New Study Narrows the Range of Uncertainty in Future Climate Projections

Recently, an international research team published a comprehensive review in the journal Reviews of Geophysics on our state of understanding of Earth's "climate sensitivity," a key measure of how much our climate will change as greenhouse gas emissions increase. Essentially, by narrowing the range of estimates, the researchers found that climate sensitivity isn't so low that it should be ignored, but it's also not so high that there is no hope for the planet's recovery.
We asked the two NASA authors on the study — Kate Marvel, jointly of Columbia University in New York and NASA's Goddard Institute of Space Studies (GISS) in New York; and GISS Director Gavin Schmidt — to discuss their roles in the study and its significance for understanding the impacts of our warming world on climate.
Q. What exactly is climate sensitivity and why is it important to know its true value?
Schmidt: "We know from studies of the past that Earth's climate can change dramatically. The evidence shows that the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere can vary over time and make a big difference to the climate. Scientists try to quantify that by estimating how much the surface air temperature, averaged over the whole globe, would change if we doubled the amount of one typical but specific greenhouse gas – carbon dioxide. That number, called climate sensitivity, has quite a wide uncertainty range, and that has big implications for how serious human-made climate change will be."
Q. Your team was able to narrow the range of estimates of Earth's climate sensitivity by more than 43 percent, from the previously accepted range of 1.5 to 4.5 Kelvin first established in 1979 (roughly 3 to 9 degrees Fahrenheit), to a narrower range of 2.6 to 3.9 Kelvin (roughly 4.5 to 7 degrees Fahrenheit). Why is it important for scientists to narrow this range of uncertainty? What does it mean in practical terms to be able to reduce uncertainties in measuring climate sensitivity?
Schmidt: "Scientists would like to reduce that uncertainty so that we can have more confidence in how we need to mitigate and adapt to future changes. For instance, how much sea level might rise, or how heat waves will get worse, or rainfall patterns change, are tied to the climate sensitivity combined with our actions in changing the atmosphere. A higher climate sensitivity would mean we would have to do more to avoid big changes, while a lower value would mean we'd have more time to adapt. It's useful to note that we expect to reach double carbon dioxide levels later this century, and that while a few degrees might not seem like much, it's a big deal for the planet. The difference between forests beyond the Arctic Circle or glaciers extending down to New York City is only a range of about 8 K (about 14 degrees Fahrenheit) in the global average, while it changes sea level by 150 meters (more than 400 feet)!"

Q. How can better estimates of climate sensitivity impact policy decisions?
Marvel: "The most important thing about climate sensitivity is that it's not zero. Increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide definitely makes it warmer and increases the risk of extreme weather like drought, downpours, and heat waves. But better estimates of climate sensitivity are important for motivating action. Our results show that it would be foolish to rely on nature to save us from climate change — we don't think it's likely that sensitivity is low. But conversely, it's unlikely that climate sensitivity is so high as to make action pointless."
Schmidt: "I'm not sure that our policy decisions are that finely tuned to the science of climate sensitivity other than knowing that climate really is sensitive to increasing greenhouse gases. Many climate policies are robust to those uncertainties, but many adaptation decisions will depend on knowing how bad things will get."
Q. Why has it been so difficult over the past 40 years to narrow this range? What made this new estimate possible?
Schmidt: "There are three main reasons why this has been difficult. First, knowledge of past climate change has been difficult to quantify in globally coherent ways. Of course, we have known about the ice ages for a century or more, but getting accurate estimates of the global changes in temperature, greenhouse gases, and ice sheets has taken time and has needed many scientists working on many different aspects of the problem to come together. Second, the climate change signal has taken time to come out of the 'noise' of normal variability. In the 1980s and 1990s, people were still arguing about whether the warming over the 20th century was significant, but with another 20 years of record-breaking temperatures, that has been very clearly shown. Third, our understanding of the processes in the climate that affect sensitivity — clouds, water vapor, aerosols, etc. — has improved immensely with the development of satellite remote sensing, and every decade we are producing better and more useful information. But as these lines of evidence have matured, the need to come up with new methods to tie them all together coherently has become acute — and that was the impetus for this roughly 4-year effort."

