The beginning

I have always been different from those around me; it was something my parents would brag about every second they got. I was way smarter than the average person, I rarely ever made a mistake, and everything I did was more than perfect.

However, only I knew that I hosted an entire lifetime's worth of memories in my mind.

My so-called 'perfection' brought me all I ever wanted—unimaginable wealth and finally a woman that I could go back home to. Maria made my life perfect, and then Daisy came along, making it even more perfect. But as always, with long-lasting order comes chaos.

K-day, the day everything was taken from me. I never expected it nor was it even a sort of event I expected from such a universe. The giant beast that people later named 'The Trespasser' came through one of the accursed portals under the sea.

It's funny how you can't hate nature. I know now that these beasts aren't born naturally, but they possess the same instincts as the wild animals back on Earth. The event took my daughter and wife away, but it's not the Kaiju I'm after; it's their creators, and I will ensure I send all of them to hell.

[Sir!!] a robotic voice called out, waking me from my sleep.

"Yes... yes, what is it?" I asked as I woke up.

[The model is complete and the experiment successful,] the voice called out.

"That means... give me the details. Did you ensure that nothing was wrong with it?" I asked as I jumped out of bed in my underwear and immediately ran out of the bedroom.

[I did, sir; however, a simulated model may not provide as accurate results as you want.]

"You want us to go into trials... that could be incredibly dangerous."

[As you say, 'that is the very definition of science.' So should I begin the tests?] the voice asked.

"It seems I have been too much of a bad influence on you, Atlas, but yes, you can begin tests. However, you know the standard procedure before any tests."

[Naturally, even a fully grown Kaiju can't withstand temperatures as high as two million degrees.]

"Excellent, I'll be joining you soon," I said as I picked up a file filled with newly printed papers about the model Atlas had created, then went to freshen up for the day.

Two good years since K-day and, truthfully speaking, I think I am at my lowest ever. Maria would laugh her head off if she heard about my current situation.

And no, I didn't suddenly become poor; Atlas Industries is still a major pillar in the medical world, and I am still the 15th richest man alive.

Well, my current location should state that clearly, after all, no one willingly decides to live in a desert.

I would say that, like Batman, I have channeled my sorrow and wealth into turning myself into a weapon to fight against the ones who put me in such a situation in the first place.

After the Trespasser, more Kaiju have attacked, and the only response to their attacks has been a nuclear response.

Late last year, an organization or arm of the United Nations was formed to combat the Kaiju, and early this year, a machine that they called a Jaeger was introduced.

I do not know if it was just me or the fact that I housed memories from another world altogether, but the Jaegers, though a cool idea, were deemed a very stupid solution. Well... most of that thought came from the fact that I was not drift compatible.

The Jaegers cost a whole lot of resources and money to create, which meant that each Jaeger had a lot of people riding on it. But not only that, it also took a lot of time to manufacture.

They were effective, but when compared to the manufacturing ability of whoever produced these Kaiju, it was nothing.

There could be about four Kaiju on Earth, but only two functioning Jaegers would be available, which meant that the remaining two were free to do as they liked.

The Jaegers were outnumbered hilariously, and above all, pilots for the Jaegers were hard to come by.

To be drift compatible, you needed to be capable of meeting certain criteria, and above that, you also needed to have a relationship with another person who was also drift compatible.

This meant that most of the current pilots were either family, best friends, or lovers. The relationship aspect wasn't needed, but God knows it helped greatly.

"So, what do we have now, Atlas?" I asked as I entered my lab, which was filled with various Kaiju parts that I have salvaged from all over the world.

The lab had all the equipment one could find in a state-of-the-art laboratory. My experiments were borderline unethical; hence why I am in the desert.

Knowing that the Kaiju—all of them—were simply clones of one made me begin a search for maybe a virus, bacteria, or anything that would kill them upon contact.

Turns out that the core genes used in a Kaiju are highly vulnerable to oxygen. I know it is surprising, which meant that assuming the Kaiju were created using genes from the races that created them, then oxygen—one of the most abundant elements on Earth—was highly toxic to them.

However, that doesn't help us in any way since I don't know what sort of atmosphere they naturally lived in.

Throwing a can of oxygen in there wouldn't kill an entire race—maybe a few but definitely not all. Above all, the creators in question somehow made the Kaiju immune to said element.

I have tested every drug, virus, and bacteria against Kaiju DNA, but it simply killed them all and continued to live on.

The Kaiju had no biological enemy on this planet at least. Hence, my latest project.

[The clone has been prepared. Should I begin the transplant?] Atlas asked as I approached a massive room that was blocked off entirely by a very thick sheet of glass.

Behind the glass, or inside the room, a naked person could be seen lying face down on a surgical bed and surrounded by various machine arms and other equipment.

Like I said, my experiments were borderline unethical. Despite the fact that the technology in this world has gone way beyond the one in my memory.58
