Wang Xiaodong nodded his head and said, "I got this. Go and rest."

Lu Zhou pinched his eyebrows, shook his head, and stood up before he walked out of the computer room. 
Compared to his all-nighters during the summer, this was nothing. 
Lu Zhou could not remember how he got back to the dorms. He just remembered that he opened the door and without even taking his clothes off, he went to sleep. 
When he woke up, it was already dusk. 
Lu Zhou sat up in bed and rubbed his messy hair as he took out his phone from his pocket to take a look at the time.
He recalled that he got back to the dorm around six in the morning.
"I slept for twelve hours…"
The next time he could sleep would be after the competition.

No one knew his model thought process better than him. Therefore, this stage was easy to do. 
The next was the cumbersome process of proof and reasoning. This was the main part of the entire thesis. Although it did not take up too much space, it was the most time-consuming part to complete. 
The main reason was that not only did it involve mathematical modeling ideas, it also involved programming. 
Lu Zhou was comfortable with mathematics but he needed to communicate with the coder for the program part. 
Time slowly past by and the sun fell down and rose again. Once again, it shined across the horizon.
When the night was over, Lu Zhou had finished the last part of the question answering section.

Engineering Student's Frustration-It's No Fun:
For some students, it's their way of money while for others, it's their passion. Some take up engineering as a commitment to their parents, while some pursue it out of peer pressure and frustration. Many reasons are there for the students to choose Engineering as their career option. Choosing this path is quite an easy task, but working hard to make a successful career out of engineering is not everyone's cup of tea. A lot of engineering aspirants explore the actual meaning of engineering only when they start pursuing the path. 
There are nearly 5000-6000 engineering colleges in India, and there is not even a proper laboratory installed in more than 70% of them. A student, paying a fee of two-three lakhs per annum, is just getting frustration and a Degree which may or may not fetch him/her a job shortly. I need not tell you that in most cases, it doesn't. The curriculum of an Engineering college frankly does not explore any innovative or creative ideas but gives Assignments which of course, the respected faculty knows.
When students no longer find interest in this shitty academic system, they try to indulge in other sorts of activities such as smoking, consumption of Alcohol, Drugs, Bettings and womanizing by getting addicted to porn.

Completing graduation in engineering is miles apart when you start studying it. But definitely, a day will come in your life when you graduate. Engineering is where everyone is excited to wear graduation robe. 
You would not understand the real importance of teamwork which you have studied in books so far unless you appear for engineering exams. Remember, in Engineering, to pass the exams, combine studies and night outs are the musts. Engineering is where the night before the sem exam equals to that whole semester. Engineering is where love and war is a daily routine. You cannot expect your director of the college to have a friendly chat with you. If you get called for a lecture, then better be ready to meet a grumpy director. Engineering is where proxy means a life token, where the canteen is the real classroom and where 75% attendance is a myth.

"Derek, you there?!" Jacob's voice suddenly exclaims from the radio.

"Jacob, everything alright?" Derek asks.

"Everything's fine-!" His voice quickly cuts off, a loud metallic bang echoing somewhere near him. Ada glances over at Derek as she plugs her phone into the computer, "What's wrong?"

"...Were you planning on injecting Page with the virus that's in me?" Derek asks as more noises can be heard in the background.

"I doubt that's how Luther brought you back, he must have made something new. Check all the files, there must be something about reviving dead people somewhere in the place,"

There's a lot more clanging.

"Get back here!" A deep, disgruntled, unknown voice shouts.

"Who's that? What's going on Jacob?" Ada asks as she walks up to Derek.

"Nothing, everything's fine! Just focus on finding that revive!"

"Jacob? Jacob?!" Derek asks, but there's no response.

"I was barely able to get access to the map of this place," Ada says as she unplugs her phone from the computer, "If we have any chance of getting any important files we need to get to Luther's personal computer," She grabs her phone, opening a map of the lab, "But I don't see a head office of any sorts,"

"Let me see," Derek says, holding a hand out. Ada hands him the phone and he looks through it. There's an upper floor, which they're on, and a lower floor. Leaving the hall would put them in the upper east wing, with the door to their left being a break room that has stairs leading down below. The first room of the lab they had entered was Sub Lab 2, which connects to a garden room and the Upper Main Lab. There's a room for offices on the lower floor, but there's no main office.

Luther had his own office back at the lab I was in...but he did most of his stuff on the computers in the labs themselves…

"The main lab," Derek says, turning the screen toward Ada and pointing at it, "Luther must have used a computer in there to keep his data,"

"The main labs split into two floors," Ada grabs a knife from her belt and hands it to Derek, "I'll check downstairs, you check up here,"

Derek nods in response before Ada grabs her phone and heads out of the room into the upper east wing. Derek soons follows, seeing Ada disappear into the door to the left. As the door clicks he stands there for a second, staring at the door leading out to sub lab 2. He tightens his grip on the knife and heads for the door. Entering sub lab 2 the zombie Ada had shot and kicked to the floor was back up, and only a few feet from Derek, quickly taking notice of him. He swings the knife upward at the zombie, salshing it across the face.