Q. What types of evidence did the team consider in reaching its conclusions? Where do the lines of evidence agree and disagree most substantially?
Schmidt: "There are three main sources of information: changes since the late 19th century that have been measured in real time, our understanding of physical processes (particularly clouds), and new and more complete information from periods in the paleoclimate record (the geological past) where the planet was significantly cooler or warmer than today. All of the lines of evidence are mostly commensurate, but specific issues mean that the recent record isn't good at constraining the high-end values because of the imprecise role of aerosols, and paleoclimate change is less able to constrain the low end because of the uncertain nature of that data. Together, however, we can mostly rule those tails out."
Q. What were a few of the most significant findings for each of the three lines of evidence studied (feedback processes, the historical warming record, and paleoclimate records)?
Marvel: "For a long time, many people thought that sensitivity estimates derived from paleoclimate — the far past — were incompatible with estimates derived from more recent observations. But there's a difference between a past climate state in which the planet has reached an equilibrium — a 'new normal' — and our current climate, where things are very much in flux and continuing to change. There is some uncertainty in just how different the future will look from what we're experiencing now — it's possible we're moving into a new world for which we don't have a recent analogue. And when we take that uncertainty into account in a rigorous way, we find that the far past and the near future may not be telling us such different things after all."
Schmidt: "What was interesting was that by starting off with a view of climate sensitivity that was a little more sophisticated than people had used previously, we found that there was more coherence among the different lines of evidence than others had found, and since the information we are using really is very independent, that allowed us to narrow the uncertainty."
Q. Your team used a "Bayesian approach" to calculate your estimated range of climate sensitivity. In layman's terms, what is that?
Schmidt: "A Bayesian approach is really just a mathematical representation of how we do science in general. We have an initial hypothesis, we get some evidence that may or may not support it, and then we update our understanding based on that evidence. And then we do it again (and again, and again, etc.). Over time, and as more evidence accumulates, we hopefully hone in on the most correct answer. Using Bayesian methods allowed us to pull together disparate threads of evidence in a coherent way — allowing for different degrees of confidence in each of the lines of evidence. What is great is that in the future, as more evidence is discovered, we can continue the process and update our understanding again."
Q. What role did global climate models play in the team's findings?
Marvel: "Complex climate models are useful tools (see here for a good overview). But in this paper, we relied largely on observations: satellite and ground-based measurements of recent trends, paleoclimate datasets, and basic physical principles."
Schmidt: "Climate models help frame the questions we are asking and can be examined to see how climate patterns in space and time connect to things we can directly observe. But we know that climate models have a lot of uncertainty related (for instance) to cloud processes, and so we didn't use the...

In her latest book, Naomi Klein continues the cause of her career: arguing that a fundamentally new economic system is the only way to save society and the planet.

