Over the jungles of Delta Amacuro, night settles. Soon, it'll be darker than Esa will feel secure about.
Alas, this Bloodforce magic net that she's in feels TOO secure. And she's got no idea where this mosquito plans to bump her off. Hell, he's probably just trailing her, hoping that any bat that flies by to try to eat him will snatch her instead of him...
A bit unfair... And yet, Esa would be lying if she said she didn't like the idea of it...
Below, there's nothing but flooded jungle. The Orinoco Delta is very vast, and very forested.
Abruptly, the mosquito severs the Bloodforce tether. Or rather, he vanishes the tether and net both...and flies on...leaving Esa to freefall once again. She barely has time to teleport away before a candiru abruptly breaches, snatches her by her ass, and dives back down, with her ass clamped firmly in his jaws.
Once underwater, he casts an air-making orb around Esa's head, so she can breathe. He holds on tightly to her ass, as he dives very deeply, where the arapaimas, catfish, and stingrays don't dare feed.
A dogpile of stingrays scatter, alas, as the candiru drags the little day witch down into an underwater hole. It's like a rabbit hole...only underwater. Funny; Esa didn't know rabbits could dive...let alone swim.
Once inside, he takes her down many tunnels. They all curve and fork. Some of them fork more than twice. Esa's got NO idea how her carrier navigates them...or remembers where to go. He sure doesn't have any navigation skills her mama taught her.
At last, the tunnel widens, and lets out into a chamber. From it, other tunnels run. Now, though, the candiru merely swims high over the tunnel floor...and drops the little witch. She does very slow flips through the water, as she sinks...and lands on her bum. On the upside, it's a softer landing than before. On the downside, it catches Esa off-guard, even if it doesn't actually hurt. Even so, her ass still hurts from the candiru's jaws.
They don't call the candiru the penis fish for nothing...
The candiru is joined by a brotherhood of other male candirus. They've all psionic powers, and they're all vamps who do Bloodforce magic. Like most vamps, their magic is different from a Bloodforce wizard's. Not that Esa would know...
Their brotherhood is soon joined by a brotherhood of tumblers (i.e. mosquito pupae). They're comma-shaped, and hang upside-down when treading water. When swimming, they tumble...in a way that makes the underwater version of Esa look lame. To breathe, they cast Bloodforce air-making orbs over their airways. These vamps are zombies, as well as vamps. Or rather, they're short-term zombies; they'll lose their Deathforce powers when they become fully-fledged mosquitoes. They're the pubescent children of this assembly...considering that that's essentially what an insect pupa is. (Not a bad concept, actually...)
One final brotherhood swims in, through another tunnel. They're leeches. Like the candirus and tumblers, they're vamps, they've psionic powers, and they can do Bloodforce magic.
At last, the assembly's all gathered. They meet in the security of the cave...surrounding Esa, like a pack of wolves around a lamb.
Esa's pretty sure she should try to teleport out of this... Alas, they've probably cast spells all around the cave, to keep her from doing that. She's a dead girl, for sure. The tumblers might turn her into an inferus/zombie... But then, she's not so sure she'd want to be one. For her, it's already hard enough being this small and underwater at night...two of her least-favorite places on Orbis.
"This is the day witch," one of the leeches says telepathically. "Unclear, as to how she got here. She's Latina, but...she sports all the quirks of a New Yorker."
"I AM a New Yorker," Esa tells them. "I didn't mean to come here. What do you want from me?"
"We've brought you here for your own protection," one of the candirus says telepathically.
"I'm flattered," Esa tells them. "But taking me to the top of a tree would've been more conclusive to that end. Or better yet, you could banish me back to New York, and..."
"You are not ready for that. Either way, it's a dangerous world out there for you."
She scoffs. "No shit. Don't you think I should be in New York, with that in mind?"
"We'd hate to send you away so soon," one of the tumblers says telepathically. "You're hardly our ugliest guest."
"I have no interest in getting my blood sucked, if that's what you're implying."
"We know our food," they say. "You're not on our menu. Alas, you are on the menus of many others. That's why we're here. Plus, day magi aren't a very popular thing, where we're from. Hence, you're better off with us. Just...don't go too hogwild about doing any light-conjuring spells while you're down here. Contrary to what they tell you in New York, light does hurt us."
She scoffs. "I haven't heard anything in New York. Hell, I didn't even know my mother was a day witch, until the night I shrunk. Up until now, vampires and zombies were just another horror movie."
"You may leave at your own peril. Just...don't get too paranoid each time you turn around, and one of us is there."
"O sure," Esa mocks. "A vamp or a zombie is going to be following me around at all times. Why wouldn't I get paranoid?"
With that, they swim away.
"Wait," Esa tries to swim after them, but can't. "Come back! I didn't mean..."
With Bloodforce magic, they cast acceleration charms, and are out in a flash. Via the Bloodforce air-making orb still cast around her nose and mouth, Esa heaves a sigh. It seems that finding a sympathetic ear to complain into is just as hard in Delta Amacuro as it is in Manhattan...
Esa can't imagine that she'd feel secure sleeping outside these tunnels...so she takes her chances, and takes a nap on this cave floor. She might as well. Her ass is still hurting.
As she sleeps, she dreams of that hot-bodied merman. Hence, she rolls over on her back, jerks off in her sleep, and moans.

