A Kindle Fire is actually a really great tablet. I owned "one" quite a few years ago and for some odd reason it always seemed to break whenever it was nearing the end of it's warranty. The warranty on it was for a year and each time it broke, they just sent a new one with a renewed warranty. They also always included a new charger. 

The name of the Kindle actually got updated each time it was replaced to (Name)'s 2nd/3rd/4th/... Kindel Fire.

I had mine 9 years ago, but I'd still consider it a good option. In the span of ~3/4 years I think I ended up on a 5th Kindle.

When the flash of light was gone Cole and Leo saw something amazing. Chloe's scratch marks were gone and she was no longer bleeding. But at the same time something bad happened Crystal was passed out on the floor. Cole and Leo ran up to crystal. They tryed waking her up. Chloe woke up and said " What happened?" Chloe then looked over to see Crystal passed out on the floor. Then Chloe noticed that her scratch marks were gone and she wasn't bleeding anymore. Chloe got up and walked over to crystal. Cole and Leo was worried they were scared because crystal was still passed out. Chloe picked up crystal and told Cole and Leo " Follow me to the medical den." They walked over to the medical den. Kindle the medical wolf said" what happened to her?" Chloe said " I don't quite know but I think the boys could explain." Cole and Leo told Kindle what happened. Kindle and Chloe was shocked to hear what happened. Kindle said " I don't know how to handle this but just let her rest she is probably very drained." Chloe Said " Thanks Kindle we will head back to our den Again thanks for the help."Then Chloe carried crystal back to the den and Cole,leo followed. When they were back at the den Chloe put crystal down to let her rest.Leo asked " mom is something wrong with crystal?" Chloe looked at Leo and said " No dear crystal is just drained from using all that energy to heal me now dear just lay down next to your sister and go to sleep." Leo and Cole layed next to crystal to keep her warm and cuddle up. Chloe was so scared because of the state Crystal was in. Out of no where Crystal began to glow and slowly lift up in the air. Chloe got up and tryed to grab Crystal but she got shocked. Chloe didn't know what to do in that moment. Chloe felt hopeless she was so concerned on what was going on with crystal.But when Chloe was watching Crystal float she noticed something off she couldn't believe it at all. Crystal was changing....