On Fire: The (Burning) Case for the Green New Deal opens with the image of schoolchildren going on strike for the climate, following the Swedish teenager Greta Thunberg, whose blunt challenges to political leaders around the world have rocketed her to global fame. It's an opening that reflects the monumental shift in the conversation around climate change over the course of the past year, advanced by young people in particular — from Thunberg's School Strikes for Climate to the Sunrise Movement's sit-ins in the US— and the emergence of the Green New Deal (GND) as a central demand.
Yet rather than digging into the events of the past year or arguing for a particular set of policies or programs, On Fire makes the case for the Green New Deal by tracing the evolution of climate politics over the past decade. Setting the recent surge of GND momentum against ten years of Klein's reporting — on the BP oil spill, the Keystone XL and Dakota Access pipeline protests, and wildfires in British Columbia — serves as a reminder of how much it has taken to get to this point.
In 2011, Klein was protesting the Keystone XL pipeline at the White House. In October 2013, she wrote about the need for "political revolution" in response to increasingly dire climate science, and chronicled its opening flares — people taking action to stop fracking in England, disrupt oil drilling in Russian waters, and sue tar sands companies for violating indigenous sovereignty. Disruptive action, that is, didn't start with Sunrise or Extinction Rebellion. Even the pieces that narrate her own alarming encounters with a warming world, like her unsettling account of two weeks spent anxiously vacationing on the British Columbia coast in 2017 while forests to the north burned, always turn in the end to politics — a refreshing change from the proliferating genre of anguished meditations on climate doom.
Amid the many authors publishing books on climate change in recent years, Klein remains the most prominent analyst of climate in relation to capitalism; this collection also serves as a reminder of how long she has been making that case.
Her first major essay on climate change, 2011's "Capitalism vs. the Climate," argued that it is not a coincidence that many on the Right deny climate change: conservatives have correctly realised that climate change poses a severe challenge to the principles of capitalism.
For many conservatives, then, climate change appeared to be little more than a "Trojan horse designed to abolish capitalism and replace it with some form of eco-socialism." Klein argues that conservative deniers were perfectly reasonable: action on climate change will require public investment, wealth redistribution, strict regulation, and a host of other things that conservatives oppose.
She reiterates a similar argument at the start of On Fire, this time with reference not to conservative think tanks but "the specter of ecofascism." Klein argues that "climate disruption demands a reckoning on the terrain most repellent to conservative minds: wealth redistribution, resource sharing, and reparations." Instead of denying climate change outright, the Right will now use it as a justification for hardening borders.
An essay on Edward Said, Palestine, and Israel's "green colonialism" illustrates Klein's worry more extensively. Israel's "separation barrier" in the West Bank, she points out, is not only comparable to right-wing chants to "build the wall" — in fact, the existence of the former has fuelled the latter.
Paradoxically, the Right is internationalist in its inspirations, if nationalist in its policies. Yet what goes mostly unaddressed is the ongoing transformation of the Right, as the capitalist "globalists" indicted in the original "Capitalism vs. the Climate" essay increasingly come under attack from right populists. The former get relatively short shrift in this book, but they remain formidable opponents. As the age of Exxon-funded climate denial comes to an end, what new tack will corporations seeking to derail a Green New Deal take, and how will they relate to their erstwhile allies of the nationalist right? How will the right populists like Missouri senator Josh Hawley relate to business conservatives like Utah senator Mitt Romney? What challenges, and opportunities, does this realignment present for the Left?
On that note, we could today make a similar observation from the opposite direction. It is not a coincidence that the strongest and most compelling frameworks for tackling climate change are coming from the Left: Ocasio-Cortez, of course; but also Bernie Sanders, whose climate plan recently won him an A rating from Sunrise. What is often described as Klein's "prescience" is better understood as her perspective: by following the development of global capitalism and the movements of the international left for the past two decades, Klein has been able to see emerging phenomena more clearly than many mainstream political observers.
As Daniel Denvir recently observed about the 1999 World Trade Organisation protests, "in Seattle, we saw Green New Deal politics in rudimentary form: that labour and environment united was the only way forward." We shouldn't be surprised that our best chronicler of that movement is now at the forefront of the Green New Deal.
In fact, Klein was making the case for the Green New Deal eight years ago: in the wake of Occupy, she argued, "There is a wide-open opportunity to seize the terrain from the right." That, she argued, would mean "making a persuasive case that the real solutions to the climate crisis are also our best hope of building a fairer and much more enlightened economic system — one that closes deep inequalities, strengthens and transforms the public sphere, generates plentiful, dignified work, and radically reins in corporate power." In essays throughout the book that span years of writing, Klein repeatedly argues for "integrated solutions" that "radically bring down emissions while tackling structural inequality and making life tangibly better for the majority."
Yet for the most part, the writing collected in this book focuses less on those who might benefit from the likes of a Green New Deal than on those disproportionately impacted by climate change. In one essay, Klein uses Edward Said's concept of "othering" to describe how and why certain people and communities come to bear the most significant environmental burdens: as she argues, the "Faustian pact" of industrialism was that "the heaviest risks would be outsourced, offloaded, onto the other."
Today, she claims, "our fossil fuel-powered economy requires sacrifice zones." Though the rhetoric is different, such arguments have a long lineage in socialist thought. In the nineteenth century, Friedrich Engels chronicled horrific air and water pollution as part of the condition of the working class in Manchester; socialists today would do well to follow him in seeing environmental justice organising as an expression of class struggle. The sacrifice zone is a useful concept for connecting the economic language of "externalities" — the pollution and waste that come along with production — to the moral and political critiques made by environmental justice activists. Capitalism happens not just in the factory but in the atmosphere; class struggle, too, is present not only in workplace struggles but in fights over who will bear the costs of capitalist production.
