Chapter 76

Alex tucked in Malia, kissed her forehead, and adjusted the temperature in her room before leaving her room.

He then descended the stairs to have something to eat. Alex was a little worried about his team that had gone to retrieve the wolf from the center.

He had an inkling that the wolf was part of them for some reason. They had lived for a long time in the country, and his father, the former Alpha, had told him about them being the only wolves in the country.

Alex had gone further to check the continent and, he confirmed it further because he found no wolves. This went on to confirm that the wolf was family.

The doubts were there, but what were the chances that the wolf was brought into the country over the past decade? Alex along with his warriors had been very vigilant over the years with placing spies around just so they could track the movement of the hunters.

He could vividly say that nothing as big as smuggling in wolves had happened. He was immersed deep in thoughts wondering where the wolf had come from, that he didn't notice Dawson.

Of course, the lab was where it came from, but before that, where was it living before"

"Alpha," Dawson called out to Alex.

Alex was startled because he hadn't heard him coming. "Food has been served, Alpha."

"Thank you, Dawson," Alex said

He must have been far in his mind, not to have noticed Dawson's presence.

"Dawson, what are the chances that the wolf at the center is one of us?" Alex could only be vocal about his thoughts hoping that Dawson could give him something to work with.

"As far as my thoughts go, I believe it is one of us, Alpha," Dawson responded politely.

Dawson had the hunch for some time now but trusted his Alpha to have the same train of thoughts real soon. He was not wrong after all.

"And what is your basis?"

"It all goes back to the time when you sent the beta and Cross around the continent to find out the existence of any wolves, but they came back with nothing. One can only conclude that that wolf is from our very own country and we all know that we are the only pack existing in this country."

Dawson's explanation made everything more visible for Alex. If the wolf was indeed from their country, then how did it end up at the lab?

"The only time we lost wolves from the pack was ten years ago, and recently during the sweep" concluded Dawson.

Alex looked at him as if a light bulb had been switched in his head. The way Dawson said it made the hypothesis in his head clearer.

"Only two wolves were lost during the sweep; Denis and his other minion. That leaves us with the massacre"

The more the two of them reasoned, the more it got scary. What were the chances that there were more wolves at the lab, and why were they adamantly in need of the wolves?

The more he thought, the more frustrated it got for him. Had he lived all these years when his pack members were suffering?

"Alpha, there is nothing to blame yourself for. You were grieving and the massacre had claimed a lot of people and some were burnt beyond recognition. How were you supposed to know anything"

Dawson was seeing different emotions flicker through his Alpha's eyes one looked like guilt and he didn't want him to beat himself up.

"Have you had your meal yet, Dawson?" Alex asked suddenly with a calm voice

The change in tone and topic startled Dawson, but he still answered with a no. Alex then invited him to sit at the table and eat.

After Dawson took a seat on a seat away, the Alpha stood up and wished him a nice meal. Dawson stood up immediately and looked at Alex, who was heading to his study room.

Dawson grew sadder because of the way the Alpha looked dejected. It seems like he felt guilty for the wolf at the center.

Alex went into his coping room inside the study and closed the door. He then turned on the screens and the trees became visible. He didn't even undress this time and turned tearing his clothes in the process.

He growled in so much anger and the sound almost broke through the soundproofed room. Dawson, who had been left in the dining hall had followed after him and was now standing outside the door to the room that Alex was in.

He could understand how the Alpha was feeling, but he also knew that he wasn't to blame for anything that had happened to that wolf. Dawson believed that those who had taken it at that time were the ones to blame.

He then shook his head and silently left the study room since there was nothing he could do for the Alpha. If only Luna was awake at the moment.

The room Alex was locked in could only be opened from the inside if locked. There was nothing that showed a knob. If it didn't look like a door from the outside, one could mistake it for a design on the study wall.

Dawson then returned with clean clothes knowing very well that the Alpha had damaged the ones that he was wearing. He placed them on the couch in the study before going out.
