Chapter thirteen; The end of the world

Roderwall is a small town. A town where people lived together and related closely with each other.

Roderwall isn't like the city, though there were some disadvantages, yet they enjoyed more benefits than the city life.

And the people lived in harmony and unity. Disputes were resolved easily and no one held grudges against each other.

William came back to Roderwall after he retired from the army. His only child, Jessica Walton was forced to stay with them. She had no life in the city anyways.

She would only miss someone and that was Jake. Jake was a close friend to Jessica. They've been together since they've known each other. And he aided her in her training.

Every night, he would train her in martial arts unknown to anyone. He was commiting a serious crime against the General but it was all Jessica ever wanted. What she couldn't get easier but have always desired.

Jessica has always wanted to be a soldier but her father wouldn't allow her.

After three years of battling a serious unknown ailment that almost claimed Jessica's life, she found herself wanting to go to the army. But her mom would never allow it.

Even in Roderwall, everything was made available to Jessica. She wasn't meant to do anything stressful. But that wasn't what she wanted.

Stanley and Marcus moved nearer to the Walton's. Williams and Jenny were in the garden when they were escorted in by the security guards.

"Good afternoon sir," they chorused with a smile.

William responded with a smile too," How may I help you?"

"We are friends of your daughter. And we wanted to see if she's in," Marcus was the one that spoke.

Jenny shook her head slightly, "I'm sorry but she went to the city yesterday," she unknowingly bashed her teeth," She's a one on her own. I don't know where she got her stubbornness from"

Williams looked at her wife for a while, then smiled back at the two people in front of him, "May I know your names and what to tell her when she's back?"

Stanley delved into her bag for her phone. She brought out an ID card, "I'm Stanley. I'm a scientist. I work for Mr. Gauis Dickson."

"Same here too. We met with her a week ago when she came for your results"

Williams nodded once," I know Gauis, he's an honest man"

Stanley smiled," May I have her number then? We really need to meet her"

"Sure"

.

" You always amuse me, Jessica," Jake said and flashed his white set of teeth at Jessica.

Jessica smiled and moved to hit the balls in the pool. She waited while two balls rolled into the holes. Then she looked up at Jake, "Mehn, it felt so real. I thought the world was gone for real," she thought for a while and smiled again.

Jake laughed too," what other thing happened in the dream?"

Jessica stared at him dreamily," Well, I had this antivirus serum in my blood. It made me stronger instead of getting weak. I even used it for someone," she paused slightly, remembering Max's bright face. How can Max feel so real to her, "Mehn, it was like I was shooting a movie? It all looked like an apocalypse movie and I was the main character."

It still doesn't make any sense and Jessica couldn't even start to imagine it.

" So, you didn't see me?" Jake turned and hit the ball too

Jessica laughed," That's how I knew it was all a joke.

"There's no way I would miss you," she bent to play again," My parents were dead in the dream but they are still alive here. So, it's totally nonsense, "Jessica's phone rang suddenly, interrupting her from what she was about to say next.

She picked it even though it was an unknown line, "Yes, who's speaking."

"This is Stanley. I gave you an injection the day you came for your father's test. The result is out."

Jessica sighed, she had even forgotten about the test, "I will be there soon," she looked over at Jake and smiled," Soon," she repeated and the phone went off.

" Is something wrong?"

"You don't need to ask because you are going to go with me," she winked at him.

Well, Jake goes wherever she goes. They were almost like a family.

Maybe it was because they both grew close but Jessica seemed to see Jake as a half-brother to Jake, perhaps he wished they would be more.

They arrived at the hospital in no time in Jake's car.

Jake was a Mayor in the army and with the influence of Jessica's father was going fast upon the post. Jake was a strong guy.

Asides from that, he learned his martial arts before he clocked twenty. Aside from Jessica, there was no one in the army that could fight him.

Everyone feared him in the army. And the elders respected him. His first car was willed to him based on the merits he obtained so fast. His second car was brought with his hard-earned money. Nice right? Jake rose within the twinkle of an eye and became a young millionaire at the age of twenty-five. Now, he's thirty.

They walked inside and were led in by a young nurse there. When they entered, Marcus and Stanley, and Gauis were waiting patiently for them.

Jessica looked over at them, "Hi," she greeted with a curt bow.

"You brought a friend," it was Gauis that asked.

"Yes, a best friend. Where's the result?" She moved closer to a seat, with Jake closely behind him

"We actually have something else to show you, "Gauis said and stood. He took two steps forward, then turned around to look at surprised Jessica and Jake, "Please, do follow me," he said with a smile. Jake nudged Jessica and they both tagged along while Stanley and Marcus followed.

They walked for a while before they end up in a smaller room. Gaius moved closer to a big machine by the left.

Jessica found herself mesmerized by the paintings of the war for a while before she moved closer to Gauis.

Gaius turned to look at Jessica again, "I am Gauis and this is Stanley," he gestured at the lady by his left side, "And this is Marcus," he gestured at the guy by her right, "And this," he turned towards the big machine again, "Is the time-traveling Machine"

Jessica and Jake stared, very much surprised.

Jessica moved nearer and touched the machine. She had always heard of a traveling machine, a type of machine that could take one to the future. But she thought it was all a lie. Can technology really get that better? She had doubted it.

Actually, she had that some group of scientists was working fast toward creating one and had actually done so.

"So, this machine can take one into the future?" Jake walked closer, bewildered.

" Yes, it can," Marcus confirmed.

" Wow," Jessica exclaimed softly. She stopped suddenly and looked at Gauis in the eye, realization hits in slowly, "Wait, can one go into the future without knowing?"

"Miss Jessica, we want to apologize for something. Actually, it's for the betterment of our country. Yes, about your question. And I need to tell you that you did go into that future unknowingly"

What!

Jessica couldn't believe her ears. Wait! She's not even getting it. The epidermic? The virus? The end of the world? The suffering? That can't be the future right?

"What future are you talking about?"

Marcus took a step closer, "You need to tell us what you saw."

Jessica looked over at Marcus," What are you talking about?"

"We gave you a serum to aid the effect of the machine the day you came to the hospital for the test, "Stanley reminded her," You must have gone into the future and thought it was all a dream. What did you see?"

Jessica stared, unable she say a word.

That's nonsense! It wasn't even making any sense! As she had thought, her parents were dead when the pandemic broke up. But here, her parents were alive.

There was no way it could be the dream. It was all a lie! Something was wrong somewhere.

" You have to say something, Miss Jessica," Marcus reminded again, jotting Jessica out of her thoughts," What you see is definitely the future and can happen at any time."

Jessica couldn't speak, couldn't even think about it. It was impossible.

Jake stared hard at Gauis and decided to talk in her stead," She saw the end of the world".

Marcus' eyes went wider with shock," What! Are you saying the world would get ruined?"

Jessica couldn't even say anything. Actually, it felt like her current life was the dream she was living in.

Maybe she would wake up soon and beside Max eventually but where would she put Jake? It all just doesn't make any sense.

Everyone's mouth went wider with shock as they all turned to Jessica.

What the fuck!
