Chapter 8

Looking through the mythology books, Arthur quickly found something that piqued his interest.

It was a brown hardcover book, on its back, the title was inscribed in red.

[ The Real Myths ]

Compared to the other books, this title was the only one that insinuated that the mythological creatures were real.

Arthur didn't have much hope for it as he knew it could simply be a title made to captivate the reader's curiosity and nothing more.

Either way, deciding that he would give it a try, Arthur quickly took the book and hid it under his clothes before using his belt to firmly press it against his body so that it would be less noticeable that he was hiding a book.

Turning around, Arthur started walking towards the exit, merely lifting his hand as he passed by the old woman behind the counter.

Given his good reputation, she had never once thought that Arthur would be stealing a book.

"I'm heading out, I'll be back in a few days to see if something new comes ma'am," Arthur said as he gave her a wave of his hand whilst he headed to the door.

"All right, see you next time Arthur, have a nice day!." The woman replied still not even lifting her head from the book she was reading.

"Yeah, have a nice day," Arthur said before opening the front door and heading outside.

'As easy as always.' Arthur thought.

He had been stealing books like this for months, and as long as he returned them before the last Friday of the month where the woman would count to see if all the books were in their right places and check who was borrowing books and were late on their returns then Arthur would never be found.

Walking through the snow-packed streets, Arthur headed back toward his house.

He arrived there later, only to lie on his bed once again and start reading the book he had stolen.

[ The Real Myths ]

'Let's check this out.' Arthur thought to himself as he flipped to the first page of the book.

He had developed a habit of talking to himself recently, though he didn't mind it. It was a way that made him feel like he wasn't as alone.

'This book describes sightings of Mythological creatures that have been seen in the real world.'

'Alright.' Arthur thought before flipping the page, the title of the very next page was called 'Vampires'

'Vampires are a widely known mythological species, they have been sighted in multiple regions of this world. The easiest way to tell a vampire is by their red feline eyes and their large fangs.'

'It's a fake.' Arthur immediately determined however he continued reading the book.

Even if the information was fake and didn't really hold anything about real vampires, it was still a book he hadn't read before and so he could use it to pass the time.

Hours passed by as Arthur continued reading, It was only when the night approached and the moon reached its highest position did Arthur plopped the book down, finishing it completely.

'A good enough read I suppose.' Arthur thought before turning around on his side and closing his eyes, falling asleep almost instantly.

It was at this moment that a shadow covered Arthur's face, blocking the lighting from the lit stove on his right.

'Arthur?' Alice thought as she looked at his sleeping figure.

It was a shock, to say the least, she hadn't expected this…

'You've been living here? Alone?' Alice thought to herself as she started walking through the house.

'So that's why you were out hunting in the forest.' Alice thought as her face scrunched up in frustration.

'Whilst I was taking my time in figuring out a way to meet you properly, whilst I was afraid that you would be weirded out by me. You were living like this.'

Her face scrunched up even further, however no tears came out of her eyes.

She couldn't shed them after all, no matter how emotional she got, no matter how much she wanted to cry, she simply couldn't.

All that was left was this feeling of suffocation, a feeling of loss so overbearing that it almost caused her to drop to her knees.

'I'm sorry Arthur, I really didn't know.' Alice thought before turning around and similarly to a shadow, she disappeared from the abandoned house as if she had never been there at all.

Hours later, Arthur's eyes snapped open.

It was the early morning hours, an hour before he had to get to school.

Turning around, he got up from the bed and headed to the stove, igniting the fire that had stopped burning sometime last night. Then, he headed to the kitchen to take out another piece of rabbit meat.

Roasting the rabbit meat for a few minutes, Arthur quickly dug into it as soon as it was ready, finishing his small meal in a few short minutes.

'Alright, I'll have to wash my clothes at school today.' Arthur thought as he changed out of his current clothes that he had worn for a few days now and switched into his second set.

He only had these two pairs of clothes, so he had to rotate between them every few days, washing a pair whilst he wore the other.

He had thought of stealing clothes however every shop in Forks that sold clothes had cameras everywhere and he would most likely get caught in the act which would be a hassle he didn't want to deal with.

Wearing his new clothes, Arthur placed the other pair into his backpack after folding them carefully.

Turning toward the lit stove, he quickly killed the fire so that he would save some of the charred wood for when he came back from school.

With that done, he headed outside of the house and toward Fork's high school.

'I hate washing day.' Arthur thought as he walked.

He would always get stressed that someone would find out, however, he hadn't been found a single time yet so it was less stressful than the first time he had done it.