But it is true that connecting those struggles over who pays the costs of our current system to struggles over who might benefit from the future world we hope to build can be challenging. The central movement animating Klein's This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. the Climate was Blockadia, what she described as a "roving transnational conflict zone" of people determined to stop new fossil-fuel extraction projects. At the time, my most significant critique of This Changes Everything was the seeming mismatch between the strategies and sites of this political movement, which was oriented toward local struggles and stopping environmental harms, and the vision of a better future she laid out at the start of the book, which would require a mass movement oriented toward securing social goods.
But Klein, and climate movements, kept moving.
She was extensively involved in the collection of labour, environmental, and indigenous groups that authored the Leap Manifesto in Canada in 2016, a short but powerful statement outlining a new direction for the Canadian left, an exciting new vision of energy democracy, low-carbon care work, and decarbonisation for the public good.
But as Klein details in "The Leap Years," a 2016 lecture, it was under siege from the start: politicians fixated on its call for an end to fossil-fuel infrastructure went beyond the usual charges of environmental job-killing to decry it as an "existential threat" and a "philosophy of economic nihilism." Klein is admirably forthcoming about these difficulties. And set in the context of a decade of struggle, the manifesto appears not as a failed project, but as an experiment from which we can and should learn lessons.
For Klein, many of these lessons come in the form of meditations on the values underpinning modern Western life. The problem goes deeper than we tend to think, she argues. For example, Klein analyses the Leap Manifesto's failures as stemming from the conditions of Canada's origins: when European settlers arrived in the New World, it appeared to be a land of limitless bounty — oceans thick with fish, skies clouded by birds, seemingly endless forests of giant trees. Treating this land as if it was inexhaustible, settlers — more specifically, commercial enterprises like the Hudson Bay fur trading company — quickly exhausted it.
Her 2010 piece on the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, "A Hole in the World," similarly sees BP's boasts of the "deepest well ever drilled" as an extension of the drive to dominate nature that began with the scientific revolution in the sixteenth century. The spill and BP's failure to contain it thus represented a "crash course in deep ecology" — a reminder that the earth is still alive and uncontrollable.
My concern is that Klein may be too thorough in her diagnosis. Although she is surely right to trace these deeper currents, the leap across centuries in the space of a few pages can have a disorienting effect, and perhaps a demobilising one. It suggests that the task before us is truly so tremendous — changing everything, beginning with our very understanding of the world — that it can feel impossible to undertake in the span of a few years. If a political project like the Leap Manifesto was doomed by its collision with the ideology that underpinned Canada's origins, why would the Green New Deal be any more likely to succeed?
At the same time, Klein sometimes seems to suggest that once we change our view of the world — often described in terms of "narratives" or "stories" — changes in the way we live will follow. In order to change our policies, Klein argued in "Capitalism vs. the Climate," we first must "confront the underlying values of rampant greed and individualism that created the economic crisis," which in turn means "embodying, in highly visible ways, radically different ways of treating one another and relating to the natural world."
To say this, Klein argues, is not a matter of "lifestyle" — about what goods we prefer to buy or what we like to eat. (Across essays, Klein forcefully, and refreshingly, rejects the idea of consumer choice as a form of politics, insisting that politics requires collective action.) Yet she has a tendency to describe features of capitalism in terms of culture: we suffer from "a culture of endless taking," "a culture of grabbing and going," a "cult of shopping," and so on.
Interrogating our inherited stories, narratives, mythologies, and values — our ideologies, say — is surely necessary. But new stories alone will not get us out of this mess. I would suggest a different order of operations: we do need to change many aspects of our relationships to the natural world and to one another. But we should not expect those changes to come in advance of changes in the material conditions of our lives, however imperative they may be.
This, in fact, is the premise of the Green New Deal: that we tackle climate change not by changing our values in the abstract, but by changing the material realities that shape them. (I think Klein would agree.) Only when green jobs are an option can people give up environmentally destructive work; only when public transportation is quick, reliable, and affordable can you dispense with a car; only when you can afford to retrofit your home will you do so.
And while the school strikes have done a lot to change the discourse, the fact remains that we have a long way to go in changing those material realities. Thunberg, blunt as ever, recently declared that the strikes have "achieved nothing," since carbon emissions have yet to budge. Klein's book is a helpful reminder that it is too soon to tell: movements build over the course not of months but years. Yet Thunberg's impatience is a helpful spur to take a hard look at our prospects, at where the climate left is building power and where we expect more to come from.
School strikes are stirring, but politicians' laudatory words for the courageous young people of the world will not be matched with action until real consequences seem likely to result. That will mean bringing other forms of power to bear: from the tenants' movements driving forward Green New Deal legislation, to the growing force of canvassers and organisers who have catapulted long-shot candidates to victories, to the power of traditional strikes to withhold labour.
I wish that such movements and their potential to deliver a Green New Deal had gotten more time in this book. But I have no doubt that Klein will be reporting on them — and organising with them — every step of the way.