Before the zombie can recover from the blow Derek plunges the knife into the side of its head. The zombie starts to fall to the floor, Derek having to let go of the knife before it breaks from the pressure. Two other zombies in the room take notice of him and start making their way to him as he pulls the knife out of the corpse's head. The lights suddenly turn off, with red ones turning on, giving the lab an unnerving redish-black tone.

"Warning, power plant in critical condition. Ten minutes until meltdown. All personnel evacuate the facility immediately,"

Derek runs towards the door to the main lab, a zombie blocking his path. He jumps up onto a nearby table, knocking over several glass vials. He jumps off the other end of the table and runs for the door. He enters a massive room full of tables, giant testing tubes filled with glowing liquids, and some computers on some tables at the ends of the room. The red lights almost make the liquid in the tubes look like blood. The room is easily twice the size of the sub lab. One of those large creatures that had chased Derek back in the lab he had woken up in floats inside one of the test tubes near the middle of the room.

He hurries over to the closest computer which is only a few feet away to his left. The computer is already unlocked, a timer in the upper right corner and a red warning symbol in the bottom right by the date. Several folders cover the desktop, a lot with different names in other languages that must be the names of various B.O.W's and viruses. He stops scanning the names when he sees one called "Derek". He quickly opens it up, a little over eight minutes left on the timer.

Opening the folder, even more folders are inside. Derek lets out a grunt of annoyance as he quickly reads the names of the folders. They're all dates. Some date to shortly after the incident in China. He starts with the most recent date, which dates back a couple months ago. An email labeled, "Success" catches his eyes. Opening it, he sees it's addressed to some guy named Norton. It reads:

"Success! After all this time, Phoenix is complete, and I was able to bring back Derek C. Simmons from the dead! I'm sure you're excited about this too, I'm already working on another vial of it and will send it to the lab in Mazraea along with the instructions on how to make it as promised,"

Derek clicks on the attachment in the email and a pdf opens up giving detailed instructions on how to make Phoenix. He sees a printer sitting right by the computer, so he clicks print and the pages soon start coming out of the printer.

"Warning, power plant in critical condition. Five minutes until meltdown. All personnel evacuate the facility immediately,"

Derek quickly grabs the pages, opening up a map of the lab and locating the chemical mixing lab, which is connected to the upper main lab in the far back left of the room.

Heading for the door to the left she enters a medium sized room a little smaller than the one she was in. The room has a tile floor, most of it being covered by a large carpet rug. Wooden counters line the right side of the room, a staircase leading downstairs sits at the other end of the room on the left side. A long blood trail leads from the door over the carpet to the stairs. She double checks her magazine.

Whatever made this trail better die in six bullets.

With time being a luxury she knows she doesn't have, Ada heads for the stairs. As she reaches the bottom half of the stairs she sees something feeding on a corpse that's the source of the blood trail. In the right side of the room down below is what looks like a human with a larger upper body hunching over its meal. Its left arm appears to be slightly more muscular than the average person's arm, but it's right arm has swollen up to something much larger. She can just barely see part of a giant eye on the shoulder.

You've got to be kidding me, did that lunatic really make another G?!

Before Ada can attempt to make her way down  the lights suddenly go out, with red ones turning on and dimly lighting up the place.

"Warning, power plant in critical condition. Ten minutes until meltdown. All personnel evacuate the facility immediately,"

Gosh dammit! I don't have time to have this thing chasing me, there's no way six bullets are enough for it! … Maybe, that thing Luther gave me will come in handy after all…

She reaches in her back pocket, pulling out a pair of ordinary looking shades. Putting them on and pressing a small button on the side she looks around, the glasses scanning the room for electronics. They lock on too many of the things on the counters, but she finds something on the door leading to the lower east wing. She clicks on another button, locking onto it. She grabs her phone, showing her an image of the thing she's locked onto.

Metal shutters, perfect.

She starts tapping on various things, getting it ready to close. Holding her phone tightly, she runs down the stairs, the mutated man taking notice of her. It lets out an inhuman roar before it starts to dash toward her as she runs past. She bursts through the door, quickly closing it and jumping away as she taps on the engage button. A heavy metal door comes down in front of the door. As she takes the glasses off she can hear the thing banging on the other side of the metal wall.

