Sleep isn't familiar to him. His mind just cannot wander off and have a calm night of blissfully sleeping. He's a problem for his division and mostly the 4th division where he makes daily visits. However, he's known for his analytical eye which is sought after from several divisions in the Gotei 13. Even those with ill-intent.
"Another headache, Yasushi."
Why was I in a meeting with the Head captain? I didn't think my captain would go this far even after I did all his paperwork which he was behind on. I guess "bribery" could only get you so far. I knew I was going to be reprimanded soon enough but this wasn't what I expected.
I stuck out like a sore thumb in this room. My eye-catching white hair compared to the head-captains bald head. My baggy and tired eyes compared to the head captains wise and experienced eyes. My smooth skin compared to the head captains battle-worn and wrinkled skin
My daily visits to squad 4 and discussions with my captain were helping but I could never get to sleep.
The two of us were sitting on the floor in the middle of a quite large room. I guessed that it was a room used for a meeting of such or for the head-captains tea gathering. For a man with such a strict demeanour, his tastes were interesting, to say the least.
"It's nothing serious, Captain." I began
"Well my report from Captain Unohana says otherwise. Continous head-aches for 10 years and a lack of sleep. Your actions have been deemed serious enough to come directly towards me." The head captain answered.
"I wouldn't call it a lack of, Head captain. I'd describe it as an incapability." I answered.
"Hoh? Incapability? Explain yourself."
"A lack of sleep would imply that I get to sleep every once in a while. I however don't get any sleep. It's simple."
"Don't sound so proud."
"I don't see why it's much of a problem. Our division is reporting double the amount of productivity and pardon if I sound like I'm bragging but mostly because of me." It was true.
"I'll allow it this one time. Explain yourself however you see fit."
"Our captain, as you'd know the best, is eccentric, to say the least. He's not one for sitting around a desk or writing reports. That's where I come in. I do the day to day managing of the division. Because of my 24 hour efficiency, we get more work done than any other division. We were the first to hand in the report of those hollows in the Rukongai, weren't we?"
I was the main manager of paperwork in my division, which was quite lazy in it's handling of work.
"You raise a fair argument. Shunsui is lucky to have someone like you in his division. You are dismissed for today. Tell Shunsui to act as a captain. Tell him to act with dignity."
I stood up and bowed respectfully to the strongest shinigami in centuries. "Of course head captain. An order is irrefutable."
--------------------
"How was it, Yasushi." My probably drunk captain asked.
"It went well. The head captain as usual is a man who listens to reason and logic above all else. I am the brain this division needs." I said.
"So cruel Yasushi, but what would I do without you. Your analytical and fighting skills are a standout in this division, I was lucky to pick you up when you transferred from the 6th division." Shunsui said while sitting on his sit.
"Those guys were all boring. All they cared about is the rules and regulations, but what they didn't know is that rules don't exist on the battlefield." I said while snapping a book shut.
"Well said. It's the first thing you learn in the Shin'ō academy. 'Do not seek aesthetic in battle.' Taking manners into a battle is a rookie mistake."
"Speaking of Rookie mistakes it's time for our daily training captain. Should I gather the division?"
"No, how about we have a personal one, just me and you. A captain and his 3rd seat."
----------------
I ducked to dodge the slice that was coming. I adjusted my body weight so that I was directly underneath my captain's sword giving me a perfect opportunity to strike. I placed my hand and put out my index finger right in front of his stomach and gathered the reiatsu to my finger.
"Hado 4: Byakurai."
A bolt of lightning erupted out of my fingers, I could tell it wouldn't work a captain as strong as my own wouldn't let himself get hit by a cheap attack like that.
The split second that he went to use his shorter sword to dissipate the attack, I stepped back and used a Shunpo to get behind him and tried to slice down with my Zanpakuto.
It was a training session where I was told to attack with the intent to kill, so I did.
However, my Captain was there to stop the blow.
"As expected of a captain."
I jumped back and flowed the Reiatsu of my left hand, which was my dominant hand into my zanpakuto, and another flow of reiatsu into my arm and released two separate kido without the incantation of either.
However, before I released it I noticed that my captain wasn't in his original spot. I took my zanpakuto and stabbed into the ground. I took my self and balanced my self on top of it.
Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed my captain appearing at exactly an angle of 34 degrees to the north.
I released the reiatsu built in my sword however unlike a regular Okasen which only released the attack in a singular arc, I had managed to twist so it was an attack that covered all directions. A simple modification made a simple kido spell a frightening one.
That is where I prided my self the most, taking something and making it stronger in such simple nuanced ways.
The attack spread itself out away from me and it was now my captains turn to make a move.
He was surprised at first by the attack but managed to regain his footing and avoided the Okasen which was coming at him and at unthinkable speeds.
Once he avoided the attack I jumped off the tip of my katana and held it in my hand.
However, before I could move I felt something grab around my leg.
It was checkmate.
I didn't need to look to know what it was.
"You used a hainawa and sent it through the ground. You used the moment I got off to strike. Quite smart."
"Correct as usual. You were trying extra-hard this session so I decided to end it before you did something crazy again."
The two of us began to walk back to the captain's office after resting for a second.
"Oh yeah, I have a job for you. The head captain brought it up in the captains meeting and I offered you up."
"It better not be something stupid. I don't want to sit through more of Captain Unohana's calligraphy lessons again." I said with a slight distaste.
"No it's nothing like that, I think you'll enjoy yourself this time."
When was the last time I actually enjoyed work. It seemed to be the same things every day. Hopefully, this new thing could get a new thing to enjoy other than reading the texts of the human world.
Hopefully.
