Who says you can’t apply games to real life? But even she can’t say she wasn’t surprised or scared when she found a Zombie in her closet, oh boy she was terrified.

"Can I ask where I am?" Gabriel asked in a very reserved temper. No anger or fear, just curious about what happened to him because all he remembered was the car accident that happened to him.


"Exchanging your life to a stranger? How admiring that even got me enthralled by your heroic deed." The voice answered as if she was happy.


"Can I please know what happened to me?" Once again, he asked because the unknown entity did not answer his first question.


"Oh? Sorry about that. Did you hear the `champion` word I named you lately?" Trying to remember about it, Gabriel was indeed called a `champion` by the mysterious feminine voice.


"So, what will that word be a part of me here?"


"With-in 540,000,000 people died in the same year as you. You were the only person that accumulated so much help to the world that will end soon enough."


To what the voice said, this made Gabriel shocked and scared, what immediately entered in his mind is his family and his girls, then the people that he helped and helped him as well.


"You don't have to worry about that. That is why I chose you because you accumulated the best Karma than the others. You can use it as an exchange for some abilities that will help you save the earth."

My first mission is to save a world that is similar to mine. Modern with the same year. The world will experience a zombie apocalypse, and all I have to do is find out who the cause of it and a cure.

The way they sound, the way they move, the way they look, and if you did try to smell them… the way they smell.
What's coming out of the gates are real zombies.
There was even one without a lower body, crawling using its hands.
"Eeeeek!" "Are you kidding me!" "I-is this f-for real?"

The panic of the people has peaked.
At the initial summoning, there were five zombies summoned on each gate.
Ray checked the zombies coming out of the gate nearest to him.

Looking at the zombie's stats, if comparing to the average human around Ray then it has strength double of that of the average person, however, if he took what the status says to mind then the zombies are ridiculously slow, with them only having about a third of an average person's agility.
Ray began checking other zombies to see if all are the same. Discovering that they are all indeed almost the same, or at least for the majority of the ones currently outside the portals.
Not knowing anything about what the angel wants, who knows what other else is waiting to come out.
Still, Ray thought that if the naive him survived this event, then the current situation shouldn't be too brutal, but that is with the account that the task didn't change due to some butterfly effect or something.
"Everyone! there are swords below our foot!" Someone shouted informing every one of the weapons the same as the one which Ray earlier found.
The voice then followed, "We need to work together!"
Ray thought that being able to work together is remarkable.
But Ray didn't plan on listening further to the people around.
Knowing what's coming. Ray knows that he needed to grow stronger.
His current strength paled in comparison to the strength of the beings on his dreams.
He should take the initiative because time waits for no one.
He grips the sword on his right hand tight. Feeling the emptiness on his left hand, ray thought that a shield would've been good.
Ray then slowly walk into the direction of someone as the people around are nervously trying to get into a clumsy formation.
The zombies are slow but they are now a huge number of them.
with about ten zombies in each portal.
And it's still not stopping on summoning zombies, but right now the rate of summoning had slowed, it was only summoning 1 zombie at a time.
Ray picks up another short sword on the ground which the owner of the sword saw a few meters away.
"Quack!!!" "Quack! Quack!!!"
The owner of the sword shouted its objections and tried to take back the sword.
But Ray didn't pay it any mind.
It was even slower than a normal zombie right now.
Ray gripped it tightly with his left hand.
Now it didn't feel empty.
Ray then looked at the zombies around. For some reason, they were still weren't attacking and were just loitering around their area near their gates.
Looking at them, there was a considerable distance from each zombie, so if he was just fast enough and attentive, he could avoid being surrounded easily.
They may be slow but seeing the earlier warning of the inspect skill. Being wounded by one would probably be a fatal mistake.
The people around had already formed a clumsy circular formation waiting for the zombies, but he didn't plan on joining them.
Ray took a deep breath to calm himself. Being too excited could be detrimental.

