I went back through and filled in the page in the list of relatives I had gotten from Jenkins and their Throne number.  Then I compared the pictures in the files of relatives with the  person who signed in.  I put a check in the 'Verified' column if so.

The people who put 'Employee' or 'Friend' or had unintelligible handwriting, I skipped that record and went on to the next one.  About midnight, I finished.  I needed the employee file for Saginaw Industries...  Which was an insane idea.  I had made a mistake...  Avery could have come disguised as an obscure relative.  No telling what Avery looked like nowadays.

Something BITSY had done...  I struggled to bring it to mind...  I had been in the bookstore and making the PDF's...  BITSY had...  I could not remember...  I pulled up the directory of the emails...   I sorted by Name of Sender...  Found BITSY... twice...  The first email on the list was the two video files that showed who had signed in...  The second was... the Subject said, 'DNA tests'.  I  found the PDF and the thing had 1023 pages.  BITSY had gotten at least 20 of my friends to give out water to the guests in marked bottles that had builtin straws.  Afterwards, they had gathered up the  trash and extracted the bottles.  The trick was that as my friends gave out a bottle, they surreptitiously made a photo of the person with the bottle... and the number on the bottle was shown in the photo.   In the notes, BITSY said that they had even gotten the catering staff...  I put my head in my hands and groaned.  Who would wear gloves to a summer event in Houston in June?...  Answer, they had  to, because they were
catering staff.

I rummaged through the box and found the printout of the second BITSY file and pulled out all the service staff...  Jenkins and the maids and drivers from the house were there...  I set the photos aside of all the service staff... then I noticed a security guy with gloves on.

An epiphany filled my whole body...  Avery did not have to be an accountant in my mother's firm.  All he had to be was a security guy who noticed that my mother brought in 120 tons of sugar per week and sold it for a profit.

I sat back and stared at the picture.  The man looked to be about the right age.  The gloves were... cotton.  White cotton gloves... the type that people with a skin disease wore.

I must have sat there until almost 6am thinking of all the possibilities.  I ran all these scenarios through my head of how to capture Avery.  All of them seemed to take too long and ended with Avery having enough time to talk his way out or they were too short in which case Avery got away because he had an escape route I knew nothing about.  Each of them seemed to leave Avery alive... able to come back and attack me at some future date.

I looked at all the stuff on the floor and I sighed.  I walked into the master bedroom and found the three of them in the super-king-sized bed.  I went into the bathroom and did my business, then I took a long shower.  When I came out, I washed the dye out of my hair.  I did not apply makeup.

I woke them and said, "I have to leave right now. I have found who I think is Avery. If I can just get him off the board, then we can deal with the druggies. Try to stay here all day... People, we now enter the endgame. I think I know all the players. I am pretty sure I got the rules right in my head. Now all I need to do is sweep Avery and the druggies from the board and move on to the real Game of Thrones." On the way out, I snagged my laptop and the mad money pouch and three burner phones.

I mused as I drove north that I had thought 50 cellphones was way too many.  Before this was over, I might have to buy some more.

I found a Starbucks with a WiFi and settled in to do a lot of work.  First I checked my gmail account.  Duke had been very busy.

He had acquired the tagging kit from Carl King.  His comment was that the thing looked too weird to be real.  I had to agree with him.  The first time I saw it, I had not believed it either.  I gave him a list of dead drops.  We would be using prepared lockers.  In my gamer period, we had gone around and modified about ten lockers in the city.  One of them should still be in operating order.

The procedure was that he walked in, put the device at the back of the locker, paid the fee and took the key.  I would come in and open the locker on the other side of the bank, push a button, open a door between the two lockers and pick up the package.  Most likely some of those lockers would have been replaced or removed in the last few years,... but not all.

