Underworld: Carbon

When the world changed all those years ago and people started to gain superpowers everyone thought they were living their wildest dreams. Everyone knew that things were about to change, that the world was about to enter a new age, an age of evolution. When I first got my powers I had no idea what to do with them, not because I didn't know what to do with them but because I didn't know where to start. I had no direction, but I had ambition. I knew I wasn't a good person and me gaining my powers wasn't going to change that either, I knew I wanted to reach the top but I didn't know the journey that I would take would be more brutal and dark than anything I've ever faced before. Looking back at it people have asked me if I had any regrets on my path and every time they ask I look back and everything that I've ever done and everything that got me to where I am. I laugh and turn to look at them and say this: "Fuck no. If I had the chance I would do it all again." *** I don't own the cover *** Earth in this novel is set in an alternate reality/universe so don't use common sense here.

Easy Money

I'm really starting to believe that there are people who are really searching for their own demise but just subconsciously don't know it.

What possible reason could there be for this guy to take the time out of his day to bother me? I know I look like a bum right now but this guy could've just ignored me but no, he had to do this to himself. Well. Can't be blamed.

"We got a problem?" I asked with narrowed eyes feeling the tension slowly rise in the air. I scanned the surroundings and realized that there was no crowd forming around us, but this only made me have more questions than answers.

Were these guys even well-known throughout Zone 3? The fact there was no crowd and no one was paying attention to us was a testament to that. Zone 3 was a super hot zone, with them taking up over seventy percent of the population, and even if this guy was a super he couldn't be a strong one with him having bodyguards walking around with him, he could actually be a mortal for all I know.

The treatment of Supers and Mortals was as different as night and day. Even if you were rich and had clout among the mortals it didn't matter, in the eyes of Superhumans, all mortals were ants, the lowest of trash.

I was an F-Grade Superhuman but that already made me stronger than all humans on earth put together. A peak Olympic Boxer would die from a nonchalant backhanded slap from me.

The blue-haired man laughed at me as if he heard the funniest joke of his life, "Do we have a problem?" He repeated in mockery, "Of course, we have a problem. A filthy street rat like you has the nerve to invade my personal space with your rancid presence and you still have to nerve to ask me if we have a problem." He spat with a frost-fueled tone, "Give me a reason why I shouldn't kill you right-"

Getting annoyed at this fool and being pressed for time I punched him in his jaw with such speed that my fist blurred against the friction of space, even his bodyguards couldn't react in time, and by the time they realized what happened the fool was on the ground.

"You were talking all this shit just to be a damn mortal all along?" I spoke with disappointment, no wonder nobody paid attention to this guy he was nothing more than an idiot who thought I was another one of those targets that he could bully to fulfill his worthless superiority complex and inflate his ego.

The bodyguards realizing that I was a superhuman dropped to their knees and began kowtowing before I could even shift my attention to them.

"Please spare us and forgive our master's ignorance!" They pleaded as they banged their heads on the concrete, busting their heads wide open but they ignored the pain, continuing to bash their foreheads.

"Shut up." I stated, "Give me all your Astral Dollars and I'll let this slide." I smiled as I revealed my real motive for knocking their master out. I wasn't a senseless killer and I didn't want any trouble and drawing the attention of people I didn't want to cross paths with this early.

This was a win-win for both parties, they got to live and I got some money for a place to stay and some clothes. Something I desperately needed and this guy must be rich as well so I might even be able to get a good quality hotel room.

Grateful that I was giving them a new lease on life the bodyguards quickly ran through their pockets frantically as if checking for something they have lost and pulled out around twenty-five thousand Astral Dollars and stretched it out to me as if it was an offering.

They looked at me and waited for my response but my only response was when I looked at the unconscious body of their master, "Take his cash too." I responded.

The bodyguard to my left immediately took off the black wristband on his master and unlocked it with his fingerprint before he handed it to me.

I took the wristband from him and used my senses to examine it my eyebrows shot up and the amount of money that was inside.

Let's just say...that I won't have to worry about money being tight for a while.

Putting the wristband on my left wrist I left some final words for the guards as I walked past them without looking back, "I think it's best if we all act like this event never happened. Pass this along to your master whenever he wakes up."

I didn't need to turn around to see them both nod in agreement as my senses picked it up and I continued walking down the street while searching for a hotel.

It didn't really matter what hotel it was as long it was good, I needed a place to rest. Although I've become a superhuman the mental fatigue was still there.

After I find a place to bathe and rest I'll find a store to get some clothes and then get some information about the underworld. If I want to rise through the world of supers I'm gonna need backing. I can't do everything by myself, at least not while I'm this weak.

I'll need to find a technique for myself. Esper meditation mantras are different from other supers and all the good ones were locked down by the corporations, clans, and academies.

But before all of that, I need an energy type to copy before I set foot in the underworld. I'm going there with my ass hanging out, I'll get eaten alive. I need to think about this choice carefully though since this was going to be the ability that I was known for and the ability organizations would see if they looked me up so it had to be useful until I reached at least A-Grade.

"I wonder if Energy Manipulation extends to elemental energy?" I asked as I walked through the southern district of Zone 3, "I'll find out about that in the future." I said after shaking my head and stopping in front of a tall hotel high-class hotel that seemed to infintley acend into the sky.

This was one of the most well known hotels in Zone 3.

The Continental.