If they wait till all the zombies are finished being summoned on each gate then it would be a lot harder.
Then as Ray arrived half the distance on the nearest zombie, he began accelerating.
Being careful not to consume too much stamina on his movements, it was a controlled acceleration.
with just enough speed to take advantage of the zombie's sluggish movement, he came near the zombie and turned around it with a swing of his right sword before it could even react.
From the stories he had read and the games he had played, the zombie's weakness would always be at the head, so right now, he thought that it was best to aim at it. He didn't know anything about these zombies, so he could only use whatever he could, and right now it was the only knowledge that he had about zombies.
Ray could only feel a little bit of resistance on his sword as it slices the zombie's head in half splashing yellowish liquid.
It seemed that he put too much strength on it. It wasn't as hard as he had thought it would be.
His stats and unique skill probably have something to do with it.
Since slashing is too much, it seems, for now, he should only stab their heads if he could.
But it seems he was right this time, killing these zombies did gave him rewards.

Right now, he didn't even know how long it would've taken him if he would try to increase all his current stats by 1 through training alone.
However, it only needed him 1 apple of weird color to achieve almost such achievement.
It even increases his Mana too.
Ray looked at the people at the center and he could see that several people are throwing various ranged attacks, which were most likely their unique skills.

As Ray killed another zombie in front, he began eyeing the zombies coming to him from the other gates.
'it's time to move on to the next gates'

It's been 5 years since Ray had been receiving vivid dreams about him being in an unknown place fighting countless life and death battles. And with him feeling every event on it like it was his own, these dreams had changed him, 

And now here he was, after 5 years of feeling a vague premonition, he was now summoned on a familiar place.

Takumi decided to clean his body and enter the bath. His lower body is sticky due to the sexual activity that is done many times in a short period of time. You could even said he exercising due to the amount of sweat generated.

In addition to that, Yumi and Hiromi also join. But the bathtub is only able to fit one people so they are left on the floor.

The purpouse is not to clean their body only but to examine it closer. Observing the two bodies, he ask them to clean theirself whule he is observing.

"Except for a scar on her stomach, Hiromi's body is flawless. Yumi's too is amazing. But it was pale."

It was because the heart has stopped so the blood isn't circulating. He was worried if one day they will become rotten and smelly. There's also no other wound.

"I wonder if the wound they get when infected is already healed."

However his thought is distracted by a low growl from his stomach.

He decided to eat immediatelly. While he electricity is still running, he will use microwave to heat frozen food. When the electricity run out it will be a junk and melted because the fridge was off.

"What am I supposed to do with the two of you?"

The image of a typical zombie in movie and games attending to their daily needs is never be shown. In movie and games they are only eating humans. Now he's going to live with two zombie, not a pet cat or dog.

"The janitor seemed to be eating a corpse. I wonder if it was because of hunger or what?"

Takumi took out the frozen food that is already warm and split it between the three of them.

"They will eat it if they want to eat it."

He don't know how the metabolism of a zombie works. However the scene of the girl eating the food surprised him.

"Does it mean from now on I have to keep them well fed?"

Seeing them could eat normally Takumi start to think.

"No need to feed them anymore. But,"

Takumi is in dillema. His food will run out faster. He wantes to keep them mainly to be used as sexual partner but he also still need to experiment with the instruction. They also may be useful later on. It's not a good idea to abandon them now.

"Well, if they keep eating won't their stomach will be full eventually because they couldn't digest it?"

He is worried if one day they will spit out food from their mouth.

"Seeing them eating now, if there's a corpse in front of me I wonder if they will change."

Takumi didn't stay any loger and reorganizing things. He secure food and water, put them in one box, maybe if they decide to leave the apartment he will be able to carry it wih him. He turn on the radio and TV however the same recorded emergency news is the one that aired. On the net it's even worse. They are all spamming their death's will.

The second night of the apocalypse come. Takumi is now dressed in all black to blend in with the darkness. He want to study zombie habits when the night have come. It is still unknown wether they will be normal or not, if they still obeyed him or not.

"They said the zombie at night is more aggresive. I have to fins out if they are still obeying my words or not."