    这要是新型的屏幕也能显示彩色该有多好，那个时候，甚至手机的屏幕都能被更换了。
　　黄梦寒以前用过室友的kindle，在写论文的时候，需要查阅大量的文献，所以有一个长时间观看也不会伤眼的电子墨水屏的电子阅读设备，是很幸福的一件事情。
　　但是用kindle的时候，有一点快把黄梦寒烦死了，最后还是有用回了电脑。
　　黄梦寒收集到的有很多pdf人资料，放到kindle上面，需要几分钟才能同步过去，这还好。
　　但是在6英寸上面阅读pdf的体验实在是……一言难尽。
　　竖屏看，能把人的眼睛给瞅瞎，伤不伤眼不知道，肯定能锻炼视力，视力不好的都看不清楚那么小的文字，黄梦寒也是在那个时候才真正理解了一个成语的意思——蝇头小字。
　　那文字真的和苍蝇的脑袋似的，就那么一小点，几乎微不可查。
　　既然竖屏看有这个问题，那就横屏看吧。
　　横屏看文字倒是大了一些，但是有另一个问题也很烦人。
　　pdf的文档是一页一页的，横屏看的时候每屏显示的文字多余一页的三分之一，但是小于二分之一。
　　kindle上面的软件整的，一页需要点击三次，前两页还好，但是到了第三页，他最下面是当前页的最下面，最上面显示的文字不是第二页的最后，是第二页的中间的内容。
　　每次看到一页的最后一屏的时候，黄梦寒为了找到自己看到了哪里，都需要花费很长的时间去寻找，用户体验极差。
　　还不如我国的一个叫做多看的软件做的好，多看这个软件，他是粗粮公司开发的一个软件，可以在水果手机和安卓手机上面使用。
　　多看这个软件在手机上有连续观看的选项，开启之后就能在手机上面连续的看下一页，不会遇到kindle上面那种尴尬的问题，一页必须分三屏才可以。
　　另外他还可以，手动的拖动一点一点的向下滑，这在用了电子墨水屏幕的设备上是一种奢望，因为电子墨水屏的刷新率是一个很大的问题。
　　他上面还有裁减的功能，遇到影印版的pdf文献，甚至可以把边边角角裁掉只看最重要的一部分。
　　这样无形中就增大了屏幕的可使用的面积。
　　听说是有人把kindle越狱后能刷上这个系统。
　　但是毕竟不是原装的，刷上之后，设备死机的概率还有耗电率都明显的上升了。
　　显然第二智慧科技生产的这种叫做智慧电子阅读器的产品，考虑到了kindle上面的那种不合理的设计，根据这种新型屏幕的特点给出了两个解决方案。
　　和手机一样，第一就是可以连续翻页，第二就是可以手动一点点的滑动。
　　“没有数据线，如果我有一些资源，怎么传过来？”黄梦寒向店员询问。
　　“这个简单，你看到了首页的个人图书馆了吗？这里，对就是这里……”店员一边说一边给黄梦寒指出来在哪里进入个人图书馆。
　　“这里有两个，一个是云端的，一个是本地的。云端的图书馆顾名思义，这里面存放的书籍都是在大后端，而本地的就是从云端下载到本地的书籍。”
　　“至于怎么把书放到云端，有好几种方式可以进行，第一也可以利用想kindle那样类似的，用邮件推送的方式，把一个邮箱加入到信任邮箱列表，然后用这个邮箱向一个自定义的邮箱发带有附件的邮件就可以自动同步到云端，这样的速度是毫秒级别的，不想kindle那样，需要十多分钟。”
　　“第二种也是很常见的，就是公众号那样的，在深信上看到什么好的文章可以直接推送过来，不过我们做的更广泛一些，可以在深信上面也可以在球球上面，直接绑定了自己的账号，然后退送过去，当然了，时间也是毫秒级别的。”
　　“第三种，可以用球球账号，加一个固定的好友账号，然后把书籍或者其他附件直接发给他，发完之后，就可以在电子阅读器上的云端图书馆这里看到他的身影，只需要点击一下下载就能下载到本机。”
　　“第四种，如果你使用的是生物计算机，那么在里面的浏览器里面，通过简单的设置就能在右键菜单里面看到推送到电子阅读器的选项。”
　　“第五种，如果使用的是生物计算机，系统级别就支持推送到电子阅读器，如果你的这个账号注册过电子阅读器，右键点击电子阅读器可以识别的文件格式的文件时候，就会有一个选项是推送到电子阅读器上面，可以通过这样的方式来进行推送，当然了，如果你嫌这个菜单碍眼，可以通过简单的操作去掉的。”
　　“那这样的推送的方式还真是推陈出新了，没有想到第二智慧科技居然把一个简单的提送功能都玩出花来了。”黄梦寒对于这点还是给予了肯定。
　　“这些书城里面的书版权怎么说，如果购买的话怎么购买？”黄梦寒问了她关心的另一个问题。
　　“书的版权问题，你不用担心，这些全部是正版的，没有盗版，这些版权都是由我们的王路王总还有杨翰林杨总和很多家电子出版社共同讨论的结果。”
　　“购买的方式有两种，第一种就是单独购买，比如你就喜欢某一本书，那么你可以单独购买这个本书，电子书的价格比实体书的价格便宜很多，原因就是因为实体书需要印刷、装订、传输、放到实体店或者网点售卖，中间经过的环节太多了，每一个环节都是成本的增加。”
　　“第二种方式，也是现在有人正在尝试的模式，那就是包月或者包年的读书服务。这种方式非常简单，和现在很多的视频播放软件类似，通过冲会员的方式，可以观看付费的影片，这个服务就是那种意思，只要交钱，就能看一些付费的书籍。”
　　“第一种方式我懂，但是第二种方式我知道有一些弊端，比如kindle也有这个服务，他们的名字叫做 Kindle Unlimited。
　　但是上面有很多的书籍都没有加入到这个服务中，也就是我交钱了很多书籍仍然看不了，不知道你们对这个怎么看？”

After a great deal of preparation, Danika begins her new digital dragon's life in a very small way.

The game is a data mine, built to retell the old tales that humans have been telling each other since language was invented. It doesn't read your mind, but it reads your search history, your favorites, and your blogs. The "Living Jade Empire" is literally crafted from fables, legends, fantasies, and maybe just a bit of stardust.

But in the end, will the game be able to figure out what Danika wants most? Will the desires of other players take priority? Or, will playing it change her, until she desires what it can give her?

A journey is always made up of many small steps, and this game has still only just begun.

