The First Monster

Danu Douglas was tired. She was tired of running, tired of fighting, and tired of crying. She knew it was weak of her to want to give up, but losing Daniel had been her last straw. All she wanted now was a nice place to rest her head, a regular routine, and somewhere where her demons couldn’t find her. So when Daniel had offered her a place to hide with his dying breath, she felt that whatever god had given her this lousy fate was at least trying to make it up to her. Too bad she had been wrong. Just like she had always worried, she was pretty sure that there was no god. No one to call out to when she needed help. No one to rescue her when things got too hard, and certainly no one who was going to mourn her death. After all, she couldn’t die.

Meeting the little prince

After the brief introductions, Kenji chased everyone else away so that he could continue to show Danu around the school. Danu continued to be surprised by the differences in the two brothers. Kenji was more outwardly kind when compared with his brother. Daniel had always been nice, if a little stoic, but his smiles had been rare. Kenji gave them freely, easily. It was a small thing to note, but Danu appreciated the slight difference. If he had been too similar to his brother this would have been even harder.

Everything about this school felt like a giant flex of wealth. It had state of the art facilities with features most schools wouldn't have. Students wore uniforms, which confused Danu until Kenji explained that it was for normalcy. Each student's individual difference was taken into consideration, and they were all given similar if not the exact same outfit. Fostered a better identity for them not only as students, but as proud people of this area.

Danu felt that this was the yakuza part of him speaking, but humoured him nonetheless.

Kenji confirmed for Danu that they had built this place with the thought of the expanding population. At large, birth rates were still declining. But in this area? They were increasing. It was only a matter of time before more kids would enter the school. It was an alarming thought, but Kenji seemed so upbeat about it that shouldn't couldn't find it in herself to dwell on it negatively. Growing populations weren't the worst thing. Not even if they were a lightly policed, superpowered growing population.

He led them back to the teacher's lounge, and met with the other teachers there again. Most were gone, but Ms. Hitori still remained inside. She was quite bubbly and cute, filling the air with idle chatter. She, of course, asked what Danu could do. Kenji jumped in, upset that she was trying to win so quickly. Danu, having not a single clue what was going on, was briefed on the situation.

The teachers had a poll going, guessing what Danu's powers were. There was quite a bit of money on it apparently, and Ms. Hitori had quite a bit invested. If Danu had forgotten that this was a joint venture between the government and a gang, she had remembered quickly. Danu sealed her lips. She wasn't going to tell anyone, even if they were cute like Ms. Hitori. For her part, she was quite upset that Danu had turned her down.

Kenji however, openly and easily told her what his super powers were. In fact, he seemed to be bragging. He was not upset about her hiding her powers, and instead viewed it as a challenge. Another similarity between Daniel and him, but Danu took this one with stride. No one should know what she could do. Ms. Hitori seemed to view Danu favourably, and she didn't want to change her perception of her so soon. Danu didn't want anyone else to know what she was, and she also didn't want anyone else like her to exist.

She'd gone to great lengths to make sure those damn scientists never had another 'breakthrough'.

The bell rang, and Kenji and Ms. Hitori had to leave. Kenji had given her another schedule, and warned her that the next period was theirs. He'd showed her where their joint classes were held, so she knew where to go next without his guidance. The two left her alone in the lounge, and she wondered for a moment if she should drop by the teacher's dorms to drop of her things. She felt restricted by her bags being out in the open. She didn't want others to have a change to go through them, even if they held very little in regards to monetary wealth. They only held sentimental value to her.

Danu felt her hands roam towards her wrist, where the small, metal bracelet sat. That was one of the few items she had that wasn't just for sentimental value. Daniel and Danu hadn't been alone in the military. They'd had one more friend. Wanda Zorn was their third in command and Danu's other best friend. Both her and Daniel had joined around the same time, but while Daniel had passed away, Wanda was still very much alive. She was still back in Canada. She had to be. If they had both run away at the same time they would have found them immediately. Plus, Wanda had helped her out. With Wanda's smarts, and abilities, she had helped her remove one of the ways they could have tracked her, and this bracelet was also another preventative method.