He want to bring weapons but right now he only have kitchen knives and pans.

"I'll just run when it's get worse."

Takumi go out and there's no sign of zombie.

"This is terrible."

When he reach the road, he gasped involutarily. As far as he can see, dead bodies are lying down and scattered. People that have been eaten in half. Broken glasses and pool of blood. He arrived at the convenience store and see two zombie is moving around. It semed that they didn't noticed him.

"To think that it was only the second day."

Takumi walking in the shadow avoiding street lamp. He met a middle aged zombie but he followed his instruction to "go away". Therefore he is relieved that even at night his words still have power.

"We arrived."

It was a perfectural elementary school building. This place is the emergency shelter for this area. If some disaster happened, this is the evacuation spot. If there's a human refugee camp this is the place.

There's no light coming out. There's no sign of people there.

"Maybe it's to avoid the zombie attention."

Afterall he wouldn't know if he didn't check.it. The best place to check is the gymnasium. However in the yard he already saw a small figure wrigling. It was a small boy zombie. Several children also coming there. When one of them saw Takumi, they start to run to him at an outstanding pace. Takumi immediately run from seeing the horror scene.

"This is hell."

The sight of lifeless children chasing him is burned in his mind. At that time, two shadowy figures arrived at his side. They wear gym suit and their name tag is still clear. "5th grade Hayami Rika" and "5th grade Fujishima Yayoi".

One day a horde of zombies appeared in the world, causing panic and mayhem. The MC was also attacked by a zombie but he didn’t turn into one, instead he gained an ability. In a world where social order has collapsed. I think I’ll live to my hearts content using this ability of mine!

'What a beautiful day indeed! birds are chirping happily, the streets are lively, its as if today would be the last day on earth.'

"And what better way to start my day than a nice cup of coffee!"

I stopped watching the scenery outside my window, and turned back to go to the kitchen in order to use the coffee maker.

"Let's see.... Are there still any coffee beans left in here?" I said as I look inside the kitchen cabinets.

"Ah! Bingo! come to daddy," I then grabbed the coffee bean bag and proceeded to pour the coffee beans into the coffee maker.

"Now I just need to wait for them to turn into liquid coffee, I still got some minutes to spare before that happens so I might as well kill time by looking at the scenery outside."

"Now that I finished my coffee, going for a light jog might not be that bad."

I then went ahead and climbed upstairs my house and entered my room, I began to change my entire outfit into that fitting for going a jog in the streets.

The place where I like to call as my home isn't all that fancy or luxurious, its just a normal modern 2-storey house just like most of the houses in the neighbourhood.

I bought this house in this peaceful neighbourhood using my parent's life insurance, my mother and father died on a train accident while going to work, the train suddenly went off rail and began to crash into the house and buildings nearby the area.

The accident of course, took the life of my beloved parents.

Once I saw the accident report, I was devastated...

What were the odds of it happening on my birthday? It was like fate was playing a sick joke in my life.

The life insurance money my parent's left me was enough for me to live alone peacefully and continue my education till I graduated, and get a suitable and comfortable job in the society.

However, I beg to differ. I chose to buy a 2-storey house in this nice and quiet neighbourhood, well to be fair, it was a rural neighbourhood so its kind of a given for it to be nice and peaceful.

I dropped out of University and tried to live a peaceful slow life in this neighbourhood.

But of course, I have my own hobbies that I very much love. I started to like agriculture and started to make a mini farm of mine in my backyard, it was pretty relaxing if I say so myself. I started watching anime and reading mangas, I bought some mangas off online stores, and watched anime on crunchyroll, my pride prevents me from watching at pirate sites.

I also started playing games, I played so many games that I don't remember some of them, well I do remember some of the popular ones like the Assassins Creed franchise.

I recently got into the apocalypse genre of games and animes, such as the fallout franchise and highschool of the dead.

I am quite fond of imagining myself surviving in a zombie apocalypse or a nuclear apocalypse, especially zombie apocalypse.