Everyone smiled bitterly with invisible tears in their eyes.

They now regretted it.
Funny enough, on the last day for dropping courses, many of them didn't bother to do so as their pride got the best out of them.
No, it wasn't entirely pride.
It was just that back in their empires, they did a lot of things, running everywhere.
So many felt like they could handle whatever came their way.
Plus, many took in a lot of courses now, so that next semester, they should be somewhat free.
Looking at the printing curriculum given to them on orientation day, they knew how many courses they had to take each year.

Additionally, they could tell which were co-requisites and prerequisites.
They had everything planned out.
Why?
Because they wanted to sign up for work-study next semester.
So they wanted a somewhat free school time for them.
One should know that at present, secretaries amd some of the lecturers had already begun jotting and noting everything down from the weather record books brought in by everyone.
A single city or town could produce up to 3 lenders a month.
Why?
Because they wrote down every slight weather change that took place each 10 minutes
How the clouds & stars looked like, and even how the wind felt like through the primitive wind vane movements... everything was recorded.
Even landslides, scorching heat and so on were recorded based on particular unique stones etc.
Anyway, for this semester, the secretaries and lecturers did their best to extrapolate the data and note them down correctly.
And from next semester, after the students had basic knowledge of weather, then, they would begin charting, graphing and estimating certain things.
Of course, by the end of the semester, these secretaries might've only gone through at most 6 months from the past.
With every city and town in the various empires bringing records and books, they couldn't do more than that.
To make matters worse, every year had over 40 books. 
The year 800, the year 900, the year 1010… all had over 40 book records.
Of course, the students only brought at most 6 months of records from a single year when they came to Baymard.
They randomly picked out a year and brought in 6 months of work for that period.

Anyway, once the students have acquired more knowledge, they'll start graphing everything, noting the constant factors they saw, and so on.
Take for example, wind patterns.
Because of the Rotation of the world and certain factors, the wind directions typically always fell in the same estimated range.
Be it the prevailing winds from the northern hemisphere and so on... All these were essential for flying planes.
They needed to predict and extrapolate all they knew from each region to better understand the weather.
The academy even had its own hot air balloons to go up in the air for taking temperatures and running some tests while in the Academy.
And next semester... No! It was even earlier than next semester.
This December, the students would team up with the lectures and work nonstop out on the field.
And when the next semester began in January, they would work part-time, earn their salaries while studying.
So many felt like oiling more courses for this semester and keeping the next semester very open.
But who would've known that their plan would backfire?
There was just so much to do and so much to study for the upcoming midterms, as well as assignments.
So they felt momentarily overwhelmed.
And now, Landon was rubbing it in by giving them bi-weekly quizzes.
Wasn't this too much?
Of course, they only felt like this because of the midterms.
After that, they would eventually relax again.
But at this money, they felt like beating their former selves for taking so many credits.
Dammit!

Landon wrote the class code and name on the board before facing everyone again.