    众多小米高管你一言我一语的讨论过后，不少高管的目光，都悄然汇聚在坐在雷总右侧的人物，方哲身上。
　　如果说雷总是小米的创始人兼主心骨的话，那么方哲这个小米的联合创始人兼首席顾问，就是小米的定海神针，从小米创办至今，不管多大的困难和难题，只要放在方哲面前，都能被解决掉。
　　许多高管心里嘀咕，要不是第一代小米pad产品研讨会方总有事没在场，第一代小米pad又何至于失败？
　　雷总也察觉到高管们的神色和态度变化，不过他内心对此早就习以为常，别说他们，就连自己，不也眼巴巴的等着方哲给出意见么，不然何必特意请方哲过来。
　　方哲对高管们的态度变化若有所觉，待到会议室内的讨论声小了以后，他缓缓开口说道：
　　“刚才大家讨论的东西，都很有道理，在分析小米pad的产品定位之前，我想问大家一个问题，大家有没有听过或使用过，kindle这款产品？”
　　“kindle?方总说的是亚马逊旗下的那款电子书阅读器吗？”
　　“当然用过，我每天中午休息都会用它看半个小时电子书，现在就在我办公桌上放着呢！”
　　“听过，挺好用的。”
　　“kindle对电子书的支持不要太好，有种纸质书的质感。”
　　提到kindle，许多高管都赞不绝口，kindle的电子书阅读体验，比什么ipad，各种pad都要强大太多。
　　与此同时，一些高管心里也冒出疑惑，方总，不会想让小米pad学者kindle做电子书阅读器吧？
　　“看来知道的人还不少，kindle，是一款优秀的电子书阅读器，但实际上，我们也可以把它看做pad的一个子分类，苹果的ipad带火了pad市场，但没谁规定，pad的设计，系统，内容等等各方面，都要跟着苹果ipad去做！”方哲说道。
　　许多高管若有所思，听方总这意思，方哲属意小米pad，像kindle一样，从子分类或一个子功能做突破。
　　“做产品有两种做法，一种是做加法，一种是做减法。
　　做加法，求的是大而全，是希望满足所有用户的需求，这样的产品越做越复杂，越做越繁琐，不管是Android系统还是ios系统，经过这么多年的迭代更新，都已经衍生出太多冗余的东西。
　　我们买一款新的ipad，上面原装的应用和功能，有80%都是我们平常用不到的。
　　做减法，求的是极简模式，专注于核心功能，苹果的创始人乔布斯，他生前就是一个专注于极简模式的人，苹果早期的许多设计，都堪称极简模式的典范。
　　最经典的，便是苹果iphone，首先抛弃了手机按键，只保留了一个home键，这在当时的全球手机行业，都是极为大胆和经典的创新。
　　做加法和做减法两种产品思路各有利弊，前者适用于一款产品满足用户的核心需求后，慢慢满足用户的冗余需求，后者则适用于一款产品从零开始设计和制作的时候。
　　大家应该都知道，我们小米第一代MIUI，就是采用做减法的产品思路做出来的！”
　　方哲提到MIUI的历史，引起了雷总和部分元老级小米高管的共鸣。
　　小米创业的时候除了一帮人一无所有，他们只能由简入难，先做MIUI操作系统，再做硬件，而做MIUI系统，同样并非易事，Andriod系统那么多功能，靠他们团队内的几个工程师开发，没个一年半载的，怎么可能做出一个完整的Android系统？
　　是以，最开始的时候，MIUI的设计思路便是做减法，所有非用户迫切需要的核心功能，都不做！
　　也因此，第一代MIUI用了短短几个月的时间便做了出来，随后也因为它的极简模式，广受许多刷机爱好者的好评，待到后来小米手机1发布的时候，MIUI已经在全球积累了上百万用户，为小米手机的一炮而红，奠定了不小的基础。
　　“用做减法的思路做小米pad!”众多高管思索着方哲的这句话。
　　方哲的思路不可谓不创新，不可谓不大胆，要知道目前市场主流的pad，几乎都是照着苹果ipad的模子做的，pad跟手机采用同样的操作系统，pad几乎就是一个大屏幕的，阉割了部分功能的手机，如果按照方总所说的再做减法？又该怎么做呢？
　　“在我看来，小米pad只需要满足大部分pad用户的核心需求即可，其他的需求，没必要在意和满足。
　　目前市场上，用户购买pad的主要需求是什么？你们谁能告诉我答案？”方哲发问道。
　　“玩游戏！”
　　“看视频！”
　　“聊天！”
　　“看书！”
　　不同的高管给出了不同的答案，方哲抬手压下高管们纷乱不一的答案，点名小米市场部的负责人说道：“你来说，我想你提前应该做过市场调查了？”
　　被点名的小米市场部负责人点点头说道：“是的，就在这次研讨会之前，我们还随机对2000名不同品牌的平板电脑用户做了问卷调查。
　　其中57.1%用户，使用平板电脑的主要目的是为了看视频，排名第二和第三的，分别是移动游戏和网购，而在女性用户中，主要使用平板电脑看视频的比例更高达68.3%。”
　　嘶！68.3%，市场部的负责人说到这儿的时候，许多机智的小米高管，已经猜到了方总想说什么。
　　看视频！这才是目前用户购买平板电脑的主要用途！
　　看着小米高管们一个个若有所思的样子，方哲提点道：
　　“很多用户，尤其是女性用户，购买pad的主要目的就是为了看视频，手机屏幕太小，电脑携带不方便，pad是看网络视频的最佳工具，不管是在家里，公司，地铁，床上，沙发上甚至卫生间，任何有网络的地方，都可以用pad追剧看视频。
　　所以小米pad的需求和产品定位就很明确了，就是专门用来看视频和追剧的，只要把这块内容做好了，小米就足以在市场上站稳脚跟甚至取得不小的成绩！”