I watched a movie called Kingdom, it was a movie set in an ancient dynasty, basically it was a zombie apocalypse movie but in an ancient dynasty era, its pretty impressive to see them hold off the zombies using cold weapons.

'Huh? now that I think about it... People in that movie can hold off against zombie hordes by using swords, bows, etc... But why is it that when it comes to the modern era where firearms and massive weapons of mass destruction exist... They get overwhelmed with zombies when they can literally shoot them at a distance and not get bitten? I guess I'll take that as the panicking civilians' fault.'

Although I've got my hobbies to support me and help me not have a mental breakdown from loneliness, I still have yet to find a girlfriend since birth...

I do try to flirt with a girl but it always somehow fails, sometimes they also say something when they reject me, something along the lines of "I don't date playboys," I don't get it... Just because I look a bit handsome doesn't mean im a playboy, heck I've still got my V-Card intact my whole life.

'There's no use thinking about it, but I really do think I need a girlfriend now, im already 20 years old! im at the prime of my life! but im still alone my whole life. Those anime girls in the animes that I've watched were undoubtedly better than real life girls though.'

"Ah..... Home sweet home! all that light exercise made my throat dry, i need to drink some water first and maybe take a rest for 20 minutes before watering my crops," I then went to the kitchen refrigerator to get water.

The new announcement utterly ignited the Players' dormant passion, allowing them to regain their excitement after having their spirits slightly dampened by Nightcry's vileness.
In fact, after the Players had seen the list of rewards offered in the Personal Prize Pool, all of them promptly teleported to Tunaya from different places, dropping whatever daily quests they were doing. Anyone else would have presumed from their looks of teeth-gritting resolve that they were Tunaya locals who would put their lives on their line for their city—leaving even the wood elves of Trinia dumbstruck…
Other Players who for whatever reason were unable to return for the time being—such as Zonyan's party who was farming good reputation with the Long-Ears—were lamenting about bad timing, unable to hold back the thought of killing themselves so that they could return to town.
Besides, Players who had fallen in the battle against Nightcry certainly didn't hesitate to use their daily single auto-revival to join in the wild rejoicing of the other Players.
Hence, in just a dozen minutes, the citizens of Tunaya had the distinct sense that there were suddenly a bunch of people who had a different air about them in the city with them.
The Brilliant White Church and the Temple of Glory were the major religions here and as such could hardly deceive their believers when something happened. With the other churches aiding in repelling the undead onslaught after receiving news, most citizens of Tunaya were already aware that powerful monsters were coming—monsters that neither the Brilliant White Church nor the Temple of Glory could win against.
Fear and anxiety shrouded all of Tunaya, driving the oppressiveness in the town's atmosphere to its very limit.
And yet, it was under such circumstances that these weird people had arrived out of nowhere, all of them overflowing with mysterious enthusiasm and with 'I have no idea where I am or why the enemy is coming here, but I'm going to split their heads here—an ally's head as well, if there is the chance!' written all over their faces.
If they weren't actually few in numbers at just a little over two hundred (not counting Players who couldn't make it in time or newbies uninterested or not quite knowing what an Event is), the backdrop of the city would have been altered entirely.
It was truly weird when one thought about it—the Players were merely preparing for the Event, and yet it was now more bustling here than feast or festivals.
Perhaps Events were festivals in the truest sense in the Players' perspectives.
"Ooooh! This style of rewarding is really too interesting! As expected of the God of Games—there is a surprise every time!" Joe was exclaiming excitedly and tapping his large pectoral muscles after Edward patiently explained to him about the Event's mechanics. "Well, what are we waiting for? Let's hurry off to Sotimi to farm some undead!"
Edward shook his head, having carefully studied the mechanics.
"We're waiting for Gou Dan to be revived… even if it looks like the rewards are given on a first-come first-served basis, even if Players farming Night of the Vengeful Dead could draw from the prize pool early on, that's not what it actually is all about. The undead in Sotimi are summed up with points, and the list of rewards follows the rule that 'killing powerful undead earns more points'. In fact, killing a hundred human zombies might not earn as many points as killing a zombie ork."
In response, Joe immediately opened the list of rewards that corresponded to the RIP points earned. He stared at the chunks of text and pulled a long face, acting as if he understood while nodding pensively.
"Powerful undead would be hiding deeper in the enemy's ranks. Therefore, the first ones that would be fighting are those that yield the lowers RIP points, and it's just not worth spending any time on them!" Edward disregarded whether Joe got the idea, and continued as if he was tidying his own thoughts. "But the Zombie Dragon is different! Its totally HP is fixed—so, shaving off one percent from its HP means that the others would have one percent less contribution! And by the same principle, we would earn less if others hit it more, not to mention that the rewards list make it clearly that fighting the Zombie Dragon pays more than fighting at Sotimi!"
"As for the lottery, everyone would get the same rewards from the Personal Prize Pool anyway, whereas anyone could know immediately that the Golden Global Prize Pool which comes after the other two prize pool has the best rewards! It'll be fine even if we let the others have the Bronze and Silver Prize Pools before that!"
At that, Edward had decided the strategy his party would follow. "That is why we are going to join the campaign against the Zombie Dragon, and then farm the Night of the Vengeful Dead if we still have the time later on!"

