes face to face with an bruised and battered Lawrence, while Hollow leans up against a wall smoking a cigarette watching. "Tell us where he is or I'll personally pay a visit to mommy dearest and let my boys take turns fucking her until that pussy is broken." Said Kilo with a sick and twisted grin. Lawrence's eyes turn white hot and glances at a window next to him then turns his attention back to Kilo, his adrenaline starts to build up and explodes like an erupting volcano. Lawrence poetically spits blood into Kilos face to antagonize him. "Heh, nice sucker punch bitch." Said Lawrence smiling showing his blood stained teeth. Kilo is extremely angered by this, backs away slowly and wipes his face violently with his hand, he then snatches the glock from Hollows hand and aims it at Lawrence's head, but Lawrence finally free's himself from his zip tie restraints and briskly grabs the glock with both hands to wrestle it away from Kilo, Lawrence and Kilo play tug of war with the glock, Hollow uninterestedly watches them shaking his head and taking drags from his cigarette, as Lawrence's index finger finds the trigger while it's still in Kilos hand. Lawrence forcefully tries to turn the glock toward Kilos head, Kilo tries to avoid it by kicking Lawrence in the leg but it does nothing to deter him and Lawrence overpowers Kilo finally getting a clear headshot, Lawrence pulls the trigger but the bullet misses Kilo's head and hits him in the shoulder. Lawrence wins the fight over the gun and Kilo loses all of his bravado from the gunshot wound falling to the floor holding his bloody shoulder in agony. Unnoticed by Lawrence, Hollow pulls out his chrome desert eagle, shooting Lawrence in the ribs. Lawrence aimlessly turns his gun on Hollow and shoots back at him while holding his bloody ribs. Hollow takes cover behind a wall with bullets whizzing by his head and shattering windows behind him. Lawrence lifts up the window that's next to him groaning from the pain of his shot ribs. Hollow peeks out scanning the den but Lawrence has already jumped out of the window. The 2 GCM goons who were keeping watch hear the shots and run in with guns drawn. "He just hopped out the fuckin window! Go kill that nigga and don't fuckin come back till his ass is fuckin dead!" Hollow yells to his goons checking on an injured Kilo as they run back outside to find Lawrence. "This bitch ass nigga stay whoopin yo ass I swear. You a fuckin disappointment man." Says Hollow insulting Kilo as he tends to his wound. Lawrence limps down the middle of a street that's lit up with streetlights, some flickering some not. Lawrence is still holding his ribs with one hand and holding the glock with the other, leaving a blood trail behind him. A car comes into Lawrence's view in the distance ahead. As it slowly approaches, Lawrence recognizes its an El Camino. He conceals his glock on his rear waistband under his bloody suit jacket so he won't spook the driver, and waves one arm above him signaling for the car to stop. The occupant in the El Camino see's the signal and stops alongside Lawrence. A blonde-haired slender white man exits his El Camino leaving his door ajar and see's the gunshot wound. "Oh shit man, we gotta get you to a hospital." The stranger insists as he puts Lawrence's arm around him helping him walk towards the El Camino, the stranger walks Lawrence to the passenger side and helps him get in, dark colored blood covering his leather seats. Then as the stranger is about to close the passenger door out of nowhere a bullet pierces the strangers windshield followed by several more gunshots.



The startled stranger quickly slams the passenger door ducks down, and crawls toward the driver side. Bullet after bullet strikes the idle El Camino causing a barrage of sparks to fly through the air and glass to rain down on the stranger as he crawls in terror. Bullets strike all over the cars fender shattering the headlights and knocking off the driver side mirror, but the stranger is luckily not hit and barely makes it to the driver side. The stranger urgently jumps in the driver seat slamming the door and reverses. The goons continue to fire shots at the reversing El Camino until both of their clips are empty, but unfortunately for them they didn't kill Lawrence or the stranger causing them to get away. "Fuck!" One the goons yells echoing throughout the neighborhood. The 2 goons lower their empty, smoking guns, get into the grey van and follow them urgently.

