Recovery

John could hear the soldiers behind him cheering from the distance.

"Yeah run you bastards."

Others were shouting.

"Woohoo we won."

As John was listening to all the cheering, a smile grew across his face. He looked back toward the base and saw soldiers walking back wounded. As he swept his head across the field he saw other soldiers were walking out with stretchers, to pick up the dead scattered throughout the perimeter.

John vanished in thin air, the soldiers looked around, confused of what had happened and where he went. He reappeared at the base right next to Sean.

"Well buddy we made it somehow. By the way where the fuck is Greag? He should be here by now."

Sean startled by John's appearance from thin air. Looked to him as if he had almost had a heart attack, clenching his chest.

"Damn dude, hahaha I'm not used to that yet. But I don't know actually. I thought he was out there with you."

John viewed straight out at the field, with a scowl upon his face. Ten minutes went by, and John was still keeping an eye out for Greag, to finally see a familiar helmet as it was being carried on a stretcher from the field. John ran out onto the field, to the soldiers carrying the body and asked for them to wait as he checked the body to verify. John looked down on the stretcher, at a man with a blade hole in the center of his chest, his blood already coagulated from being out for so long. John looked at the dog tags that were around the soldier's neck, and saw that it read.

"Greag Arnold Age: 28 Private"

John's face turned pale, as he looked down to his helmet, and began to remove it slowly. Once he had it off, he saw Greags lifeless face, his eyes were open, and were staring straight up.

John stood there staring down at him. He closed his eyes, and lowered his eyebrow down, squinted his eyes, trying to hold back the tears. Finally he managed to acquire himself. He opened his eyes and told the soldiers to continue walking. John trudged back slowly to Sean, staring down at the ground. He looked up slowly at Sean and sadly uttered.

"He's dead."

Later during that day, after they had cleared the field of the wounded and dead, and refortified the perimeter. John and his squad were inside the conference room with the generals and the base leader.

"How the fuck did these damn things find out where we we're hiding, and how did they get inside the base? We've lost a fraction of our civilians in this attack and countless soldiers."

The leader shouted at the generals, his face was beat red in anger. After a few seconds of silence one of the generals spoke up.

"Sir we are evaluating where they came from and how they got inside the base, we are led to believe this attack was a random attack. But it wasn't a disaster. We've pushed them out on a retreat, which is the most we've ever seen. We even managed to get one of those god people to flee. We have learned that these things can be beat."

Sean quietly mumbled under his breath.

"Yeah thanks to John and us."

The generals overheard him say that, looked at him with scowls on their faces. The five star general, a thin, shorter, white haired man with a scar across his cheek, looked at Sean and John and replied.

"You soldiers did your jobs and nothing more. I honestly don't even know what gives you the right to be in this room at all right now not to mention speak up."

Another general looked at the five star general and began.

"Sir, these are the guardians. The ones that got the special rank and free reign. They're here on that order."

The five star general scoffed and angrily said in return.

"I don't care who they are. They have no purpose for."

Before he could finish speaking, John teleported next to him and grabbed a hold of the generals collar and angrily told him.

"Now look here, I don't see you out there fighting these things or making the hard choices. So don't tell me what I can and can't do. You tasked us to protect this place and find out how to beat these things and gave us full immunity."

The general pushed against him to free himself. John threw him back faintly. The general gained his balance, fixed his collar, and looked at John in anger. He then ordered an officer that was standing on guard at the door.

"Officer arrest this man."

The officer moved in to grab a hold of John. But as soon as he got close to John, the base leader shouted out.

"No leave him be, general control yourself and John calm yourself. We don't need this."

The officer stopped dead in his tracks. John looked over to the base leader and did as he was asked and calmed down.

"Well I guess I'm done here then. I'm gonna head out."

John stated back. John turned to walk out of the conference room door, down the hallway, up several flights of stairs until finally in his room. He opened his door slowly and quietly. Looked through the dark to the bed, walked in, closed the door behind him softly and walked to the bed. Barely able to see anything that would be in front of him. John undressed, grabbed for the bed sheets, and crawled into bed. Sam felt someone in her bed, touching her side, woke up and quickly turned around to see it was John staring at her.

A smile grew upon her face. She leaned in and gave him a kiss. John grabbed her back and pulled her in close and softly whispered to her.

"Don't ever leave me."