Eleena remained silent for a while, before resolutely lifting her head and fixing her gaze on Xi Wei. "Then I am willing to become a believer of the God of Games!"
"Belief isn't something to only be spoken by mouth. Close your eyes and envision His name in your mind, and feel His power with your heart," he said solemnly.
"O Master of Games, grant us new life!"

Takumi decided to clean his body and enter the bath. His lower body was sticky due to the intense fuck session that just happened many times in a short period of time. You could even say he got in a little exercise due to the amount of sweat came out of it.
In addition to that, Yumi and Hiromi also join. But the bathtub was only able to fit one person so they were left to sit on the floor.
The reason they came was not to clean their body but to examine them closer. Observing the two bodies, he told them to clean themselves while he watched.
"Except for a scar on her stomach, Hiromi's body is flawless. Yumi's too is amazing. But it's pretty pale."
He figured that the reason she was so pale was because blood wasn't pumping around her body. He was worried that one day they would become rotten and start to smell. But luckily there weren't any open wounds.
"I wonder if they'll heal if they get hurt."
However his thought was distracted by a low growl from his stomach.
He decided to eat immediately. While the electricity still ran. He used the microwave to heat some frozen food. After all, when the electricity runs out, the frozen food will start to go bad.
"What am I supposed to do with the two of you?"
The image of a typical zombie in movies and games attending to their daily needs had never been shown. In movies and games they only ate humans. Now he's going to live with two zombies, not a pet cat or dog.
"The janitor seemed to be eating a corpse. I wonder if it was because of hunger..?"
Takumi took out the frozen food that is already warm and split it between the three of them.
"If they're hungry, they'll probably eat."
He didn't know how the metabolism of a zombie works. However the scene of the girls eating the food surprised him.
"Does it mean from now on I have to keep them well fed?"
Seeing how they could eat normally, Takumi began to think,
"I need to feed them, but..."
Takumi was in a dilemma. His food will run out faster. He wanted to keep the girls mainly to be used as sexual partners but he also still needed to experiment with them. They also may be useful later on. It's not a good idea to abandon them now.
"Well, if they keep eating, won't their stomach be full eventually since they can't digest it?"
A thought of them randomly throwing up food near him in the future scared him.
"Seeing them eating now, if there's a corpse in front of me I wonder if they will change."
Takumi didn't stay any longer and reorganized things. He secured food and water, put them in one box, maybe if they decide to leave the apartment he will be able to carry it with him. He turned on the radio and TV however the same recorded emergency news as the one that aired. On the net it's even worse. They are all spamming their death's will.
The second night of the apocalypse came. Takumi is now dressed in all black to blend in with the darkness. He wanted to study zombie habits when the night came. It is still unknown whether they will be normal or not, if they still obeyed him or not.
"They said the zombie at night are more aggressive. I have to find out if they still obey my words or not."
He wantedt to bring weapons but right now he only had kitchen knives and pans.
"I'll just run if it gets bad."
Takumi went out but there wasn't any signs of zombies.
"This is terrible."
When he reached the road, he gasped involuntarily. As far as he can see, dead bodies were lying down and scattered. People that have been eaten in half. Broken glasses and pool of blood. He arrived at the convenience store and saw two zombies moving around. It seemed that they didn't notice him.
"To think that it was only the second day."
Takumi walked in the shadow avoiding the street lamps. He met a middle aged zombie and told the zombie per his instructions to "go away". After a split second, the middle aged zombie left Takumi. He was glad to see that his power to command zombies still worked at night!
"We arrived."
It was a perfectural elementary school building. This place is the emergency shelter for this area. If some disaster were to happen, this would be the evacuation spot. If there's a human refugee camp this is going to be the place.
There's no light coming out. There's no sign of people there.
"Maybe it's to avoid the zombies attention."
Afterall he wouldn't know if he didn't check. The best place to check is the gymnasium. However in the yard he already saw a small figure walking. It was a small boy zombie. Several children also came there. When one of them saw Takumi, they started to run to him at an outstanding pace. Takumi immediately bolted out of that horror scene.
"This is hell."
The sight of lifeless children chasing him was burned in his mind. At that time, two shadowy figures arrived at his side. They wear gym suits and their name tag is still clear. "5th grade Hayami Rika" and "5th grade Fujishima Yayoi".