Many furrowed their brows deep in thought as they tried their best to remember what exactly climate was.
During one of their other courses called <ATM S 101: Weather>, it was briefly mentioned.
But no importance seemed to have been placed on it during the class.
Why was weather different from climate?
What made it so distinct?
They crossed their arms and searched their brains so hard. But couldn't come up with anything.
Of course, some came up with different theories and raised their hands.

Now, we've said that weather is the condition of air or atmosphere around our planet.
But the thing is, even though we only have one atmosphere around Hertfilia, the weather isn't the same all over the world.
There are many different factors that can change the atmosphere in particular regions.
And together, they determine what the weather is like from one place to the next.
These factors include temperature, wind speed & direction, humidity, and so much more.
But, when one is talking about the overall weather pattern from specific parts of the world, then you're talking about the area's climate.
Weather is the minute-to-minute changes in the atmosphere.
While Climate, on the other hand, is what the weather is like over a long period of time in a specific area.
The weather is constantly changing from rainy, sunny, cloudy and so on.
But Climate is different.
Im short, while the weather can change in a few hours, a region's climate takes hundreds and thousands of years to change or shift even by an inch.
On this day around the year 800, it was probably sunny with a few cold winds.
And on this day around the year 900, the weather was probably the same.
That climate.
Factors like altitude, sea currents, landscapes and so on, influence the element like temperatures, precipitation and so on... Which in turn make the climate from each region carry from one place to another.
And that... is what we need to track, determining a weather pattern for each region.
We need to determine the range of days when snow would fall in each region or when the rain would start falling, and so on.
Here in Baymard, snow started around 17~30 of December.
That was its range.
It always fell in that range.
Every area has its own unique weather pattern that has stayed constant for thousands and thousands of years, only moving ever so slightly.
And in a sense, that's what climate is.
So, do you all understand the difference between weather and climate now?"
~Ohhhhh.
Everyone opened their mouths in understanding while nodding excitedly.
Yes, they did.
They now knew the difference between the two.

"Hey guys did you see these viral videos?" Elle announced at her classmates and showed the videos to them. The girls went to her and make their way to watch the video. The first is the video about a guy who is a real-time gold digger. The second one is about Greg Anderson. The famous actor who is constantly declining his admirers. They are interviewed in a separate video. They only said one thing in common, that they met a girl and that girl made them a fool. They said that she is a cute blonde girl with blue eyes. She seems innocent but will make your life rotate differently. The guys are now the talk of the town. 

Angela is also watching the video and is now talking to her classmates. She shares her criticism and also listens to them. Devi on the hand, is leaning backwards to her chair with a pen on her philtrum. She doesn’t give a damn about gossips. 

The commotion stops when Miss Eva Hearth enters the class. Everyone went back to their seats. 

‘’Good morning students.’’ 

‘’Good morning Miss.’’ 

Miss Eva looked at her students and started leaning on the teacher’s desk. 

‘’Are you aware of the happenings in your surroundings? Are you educated enough to help and fight the unwanted change we’re facing?’’ She asked and folded her arms to her chest. Miss Eva has a brunette hair that is styled in a sock bun. No one can guess her real age because of her radiant skin and a perfectly straight posture. She is a woman of discipline and independence, an empowered woman. 

The class 1-A wonders and amazed how their teacher educates. Miss Eva raised her eyebrow waiting for their answer and the whole class said ‘yes’. Eva Hearth will tackle about the long-time problem of climate change. 

‘’Very well then, if you are really educated and aware can you tell me how the change of climate affects your life?’’ 

The class went silent for a moment and the giggly Shane Smith breaks it by raising her hand. Miss Eva nods her head signals her to stand up. ‘’My summer now is not that amazing when I was a kid. Because the temperature had rise and it is getting hotter and hotter. So now, instead of kids playing outside they will just stay inside and turn on their AC.’’ Shane is really sad and affected by that horrific truth. It is really depressing for this kid’s generation not to be able to enjoy the warm and lovely sun outside. 

‘’What a miserable reality. . . Thank you for sharing that. Who else?’’ 

Angela was pinning down Charles’ arm but Charles still managed to raised it. Angela slaps her forehead in dismay. The whole class try their best to hold their laugh because they are 100% sure that Charles is up to something. 