Hopefully that'll hold it…

Turning around into the east wing she sees she's not alone, six other zombies in the room with her. She presses a button on the inside of the glasses between the lenses before chucking it into the middle of the room. She puts an arm over her eyes as the glass explode with a bright flash, tiny flaming sparks flying around. One lands on her arm and she quickly puts it out. The zombies walk around blindly, some starting to catch fire from the sparks. She runs through them and heads into the sub lab 4. It looks identical to the room Derek, Jacob, and her had first entered. Luckily this room seems to be empty. She hurries to the door to the far right of the room leading to the main lab, but her steps awaken the zombies on the ground. They start to stand up, a couple standing in her path. She slides over a nearby table into the walkway in the middle and continues to the door. She enters a massive room, easily twice the size of the one she was just in. Tons of test tubes make two rows going down almost the entire length of the room. In the middle of the room is a slightly raised platform with stairs leading up to it from all four sides. Several computers sit in the corners of the platform.

She hurries past the test tubes, most filled with various disgusting things like human bodies in various stages of rot or mutation. Some of them look like even more messed up versions of the thing in the break room. She reaches the platform and goes to the closest computer, which is already unlocked, another timer in the upper right corner, displaying a little less than eight minutes, and a red warning symbol in the lower right by the date. Several folders with names of B.O.W's and other things cover the desktop. She sees one named "Derek" and clicks on it. It opens to show more folders, all labeled with various dates. Some date to shortly after the incident in China. Ada opens the most recent on, finding an email labeled, "Success". Opening it, she sees it's addressed to Norton.

So, you were still working with him all this time...guess you getting fired was just a cover up.

After she finishes reading it she clicks on the attachment, opening up the instructions. She plugs her phone into the computer and starts copying the files into it.

"Warning, power plant in critical condition. Five minutes until meltdown. All personnel evacuate the facility immediately,"

The files in her phone, she quickly detaches it, pulling up the map on it and looking for a room where she could make it. The chemical mixing lab upstairs seems to be the best bet, however it's connected only to the upper main lab. An elevator sits at the far end on the left side of the room though, connecting the upper and lower main labs. She heads for the elevator. Reaching it she gets inside and presses the button to go up, the door closing before it starts up.

Jacob, you better do something and fast, you promised to help me get him back...

He looked at the robot thingy and asked, " What are you ? "

" I am the one who will help you achieve your goals. My name is Andy. ", the robot 'Andy ' replied.

" Why are you helping me ? "

" Because you were chosen. "

" Who ? Who chose me ? "

" You will know when the time comes. For now, know this , In the cyber world there is nothing impossible for me. So, let me help you achieve your goals and one day when I require your help, you will have to repay me in full. "

After saying this, Andy revealed a wide grin from his earlier non existent mouth.

Shuvam had read a lot of light novels. He was really when he realized that this OP system would help him achieve his goals in life. But when he saw the grin on Andy's face, Shuvam was once again scared. It seemed like he was making a deal with the devil himself.

But when he remembered the warning he got from his father. He decided to go on with it. After he couldn't just magically get 70% in his upcoming 12th grade exams and he didn't want to give up on studying game development.

" As long as you help me make games, I will comply with all your requests." , Shuvam said solemnly.

" Since you agree to help me, I will surely help you grow. But first of all, you need to employ a hacker bot from the software you just installed. "

" What would I need that for ? " 
Since he wanted to be lead a happy and fun life by playing and making games, he frowned when he heard that he needed to employ some hacker bot and second he didn't even know how to do it. 

" Let me tell you this. Each and every person on this planet has their cyber activity constantly monitored. I have prevented them from hearing to us and monitoring you but I can only prevent them for about half an hour. So you would need hacker bot to prevent them from monitoring you."

" How do I employ one? There are no files related to the software or a shortcut to open the software."

" The software is called ' Game dev system ' and you have to say ' interface ' in order to open the software. "

"Interface", Shuvam said ecstatically.

The whole screen changed. He was taken to a new screen which had drak-red background and a few options to select from.

He was currently on the ' Current Projects ' tab. It said ' No current projects ' in big bold silver letters. There were other tabs such as employment office, employed bots and profile.

Andy appeared on the right side of the screen and explained how the software functioned and its options.

" This is the software. You can check your current projects in the current projects tab. The progress of the ongoing projects can be checked here. The employment office is where you employ bots for making them do your work. The bots are bought using dev coins. You will be given a startup amount of coins to work with and later you will  earn them on the basis of the popularity of your games. Employed bots shows you the list of bots you have employed and shows whether those are bots are free or working in any project. Your profile shows you the popularity of your finished games and your current balance. "

" Now go to the employment office tab and employ a hacker bot. "

" What is my startup amount? "

" You have been provided with 1000 dev coins as startup amount. Since only basic bots are available for you to employ, it will cost you 100 dev coins to employ a basic hacker bot. "

" OK. I will buy one ASAP. But why basic? Will it be able to prevent those people from monitoring me? "

" It is more than enough for now. "

When he clicked on the employment office tab, he was shocked. There was a row of names with prices beside them. He felt like he was on a crappy e-commerce website with just name of the products and their prices. There were lots of bots. He saw animator bots, AI maker bots, hacker bots, level design bots, musician bots, assistant bots, 3d modeling bots, programmer bots and game testing bots. The prices were pretty much same, assistant bots and game testing bots were 10 dev coins each whereas the remaining ones were 100 dev coins each.

