The 10,000th Tutorial
Cael has run the same tutorial ten thousand times.
Forty-eight hours, one cold room, locked doors, and a long list of things in it that want him dead. He knows all of them now. He has been killed by every one, more than once, which is a strange thing to be an expert in. When he dies the System sets him back at the start and he goes again. He has never finished it. Not once in ten thousand tries.
Nothing follows him between runs except what he remembers, and he remembers everything. Where the floor gives way. Which door is a lie. The exact second the thing in the dark starts moving. He is not strong and he never gets strong; that is not what this place does to you. What it does is wear you down until watching is the only skill you have left. Ten thousand years in, Cael is not a hero. He is just very tired, and very good at noticing, and completely on his own.
Then, on the ten thousandth run, something slips.
He wakes up on the floor and there is a woman next to him. Her name is Bex, and she remembers it too. All of it. Every loop, every ending, every time she died a few feet away from him and he could not stop it. She is not glad to see him. She has not forgiven him for any of those deaths and she will not tell you she is going to, because she does not know if she is.
But something happened to her screen down in all those runs. It cracked. And a cracked screen turns out to be worth more than a working one, because it shows her the parts the System keeps covered up. The false doors. The bait. The thin seams in a room that was built, very carefully, over a very long time, so that nobody would ever find them.
For ten thousand years Cael thought the break was the damage. It took Bex about a day to show him it was the way out.
What happens after that is not the usual thing, where the numbers climb and the hero gets mighty. It is quieter and harder than that. It is two exhausted people, plus a handful of frightened strangers they are too stubborn to abandon, slowly figuring out the one fact the System never wanted anyone to have. It never beat them by being stronger. It beat them by making sure they were always alone, each one sure they were the last person still fighting. And the thing it cannot survive, the thing it was never built for, is a room full of people holding on to each other and refusing, together, out loud, to give up.
This is grounded progression fantasy. Tired heroes, real stakes, and numbers that cost something when they move. It is a story about a man who lost the same room ten thousand times, and the person who finally walked in and made it a different room.
New chapters go up regularly. If it grabs you, adding it to your library is the best way to keep it going, and a Power Stone never hurts.
Thanks for reading.
