"Of all the times, seriously?" Keira muttered, seeing through the trees where the first light of day started to show their shadowy outlines.
Katrina was slumped against the tree, and another she-wolf stood over her.
"She was my mate!" The other she-wolf screeched, raising her elongated claws. She was close enough to make a fatal blow.
Keira moved before she could think.
One moment, she'd been at least ten meters away; the next, her right claws were embedded in the other she-wolf's throat. The woman stared wide-eyed at Keira, blood gurgling in her mouth and trickling down the side of her lips. Keira stared back, slightly frozen.
The she-wolf stood shocked, staring, clasping at Keira's arms, trying to inhale and grasping at life. Panic, her lips opening and closing as though trying to say something. Keira didn't move her hand; it would cause more pain before the woman's demise.