He was ecstatic when he saw these different types of bots that are needed to develop games .Since Andy was still there, he controlled himself and clicked on the hacker bot option.

It took him to an description page. The name of the bot was displayed in bold letters with its price - 100 dev coins, free space required - 100 GB and its description saying ' These bots help you by stopping any cyber attacks on you, preventing others from monitoring your cyber activity and helps you carry out cyber attacks on others. '

There was a blue ' employ ' button at the right side of the page. Shuvam clicked it. 100 of his dev coins and 100 GB of his free space went away just like that. 

" I suggest you employ two of those. "

" Two. Why? "

"You pressed the blue ' employ ' button which means you employed a defensive hacker not which prevents others from attacking you. Now press that circular button at the side and you can employ offensive hacker bot. You will be needing one offensive bot to get you some money in order to buy better hardware."

" Wait, you can give me money, too? "

"Of course, employ a hacker bot  and tell it to transfer money to your bank account. But the bank account needs to be yours not anyone else's."

Thinking how he can go to Kathmandu on his own and study game designing, he grew ecstatic and was grinning.

At breakfast the next morning, I said, "We have a lot of work to do today.  I wish we could farm it out, but, given my record of alienating people, I would cause someone to bring the cartel down on us.

"We have a gazillion photos of people at our parents' funeral.  We have to divide them up and see who is there and who is not...  The big whale is Avery Shrike.  If we could just identify him, then we could get him to stop screwing with us.  Every one of his actions causes the cartel to go a bit nuts and attack us."

We started in by separating the pictures by who they were.  In other words, Blanch Shrike got her own pile, then Camilla Shrike, then Daphne Shrike and so on.  About a third of the way through, I discovered that BITSY Jones had installed a set of cameras over the guest book.  BITSY was born Bethany Isabella Theresa Sylvia Yvonne Jones.   She wanted to be a photographer, but there just was no way that was going to happen with the amount of money her parents had...  Anyway...  I called a halt and opened a spreadsheet with titles from the guest book, last name, first name(s) and relationship to deceased.  I added Throne number, file name/page number of the pictures taken by my  friends, time the picture was taken and a verified column.  I filled in the spreadsheet with the names from the guest book, 536 names all together.  I went back through and filled in the page in the list of relatives I had gotten from Jenkins and their Throne number.  Then I compared the pictures in the files of relatives with the  person who signed in.  I put a check in the 'Verified' column if so.

The people who put 'Employee' or 'Friend' or had unintelligible handwriting, I skipped that record and went on to the next one.  About midnight, I finished.  I needed the employee file for Saginaw Industries...  Which was an insane idea.  I had made a mistake...  Avery could have come disguised as an obscure relative.  No telling what Avery looked like nowadays.

Something BITSY had done...  I struggled to bring it to mind...  I had been in the bookstore and making the PDF's...  BITSY had...  I could not remember...  I pulled up the directory of the emails...   I sorted by Name of Sender...  Found BITSY... twice...  The first email on the list was the two video files that showed who had signed in...  The second was... the Subject said, 'DNA tests'.  I  found the PDF and the thing had 1023 pages.  BITSY had gotten at least 20 of my friends to give out water to the guests in marked bottles that had builtin straws.  Afterwards, they had gathered up the  trash and extracted the bottles.  The trick was that as my friends gave out a bottle, they surreptitiously made a photo of the person with the bottle... and the number on the bottle was shown in the photo.   In the notes, BITSY said that they had even gotten the catering staff...  I put my head in my hands and groaned.  Who would wear gloves to a summer event in Houston in June?...  Answer, they had  to, because they were
catering staff.

I rummaged through the box and found the printout of the second BITSY file and pulled out all the service staff...  Jenkins and the maids and drivers from the house were there...  I set the photos aside of all the service staff... then I noticed a security guy with gloves on.

An epiphany filled my whole body...  Avery did not have to be an accountant in my mother's firm.  All he had to be was a security guy who noticed that my mother brought in 120 tons of sugar per week and sold it for a profit.

I sat back and stared at the picture.  The man looked to be about the right age.  The gloves were... cotton.  White cotton gloves... the type that people with a skin disease wore.

I must have sat there until almost 6am thinking of all the possibilities.  I ran all these scenarios through my head of how to capture Avery.  All of them seemed to take too long and ended with Avery having enough time to talk his way out or they were too short in which case Avery got away because he had an escape route I knew nothing about.  Each of them seemed to leave Avery alive... able to come back and attack me at some future date.

I looked at all the stuff on the floor and I sighed.  I walked into the master bedroom and found the three of them in the super-king-sized bed.  I went into the bathroom and did my business, then I took a long shower.  When I came out, I washed the dye out of my hair.  I did not apply makeup.