Duke had also gotten me the names of all the people in the torturer's warehouse... and their records.  Duke had gone out of his way to document the torturer.  The guy, born Jorge Latanza, had been used by way too many governments around the world,... because he got results.  He...  REALLY liked his work... too much.  He had been arrested in the U.S. three times.  Duke had helpfully pulled the mug shots of the arrests in Los Angeles, Chicago and New York City.  Each time the State Department or the CIA or in the last case, Homeland Security had gotten the charges quashed...  Interesting.

The rest of the A-Team didn't stand out.  Each was a professional.  Each could do his job well, but they were in it for the money.  They were not driven like the torturer.

Then there was the Colombian drug lord, Pepe Leticia.  He had not visited the warehouse, but he was in communications with the A-Team.  Duke discovered that the guy was living in the penthouse suite of the Antigua Hotel in downtown Houston... bold as brass.  Duke had been able to get quite a bit of the email from Pepe to his friends back in Colombia.  I read through the Spanish.  The wording was becoming heated.  His partners were NOT happy about the loss of the ton of cocaine.  They were particularly unhappy  about the loss of the 20 tons of cocaine...  In short they had not been informed that the shipment had not gone through.  Pepe was saying that he was days from getting the drugs back, so no need to worry...  Other email to his subordinates indicated that Pepe was considering settling in the U.S. rather than going home.  Everyone was wondering how I was getting away with the shit I was getting away with...  The killings of 25 of my relatives was scaring the folks back home.  They felt that Pepe had  lost control of Jorge.  They wanted Jorge and his team killed and dumped close to a police station to take the heat off the cartel...  Ah...  The cartel was getting heat from their enablers in the Colombian government.  They wanted to write off the whole operation.  The sooner the better.

Then a figurative bomb blew up in my face...  Pepe Leticia was father to Felipe and Felicia Leticia.  During the school presidential race of the year before, Felicia Leticia swore that I had gone to bed with her.  Felipe was one of my friends.  He had come to visit me about this affront to family honor.  Felipe went to the hospital after the beating I gave him.  It had taken three months before he believed me that it was a political dirty trick.  He had been at Laurie's party and had been very happy to be on the list of people who would help me...  In short, I had been sending email to the enemy without knowing it.

I had to hand it to Avery.  This connection was kind of obscure, but once the police had started tearing my life apart they would surely have made the connection.  Avery had chosen the Laurentia Cartel to approach because they had a connection to me and thus to my father.  I was tempted to contact ol' Filipe, but I decided that I needed some more information...  Like, was I going to have to run from Felipe if his father died at my hands accidentally?

The next email from Duke gave me the time and departure date for the forensic accountant.  Today...  Crap...  Then Duke right then sent email saying that he would get the tagger kit to me ASAP.  I checked the time.  The guy left at 5pm.  He should be at the airport at between 2pm and 3pm.  It was now, 10am...  Just doable.  I sent email to Duke asking him to proceed.  He acknowledged.  I sat and waited.

I logged into the server at my house and sent email to my list telling everyone how much help the photographs had been.  I singled out BITSY for effusive praise for her attack on the problem.  Then I said that it was going to take a week or so to process all the photos.  I sent private email using a yahoo account I made just for that email.  I told BITSY to hold onto the plastic bottles until I personally came by.  If anyone came without me, call 911 and hope for the best.  I had some plans for those bottles.

I knew that all the email that was being generated by my server was being read.  If the police went by and saw BITSY, then they would have all 1023 bottles tested maybe.  Waste of time and money, but it would give them something to do.

What boggled my mind was that the torturer had not grabbed one of my friends to force me to show up.  Maybe my attitude toward Wesley had convinced him that since I would not reveal myself for a relative, a friend was just SOL...  No telling what ol' Jorge was thinking.

I closed up and moved to a McDonalds... then to another book store... then a strange restaurant for lunch... then Duke got back to me.  The kit was in drop number 5.

I drove to a parking lot next to the gym where the lockers were and parked.  Then I wandered down to the gym, found the locker on the other side of the one with kit and discovered that the thing was in use...  No worries...  I pulled out the master key and opened the locker.  I pushed the junk that was there out of the way and pressed the button.  I pulled out the tagger kit from the other locker along with a picture of the accountant.  I locked the locker behind me.