They had hoped they had gotten all of them. Danu's throat filled with bile. She prayed they had gotten all of them.

Danu, deciding that she would wait for Kenji to show her to the teacher's dorms after classes finished, sat down on one of the couches and tried to relax. How was she going to handle working in a school? She'd never taught anyone in her life. It'd also been ages since she'd been around children, especially teenagers who were full of hormones. How was she supposed to treat them? They weren't quite adults, but they weren't quite kids either. She had no idea how to relate to them. She hadn't been a normal kid when she'd gone through school either.

She'd been taken in by a relative after her parents had died in a tragic car crash. She'd hated the family, and hated relying on them even more, so she'd put her head down and studied, wanting to be out from under their grubby, greedy roof as soon as possible. That was how the military snuck in. They had taken advantage of her tender, but rage filled heart and-

Danu took a deep, calming breath. No. No thinking. No remembering. This was a fresh start. There was no need to dwell in the past.

Deciding that sitting down was going to get her nowhere, Danu stood, and decided to do another lap of the school while classes were in session. Kenji hadn't said she needed anything for their first class together, so she grabbed nothing. Empty-handed, she wandered the halls, taking in the scenery as she calmed herself.

Until she heard a faint, familiar sound. Danu turned, heading towards the noise.

Outside the window, in a small, but secluded area, three kids were ganging up on another three kids. It felt like a turf war, and it probably was. At a minor league level. There were two witnesses off to the side, and it was clear that they were trying to get them to back down. It wasn't working. Danu was about to let this continue on, it wasn't any of her business, when she saw flames dance in one of the student's hands. Frowning, knowing damn well that powers weren't supposed to be used outside of classes when it came to children, she glanced around. She didn't see an easier way to get to them, and jumping from the window didn't seem to be the smartest move...She headed for the front doors.

Danu wasn't a master at disguise for nothing, and when she casually came around the corner, whistling while the group of idiots pounded each other, she could tell that they were surprised. Danu's surprise on her face was fabricated, her eyes wide and large. She even covered her mouth with her hand, showing off the gaudy press on nails.

"Boys, aren't you supposed to be in class?" She asked, concern lacing her tone. By now several of the boys were on the ground. There were several burn marks on the ground, along with slashes in the shrubs and trees around them. They had been clearly using their powers recklessly. Danu wanted to roll her eyes at such teenage antics, but felt that wouldn't help the situation.

"Oh great. Another fucking busybody. Leave us the fuck alone, lady." One of the boys on the ground growled. Danu for her part was surprised he had the strength to be so snarky.

"But it's against rules to be fighting with powers. Isn't that right?" There was a slight tone shift and she watched as the group all glanced at one boy in particular. He wasn't too handsome, nor did he have an amazing presence, but they clearly looked to him for guidance. He stared at Danu for a long few seconds, before spitting blood-laced spit on the ground.

"Leave lady. This doesn't concern you." His tone was harsh, and Danu could tell that he was used to getting his way. Alarms went off in the back of her head, but Danu smiled at the young group of thugs. They wouldn't fire her for this, right? She was enforcing the school's policies, right?

"I'm afraid I can't do that. You used your powers outside of class and I can't let that slide. If you had only used your fists, I wouldn't have thought to bother you." She smiled widely at them, warmly, but that didn't seem to help the situation. "Tell you what? It's my first day here. Anyone who leaves within three seconds will get a pass. Sound fair?" She proposed, but that didn't seem to win her any favours.

"Who the hell do you think you are? You don't know a goddamn thing about us." One of the boys on the sidelines sneered at her. Danu blinked.

"Who am I? Didn't you boys know that a new teacher was arriving? I'm her." She pointed at herself in explanation and the young leader of the group snorted.