Esa's a Latina witch in Manhattan...which is much more challenging than it sounds.

 Chapter 1 

 

Exhausted by the succession of events of the day and in fact of the entire week she had passed in Buenos Aires, the woman placed her small suitcase in the luggage rack located above the line of seats, sat in her place that was located next to the window and anticipating what the hostesses would ask to all passengers put on the seat belt. The seat, located in the tourist class, was very narrow considering that the flight to New York would take nine hours so she decided that at her arrival she would ask her sponsors to take a ticket in the executive category for the following flights, at least for those that exceed certain duration, for example five hours. She thought that this requirement was reasonable since most of her travels were within the United States and therefore shorter. 

Following her usual flight anxiety the woman had been one of the first passengers to board and now the rest were entering the narrow aisles of the cabin. The passage consisted of a mixture of Argentines and Americans, the latter in general couples or small groups of elderly people returning from vacations in the distant southern country, wearing striking multicolored print shirts and other garments more appropriate for Miami or Hawaii than for the hectic South American city, whose inhabitants seemed to walk and travel always with a frenetic pace, so different from other Latin American cities the woman had known. The Argentines were distinguishable by their more austere dress and by the amount of packages that they intended to place in the luggage compartments, even forcing their capacity. She begged the seat next to her be occupied by an American; otherwise as she did not speak Spanish that could be a boring and too long trip. 

She unwillingly glimpsed a tall, thin youngster who approached watching at the letters of the rows of seats looking for his own. Although at first sight he seemed to be one of the Argentines the lady secretly wished that he would sit next to her, for he was a very handsome young man. She shook her head as if to scare the idea away. 

<Lena, he could be ... not your son but a much younger nephew. He's not for you.> 

Ignorant of the thoughts that circulated in the woman's head, the young man stopped in the line where Lena sat, confirmed his location and looked at her smiling. 

"Hola." he succinctly said. 

"Hello," replied the woman, furious with herself for not having learned how to respond in Spanish a single word. 

The man placed his suitcase in the luggage compartment and sat down on the aisle seat. 

“Excuse me. I have seat 14B.” He said in English, much to Lena´s relief who however again reproached immediately herself. 

<Do not make absurd ideas.> 

The stewardess walked down the aisle where passengers were still struggling with their suitcases, helping them to store them in the upper compartments and close their doors. 

Also the young man put the seat belt on and as his legs were too long for the short space between seats he placed them partially in the hallway after the stewardess had passed. 

"Very small seats for such long trips." said in tune with what Lena had been pondering before. Then smiling again, he extended his right hand and introduced himself. 

“Federico Gribaudo.” 

Lena was pleasantly surprised again by the man's formal introduction and answered immediately. 

“Lena Javit.” 