In my car, I reviewed what I had to do.  I moved the injector and the tags to the party bag I had bought at the book store.  I drove to the airport.  At the last moment I realized that were I to go through security they would identify me as Taegan Shrike.  I knew what the guy looked like, but I was unsure what exactly to do to get the tagger into his inside arm.  I settled on standing close to the line where the tickets for Bogota would be verified.

I put the injector on my arm.  Anyone looking at it would see a complicated mechanical pencil.  I mean the thing curled around my arm like a snake.  I ejected the lead in the pencil.  I loaded the injector with the tiny tagger which was the width of a lead for a mechanical pencil.  There was a pump disguised as an ornament at the end of the pencil.  I pressed it three times.  I assumed that would give the thing enough umph to shoot the tagger into the guy's arm...  I mean, this was an elaborate air pistol.

After an eternity, the guy arrived.  Thank God he had on short sleeves instead of a coat.  I dropped a roll of duct tape and seeming to run after the thing right up to the guy.  I bumped into him, stabbed him on the inside of his left arm with the point of the mechanical pencil and discharged the injector.  I picked up the duct tape without saying a word.  The guy was rubbing his arm.  I went back to where I had been and stood there as before.  After a while, I put away the injector and pulled out the data dumper.  I pressed a button and a green light flickered then became solid green.  I attached it to my laptop, brought up some software and opened a file from the tagger.  The GPS tagger worked.  I sighed a sigh of relief.  I pulled my cell and made out like I had gotten a call...  Then I packed up everything and went back to my van and drove back to the rental.

I lounged in the pool for the rest of the day doing nothing much except napping.

In the story, Teagan Shrike turns eighteen the summer before his senior year in high school. From one day to the next, he goes from heir apparent to a fortune to a fugitive from two drug cartels, the police and a shadowy relative who wants the billion dollar job badly enough to kill him for it. Teagan must make a series of life and death decisions. He must also decide whether he wants to marry the 'correct' girl and take up his position as head of a family of inbred, wealthy and deadly monsters in human form.

That morning Jasper, Scarlet, and Alex turned up at school together and it became the hottest topic on campus. By noon, the trio became dubbed as the P.D.F. as a short for Prince, Doll, and Freak.

The rumours reached Scarlet's ears and she wondered why Jasper got the Freak title. She would have gladly claimed it for herself. It must be the new hairstyle that Mr Beyonce gave her that got her the Doll title.

The attention they got everywhere disrupted classes so much that the teachers allowed the trio to go for a self-study session in the library. Scarlet did a little dance in her head to celebrate ditching boring lessons. The teacher said that as long as they kept their grades up, the school would not take their attendance into consideration. The power of fame and influence was truly amazing.

This time, Venessa and Sadiya weren't as surprised when the three little school superstars made their appearance while classes were still in session. apparently, the balding school principal passed down a chain of command to treat them like precious royalty.

"Would you like to have a private room? I think we're able to block the room permanently for your use if you'd like. Do you have any preference?" the young librarian asked.

Alex blinked and Jasper shrugged, leaving the decision entirely in Scarlet's hands. Scarlet thought for a while. The elementary section of the library was on the first level and had no privacy with so many people walking in and out. Fortunately, the higher floors of the library were restricted to the bigger kids who were in college. However, they couldn't access it without a card. The atmosphere there was more silent and better for studying with many small private rooms but it didn't come with computers.

"Grandma... are we able to book any room in the library? Even those on the upper floors?"

Grandma Sadiya smiled. "Of course. We've readied your passes to. Also, I thought that you might require a private room with a computer for research purposes. Can I recommend a room that I think you would like?"

Grandma Sadiya's eyes were shining and Scarlet raised a brow. Scarlet didn't think that such a room existed in the library. Still, she wouldn't turn it down if such a room existed.