I woke them and said, "I have to leave right now. I have found who I think is Avery. If I can just get him off the board, then we can deal with the druggies. Try to stay here all day... People, we now enter the endgame. I think I know all the players. I am pretty sure I got the rules right in my head. Now all I need to do is sweep Avery and the druggies from the board and move on to the real Game of Thrones." On the way out, I snagged my laptop and the mad money pouch and three burner phones.

I mused as I drove north that I had thought 50 cellphones was way too many.  Before this was over, I might have to buy some more.

I found a Starbucks with a WiFi and settled in to do a lot of work.  First I checked my gmail account.  Duke had been very busy.

He had acquired the tagging kit from Carl King.  His comment was that the thing looked too weird to be real.  I had to agree with him.  The first time I saw it, I had not believed it either.  I gave him a list of dead drops.  We would be using prepared lockers.  In my gamer period, we had gone around and modified about ten lockers in the city.  One of them should still be in operating order.

The procedure was that he walked in, put the device at the back of the locker, paid the fee and took the key.  I would come in and open the locker on the other side of the bank, push a button, open a door between the two lockers and pick up the package.  Most likely some of those lockers would have been replaced or removed in the last few years,... but not all.

Duke had also gotten me the names of all the people in the torturer's warehouse... and their records.  Duke had gone out of his way to document the torturer.  The guy, born Jorge Latanza, had been used by way too many governments around the world,... because he got results.  He...  REALLY liked his work... too much.  He had been arrested in the U.S. three times.  Duke had helpfully pulled the mug shots of the arrests in Los Angeles, Chicago and New York City.  Each time the State Department or the CIA or in the last case, Homeland Security had gotten the charges quashed...  Interesting.

The rest of the A-Team didn't stand out.  Each was a professional.  Each could do his job well, but they were in it for the money.  They were not driven like the torturer.

Then there was the Colombian drug lord, Pepe Leticia.  He had not visited the warehouse, but he was in communications with the A-Team.  Duke discovered that the guy was living in the penthouse suite of the Antigua Hotel in downtown Houston... bold as brass.  Duke had been able to get quite a bit of the email from Pepe to his friends back in Colombia.  I read through the Spanish.  The wording was becoming heated.  His partners were NOT happy about the loss of the ton of cocaine.  They were particularly unhappy  about the loss of the 20 tons of cocaine...  In short they had not been informed that the shipment had not gone through.  Pepe was saying that he was days from getting the drugs back, so no need to worry...  Other email to his subordinates indicated that Pepe was considering settling in the U.S. rather than going home.  Everyone was wondering how I was getting away with the shit I was getting away with...  The killings of 25 of my relatives was scaring the folks back home.  They felt that Pepe had  lost control of Jorge.  They wanted Jorge and his team killed and dumped close to a police station to take the heat off the cartel...  Ah...  The cartel was getting heat from their enablers in the Colombian government.  They wanted to write off the whole operation.  The sooner the better.

Then a figurative bomb blew up in my face...  Pepe Leticia was father to Felipe and Felicia Leticia.  During the school presidential race of the year before, Felicia Leticia swore that I had gone to bed with her.  Felipe was one of my friends.  He had come to visit me about this affront to family honor.  Felipe went to the hospital after the beating I gave him.  It had taken three months before he believed me that it was a political dirty trick.  He had been at Laurie's party and had been very happy to be on the list of people who would help me...  In short, I had been sending email to the enemy without knowing it.

I had to hand it to Avery.  This connection was kind of obscure, but once the police had started tearing my life apart they would surely have made the connection.  Avery had chosen the Laurentia Cartel to approach because they had a connection to me and thus to my father.  I was tempted to contact ol' Filipe, but I decided that I needed some more information...  Like, was I going to have to run from Felipe if his father died at my hands accidentally?

The next email from Duke gave me the time and departure date for the forensic accountant.  Today...  Crap...  Then Duke right then sent email saying that he would get the tagger kit to me ASAP.  I checked the time.  The guy left at 5pm.  He should be at the airport at between 2pm and 3pm.  It was now, 10am...  Just doable.  I sent email to Duke asking him to proceed.  He acknowledged.  I sat and waited.

I logged into the server at my house and sent email to my list telling everyone how much help the photographs had been.  I singled out BITSY for effusive praise for her attack on the problem.  Then I said that it was going to take a week or so to process all the photos.  I sent private email using a yahoo account I made just for that email.  I told BITSY to hold onto the plastic bottles until I personally came by.  If anyone came without me, call 911 and hope for the best.  I had some plans for those bottles.

I knew that all the email that was being generated by my server was being read.  If the police went by and saw BITSY, then they would have all 1023 bottles tested maybe.  Waste of time and money, but it would give them something to do.

What boggled my mind was that the torturer had not grabbed one of my friends to force me to show up.  Maybe my attitude toward Wesley had convinced him that since I would not reveal myself for a relative, a friend was just SOL...  No telling what ol' Jorge was thinking.