"New Yorker?" It was obvious that the young man named Federico wanted to initiate a conversation. Although the woman had previously the idea of getting asleep as soon as possible to recover the missing sleep hours of the entire week she willingly accepted the disposition of her traveling companion. 

"Yes." she answered. "Born and raised in New York City." 

Once the ice was broken so easily Lena continued the conversation. 

"Is this your first trip to the United States?" 

"No, I was a couple of times in Miami, but never in New York.” 

"You are probably anxious to see the Big Apple. You have a whole world to discover.” 

"Yes, I actually know it from family references. My father lived several years in New York when he was a young man and my mother, who was then his girlfriend, visited him ... of course all this happened many years ago.” 

“Everything in New York has changed a lot and at the same time the city remains the same.” 

"My parents came back a couple of years ago for tourism, to visit all the places they had known together so long ago. It was a sentimental trip. They were in front of the building where my father was renting an apartment.” 

"Do you know in which area?" 

"Yes, in Brooklyn Heights. A historical site. They talked about it a lot.” 

“Actually a good place to live.” 

To Lena's delight the conversation flowed pleasantly. Although his vocabulary was somewhat limited and from time to time he needed help from a particular term, Federico spoke English in a very acceptable way with a particular Argentine accent that the woman already knew from her business interviews. His talk showed clearly that he was an intelligent young man. 

"And tell me, Federico." The conversation had already become colloquial. "What other places did your parents tell you about?" 

The long list of museums, galleries and other sites ended up convincing Lena that the boy came from a family of good cultural level. 

"You want to visit those places?" 

“Yes. I'm going to spend a relatively long time in New York.” 

"And what other places did your parents tell you about?" 

“Let me think ... there was a park they were especially fond of ...” 

"The Central Park?" 

"They were not referring to the Central Park. There was a small park, a closed place, to which for some reason they assigned a romantic connotation. I remember seeing pictures of my parents in front of that place.” 

"Gramercy Park?" Lena flinched in her seat with her enthusiasm. 

"Yes, I think that was the name.” 

"But that's where I live." 

The conversation entered insensibly into slightly more personal matters. Lena tried without much success not to make her interest too obvious. 

"What are you going to do in New York? Are you going to settle in the United States?” 

“Not for the moment. I will work in the headquarters of my company for six months, which is what the visa I have at present allows.” 

"What company is that?" 

Federico gave the name of the firm. 

“What is this company´s business?” 

“Financial services.” 

“Are you an expert in finance? 

"No, I'm a systems graduate. I'm going to get trained in the systems that the firm uses around the world. In Buenos Aires they have just opened a branch that will be in charge of their business throughout the South America except Brazil.” 

"Have you worked with them long?" 

“Six months. As I told you, the firm recently settled in the country.” 

Lena finally decided to ask the question that was hanging around her mind. 

“How old are you?” 

“Twenty three.” 

It was the approximate age the woman calculated. At that moment the pilot of the aircraft announced the departure of the flight and the stewardesses made a last control to confirm that everything was in order. Immediately the aircraft began its takeoff and it quickly gained in altitude. After it the conversation continued and it was Federico's turn to ask, which seemed logical to the woman. 

“How long have you been in Argentina?” 

“Eleven days.” 

“Did you like Buenos Aires?” 

"I barely had time to get to know it. I had to travel to Rosario, Cordoba and Mendoza. In each place I could only take a bus for sightseeing. And answering your question ... yes, I liked a lot what I saw and I have already made the decision to come another time on a private tour.” 

"It means that you just came on a business trip?" 

"Yes, actually a work trip, with the expenses paid by my employer.” 

“Who do you work for?” 

Lena gave the name of a renowned high-end clothing company. 

“And what do you do there?” 

“I'm an architect. I choose sites for points of sale of our products and direct the construction and decoration of the premises according to the norms and the international style of the company.” 

"You make the decisions?" 

“Yes, based on protocols established by the firm.” 

"And who writes those protocols?" 

"To a large extent myself.” Lena laughed at saying this, “But then they are approved by the presidency and the Board of Directors.” 