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG) is an online multiplayer battle royale gamedeveloped and published by PUBG Corporation, a subsidiary of South Korean video game company Bluehole. The game is based on previous mods that were created by Brendan "PlayerUnknown" Greene for other games using the film Battle Royale for inspiration, and expanded into a standalone game under Greene's creative direction. In the game, up to one hundred players parachute onto an island and scavenge for weapons and equipment to kill others while avoiding getting killed themselves. The available safe area of the game's map decreases in size over time, directing surviving players into tighter areas to force encounters. The last player or team standing wins the round.

Lead designer Brendan Greene, better known by his online handle PlayerUnknown, had previously created the ARMA 2 mod DayZ: Battle Royale, an offshoot of popular mod DayZ, and inspired by the 2000 Japanese film Battle Royale.[9][10] At the time he created DayZ: Battle Royale, around 2013, Irish-born Greene had been living in Brazil for a few years as a photographer, graphic designer, and web designer, and played video games such as Delta Force: Black Hawk Down and America's Army.[11][12] The DayZ mod caught his interest, both as a realistic military simulation and its open-ended gameplay, and started playing around with a custom server, learning programming as he went along.[11]Greene found most multiplayer first-person shooters too repetitive, considering maps small and easy to memorize. He wanted to create something with more random aspects so that players would not know what to expect, creating a high degree of replayability; this was done by creating vastly larger maps that could not be easily memorized, and using random item placement across it.[13] Greene was also inspired by an online competition for DayZ called Survivor GameZ, which featured a number of Twitch.tv and YouTube streamersfighting until only a few were left; as he was not a streamer himself, Greene wanted to create a similar game mode that anyone could play.[13] His initial efforts on this mod were more inspired by The Hunger Gamesnovels, where players would try to vie for stockpiles of weapons at a central location, but moved away from this partially to give players a better chance at survival by spreading weapons around, and also to avoid copyright issues with the novels.[10] In taking inspiration from the Battle Royale film, Greene had wanted to use square safe areas, but his inexperience in coding led him to use circular safe areas instead, which persisted to Battlegrounds.[10]

When DayZ became its own standalone title, interest in his ARMA 2 version of the Battle Royale mod trailed off, and Greene transitioned development of the mod to ARMA 3.[11] Sony Online Entertainment (now the Daybreak Game Company) had become interested in Greene's work, and brought him on as a consultant to develop on H1Z1, licensing the battle royale idea from him.[11] In February 2016, Sony Online split H1Z1 into two separate games, the survival mode H1Z1: Just Survive, and the battle royale-like H1Z1: King of the Kill, around the same time that Greene's consultation period was over.[14]