‘’Yes, Mr. Cortez?’’ 

Charles clears his throat and looks at his classmates and wink at Angela. She just simply shrugged her head and looked straight at the whiteboard. ‘’So, when I was young and cute,’’ the whole class laugh. Charles shushes them by putting his index finger to his mouth. ‘As I was saying, I’m the cutest child alive back then and I really love to play on paddles. I’ll do whatever I want from them like roll or jump.’’ His classmates laugh again at him. Charles is so persistent that he is the ‘cutest kid’. He continued, ‘’Then one day, it rains heavily and I was really happy about that because there will be a lot of paddles. But it didn’t happen coz the rain starts to get stronger and the water starts to rise, I thought it would enter our house! After that horrible incident, I am ready to get wet outside but what surprised me is a big flood gosh! The water can reach the thigh of an adult and I’m a CUTE LITTLE CHILD back then, so it is a no-no for me. Because I’m a genius kid, I searched on the internet why floods happen. . . and it’s the freakin’ CLIMATE CHANGE!’’ Charles exclaimed then sat down and put his arm in Angela’s shoulder. But Angela smacks it and remove his arm. What a cute couple they are. . . 

‘’Thanks for sharing Charles, well that was actually true that floods are caused by this climate change. If there’s a heavy rainfall, rapid snowmelt, or a storm surge from a tropical cyclone there will be a flood. I think we will have everyone in the class to tell their insights, how about that? Starting from this line.’’ Miss Hearth point out the first row on the left column. Elle stand up wearing a nervous smile. She says that she and her father love to go to Misamis Oriental to watch the hatchlings of the hawkbill sea turtles. But this year’s vacation is not that quite fun because a lot of the turtle died because of the rising of sea levels. 

‘’Yup! The main effect of climate change is the rising of sea levels. Maybe one billion years from now earth will be nothing but water.’’ The whole class gasped and Eva Hearth was satisfied by their reaction. So, the sharing goes on and on. Carlo said that they have a little harvest from the past years because of extreme heat. The sharing reached the back seats and it is Devi and friends turn. It is now Frank’s turn, ‘’Well, climate change has a huge impact on us and also to me, of course.’’ He said then sighs. He takes a breath and continued, ‘’I can say that a really heavy and strong typhoon affected me, because I’m supposed to say goodbye to my friend and it didn’t happen coz of that rain. She thinks now that I’m a liar and an irresponsible person and refuse to talks to me.’’ By that the room went silent and sympathize with Frank. 

Miss Eva went to him and pat his shoulders, ‘’We really appreciate that Frank, its kinda sad. . . losing a friend, isn’t it? So, now class who is the one to blame to? The sun for giving so much energy, the ozone layer for having a hole in it and it is getting bigger just the size of a soccer field?’’ Miss Hearth asked in a sarcastic loud tone. She walked in front of the class and writes on the whiteboard. She drew an evil face emoji, write an equal sign, and then write a capital five-letter word ‘HUMANS’. ‘’We are the one to blame for this phenomenon! All of your experiences that you tell a while ago is OUR fault. The regret, the emotions that you feel is nothing and we’re near to dying. How you will save yourself from this tragedy? Are you ready to be buried alive?’’ 

The sleepy girl in the class suddenly has her head lift up looking at her teacher. That’s why my mother like her, she thought

