Underworld: Carbon

When the world changed all those years ago and people started to gain superpowers everyone thought they were living their wildest dreams. Everyone knew that things were about to change, that the world was about to enter a new age, an age of evolution. When I first got my powers I had no idea what to do with them, not because I didn't know what to do with them but because I didn't know where to start. I had no direction, but I had ambition. I knew I wasn't a good person and me gaining my powers wasn't going to change that either, I knew I wanted to reach the top but I didn't know the journey that I would take would be more brutal and dark than anything I've ever faced before. Looking back at it people have asked me if I had any regrets on my path and every time they ask I look back and everything that I've ever done and everything that got me to where I am. I laugh and turn to look at them and say this: "Fuck no. If I had the chance I would do it all again." *** I don't own the cover *** Earth in this novel is set in an alternate reality/universe so don't use common sense here.

F-Grade Super

Espers were the most unique Profession of all of the five classes and it wasn't even close.

The way Espers would gain their strength was completely different from other supers since the method for Espers was very unique and very personal to them and every other super in general. Espers were beings that possessed all kinds of supernatural powers and this was achieved by the super activating the genetic code in their DNA.

It's also the only class that has a high-risk factor as not every super has an Esper Ability contained in their DNA, there have been events of Supers activating their Esper Abilities naturally but the method to do so is unknown as the cases where the ability was unlocked naturally were all different from each other, chalking up the incidents as divine intervention.

Esper Abilities weren't pre-determined, since the Abilities were based on the genetic code every ability was different, even if two people seemed to have the same ability. There was no way of knowing what your ability was before you unlock your gene chain and the only way of knowing was by becoming an Esper, this was one of the reasons why becoming an Esper was a high risk since you could end up with a shitty ability and could do nothing about it.

Once you unlock your gene chain your fate as an Esper was set in stone. The only way to avoid this fate was if you didn't have any abilities dormant in your DNA in the first place, if so then becoming an Esper was impossible and you would have to pick another super profession.

Esper abilities were very diverse and the number of possible options was literally uncountable since there were too many variations of well-known abilities. Espers who gain the same powers might not be able to use them in the same ways as others. For example, an Esper with a lightning ability may be able to summon lightning from seemingly thin air while some with the same lightning ability might only be able to conjure lightning during storms. So to some extent, some Espers were forced to specialize.

There was one thing that was so important that it completely determined your future as an Esper and that was your potential rating. Potential Rating was the grade of your Esper Ability once you unlocked it, at first glance most would think that Potential Rating determined what grade the Esper Ability and in turn, the Super who wielded it would be at its peak but that was only part of it.

The Potential Rating covers the elements of the super and the Esper Ability they acquired: The potential of the ability, the growth rate of the super, and the quality of the Esper Ability. An S-Grade Potential Esper Ability means that the super who wields it could in theory become an S-Grade Superhuman. Espers could also possess the same ability but have different potential ratings. Two Espers could have abilities that give them super speed but the potential of the first Esper could be S-Grade with the other's being D-Grade.

"Since the Super Awakening Potion completely reconstructed my body to be in its most perfect state, this means my genes are at the best they possibly can be. If I chose to become an Esper no matter what the ability is it should be an S-Grade ability or an A-Grade if I'm just unlucky." I said as I confirmed what my choice would be. There was too much potential held in my body thanks to the potion and I don't have to worry about getting a worthless ability thanks to the potion.

After taking a deep breath I selected the Esper option and let everything else do the work. All I could do now is hope.

[You have selected the Esper Profession]

[Activating DNA...]

[Unlocking Genetic Chain...]

[Congratulations! You have unlocked the Esper Ability 'Energy Manipulation']

[You have evolved and have become an F-Grade Esper]

A massive and pure burst of energy erupted within me and spread throughout my body, I closed my eyes to focus on the new euphoric feeling. Looking inwards I could see the energy filling my cells and seeping deep into my bones, blood, and organs, evolving them to levels far beyond human limits. But another energy was circulating through my body but I couldn't determine where it was, I knew that this energy was refining my genetic code to awaken my Esper Ability but I couldn't locate it which was weird.

I moaned in pleasure at the feeling of energy flowing through my veins. It felt like I had taken a dip into a hot spring, the feeling was so good that I couldn't even explain it, it was indescribable.

My injuries were healed from the potion so I was able to move around without any hindrance. I went to the shore to see how I looked from the potion and now became a superhuman. There were some cases where the features of some superhuman would change after awakening. The chances of such a mutation would increase if one took a Super Awakening Potion before becoming a super and those chances further increased the higher the grade of the potion, so in my case, it was almost a certainty.

When I kneeled in front of the shore of the clear ocean and bent forward a little my mouth and eyes widened in disbelief at the reflection.

I was ten years old but thanks to the introduction of energy in the world and the subtle evolutions of humans due to them adapting to it for so long kids were able to mature much faster compared to the past so while I was young the intelligence I had was comparable to mid to late teenagers that had high intelligence. I had normal black hair and brown eyes with smooth dark skin. I was pretty handsome for a kid, if I had to give a non-bias rating of myself based on appearance alone I would give myself a solid seven. But what I was seeing in this reflection was unrecognizable to my past self.

My black hair had changed to a vibrant gold while my eyes went from brown to a soul-stirring violet. I was still dark-skinned but my skin seemed to gain a new shine to it which enhanced my now bewitching features. I also grew a little taller and gained some muscle definition on my slim yet athletic body.

"I should buy myself a hoodie when I get the chance. I'm just a newly awakened F-Grade Esper, the weakest of the weak in the world of Superhumans. I don't even qualify to be an ant, I don't want to attract the attention of some sick fuck and the next thing I know I'm being drugged and sex trafficked."

Taking a little more time to analyze my change I stood up and stretched, I did a few exercises to get used to my new body, and when I did I finally realized how astronomically wide the gap between supers and mortals was.

When I finished completing the exercises I opened my status window to see my new ability, I didn't have a chance to look since I was focused on the feeling of officially becoming a superhuman.

When I looked at the bottom of my status window my body stilled in shock. I rubbed my eyes to make sure my mind was playing tricks on me and when I read the same description of my ability without any edits my shock changed to fear when I started comprehending the capabilities of this ability.

"Can something like this really exist?" I questioned after reading the description of my ability for the fourth time. I looked at the now empty briefcase and got lost in thought, "That S-Grade potion really changed everything, I kinda feel bad for the person I stole this from now."

Think of Espers as Conduits from the Infamous and Infamous Second Son. The only difference is that Esper Abilities are not just limited to forms of matter.