Separately, the Seoul-based studio Ginno Games, led by Chang-han Kim and who developed massively multiplayer online games (MMOs) for personal computers, was acquired and renamed Bluehole Ginno Games by Bluehole in January 2015, a major South Korean publisher of MMOs and mobile games.[15][16] Kim recognized that producing a successful game in South Korea generally meant it would be published globally, and wanted to use his team to create a successful title for personal computers that followed the same model as other mobile games published by Bluehole. He had already been excited about making a type of battle royale game after he had played DayZ, in part that the format had not caught on in Korea. He also wanted to make this through an early accessmodel and have a very limited development schedule to get the game out as quickly as possible, while treating the product as a "games as a service" model to be able to support it for many years.[15] In researching what had been done, he came across Greene's mods and reached out to him.[15] In July 2017, Bluehole partnered with social media platform Facebook to provide exclusive streaming content to Facebook's gaming channels, as part of their pushing to provide more gaming content for its users.[17]

Around the same time that Greene left Sony Online, Kim contacted and offered him the opportunity to work on a new battle royale concept. Within a week, Greene flew out to Bluehole's headquarters in Korea to discuss the options, and a few weeks later, became the creative director of Bluehole. He moved to South Korea to oversee development.[13]According to Greene, this was the first time a Korean game studio had brought aboard a foreigner for a creative director role, and while a risk, he says that his relationship with Bluehole's management is strong, allowing Greene's team to work autonomously with minimal oversight.[6] The game's main musical theme was composed by Tom Salta, who was personally selected by Green as he and the team were looking for an "orchestral electronic hybrid theme" that would give players a "huge build-up", keeping them "resolutely determined" until a match starts.[18]

Development began in early 2016 and was publicly announced that June, with plans to have the game ready within a year.[19][20] Kim served as executive producer for the game.[13]Bluehole started with a team of about 35 developers supporting Greene's work, but had expanded to 70 by June 2017.[21] Greene stated that many of these developers were voluntarily putting in longer work hours into the game due to their dedication to the project, and not by any mandate from himself or Bluehole's management.[13][22] In addition to Bluehole, Greene also credits Bohemia Interactive, the developers of ARMA and DayZ, for support with motion capture animations via their Prague studio.[22][21]

With the rapid growth of interest in the game, Bluehole spun out the entire development for Battlegrounds into Bluehole Ginno Games in September 2017, which was renamed PUBG Corporation with Kim as its chief executive officer. PUBG Corporation continued the development of the game and its marketing and growth, opening an office in the United States with plans for future ones in Europe and Japan.[23] In August 2018, PUBG Corporation launched the "Fix PUBG" campaign, acknowledging that that game by then still had several lingering bugs and other performance issues.[24] The campaign finished in November, with PUBG Corporation calling it a success as everything listed had been implemented by then.[25]

Design

Battlegrounds represents the standalone version of what Greene believes is the "final version" of the battle royale concept, incorporating the elements he had designed in previous iterations.[6][26] Faster development was possible with the game engine Unreal Engine 4, compared with ARMA and H1Z1, which were built with proprietary game engines. Greene acknowledged that implementing the size of the maps in Battlegrounds has been one of the challenges with working with Unreal, which was not designed with such maps in mind.[6][11] The game was designed as a mix between the realistic simulation of ARMA 3 and the arcade-like action focus and player accessibility of H1Z1.[5][13]

Based on Greene's experience with the genre, an island with many terrain features was picked as the first map, known as "Erangel".[10]The map design scope was to offer players many possible options for strategic and unique gameplay.[4] Some buildings and structures were designed to depict the style of the brutalist architecture of the Soviet Unionduring the 1950s. The developer team playtested architecture features and random item placement systems, looking at both how close-quarters encounters went, and for open terrain areas.[4] The goal was to optimize the right distribution and placement of weapons and gear across the map, to encourage players to make strategic decisions about how to proceed in the game without overly penalizing players who may not find weapons within the first few minutes of a round.[6]During early access, additional maps were planned, such as one set on a fictional island in the Adriatic Sea that included snow-covered Yugoslavian territories.[27][21] Greene stated that he thought the Erangel map felt disjointed despite meeting their goals for gameplay, and sought to create more unified ideas with future maps.[10]