I closed up and moved to a McDonalds... then to another book store... then a strange restaurant for lunch... then Duke got back to me.  The kit was in drop number 5.

I drove to a parking lot next to the gym where the lockers were and parked.  Then I wandered down to the gym, found the locker on the other side of the one with kit and discovered that the thing was in use...  No worries...  I pulled out the master key and opened the locker.  I pushed the junk that was there out of the way and pressed the button.  I pulled out the tagger kit from the other locker along with a picture of the accountant.  I locked the locker behind me.

In my car, I reviewed what I had to do.  I moved the injector and the tags to the party bag I had bought at the book store.  I drove to the airport.  At the last moment I realized that were I to go through security they would identify me as Taegan Shrike.  I knew what the guy looked like, but I was unsure what exactly to do to get the tagger into his inside arm.  I settled on standing close to the line where the tickets for Bogota would be verified.

I put the injector on my arm.  Anyone looking at it would see a complicated mechanical pencil.  I mean the thing curled around my arm like a snake.  I ejected the lead in the pencil.  I loaded the injector with the tiny tagger which was the width of a lead for a mechanical pencil.  There was a pump disguised as an ornament at the end of the pencil.  I pressed it three times.  I assumed that would give the thing enough umph to shoot the tagger into the guy's arm...  I mean, this was an elaborate air pistol.

After an eternity, the guy arrived.  Thank God he had on short sleeves instead of a coat.  I dropped a roll of duct tape and seeming to run after the thing right up to the guy.  I bumped into him, stabbed him on the inside of his left arm with the point of the mechanical pencil and discharged the injector.  I picked up the duct tape without saying a word.  The guy was rubbing his arm.  I went back to where I had been and stood there as before.  After a while, I put away the injector and pulled out the data dumper.  I pressed a button and a green light flickered then became solid green.  I attached it to my laptop, brought up some software and opened a file from the tagger.  The GPS tagger worked.  I sighed a sigh of relief.  I pulled my cell and made out like I had gotten a call...  Then I packed up everything and went back to my van and drove back to the rental.

I lounged in the pool for the rest of the day doing nothing much except napping.

Chapter 1-3 (exceptional) 

Frank awoke with a jolt, the concrete he laid upon offered little comfort as he stood with a groan. He was in an alley, but that couldn't be right, the shitty little town he lived in barely had two buildings close enough. He rubbed the grime out of his eyes, and groped around for his glasses, eventually finding them in his jeans, slipping them on he finally got a good look around.

It was the most stereotypical alleyway he could ever have conceived of and up above the tall buildings was a brilliant blue sky. He hadn't the faintest clue how he got here, the last thing he could remember was going out on a walk, or something, the past few hours were a little fuzzy. Had he been kidnapped or something? Almost as if to answer his question a heavy tome landed at his feet with a thud.

"What in the fuck?!" He exclaimed. But after a moment's hesitation, he bent down and picked up the strangely colored book.

'Necronomicon,' it read. Just beneath the gold emblazoned title was a note pinned to the distressingly textured cover. Written upon a thick parchment it read, 'Transported to a realm not thine own, with but two gifts and only a note to guide thee. Thou hast been granted an opened mind and a tome of great knowledge. The Queen Administrator shall fail, defeat the Warrior's shade and thine fate shall be revealed. Be forewarned displaced one, should thee fail in thine quest, death shall be a kindness.'

"What." The note was absorbed into the book's disturbingly textured cover. He blinked, the shock quickly wore away as he mulled over the note's words. He had a sneaking suspicion as to what was happening, and he was going to get an answer. The brown-haired man strolled out of the alleyway onto the mostly vacant sidewalk and walked up to a poor looking fellow leaning up against an abandoned storefront.

"Legend or Eidolon?" He asked.

"Psh, Alexandria's where it's at man, she's got an ass you could bounce a dime off," responded the scruffy-looking man with a chuckle.

"...Right, thanks," said Frank. He walked away without another word. All around him he saw a dense cityscape, off into the distance he could see a bay, leading out into the Atlantic, and right smack dab in the middle of it was an oil rig, enshrouded by a hazy energy field. The realization hit him like a hammer, and Frank couldn't decide between screaming out of fanboyish glee or gut-wrenching horror.

He leaned up against a building on the sidewalk, shaking lightly and nearly hyperventilating. Frank slowly leaned up against the wall and slide down it, eyes wide and mind racing the possibilities thrumming through his mind at a mile a minute. He was in Worm and had the Necronomicon, he was in fucking Worm and had the fucking Necronomicon. Frank chuckled lightly, and then it swiftly grew into deep belly-aching laughter.

After a moment, he collected himself, standing up he straightened his ruffled dull grey jacket, with a face filled with determination and heart full of terror he set out.

Chapter 2

The first order of business for any aspiring super person was to find a base of operations. Which was why Frank was strolling through a rundown neighborhood as he slowly stroked the cover of his new favorite book.