A two-meter tall battlesuit invented by a Greek named Nik Theodorotis, The Fuming Minotaur was designed to be a close combat battlesuit. As it's name implied, the battlesuit resembles the famous Greek mythical creature. The body was wholly human, while the head of the battlesuit was shaped like a bull with its two horns serving as exhaust vents. Despite the mythical theme, The Minotaur was no joke. Theodorotis didn't designed the battlesuit to be a curiosity, but to be a fully functioning battlesuit.
Almost the whole of the battlesuit was heavily armored and the strength of the operator was also enhanced by the battlesuit. Enclosed in the heavily armored Fuming Minotaur, the operator was supposed to charge at the opponent, ignoring the incoming fire to get into close combat range. Heavier armor equals less speed, so Theodorotis installed several boosters on the legs of the Minotaur to give the battlesuit a much-needed short burst of speed to get to the enemy quicker. The battlesuit also came equipped with a long battleaxe that could cut through almost anything if the operator can apply enough strength and force behind it.
The idea and design of The Fuming Minotaur was both simple and effective. The Fuming Minotaur can take a punch, and dish it out. In its day, The Minotaur was considered a premier battlesuit. Theodorotis just unknowingly made one big error.
The Minotaur runs on Fossil Fuel Technology.
A fossil fuel was a fuel formed by decomposition of buried dead organisms. These usually include petroleum, coal, and natural gas. When the technology was first discovered, Fossil Fuels Technology wasn't considered to be anything great. Fuel could be burned to produce significant amounts of energy per unit mass, but coal wasn't considered to be a much better source of energy than Steam or Clockwork, so the technology didn't catch on. That changed after improvement of the technology based around the used of petroleum. The technology came to its own with the commercial exploitation of petroleum about a hundred and fifty years ago, and from there, it was a small step to natural gas and heavy crude oil.
However, before Fossil Fuel Technology could fully replace Clockwork Technology, the momentum of the technology came to a grinding halt when it was discovered that the burning of fossil fuel caused harm to the environment. A new type of science had come into being that studied the effects of the environment and these climate scientists provided proof that the use of fossil fuel was harming the earth.
For a time, this was controversial as no one had heard of things like climate change and ozone layer before, but you can't argue with science. Soon everyone realized the harm Fossil Fuel Technology was doing to the environment and there was some talk of banning the technology altogether. However, defenders of the technology pointed out that Stream Technology also harm the environment, though at a lesser degree, so if you ban Fossil Fuel Technology, you need to ban Steam Technology too.
It was a stupid argument, but it worked. Fossil Fuel Technology was saved from a ban, and instead more money and resources were given to climate scientists to try and find a way to reverse the effects of climate change. Ironically, the companies most involved in the Fossil Fuel Industry, dismissively called Big Oil, were the biggest contributors as they seek to lift the cloud over their industry. Within twenty years, climate scientists managed to do that but by then, it was too late for Fossil Fuel Technology. Almost everyone had abandoned it to return to Clockwork.
Nowadays, Fossil Fuel Technology was used mainly as an example on the folly of science. Most people do not used it, and only anarchists and historians remember the promise it once held. Even among the latter, the technology has a reputation of being dirty, polluting, and destructive. In fact, Fossil Fuel Technology has such a bad reputation that it is more commonly known as 'Dieselpunk'. A technology no upstanding citizens would consider using. The fact that Dieselpunk was closely associated with World War I, which started only a few years after the technology got popular, was another minus for the public.
This reputation was very undeserved.
The simple fact was that climate science has advanced to such a stage that any harm done by the technology could be easily undone by climate science. What is replacing the ozone layer when climate scientists were already thinking of ways to terraform Mars and Venus? Yes; the advance of climate science, the field of science that destroyed the promise of Fossil Fuel Technology, has made the technology safe to use once more. The irony was not lost on me as I purchased the battlesuit from the Dive.
Purchases in the Dive required Dive Points, which was the digital currency of the Dive platform. The price for The Fuming Minotaur was a little expensive for a Grade One battlesuit, but I was so flush with credits right now, the price didn't really mean much to me. After purchasing the battlesuit, my next problem was how to make my variant of The Fuming Minotaur viable.
The System only said that I need to design six battlesuits within six months. It didn't say anything about the quality of my work, or how many of the battlesuits must be sold, but I had my personal goals to meet. It may not matter to the System, but I want to release quality work, and I also want people to use my battlesuits. I have no wish to release designs that no one will look at, much less used. Releasing battlesuit designs just for the sake of releasing them was just wrong. I began to work.
The easiest way to make my variant viable was to change the battlesuit to another type of technology. As soon as the thought arose, I suppressed it immediately. The Fuming Minotaur is a battlesuit that was tied to Fossil Fuel Technology, and I had no wish to change that. Not only was there history to think of, changing the whole technology the battlesuit was being run on takes a lot of work. I was on a dateline.