"You are an important person." concluded the young man. 

"Only an employee with some standing." 

"So your company is now settling in Argentina?" The phrase was somewhere between a question and a statement. 

“Yes, they have decided that growing tourism makes the country an attractive place for sales.” 

"Your job sounds like a position with a lot of responsibility. Are you satisfied?” 

“Yes, I like my profession and what I do is very rewarding.” 

Lena pondered the boy's question. She had not asked it herself recently and was actually very reasonable. The professional side of her life was actually very successful and she secretly wished that the other facets were successful to the same extent, but kept the remark to her. At the same time the questions confirmed her opinion about the intelligence of her travel mate. 

The plane had already reached its cruising altitude, and the flight attendant announced that dinner was to be served, actually a brunch. 

"Where are you going to stay in New York?" 

Federico gave the name of a hotel located in Lexington Avenue and 23rd Street, of an average category. 

"That's very close to Gramercy Park, where I live." Lena exclaimed. 

"I would like to meet with you." The phrase was spontaneous and the young man realized that it was a bit hasty. 

"I mean ... it would be nice to have some familiar face in a strange city." 

“Yes of course. I'll give you my phone number and address." Although she did not want to acknowledge herself, Lena was pleased with the request from her traveling companion. 

After dinner the lights in the cabin dimmed, and the sounds were reduced to passengers coughing and some child's crying. Lena and Federico continued talking quietly until finally the woman was asleep. 

 

The lights went on and the pilot announced that breakfast would be served soon since the arrival at New York City would happen soon. 

"You slept through the night." Federico observed. 

"I'm so busy in my job that I have to take every opportunity to sleep. Have you have not slept?” 

"Fitfully. The seat is a bit short for my legs ... and besides I guess the prospect of arriving at New York keeps me excited.” 

At the end of the breakfast and before closing the folding table Lena extracted a paper and a pen from her purse. 

"I'm going to give you my phone number and address. Since the cell phone cannot be switched on due to the proximity of the landing, I will write it down on paper.” 

 

When the turbines were turned off all the passengers rushed to take their luggage from the upper compartments. Federico lowered Lena´s case and his own. They both started to move together and descended from the aircraft in the middle of the human tide. They kept talking until they arrived at Migrations but then they had to separate, since she woman joined the fast moving line of American residents, while Federico had to join the slow line of foreigners. 

"Call me when you want!" exclaimed the woman as they had to separate, trying to hide her anxiety. 

 

After a while Lena looked at the boy. His tall, thin silhouette was now visible from a distance. The woman's memory had engraved his face, his handsome features, the green color of his eyes and his reddish hair. She could not help a sigh.