Lawrence"Law" Monroe a soon to be lawyer and native to the city of Dallas, Texas  goes on a difficult journey struggling with the uneasy balances of staying clean and getting his hands dirty, but body bags and bullet casings tend to tip the scales of this fictional world more often than not.

"There you are! I've been looking all over for you!"
 Eliana Hunt – or El as she so much preferred to be called – spun around at the familiar, friendly voice, and smiled.
 It was Raven, a good friend of hers. El noticed that even though she was wrapped up snugly in her warmest white winter coat, you can still tell that she was a very attractive young lady, tall and with model-like features. Her heterochromatic eyes glistened under the Christmas lights that decorated the mall, and her long black hair waved from side to side like a silky dark waterfall peeking out from beneath her woolly hat, a contrast to her pale, creamy complexion. A few admirers couldn't help but glance in her direction as she quickened up her stride towards El.
 "Look at you," El grinned. "You look great! What's your secret?"
 "Hmm, let's see." Raven pretended to think. "Staying up late reading novels, binge-watching chick-flicks and stuffing my face with potato chips." The girls laughed and started to make their way into a gift shop at the corner of the mall.
 The Christmas holiday had begun, and the girls are making most of their spare time away from school and their studies. Although it was a vital year for them both – they would be doing their finals soon – they felt that they really deserved a break, and agreed to flip the schedule so that they would only study super hard during the weekends.
 And so far, they have kept their pact.
 On this particular day, they were doing their Christmas shopping. El admired the dazzling snow-globes lined-up along a shelf. She spotted one that displayed an old lady standing in front of a house, hugging a little girl. They both had such warm, joyful expressions, despite the frosty world they lived in.
 "What do you think of this? You know, for Gran," El pointed at it. She was afraid to pick it up or even to touch it, as she was well aware of her own innate clumsiness.
 Raven looked over from her shelf of Christmas cards and beamed.
 "Oh El, that is so sweet!" she gushed. "You have to get it for her." The subtle acts of kindness and consideration for others were among some of the things she loved about El. Although they had not been friends for long – Raven had just transferred from another school the year before – they had become close very quickly, within their little circle of friends.
 El was pretty. By no means was she model-like, but she had a very girl-next-door look about her, with soft, wavy brown hair and striking icy blue eyes that looked extra sparkly during the Christmas season. She was slim, athletic and petite. Raven easily towered over her, but somehow, they had enough in common to be on the same wavelength in most conversations.
 Shopping-wise, they were perfect companions for each other.
 Christmas in Brommesville emitted a pleasant and cheerful atmosphere. Lively, chattering families strolled from place to place, and the sales people were happy to welcome the fresh influx of school kids, new customers who were usually in school at this time, into their shops. Restaurants were packed with people in festive spirits, and overall, there was a delightful ambience that is less seen during any other time during the year. On the outside, it seemed… almost like… as if there was nothing wrong at all with this little city.
 "I miss Gem," Raven piped up suddenly, flipping through a notebook that she thought her friend would like. Everyone knew that Gem liked to keep things organized. "I wonder how she's doing on holiday with her parents. Hope she's having a good time."
 "Yeah, me too." El didn't want to show it, but she missed Gem a lot. They were really close friends, and Gem's parents had even offered to take El on vacation with them to Thailand. It was a country El had dreamed of going, the sun, the sand, the sea, the elephants and pineapples! But she simply couldn't leave her grandmother alone all Christmas. And as much as she wishes to, now was not a good time to leave her important job…
 So, she opted out, and wished her bestie a safe flight.
 "I kinda wish it was like the old days," Raven started absent-mindedly. "You know, us four, with me, you, Gem and…"
 She stopped. The air was still. El could see the regret in Raven's eyes at the mention of such nostalgic days.
 "Yeah," El quickly spluttered an agreement, trying to spare her friend the shame and save the conversation, "those were great times."
 They were obviously avoiding the topic of a very special someone… Parker. Raven had liked Parker a lot. There was a way with Parker that made everyone feel very much like an invaluable part of the group. He drew people close, engaged them, and kept his friendship consistent. Well, within the little group, anyway. Only El knew his true colors, after their last encounter, just moments before his death.