Judging by the distinct lack of swastikas and oriental people, in addition to the vast amount of shady looking poor people, he had to assume he was in or around the Merchant's turf, which was probably for the best, all things considered.

Frank slowly wandered the streets, looking through the run-down neighborhood after run-down neighborhood, attempting to find an abandoned house that hopefully wouldn't cave in on him. After nearly an hour of searching, he found just the right place, a tiny, shitty looking house surrounded by other, tiny, shitty looking houses.

It was a small one-floor abode, the paint was largely chipped away, the lawn overgrown and the windows mostly shattered, it was perfect. Frank walked along the overgrown brickwork leading up to the front door, idly kicking detritus out of the way. He pulled out his only weapon, a tiny, dull pocket knife. When he reached the entrance he walked over to an empty window frame and peered inside, it looked vacant, but who knew what horrors could be hiding inside. He climbed through the window frame as quietly as he could.

Frank's search of the largely barren home was uneventful and brief, the small one-bedroom home was inhabited with nothing but several rat carcasses, a small mountain of ancient used syringes, and a few badly worn pieces of furniture.

Frank plopped down on a cushionless couch that was the sole occupant of the living room and set the fleshy tome on his lap. Before him lay a book filled with untold horrors awaiting to be unleashed, a book filled with more eldritch knowledge than could even be conceived of by mortal man. His task was nigh insurmountable, and this was the tool given to him to accomplish it. Frank pondered his options for a long while, what he was willing to do to survive, what he was willing to do to win. He came to his resolution with a grimace, and a tinge of excitement, after all, Worm was all about doing the wrong things for the right reasons.

But before he set out on his quest there was one more thing he had to do. Frank held the book up by the back cover so that the pages at the end would fall to the front, they did, and then they continued to fall. He held it in that position for over a minute as pages continued to fall, the size of the book never changing. He chuckled. Frank stared at the book for a while longer, fear gripping his heart, preventing him from taking the first step.

He let out a quiet sight, with a determination born of a fear of another sort and an immense curiosity, he opened the Necronomicon. The language it was written in was of a strange sort, while appearing to just be random gibberish on the page, it somehow directly communicated the raw intent of the words into his mind. The first page was a preface of sorts, it stated that this 'Necronomicon' (as it's actual name was physically unpronounceable by humans) was a kind of compilation of all 'relevant' knowledge in the entire multiverse. Thank whatever random omnipotent being gave him this version, as the actual Necronomicon would have been fucking useless.

He turned the page, it was a table of contents.

'ROB is being so kind,' he thought.

As he read through the table of contents he realized something that should have been rather obvious. Not only was this tome a source of immense arcane lore, but technological knowledge as well. As he continued to read he also noticed that there were no page numbers. He pondered this issue for a moment if ROB was being so kind already… He thought of Shoggoths and turned the page, on it was a detailed entry on the biology and creation process of Shoggoths.

Before he really dived into it, he wanted to confirm a niggling suspicion he had. Turning to a page on directed energy weapons, he briefly skimmed it. Unlike tinker tech, the technology in this was completely genuine, no hyperdimensional fuckery here, just honest to tentacle covered god technology. Hopefully magic would be a bit easier to learn.

Turning to the introductory page on magic, he read over it, and it was actually fairly simple at its core. Magic was a lot like flexing a hidden muscle that you never knew you had. It was your connection to the very universe, something that most mortals never realized was there.

The first 'spell' the book stated a practitioner of magic should learn was a simple focusing exercise. Continuing with the muscle analogy, it was a lot like lifting weights, magical weights. It took him a couple of minutes to figure it out, but it was surprisingly easy. He continued the focusing exercise for a long while until he felt that he'd mostly gotten the hang of it.

He eagerly turned the page, now that he was a fully qualified wizard, it was time to learn some real magic!

Chapter 3

A/N: I'm grabbing most of the spells from the Call of Cthulhu Spell Grimoire (with some liberal modifications). You can find a free complete PDF online if you care to look it up.

The sun was rising, he hadn't even noticed the sunset in the first place. He closed the Necronomicon with a satisfying snap and stretched as he stood up, then immediately rushed outback as his bladder screamed for release.

After finishing his business he went into the kitchen and attempted to turn on the sink's faucet, nothing came out, while he hadn't expected the water to be on in this abandoned shithole, it was worth a shot. Unfortunately, he had yet to discover the secrets of immortality, so he still had to eat and drink, among all those other things those pesky mortals had to deal with. He needed to get money and food somehow, and he didn't have his wallet on him, so what other option was there but to go out and murder random Merchants and steal their stuff. In addition to some other things, of course.

Fortunately, during his binge reading session, he'd managed to learn one actual spell, plus a few other fun things. The spell allowed him to conjure an invisible, extendable, and exceedingly sharp razor out of thin air. It was basically Jack Slash's more obvious power, but better. And if Jack Slash could go head to head with the mightiest heroes, while murdering scores of people, obviously he could too.