"We have a librarian office at the back but Venessa and I hardly use it. It's where returned books are shelved and new books are kept for barcoding before being introduced to the system. It's also the only place that has a side door exit to the toilet with a pantry that you can have snacks in."

"Sounds like a good deal," Scarlet admitted. "Is that even allowed?"

Sadiya rolled her eyes and snorted. "I'm the head librarian. If anyone has an issue they can take it up with me... I'll shove my foot so far up thei-"

"Don't say such things! The baby can hear you!" Venessa chided and the head librarian piped down again while grumbling.

Scarlet snickered while Alex looked scandalised by Grandma Sadiya's foul language. The matter was quickly settled and all three children were given special access cards before they were shown to the office. Scarlet had some difficulty reaching the card scanner and had to jump to tap the card. Alex thought that it was adorable but kept the comment to herself. Jasper said something about Scarlet's size and was given a merciless kick to the shin. She didn't want to mess with the school Doll no matter how cute she thought Scarlet was.

After getting cosy with milo and biscuits, the trio was finally given some privacy. Scarlet took five minutes to clean the plate off food while the ancient-looking bulky computer whirred to life. It was very slow, but it did the job. Scarlet tapped her fingers impatiently while the screen loaded and Alex wondered what the fuss was all about. Jasper didn't care so much and started flipping through a new book he picked out from the neatly stacked cardboard boxes.

A few minutes later after many rapid clicks and tapping on the keyboard, Scarlet let out a triumph cry.

"Ok, now we can commence our secret meeting. In today's meeting, we shall decide on a team name and the plan to become independent financially and socially. For starters, I will let you know who I truly am."

Jasper put the book down, interested in what the odd girl had to say for herself. Alex was confused but went with the flow. Scarlet showed them a very dull looking weblog page and signed in. neither of them recognised what that was but from the background stats, Scarlet had a few hundred subscribers. That was a rather good pool of followers for someone so young. They were more surprised when Scarlet admitted that she hasn't started the Human Observation Journal too long ago.

"Yes, it is I - Pirate S. the captain of this blog. As you can see, I think I have a flair for writing so the first part of the Grand Plan towards freedom would be to publish a book because books make a lot of money right?"

Jasper and Alex shared a look. Was Scarlet serious?

"I don't know how to write books, I can't even do a proper essay..." Jasper admitted. While he excelled without effort for Math and Science, the same could not be said for language.

Alex shook her head when Scarlet looked at her. "I don't know anything about writing books. Ah! I could help you draw the cover if you'd like. I've been secretly watching videos about drawing using a software and I find it fascinating."

"We only have one computer here and it isn't going to work very well for drawing," Jasper pointed out.

Alex smiled brightly. "Don't worry about it, I'll just ask for a laptop from my father. He should have many spares lying around in the company, it shouldn't be difficult for him to get a hold of one for me."

Jasper and Scarlet looked at Alex with raised brows although the boy's eyebrows were hidden beneath his bangs. For all the shortcomings Alex had, being rich was probably a redeeming feature in a group like theirs.

"That's actually going to help us a lot... thank you Alex!" Scarlet smiled plastically but Alex thought it was the sincerest thing in the world and blurted out that they should feel free to request more things from her if she could be of any help.

"How about packed meals?" Jasper suggested. "That way we won't need to waste time queuing in the cafeteria for food. I don't think the librarians will mind if we eat there as long as we don't make too much of a mess..."

Scarlet took out a foolscap pad and pencil case from her bag. She wrote in big letters at the top of the page things that they required. Jasper and Alex threw in ideas that seemed great at first but a little more ridiculous after ten minutes when Alex suggested bringing a spare luxurious Italian leather sofa from one of her guest rooms for sitting comfort.

"Ok, let's take it slow and stop for now... we're only starting to make a plan so that I can convince your mother. Let's start thinking about the Team name so that we can publish the book."