"Ryan, I need you to do something," I said quickly on speaker phone while Tyler fired up my truck. I intended to drive, but the two giant glasses of water and basket of chips weren't enough to completely sober me.
"Hey Mitch, what's up?" he asked with concern.
"Ryan, you need to get your family and get into the Taxi I'm about to send to you."
"Why is that?"
"It's about Jamie. I really need you to do this without asking questions."
Ryan was quiet for a moment. "Did you find her?"
"Not yet, but I have a feeling I know where she is. Pack enough clothing for a few days, and leave all electronics at home. I mean everything. I'm sending you to a hotel."
His voice was apprehensive. "Mitch, I'm not sure Leslie will be up for this, and this is a busy season for my work."
"It'll be fine, I promise. Please. I've already taken care of it," I said while punching the hotel info into my phone and making the reservation.
"Okay, should I be worried?"
"Only if you stay at home. And Ryan?"
"Yeah?"
"Bring your gun."
"Mitch, that sounds like I should be worried," he said sternly. "Don't go and do something stupid without talking to Hendry."
My frown deepened. "I'm on my way to talk to him now. Don't worry, I'm going to consult with him on what to do next."
"What's going on, Mitch?" Tyler demanded. "Who are we going to talk to now?"
"Hendry."
"Why?"
"I think I know who Rod is."

"I need to talk to Hendry," I asked the receptionist from behind the desk. It was the same woman as always. The two goons who worked with Hendry were standing in their typical spot.
"Wouldn't be a typical week without a visit from you," Grimson said, approaching Tyler and me.
"Yeah, what are you whining to Hendry about today?" Slaydor added, standing on the other side of me so that I was sandwiched between them.
"It's important," I said to the receptionist, ignoring the two officers.
"That's what you said last time," she sighed, fanning herself with a piece of paper, not even meeting my eyes. "I'll see if he's back there. It's mid-afternoon, so he's normally getting coffee around this time."
"Take a seat, buddy," Slaydor said, nudging me forcefully with his elbow.
Tyler stood behind me with his arms crossed, his thumb on his chin. The scowl on his face was typical. "Who are those assholes?" he asked as we sat down. "Seem like douche-bags to me."
"You got that right."
Tyler and I watched the officer's move around the waiting area, joking and reading the wanted ads. "Remember what we talked about in the car?" I murmured to Tyler.
He nodded. "Might be harder to do with those two idiots here."
I rapidly started texting on my phone. "Don't worry, we've got backup."
Tyler scowled. "You better be right about this."
"You told me to trust my instincts."
"Yeah, that was before I knew there were two guys twice the size of me," he hissed.
"Conklin, Detective Hendry will see you. Grimson, escort him down," the receptionist ordered. He opened the door for me as I shot out of my chair.
"Ten minutes," I mumbled to Tyler.
"You haven't called," Grimson said as we walked down the hallway.
"Didn't know you were waiting."
"Figured you'd have trouble getting a hold of Hendry. He isn't an easy man to find most days."
"I know how to find him, but I may be giving you a call soon."
We reached Hendry's office, and he was all smiles when I walked through. "Mitch, how can I help you?" Grimson stood at the door, and I looked him up and down. "Go ahead back in the waiting room. He's harmless." Hendry chuckled.
I smiled as I took a seat on the opposite side of Hendry. "So, Mr. Conklin, what have you got for me today?"
"Nothing in particular. I just wanted to tell you I've been thinking a lot lately." Hendry rose a brow, setting aside a stack of papers he'd been going through. "I mean, about Jamie. She probably does want space. I still don't think she has anything to do with Nathan's attack, but knowing her, she probably blew off breakfast all together and hopped on a plane to Costa Rica like you said."
He bobbed his head from side to side as though he were agreeing with me. "We will only know once Nathan remembers. But you could be right. She might not even know he was attacked."
I forced a laughed. "You're probably right. She's a mysterious one. She was something, though. Really, the way she'd look at me, it was like she was staring right into my soul. She was probably just playing games with my heart, not to quote a Backstreet Boy song or anything." We both laughed. "But hell, she was an animal in bed." Hendry's lip curled upward as though he was trying to hide his expression.
"I mean, she loved to be the dominant one, but then she finally turned it over to me toward the end there. Got all gooey-eyed, if you know what I mean."His brows furrowed. I reached for a pen and twirled it in between my fingers.
"You know, I had the same apprehensions as you all did, about Nathan, I mean. I thought she loved him, and she did, but she admitted that she wanted more with me." My words slowed as I took in how Hendry was watching me now. Always the detective, always looking for information.
"She told me she loved me, you know," I lied. "I bet if I went to Costa Rica, I could bring her back."
"Is this a ploy to get me to give you that address?"
I shook my head. "Nah, I'm getting over her. Called that blonde from New Year's Eve. She was pretty wild."
Hendry smirked. "Glad to hear the heart is healing."
"It is. Thank you, for all you've done. You know, with Nathan and all."
"Comes with the job." He smiled, gesturing around his office.
"Yeah, and the stalker letters. Crazy, but I remember her talking about an ex-boyfriend."
He was interested now. "What about him? Do you remember a name?"
"Never mentioned a name, only talked about how he was into asphyxiation. Not really my thing, but I don't know much about it."
Hendry spoke quickly. "It's a domination/BDSM term where one partner puts pressure on the airway. Causes stimulation."
I nodded. "So with their hands? People get turned on by that?"
He bobbed his head up and down, his pupils dilating. "Guess it's popular among the BDSM community. We see a lot of accidental deaths from it, though. Have to know how to do it correctly."
"Hmm."
I stood from my seat, getting the information I needed to hear and see from Hendry. "Well, thanks again, for everything." I glanced around his office. "You still getting married?"
His grin widened. "Yes, soon, in fact."
"That's great. Surprised you don't have any pictures of the lucky lady?"
Hendry smiled as he stood to walk me out of his office. "I'm a detective. Most people I deal with aren't my friends." He chuckled.
"Oh, come on, let me see her. I bet she's a looker," I teased, nudging his shoulder like we were old friends.
He laughed. "I don't like to share."
I simply smiled at him, my hatred for the fucker growing. I glanced down the hall, noticing the woman at the front desk walking toward me and Tyler sneaking through the entrance and into the receptionist's space.
"I almost forgot!" I added, walking back into Hendry's office. "I found another letter, thought I should give it to you. Don't want to get accused of tampering with evidence again." I tossed the letter on his desk, then carefully opened it up so he could read it.