But first, he'd need a few things, some clothing to better blend in and something to carry his stuff around in. He'd ended up stealing his disguise from a probably dead homeless person he'd found behind an abandoned store, which consisted of a brown jacket that was filthier than dirt, a beanie that smelled like it'd came out of a grease pit, and a bandanna that actually didn't smell or look that bad. His second item appeared in the form of a backpack that was made almost entirely of duct tape, which he'd found next to a homeless person that probably wasn't dead. Within the backpack he stored his precious Necronomicon, it was far more convenient than stuffing it under his shirt as he had been.

Finally, Frank began his hunt and did so for nearly three hours before he found his mark. It was an isolated group of shady looking guys leaned up against a wall quietly talking to each other. Logically, they had to be drug dealers working for the Merchants, and if not, oh well.

"Hey, you guys got any drugs?" Frank asked as he approached them. They stared at him, varying looks of incredulity on their faces.

"Fuck off?" Said the one in the center.

"Go to the Merchants if you want your fix, freak," said the one on the left.

"Well, fancy you should say that," Frank said with a laugh. He conjured and swung his invisible blade, neatly decapitating the one in the middle, and nearly decapitating the one on the right. The one on the left tried to run, but with a neat flick of his wrist his prey fell to the ground, his Achilles tendons cut, and with a few quick slashes, his final target perished.

He walked up to the corpses with a casual stroll and dragged them into the dead-end of the alleyway they had been standing outside of. The alleyway was as filthy and cluttered as most other alleys were in Brockton Bay, but luckily for him, this one was a bit different, with a decently large alcove at the very end of it, which would hopefully obscure his upcoming sorcery from the wandering eye.

Several minutes later he had finished dragging the last corpse into the alley, he walked back out, looking at the large pool of blood and obvious drag marks in the concrete, he hoped nobody would be stupid enough to interfere.

Frank plopped down next to the pile of corpses, cracking open the Necronomicon he flipped to the page with the ritual on it, he reread it once more to assuage his paranoia.

He stripped the corpses of their clothing and valuables, stowing them in his backpack. Frank conjured his spectral razor once more, it doubled as an effective ritual blade. He began to flay one of the dead men, slowly but surely, he cut away the flesh with his ethereal blade, the process was surprisingly quick, taking only a few minutes. He repeated this process twice more, neatly stacking the flayed strips of flesh on top of each other. Once completed, he picked up the Necronomicon in his off-hand and placed his right hand on top of the stack. Frank read the accursed words slowly but surely, only five minutes passed and the ritual was complete, a blob of alabaster Flesh was now where the strips of skin were, he wiped a bead of sweat from his brow, he wasn't finished yet.

Frank laid the Necronomicon on the ground off to the side, he'd need it as a guide for this ritual as well. He rubbed his fingers around on the flayed body, smearing as much blood as he could on them and crawled back to a portion of the alcove that wasn't already drenched in blood. With painstaking slowness he drew out the runes copied from the Necronomicon on the ground, it took nearly an hour to do so.

Once he finished quadruple checking the circle, he couldn't help but let out a nervous breath Frank picked up the blob of Flesh and gingerly placed it in the proper position in front of the circle, and then stripped off every article of clothing, placing them next to his backpack.

As carefully as he could he eased himself down inside of the circle on his knees, he began to chant, the same alien phrase, over and over, for nearly a minute nothing happened, but slowly and surely the Flesh that laid before him swept up into the air as if by some invisible current, it encircled Frank, spinning slowly around him. It drifted closer and closer to him as if by a gentle breeze, and then it flowed on top of him, the pale Flesh merging with his own.

It was agonizing, and it wasn't supposed to be, properly performed this ritual was supposed to be painless. Normally if he were subject this level of raw bleeding agony, he would be a screaming wreck writhing about on the ground, but it seemed the paralyzing effect of the ritual had taken effect, locking his body into place and preventing even a twinge. It continued like this for several more minutes before the ritual finally finished, and it took several more minutes for the paralysis to wear off. When he could finally move, he bonelessly collapsed to the ground, every motion felt like sandpaper grinding into his flesh.

Minutes passed before he could work up the energy to stand. Frank inspected his Flesh as he hobbled to his pile of clothing, he looked emaciated now, the Flesh absorbing most of his body fat in the bonding process. His skin was far too pale, far too smooth, almost like porcelain, he knew it would get better in time, but it would never look like a human's again. He was also completely bald, he really hoped he could grow his hair back.

The pain had largely faded as he slipped on the last of his clothing. Frank looked over to the bodies, there was one more ritual that he should have performed, but he couldn't bring himself to do it. Then again, it was barely even worth being called a ritual, all he'd have to do was say a few words and… The bile rose up in his throat, later, he would do it later. Frank hurried out of the alley, he quickly checked the men's wallets, combined they had around fifty dollars, a surprising haul for such an impoverished area. At least he could afford food now.