"I'm not going to be of much help here," Jasper pointed out and Scarlet shook her head before pointing the pencil in his direction. "You're going to help us with research and tutor us before the exams. Although we're given special privileges, I don't think Mrs Wilde will be pleased if it starts affecting our grades."

The boy shrugged. "I guess I can do that then. How about using the name the school gave us? P.D.F.?"

Scarlet thought about it and frowned. "Sounds too geeky. besides, Prince, Doll & Freak sounds like a very random author name. Nobody will take the story seriously..."

"What is the story you're going to write?" Alex asked.

Scarlet grinned. "I'm going to write about a super-being who lost his memories and goes on an adventure to find out who he truly is. I haven't decided on the title yet..."

"I still think I like P.D.F. because it represents the three of us... how about keeping it but changing the initials to something like Pretty Dancing Fairy?"

Scarlet cringed internally at Alex's naming sense and Jasper coughed to disguise his laugh. That kind of name with the storyline didn't match.

"I think we need something more suited for the story's genre... how about something like Permanent Discovery Fantasy?"

Scarlet frowned. "Sounds too much of a mouthful. Permanent Fantasy?"

Alex shook her head. "We don't want this to just be a fantasy, do we? Permanent... Freedom?"

While it sounded close to what they wanted, Permanent Freedom sounded odd. "Freedom always comes at a cost," Jasper reminded them.

"Freedom and cost huh..." Scarlet sighed and reflected on the events that happened yesterday. While the other two children were thinking hard, an idea hit Alex hard and she clapped her hands with excitement.

"Frost! It's short for the phrase 'Freedom comes at a cost'! Permanent Frost, how does that sound now? It's like our own secret code too..."

Jasper patted Alex's head. "That's a good one, I like it. What about you?" he asked Scarlet who was nodding too.

"It's actually really good. Who knew that you had it in you?"

Alex frowned. "What's that supposed to mean?"

"Nothing," came the innocent reply and Scarlet wrote down Permanent Frost on the paper.

Finally, they were truly a team.

At age 10, Scarlet Liu Xiu Wen was tested with a Mensa IQ of 156.