I know who you love, and I'm not afraid to hurt them if you don't cooperate.
And stop wearing red. I hate that color on you.

"You probably already figured this out, but did you know this is a special type of paper?" Maybe it wasn't, but I wanted to fuck with him and try to get another expression from his twisted face. Hendry only examined the letter, not responding to my question right away.
"It's a certain type of artist's paper from the weight of it. I guess you can only get it at a handful of stores, one of them being in Point Canal."
"Interesting," Hendry replied.
"Yeah, for all we know this guy could still be there, still writing those letters, wanting Jamie as bad as the rest of us." I chuckled. Hendry's eyes flicked to me for a split second, then back to the paper.
"I'll have forensics look into this for prints."
"Great, thanks." I blocked the doorway from Hendry, noticing Tyler heading back into the waiting area.
"I'll see you around then?"
Hendry took his eyes off the paper and gave me a sincere smile. "Look forward to it."
"Have a great day, Broderick."
Hendry's eyes narrowed in question as I walked backward down the hallway, never taking my eyes off him. Once I reached the door, I nudged it open with my shoulder, power walking to the exit. Tyler jumped to his feet and we both took a huge breath of air as the door closed to the station. Tyler's hands found his knees as we stood by my truck in the street.
"Holy, shit. That was nerve-wracking."
"Did you get the address?" I asked, feeling out of breath myself.
Tyler glared at me. "Yes. That woman does not charm easily."
"You got it, though?"
"I said yes, didn't I?" he answered grumpily. "Hey, is thatª"
I followed his line of sight, my lips turning into a grin. "Tori? Yes."
"Her boyfriend came in and said someone was trying to attack his pregnant girlfriend. Both those idiots went running outside."
I smirked as I opened my car door. "I told you I had it covered."
Tyler laughed under his breath as he walked to the passenger side door. "Now what?"
"Where's Becca? Is she here or in Grand Rapids?"
"She's working at the office with Corey. Why?"
"We need to go see her." My engine started with a roar, and I pulled onto the road to head to the office.
"What's wrong? Do you think she isn't safe?" Tyler asked with concern.
"She'll be fine," I reassured him. "I just want to make sure we've got everything covered before we go through with this."
"I sure hope you're right. Otherwise, you'll be in a jail cell, and fuck if I'm getting your ass out."
I smirked. He'd bail me out in a heartbeat.