"So you haven't been introduced yet. Well, good. You aren't going to last a second here. Do you know who my Father is? You're toast." The boys around him went white, even the boys he'd been fighting before. Danu, however, took it in stride.

"1." Danu started, completely ignoring the brat. The boys seemed stunned she'd outright ignored him. "2." She continued, and panic began to show on their faces. Clearly, they were worried about someone who had such a lack of care about their leader. The witnesses split immediately, while the second trio pulled their two members up and off the ground. No one else ran. Looking as if they were planning to fight Danu herself. She smiled. "3. Alright boys, follow me." She winked, but none of them moved. She sighed, placing her hands on her hips. "Did you forget what I said? I'm the new teacher. I don't have ties to anyone but myself." The young thug leader glared at her.

"You're fucking dead meat once Dad hears about this." She smiled at him warmly, maybe with a bit of mocking mixed in.

"Oh? I'd love to see him try. Come on." She was prepared to pick them up and carry them if need be, but when the young thug leader followed after her, the others did as well. She led them like a mother duck, the ducklings trailing behind her and attracting attention. The little smirk on the leader's face told Danu that her fears were correct, but it was too late to back down now.

She ran into the Principal of the school in the hallway on the way to the teacher's lounge.

In her opinion, he looked like a floozy. He was a tall, handsome man with long black hair and glasses. He wore a suit, and had a lofty, holier than thou air to him. He reminded her of one of her former supervisors.

She may have forgotten to save him once.

"Ms. Douglas! What on earth are you doing?" He demanded and they halted. She smiled.

"I caught these boys in the middle of a fight using their powers. I stepped in and stopped it. Do we have an issue?" He adjusted his glasses.

"Ms. Douglas, that young man-" Danu could tell the kid was smug behind her.

"-Isn't hurt. At least not by my hand. I didn't touch them. If they had continued, someone could have gotten seriously hurt. Right, Mr. Principal?" She suggested and he held his tongue as she led the group into the lounge. She found a first aid kit and gently patched up those who were injured while the Principal hovered around them. It was clear by his behaviour that when Kenji had warned her about the next head, he'd meant it. His father had put a lot of money into this school by the way this idiot was behaving.

"Most punishments are handed out by their homeroom teachers, Ms. Douglas." The Principal told her over the rim of his tea cup. He had been hovering over her shoulder as if he was worried she'd hurt a hair on this damn prince's head. The kid knew it too, which only made it more annoying.

"Oh? I had no idea that the school had such interesting policies." Danu didn't make eye contact with the Principal, but she could tell he was pissed. He followed her as she escorted the kids to their respective homeroom teachers, knowing damn well they weren't going to be punished in any capacity. Once they got back to the lounge, he tore into her.

"That young boy is the child of the 6th generation Boss of the area! He is going to be the next head! You cannot treat him or his friends like that!" Danu let him rant at her while she calmly made herself a cup of tea. She was tired of coffee. Maybe this was her time to start enjoying what tea had to offer? "I know that Mr. Shibata's brother suggested you, but if you aren't going to follow the ru-" Danu leveled him with a calm stare and he stuttered to a stop. She could tell that this man was a push over. That was why she didn't like him. He was a kiss ass, and she'd always had problems with those types.

"You hired me. In fact, if I remember correctly, you were overjoyed to have someone like me on your staff. If you are so easily swayed by one action, I myself am doubting why I am here. Especially when that action was in line with the guidelines printed in the handbook that was sent to me before I arrived here." She took a sip of her hot tea. "If you are asking me to treat one student better than the rest, I'm not going to. I'm also not going to stop breaking up fights where they go too far. Maybe you should get the word out to your friends bout what I plan to do, since it would be even worse if word got out what this school actually was." His face went white and he sputtered before rushing into his office and slamming the door. Danu sipped her tea again. What a wimp.

Heads up, her supervisor did not survive. :)
