Chapter 18: Back to Bland

“How are you doing?” Detective Alvarado asked.

Leena flinched, lost in thought and forgetting that she was in the company of law enforcement. She’d never so much as been pulled over before, but here she was riding home in a police car. At least she was in the front seat, and it wasn’t the average police car with lights and sirens. “Oh, yeah. I’m okay. Just… tired or something.”

“Tired or something?” Detective Alvarado said, raising his eyebrow, obviously unconvinced.

Leena didn’t know what to say. It would be stupid of her to admit that she wasn’t ready to leave Ransom just yet. She’d only just met him, but she knew he was an enigma that she wanted to experience fully. But now she wouldn’t be able to. He’d sent her away.

“Did something… happen?”

Leena shook her head. “I mean, aside from getting kidnapped, thrown in a basement, and tied down to a chair… besides that *ss hat Manny roughing me up…. No, I guess nothing happened.”