Spirit Curing Pet Clinic. 
Sun Xiaomeng was sitting alone in her office, contemplating with her chin rested on her hands. 
In front of her, the computer screen was displaying two documents: one was a PDF file in English about animal behaviorism, and the other one was a Word file where the cursor was blinking. It was the Chinese version of the PDF file which was translated by a translation software. 
On her right side, a pot of bracket plant on the windowsill was bathing in the soft autumn sunshine and growing healthily, bringing vigor to this quiet and simple office. 
Behind her was a customized bookshelf that almost covered the whole wall. The bookshelf was stuffed with all kinds of professional books. Voluminous books that were as thick as dictionaries were put on the bottom, regular academic books were placed on the top shelves where she could reach them by raising her hands, and in the prime position in the middle were the latest journals and magazines in Chinese and in English. If she was going to relocate her clinic in the future, it would take much effort to move this bookshelf alone. 
It was not accurate to say that she was in contemplation: she was absent-minded. Her brain was completely vacant, a status she enjoyed very much, because she could temporarily get away from her busy schedule in the clinic and her studies so that her brain could get a rest. 
Knock, knock! 
She was woken up from her vacant status by a knock on her office door. 
"Come in." She rubbed her palms and placed her warm palms on her cheeks so that her stiff face became softer. 
Wang Qian and Li Kun pushed the door open, but they didn't come in. They just stood at the door and said, "Sister Xiaomeng, we have cleaned everywhere else except your office. Would you like to check up our work?" 
Sun Xiaomeng didn't ask them to clean this office because her "patients’" medical records were placed on her desk, and she was afraid that they would mess them up. Besides, she was the only one who usually came in this office, so it was not dirty at all. 
"No, I won’t check. You can leave earlier if you have finished your work." She trusted them and was satisfied with their work. Cleaning for a clinic was heavy work, but they had done it really well. 
In the beginning, Sun Xiaomeng was really disgusted by their stupid talking, and for a time, she really wanted to tell them not to come to her clinic anymore. But later, she found that they were very responsible at work, and since they had experience working for a pet shop, they were also good at taking care of pets. Their stupid talking was dwarfed by their excellent work, so she gradually got used to their presence in her clinic. 
"Okay, we are leaving then." They said goodbye to Sun Xiaomeng and closed the door softly. 
They didn't leave the clinic right away. Instead, they went to the cashier and cozied up to Long Xian again. It was obvious that they quite liked the new nurse. Why? Probably because Long Xian was very patient and could tolerate their stupid talking, though in the eyes of Sun Xiaomeng, Long Xian was just being polite. 
After a while, their voices disappeared. They probably had left the clinic and went back  to the university for classes. 
Knock, knock! 
Someone was knocking at the door again. 
"Come in." 
Long Xian pushed open the door and stuck in her head, "Sister Xiaomeng, Wu Yue is here. I have brought her to the operating room." 
"Okay, I'll be there in a minute." 
Sun Xiaomeng checked the calendar on her computer, and pulled a medical records file from the cubbyholes on her desk. She put it under one arm, walked out of the office quickly, made a right turn and then arrived at the operating room. 
"Hello, Doctor, I’m here to trouble you again." 
In the operating room was a middle-aged woman holding a flight case. She was dressed up elegantly, wearing a beige woolen coat that fit her well and a pale blue scarf that suited her temperament. She seemed well-educated from her behaviors and the way she talked. 
"Madam Wu, you are punctual as always." Sun Xiaomeng smiled at her cordially. Wu Yue was her long-term client, and she had been visiting her clinic every day recently. 
"I am very sorry to trouble you every day," said Wu Yue very politely. 
"What are you talking about? I’m just doing my job." Sun Xiaomeng had a very good impression of Wu Yue, not only because of her temperament and the way she talked, but also because of her decision. 
Sun Xiaomeng looked out the window, "It's a nice day today, but according to the weather forecast, tomorrow will be windy with temperature drops. Please keep warm and don't catch a cold." 
"Really? Thanks for reminding me. I will put on more clothes tomorrow." Wu Yue smiled gently. 
"Also, please keep Little White warm," Sun Xiaomeng reminded her. 
"Yes, absolutely." Wu Yue put the flight case in her hands on the ground and opened the case. She held up a Pekingese dog from the case. 
The Pekingese dog gazed at Sun Xiaomeng with its black-and-white eyes open wide, sticking its tongue out fawningly towards Sun Xiaomeng. It seemed quite perky. 
"Hello, Little White, how are you?" Sun Xiaomeng rubbed its chin and it barked twice. Little White enjoyed when she got close to it. 
Little White was a normal Pekingese dog that was wearing a pair of special shorts for dogs on its butt—this was quite normal, because many dog owners would put such shorts on their pets for many different reasons. For example, when the dogs were on their menstrual periods, or when the owners didn’t want their dogs to be sterilized nor did they want their dogs to get pregnant, or when their dogs were sick... 
Sun Xiaomeng held up Little White to the operating table, and Wu Yue put her hands on its body and touched it softly to stop it from moving. Little White was lying with its stomach on the table without moving or barking. Little White was not like this the first time it was here - it tried to run away a couple of times after seeing all the strange-looking tools and the cold stainless-steel operative instruments. 
Sun Xiaomeng opened the file and looked at Little White’s case. Though she could almost recite what was in there, she read through the file seriously out of respect to Wu Yue. 
"Is Little White’s diet schedule and bowel movements normal?" She put on the disposable rubber gloves and started the regular inquiry as diagnosis. 
"Yes, I totally follow the diet standard made by you," answered Wu Yue earnestly. Sun Xiaomeng formulated nutritional meals with ingredients precise to the unit of gram according to Little White’s age and weight. Little White seemed to be in good spirits recently, and it was probably due to Sun Xiaomeng’s nutritional menu.