The freefall from an airplane at the start of each match was a new feature for the genre, to encourage strategy between staying with the pack of players or seeking out one's own route for a better chance at finding good loot.[6] With the added parachute drop, Greene considered that Battlegrounds had three distinct subgames: the airdrop during which one must quickly figure out the best time to jump and where to land in relationship to the other players, the loot game of knowing where and how to gather the best possible equipment, and the combat game with other players.[28] Players who win a match are greeted with the phrase "winner winner chicken dinner", an idiom that Greene had used in his prior battle royale games and kept in Battlegrounds, which itself had origins as early as the Great Depression.[29]

Features that Greene anticipates adding include custom games and moddingsupport.[6][13] He considered modding support an essential part of the full release as, just as he had his start with mods, he wants to enable others to create variations on his game so that he can "find the next PlayerUnknown".[30] Greene also wants to incorporate the game with streaming services like Twitch.tv that would enable replays or other features amenable to treating Battlegrounds as an esport.[6][13] Greene had anticipated that Battlegrounds would develop into an esport, and this was an ultimate end goal for his development, but he wanted to let the nature of how it would play out as an esport grow naturally with the player community.[12] He also plans to introduce microtransactions to allow players to use real-world funds to purchase loot crates that provide randomly-selected cosmetic items, also known as "skins", which they can trade with other players; while Greene recognizes the issue with skin gambling, he believes that Valve has put safeguards in place to support a "skin economy" that will provide further revenue for them without concerns over gambling.[7] However, by November 2017, gray market skin gambling sites began to appear, using Battlegrounds cosmetics as virtual currency.[31] Following controversy over the use of loot boxes to offer "pay-to-win" items in other games in November 2017, the PUBG Corporation affirmed that while they will continue to add new cosmetic items rewarded by in-game crate purchases, they "will never add anything that affects the gameplay".[32] In May 2018, PUBG Corporation disabled the ability to trade skins on the Steam Marketplace as they found that players were still abusing the system by selling them for monetary value through unofficial third-party platforms.[33]

While in early access, Bluehole offered an early preview of the system by offering time-limited crates that could be purchased during the first Battlegrounds Invitations tournament during Gamescom in August 2017, with the sales from these contributing to the prize pool. Among loot from these crates are special outfits inspired by the Battle Royalemovie.[34] Greene anticipates adding a campaign mode with co-operative player support, though there would be "no serious lore" crafted for the narrative, comparing this to similar modes in Watch Dogs.[35]

The game, while in early access, has already received alternate gameplay modes created by players, determined by unenforceable rules that players agree to abide by, that have been popular with streamers. This was aided by a quiet release of custom server support to a number of influential streamers which subsequently made it into public release.[22] In one case, "Zombie Mode", all but four players pretend to be zombies, who may sometimes distinguish themselves by removing all clothing and are limited only to collecting melee weapons and consumable items, and must rush to attack the other four players, who are able to collect all gear and attempt to outrun and defeat the zombies.[36] Inspired by this mode, Greene announced plans to introduce an official zombie-based gameplay mode based on this into Battlegrounds.[37]Whereas most of the rest of the team continued to develop the core gameplay and maps, Greene is taking on the zombie mode as a near solo project, only using the assistance of the lead animator to help with the zombie animations.[21] Greene sees Battlegrounds as a platform, and would like to see more custom game types and mods developed by players for it.[11] Greene identified that some mods that he also previously worked on from ARMA 3 may become part of the Battlegrounds platform.[11]

To prevent in-game cheating, the game uses the "BattlEye" anti-cheating software, which had permanently banned over 13 million players in total by October 2018.[38][39]BattlEye indicated that 99% of all cheating software for the game was developed in China.[40