 But no one else had to know.
 Both she and Gem were unclear about how Raven saw Parker – as a companion? A significant other? Or was he merely a close friend she cared about deeply? Either way, the topic was best left untouched. Parker's death hit Raven very hard indeed, and wounds need time to heal.
 A collision into the shoulder of another human being almost sent El tumbling to the ground, right in the hearth of the mall.
 "Sorry! Oh, are you ok?"
 El rubbed her shoulder and looked up to meet her match. A tall freckly boy with concerned googly eyes stared right back at her. His breath smelt of strawberries, his brown hair was a little wild, and his flyers that were knocked out from his hands from the impact were now laden all over the ground like dirty laundry flung around by a two-year-old in a tantrum.
 "Yeah, I'm good." El bent to help pick up the flyers and the boy's ears turned crimson with embarrassment. He didn't seem to know what to do right away, but then proceeded to gingerly pick up his flyers too while thanking her sincerely. Raven quickly came over to help. When they're done, the girls began to walk away… only to be called after by the boy.
 "How would you guys like to join our voluntary group?"
 The girls exchanged glances and slowed their pace to a halt. The boy came around to them eagerly. El eyed him suspiciously, and even Raven stood taller, accentuating her height as a means of protection. One can never be too careful, especially when you are asked to join something within minutes of meeting a stranger. Now that El had a closer look, she realized that the boy's googly eyes looked even bigger, and they had the strangest tint of blue to them, almost like water.
 "Sorry, not the best of introductions," he smiled awkwardly, handing a flyer out each to the girls. "My name is Fraser, and I'm part of a voluntary group based here in Brommesville. We are just a couple of enthusiastic people who want to help this city become a better place." Raven started reaching for her purse, but Fraser raised his hand to stop her. "We aren't looking for funds, but we would always wish to find people willing to serve those who need the most help."
 Fraser turned around and pointed to a side exit of the mall.
 "If you go through there, you will see a big pink building. That is an old hospital for sick children." He suddenly looked a bit sad. "It is a hard time for them during Christmas. Some kids' parents live far away in another city to work and support the family, and won't be able to make it back for Christmas. Some are orphans. And those with families with them just won't have enough energy to play."
 The three of them were quiet, digesting the scenarios for a moment.
 "There are only seven of us working as volunteers in this hospital at the moment. Most volunteers have plans and are going to spend time with their families. Some are no-shows. We badly need more volunteers. Just to make the lives of these kids that little bit brighter."
 "What about… you?" El asked. "Will you be there too, or would you have plans?" Raven nudged her. El could be so abrupt sometimes.
 But the young boy didn't seem to mind. In fact, he was almost glad El had asked as he looked at her with such silent, melancholy eyes, it almost took her breath away. They spoke a thousand words, words she recognized, words that seemingly hit too close to home, at one point in her life. Though she wasn't sure why she felt that way.
 "Ah. I have no home to go to. This group is my home. They had looked after me when I needed them most, and now it is my time to repay such kindness." The sincerity tugging at his gentle vocal chords urged the girls to let down their guards, if just for a little while. They were hesitant initially, what with all the crime going on in this town, one cannot be too careful. But perhaps one little visit won't hurt.
 El and Raven exchanged glances again. It was decided.
 "I'll join!" El said confidently. She was taking a break from her part-time job at the café, so she would have plenty of time to go twice or three times a week. Besides, she felt… a certain connection with the children. It would be nice to spend time with them…
 "Me too!" Raven added with a smile, breaking into her thoughts, and reaching for the pen in Fraser's hand.


 "Did you see his eyes light up?" El said to Raven, as they sat down to grab a bite to eat. "When we said we'll join?"
 "Yeah!" Raven laughed, removing her coat. "He must be really surprised. I bet other people do not say "yes" so easily. He was just like a little boy who had just gotten the biggest present from Santa!"
 El looked out the window. She could still see Fraser handing out flyers.
 Maybe he is, she thought to herself.