"Hey, guys!" Becca greeted, jumping from her seat to give Tyler a hug. "What are you two doing here? You're about an hour early."
I searched her desk, finding what I was looking for. "This is your phone, right?"
"Yeah, I just got a new caseªhey!" she shrieked as I tossed it into the fish tank. "What the hell, Mitch?" Tyler glared at me but held Becca back.
"I know where Jamie is."
Becca's eyes widened. "He thinks he knows," Tyler added.
"If I'm right," I glared at Tyler, "which I am, you need a new phone. I've seen what this guy can do to surveillance footage, so I know he's good with electronics. Is your Kindle here?" I asked, searching her desk.
She ran over to me, grabbing her purse. "Don't you dare throw that in the fish tank too!"
"Tyler, she needs to get rid of her electronics," I said sternly, trying to grab her purse.
Tyler gave Becca the puppy dog face. "I promise I'll buy you a new one." I yanked on her purse, pulling it from her grasp and searching for the electronic.
"Tyler!" He reached for her, but she shunned away from him. "What does this have to do with Jamie?"
"That fucker who kidnapped her tracks everything and everyone she loves."
"What about your phone?" she sneered.
"He doesn't believe she cares about me," I said, my words causing more pain than I thought they would. "I'm sorry about your stuff, but I have to do this."
My eyes found the Kindle, ripping it from its case and tossing it in the water. Becca sighed as it fell to the bottom of the tank.
She narrowed her eyes at me, then headed for the door. "Let's go get my best friend."
"Whoa, whoa, you're not coming with us. You have to go to the hotel with Jamie's family. Keep them calm," I pleaded, catching up to her in the parking lot.
She looked to Tyler, and he nodded in agreement. "It's safer for you there, baby doll." Her pissed off demeanor melted when he walked toward her, pulling her into his arms. I rolled my eyes at their affection.
"Send her in a cab to the hotel. We need to figure out Nathan's safety next."
Tyler nodded, then walked with his arm around her to the edge of the street. "Mitch?" Becca said before they begin moving. "Be careful."
I smiled before walking to my truck, searching my phone for a contact while I waited for Tyler. "Hey, Kobiashi?" I asked the second he picked up.
"Mr. Conklin, didn't we have a meeting an hour ago?" he asked in annoyance.
"Yeah, I know. Look, this is going to sound weird, but my mom says some shady figure is creeping around Nathan's room. I know you have the best security in Miami, so would you be willing to send a guy over for the night?" I asked, knowing my kiss-ass voice might help persuade him.
"Only because it's Nathan. I sure hope whatever it is you had going on instead of meeting with me was important."
"I promise I'll make it up to you."
"You damn well better," he grumbled. "I'll send over two of my best security guards right away."
"I need one more favor." Kobiashi was silent as he waited for me to continue. "Can you send a few more over to the Hampton Inn on Broadmoor?"
"Are you kidding me?"
"No, it's important. Please," I begged.
"Fine. They'll be over there as soon as I make a call."
I closed my eyes and sighed in relief. My mother was with Nathan, and she wouldn't leave his side. Now I knew they both would be safe, and Jamie's family and Becca would be too, as long as they didn't leave their rooms and followed my instructions.
Tyler climbed into the driver side and turned the car on to head to my place. "We need a few things, and then we have to wait until everyone is in place before we can strike."
"All right," he sighed, buckling his seat belt. "I sure hope you're confident it's really him."
I ignored Tyler's skepticism. "I've got one more call to make."
I hoped my instincts were on point about the person who'd answer on the other line.