VOLUME TWO: TITANIC
She had not expected to find herself standing here aboard the largest cruise liner in the world, a Third Class passenger, staring back at the ever shrinking dock of her native Southampton, wondering where she was headed, how she would get there, and whom she would become upon the other side.
Yet, here she was at midday on a cold, windy April 10, staring out at a myriad of faces she, thankfully, did not recognize, wearing someone else's dress, her hair down and billowing in the breeze, leaving everything behind, starting anew.
Well, perhaps not everything. The fresh wounds mingled with old scars, both figuratively and literally, and she couldn't help but think about the baggage she carried with her, despite the one small carpetbag she had stowed below deck earlier before coming aboard to fake a smile and wave at strangers. It would take some time to let the lingering memories fade, let the wounds heal, let the scars dissipate. At least now, on this new journey, she was compelled to breathe a small sigh of relief, knowing there was little chance that anyone with knowledge of her former existence, with the exception of the woman standing next to her and her young family, would likely be within a thousand miles of her location in just a few days' time. The acceptance of this information was enough to coax the forced smile to meet her eyes. Perhaps she would have some semblance of peace at last and the opportunity to start again.
That was her initial thought, anyway, until she felt the piercing sting of a penetrating gaze from over her right shoulder and glanced up to realize at least one of her problems had followed her after all.
Gasping in recognition, she turned quickly, directing her stare back at the crisp blue water below her. Though she had not intended to cause a stir, she caught the attention of her companion at her side. With an annoyed smirk, Kelly gave her only partial attention, continuing to wave with one hand as she held her baby against her shoulder. "Meg? What could possibly be the matter now?" she asked through clenched teeth, in her thick Irish accent, bouncing the impatient babe as she did so. "We're launchin'. You can't possibly still be worried that we've been followed."
She was very much aware of the fact that Kelly was no longer obligated to tolerate her paranoia and that the shift in their relationship would allow her a looser tongue were she so inclined to begin to vocalize her disposition, not that their previous arrangement had ever been much of a hindrance to Kelly's self-expression. Nevertheless, Meg's current state of being unsettled was not at all unwarranted, and the weight of those green eyes still bore through the back of her skull; she could feel it. "He's here!" she replied, gesturing only slightly for her friend to look up at the deck above them.
The annoyance was still very detectable in Kelly's tone. She did not even bother to turn her head. "What do you mean he's here?" she asked, the lilt of her brogue accent coming through even more with the perturbed nature of the statement.
Meg sighed. "Up there. On the First Class Deck. He's on the boat!"
Kelly's smile was completely gone now. Her youngest daughter fussed a bit, and she shifted her to the other shoulder. "How can he possibly be here?" she asked. "He had an appointment with your uncle just this afternoon. He wouldn't cancel. He wasn't scheduled to be aboard. Are you sure?"
"Look!" Meg insisted. As Kelly began to turn around, Meg's small, well-groomed hand sprang out to catch her shoulder. "Be more discreet!" she implored. "I don't want to draw any more attention to myself! He's already looking at us!"
It was Kelly's turn to sigh now. "Jesus, Mary, and Joseph," she mumbled. "Here, take the baby," she insisted, shoving the child over to her friend, who opened her arms just in time. Kelly pretended to be looking for someone along the lower deck promenade where they stood. By now, her curious behavior had drawn the attention of her husband and older daughter who stood next to them, but neither were yet inclined to ask exactly what was going on. Instead, Daniel turned back to his four-year-old daughter, Ruth, whose fiery red hair, the same shade as her mother's, wafted in the wind, as she made endless inquiries about the other boats moored at the White Star Dock, one of which, The New Yorker, had gone a bit rogue only a few moments ago.
Kelly, eventually, turned her attention to the deck above them as instructed, and after surveying the situation much longer than Meg was comfortable with, she finally turned back around. "You're hallucinatin', darlin'. I see plenty of handsome rich men, but I don't think your betrothed is among them."
"What?" Meg replied, eyes crinkled in disbelief. "Yes, he is. I saw him with my own eyes." Without giving it much thought, she turned and looked directly back at the spot where he had been standing. Kelly was right. He wasn't there, or if he was, he was obscured by the hundreds of other passengers attempting to gain a view of The New Yorker being towed back to dock. "He was right there, I swear!" Meg insisted, her shawl flipping about as she swirled back to face her friend.
"Keep your voice down," Kelly warned, glancing around again. "Or else you really will have unwanted attention."
Meg wanted to argue, though she knew Kelly was right. With a huff, she turned back to face the rippling blue surface beneath them. Despite Kelly's insistence that she was only seeing a manifestation of one of her most prevalent fears, she was quite certain she had, in fact, seen her fiancé staring down at her from above. She would recognize those stunning green eyes anywhere. While the fact that he had been looking directly at her was cause to think he knew who she was and had recognized her, despite the oddness of their prior arrangement and her guise, she could only hope that he had not detected her deception.
Thankfully, they were aboard the largest passenger ship ever built where there was an understood arrangement that First Class passengers and Steerage were not to interact. The likelihood that she would encounter him again was highly implausible.




ID Johnson creates characters you'll want to have as your best friends with antagonists you'll love to hate. Her love for all things princess-y compelled her to write her first medieval romance at fifteen, and she hasn't stopped writing since. Now, her plots are a little more complex, her topics a little more mature, and her romances often more intense, but she's never lost the love she felt the first moment she breathed life into a character over twenty years ago.
