Special chapter: A purpose

I quickly walked over to Halley and checked for any physical damage.

Maybe she hasn't been infected yet, maybe her blood is O-, it would be best to get her out of here.

I covered Halley's mouth with my hand, leaving a very small space for her to breathe a bit, and I ran in any direction in a straight line.

After a few minutes, we were able to get out of the camp and out of the spore cloud.

As I kept running, all of a sudden, I could hear a small and weak voice.

"M-Mr. Ken" Halley muttered with difficulty.

Seeing her wake up, I cheered a little and put her gently on the floor, using what was left of my coat as a pillow.

"How are you feeling Halley?" I asked worried.

"Mr. Ken, I-I feel bad, I-I feel like my head is spinning and it's hard to think" Halley said confused.

"D-don't worry Halley, I'll find a way, a-any way to help you" I said scared.

"M-Mr. Ken never lies, but I'd like to get some sleep" Halley said narrowing her eyes a little.

"Don't worry, it will just be a little nap and when you wake up, I'll be here" I said as I shed some tears.

"I love you dad" said Halley opening her arms in the form of a hug.

"And I love you too daughter" I said while I hugged her tightly.

After a few seconds, I stopped feeling Halley's grip and saw that she was knocked unconscious again.

Her face began to fill with little fungus and her hair began to fall out.

At this, I could only collapse and cry just like I used to when I was little.

Why can I cry now?, Why not at my partner's funeral?, Why not with Kyle?

That just comes down to, I really did love her.

As I never loved anyone, a person that I really loved with the few feelings I have, whom I loved with all my heart.

I cried and cried, until I even thought I would drown with my own crying, until I had no more tears to shed.

The sun was shining brighter than ever, I don't even have rain for consolation.

I didn't arrive on time, I couldn't get her out of her problem, I couldn't do anything, as always, I'm just an idiot who can't keep his promise or do anything right.

Why did she have to trust me?, Why did she love me?, I don't deserve someone else's affection, I haven't earned it.

I don't deserve you Halley, I just don't deserve you.

But, even if I don't deserve you, you do deserve to be happy, I will find a way, a cure, whatever it is, to be able to save you and get you out of this problem.

What will be my first true purpose.

This problem got out of my hands, the whole camp fell and only the engineer, a nearly dead soldier and me were left.

I asked for backup after waking up, when the zombie knocked me unconscious.

They should be here in an hour, and I still don't know what I'm going to tell them.

I worry about the engineer, that he loses his sanity and does something crazy, I have already seen it several times in recent days.

So I started looking around the camp for him, and couldn't find anything.

I searched around the spore cloud and was able to find the engineer in front of his daughter's body.

I will never get used to seeing scenes like this in my work, much less from someone I like.

The engineer looks devastated, I can see tear marks on his cheeks, and his eyes lost all traces of brightness.

Seeing someone so expressive and sincere in this way is truly heartbreaking.

But I'm trained for this, so I went over to him to check on his condition.

"Hey engineer" I said in the softest voice I could do.

The engineer did not move from his place and continued with a blank look.

Just when I was about to call him again, he spoke earlier.

"Sergeant, do you have a research site here?" Ken said without changing his expression and speaking slowly.

I was a bit startled by that, but still answered his question.

"That's right, the white-colored store specializes in that" I said without asking questions.

"Could you find a place to keep Halley safe?" -Ken.

"I don't think it's a goo-" I said to be cut off by the engineer.

"It will only be for 2 months, keep her safe for two months and I will pay you somehow" -Ken.

I wanted to refuse again, but I couldn't help him before and he saved my life several times, it's the least I can do.

"Alright engineer, I'll get some favors" I said calmly.

"Thank you sergeant, take care of her please" -Ken.

After that he gave his daughter a little hug, walked in the direction of his car, looked for something and entered the white store.

I stayed by the girl's side waiting for reinforcements, it will be difficult, but I must keep her safe for two months.