Even though Spirit Forge University was the premier institution for training blacksmiths and artisans, it did not have a monopoly on the sale and manufacture of armaments. Rather, a good number of disciples from the Armament Sect enrolled in Spirit Forge University, and upon graduation, they would return to their sect before opening their own shops elsewhere.
Needless to say, the Seven Stars branch of the armament store was owned by the Armament Sect (not Spirit Forge University, because academic institutions weren't supposed to run shops and conduct businesses).
"What should I get?"
The armor was too unwieldy and I doubted it would help me. Since my skills focused on speed and evasion, wearing armor might weigh down on my body heavily, hindering my movements. Not to mention, I was heading toward a volcanic chain, which meant that the metallic armor was just as likely to burn me after being heated up by the high temperatures. As any elementary school textbook could tell you, metal was an amazing conductor of heat.
Besides, I preferred talismans. They were not as sturdy as armor and didn't provide permanent protection – the duration of their effects was limited and they were one-use. But they were lighter, much cheaper (in the short-term, anyway – in the long term, the armor actually helped me save more money) and more flexible.
Honestly, for someone like me who had just received a large influx of cash, it was better to buy armor and equipment, but I preferred the flexible and lightweight talismans. Also, as an array practitioner, I needed to learn how to carve talismans eventually. According to Instructor Su Yan, formations and talismans were closely linked – they both required the practitioner to learn spirit runes. Formations were composed of more complex combinations of spirit runes, but in theory, if I could do formations, I could more easily learn how to make talismans.
"Spirit arrays and talismans are two mutually beneficial arts that complement each other very well," Su Yan had explained to me. "In order to draw spirit formations, you will have to learn spirit runes and esoteric symbols, and the runes on spirit talismans are actually much easier than the arcane symbols you've learned for spirit formations."
Su Yan had already taught me the basics of how to make talismans, which required me to purchase enchanted brushes, enchanted ink and talismanic paper. They were all consumables, which meant I had to spend a lot of credits on procuring these materials. Worse, I would probably burn most of them out before I eventually succeeded, which meant that learning how to make spirit talismans would be an expensive endeavor.
Fortunately, I had solved that problem with the cash I received from the Na Lan clan and Xia clan. For now, I decided to buy some spirit talismans so that I could learn the spirit runes etched into them. It would be easier to practice if I had something to refer to.
But since I was here already…
"Can I buy an enchanted brush, several vials of enchanted ink and several reams of talismanic paper?" I asked the shopkeeper. He blinked and nodded.
"Practicing how to make spirit talismans?" he asked. I nodded.
"Yeah."
"Excellent." The shopkeeper grinned and leaned over. "Since you're a student, I'll give you a discount. If you do manage to learn how to make spirit talismans, you can sell them to me. I'll make sure you're paid handsomely."
"Okay."
Honestly, I would earn more if I sold the spirit talismans on my own, without a middleman. But that would mean getting a business license…not to mention, I didn't have time to open my own store and wait for customers. Giving the shopkeeper a cut of my profits was worth the trouble and time I would save on if he handled all the business stuff for me.
"But it's not guaranteed that I'll be able to master it…"
"You look like a smart guy, so I believe in you." the shopkeeper showed me a thumb's up. I laughed, embarrassed, and wondered where he found the reason to be so confident in me. He must have read the question on my face, for he continued. "I always have a sharp eye for people, and my gut feeling tells me you'll succeed. And I'm never wrong."
"Uh, thanks."
Kai Li Si had never told me that I was a spirit array or spirit talisman master in the future, which didn't bode well. Then again, he never said I wasn't a spirit array or spirit talisman master either, so I doubted I was wasting my time with a fruitless endeavor.
Besides, the future wasn't set in stone. The whole reason why the demonic cultivators went through such lengths and took such risks returning through time and space to my current world was because they truly believed they could alter the future. So how could I lose to them?
With a wave of my hand, I thanked the shopkeeper again and left the store to return to the dorm room. After dropping off my practice materials in my room, I packed whatever talismans and equipment I thought I needed and took the bus to the train station, which would bring me to Central in no time at all.
The Mystical Volcanoes weren't on Xing Hao Island. They were located on some mysterious continent elsewhere, in yet another isolated pocket of space. That meant I needed an alternative form of transport to bring me to that mystical continent. Fortunately, Xing Hao Island was full of flying cars and flying motorbikes. When I saw them, I resolved to get my license sooner or later.
I wanted my own flying motorbike. For now, I decided to just get on a regular shuttle toward the mystical continent.
"Over here!" the driver shouted. "Last call for passengers wanting to go to the mystical continent!"
I had booked my seat online and gotten an electronic ticket, which I stored in my smartphone. That saved me a lot of trouble, and I was able to grab a seat after flashing my e-ticket toward the driver. He let me on, and I dragged my luggage with me as I boarded the bus. To my surprise, I saw that there weren't that many people on board the shuttle. A couple of mercenaries, a small group of teenage hikers in boots and leather jackets, and a lone cultivator who seemed like he intended to increase his strength by diving straight into battle. For some reason, even though he was seated in a luxuriously cushioned seat designed for maximum comfort, he was hugging his sword to his chest even as he snoozed. His head was leaning close to the sword's black, white and golden hilt, and his hands were clutching the black scabbard.
Despite the contemporary attire of everyone else in the shuttle, the swordsman stood out because of his ancient robes that made him look like a cosplayer. He also had long hair, tied neatly into a ponytail. His appearance was drawing curious stares, especially from the group of teenage hikers. They were sniggering under their breaths, and a couple of them even snapped pictures, presumably to upload them onto social media for likes and laughs.
Shaking my head, I took out my Kindle and began reading. This time, I had chosen one of Er Gen's novels. A Will Eternal or something like that, which had caught my attention because Ten Cents just posted the animated adaptation online.
Damn…The King's Avatar season 2 had already finished broadcasting, and the current season of Spirit Fox Matchmaker was nearing its end. I was running out of donghua to watch. And actually, I was watching A Will Eternal mostly because I enjoyed listening to GAI Zhou Yan's "A Will Eternal (Yi Nian Yong Heng)" song. That had to be one of the best donghua opening songs I had heard, along with Spirit Fox Matchmaker's amazing collection. Oh, and I also enjoyed Our Glory Road.
While I indulged in my hobbies, I noticed that the teenage hikers had diverted their attention toward me now, sniggering as stealthily as they could. Evidently, they thought I was a nerd and were mocking me for it. Seemed like they had too much time on their hands. To be fair, they were stuck in a shuttle bus with nothing better to do except wait until we got there…but then again, they could have spent their time making fun of people doing something more productive…like reading, for example. Or sleeping like the swordsman, because it was going to be a tough hike through whatever mountain or forest they planned to trek on in the mystical continent.
The bus driver waited a few more moments, several minutes past the appointed time. When he saw that there were no other passengers arriving, he sighed and climbed to his seat. Activating the PA system, he made an announcement.
"All right, we will be moving off right away. Buckle up your seatbelts, everybody. It's going to be a turbulent flight."
He didn't wait for the teenagers to voice their complaints. There was a lurch and the shuttle bus surged forward. Glancing out of the window, I watched as the vehicle launched toward the air, the ground below rapidly shrinking into what looked like a toy city. Then a map viewed from above, the massive island (almost the size of a continent), fading from view as clouds drifted past. Then everything outside the window turned into a mixture of deep blue and white wisps.
"Whoa!"
The teenagers were mesmerized by the view, pressing their faces against the window excitedly. Was this the first time they were leaving Xing Hao Island or something? Probably by themselves, without any parents or adult supervisors. The mercenaries were more sanguine, most likely having gotten used to the amazing view after the hundredth or so trip. They leaned back in their seats, quietly discussing among themselves, but careful not to speak about sensitive details regarding their mission. The swordsman continued to sleep, letting out a snore as his head lolled against his sword from the movement of the shuttle bus in the sky.
I spared the panorama one last view before I returned my attention to my book. I was enjoying some of Bai Xiao Chun's antics, though I also found a few of his stunts quite cheesy, which caused me to cringe. Humor, as always, was a hit and miss...even if it was a comedy story penned by someone as revered as Er Gen.
Damn, to think I tried to write a parody of his story, I Shall Seal the Heavens, by changing the title to I Shall Steal the Heavens. No wonder I got a lot of hate online. Admittedly, most of it was down to my awful writing, though. I could never write a good story. Probably because I never planned things through and made stuff up as I went along.
The journey took a lot less time than I expected. Even though the flying shuttle bus – which operated on spiritual qi, as all cultivator vehicles did – had to cover a vast distance, the driver announced that we were nearing our destination when hardly an hour had passed.
"Oh! I can't wait!"
"This will be a great trip!"
"I want to visit those mountains already!"
The teenagers were being teenagers as always, nosily chattering among each other as they looked out of the window. I shut my Kindle and glanced out too, unable to suppress my curiosity. Already the mystical continent was coming to view. Mentally, I knew that it was supposed to be much, much bigger than Xing Hao Island, but I couldn't compare the sizes from what I saw through the window. Even Xing Hao Island was so large that I could only see part of it – the coastlines, patches of forests, the mountains and rivers – through the window.
So there really was no sense of scale. Even so, the view below was breathtaking. There were a lot more mountains on the mystical continent, and from the distance I could see the volcano chain. The mystical volcanoes – I was sure of it. Massive plumes of smoke were belched from their peaks, red-hot lava streaking through black rock. They were an impressive sight, the elemental fury of nature contained within titanic forms that towered over everything else.
And growing among those slopes was the Mystic Fire Fruit.
From this distance, I could barely make out anything else, but I thought I saw gargantuan winged forms flocking around the volcanoes. Dragons? Drakes? Uh oh…if I could see their shapes from this distance, that spoke a lot about their immense sizes. In order to obtain the Mystic Fire Fruit, I would have to get past those gigantic guardians.
I briefly wondered why I was going so far for Xia Xing Yue. Yeah, I found her physically attractive – she truly deserved her reputation as the most beautiful goddess in the six academies of Xing Hao Island. Even among the rumored Four Great Beauties, she was said to stand above the other three. Or was it Five Great Beauties? I couldn't remember, and I honestly couldn't care less. Zhang Ping had all the details, but I wasn't going to ask him unless he brought it up again.
Even so, only an idiot would risk his life just to butter up a beauty. I was no simp, or at least I didn't think I was one. As for the rewards…after saving Na Lan Jie and Xia Hong Yi, I didn't need the credits. I could have just focused on practicing creating spirit talismans.
But I remembered the icy qi rampaging inside Xia Xing Yue's body when I saw her, and the sense of foreboding I felt. She might be confident that she could suppress it until she mastered her Frozen Cloud Sword Palace skills, but I felt uneasy leaving it to chance. Even if I didn't know her that well, I considered her a friend at least.
"We'll be landing in a few moments."
The shuttle bus dipped and I felt as if the bottom of my stomach had given way. Seconds later, the transport hit the ground and skidded to a stop. I felt my seatbelt press me back to my seat, arresting my momentum, and then I exhaled while steeling my resolve.
Whatever the reason, it was all academic. I had finally arrived on the mystical continent, and for better or for worse, I was going through this mission all the way to its end.

In the far future, in a distant realm ruled by cultivators, the demonic sects have conquered much of the Celestial Realm. Only one man stands between them and total domination - the leader of the resistance, the Heaven and Earth Saint who united the remnants of the orthodox sects.
Unable to defeat him, the demonic sects decide to send demonic cultivators back through time and space - to the distant past, where Shu Cong is still a young teenager on Earth - to...uh, Terminate him before he eventually becomes the leader of the resistance.
However, the orthodox sects have also sent their own agents back in hopes that at least one of them would reach him in time, to train him for the upcoming battle...
