The army of 9 year olds are welcoming you.

In lanes 1-4, there isn't really anyone of note; just some boys aged 7-10. The 10 year olds have a very distinct advantage in that they're most likely taller and their muscles may be more developed.

Also, 10 year olds are more used to roughhousing, making their skin near impenetrable.

This has nothing to do with swimming but it's a neat fact.

In lane 7 however, I feel like I recognize that girl...hmmmm, maybe when she starts swimming I'll remember her? I can usually know who the female swimmer is on the Olympics Channel with the way they swim.

For example, Jakabos, one of the ho- best female swimmers has long arms; this means that her movements are wider, more powerful and not as sharp. Her elbows bend a bit more as well.

[what a freaking pervert you are. You pay attention to the female swimmers, whatever. But now? You look at their elbows?]

'Oy...you make me sound like some weirdo. I look at their swimming styles! It's for science! Those late nights watching FINA and the Olympics Channel are NOT just for my pleasure!'

As Feelie, mentions that, I hear the whistle and the kids on the diving boards jump into the water...needless to say, it's a bit of a disaster.

The kids in lane 1, 2, 6 and 9 all had their goggles pulled off of their heads, making their eyes get exposed to the pool water.

For me, I'm personally fine with it and have been training without goggles with Seung-ri Jim for about 3 months to get used to it. Other children, however?

Nuh-uh!

They all stop in their tracks and start floating above the water by lightly kicking and make their way to the poolside. They are rubbing their eyes and lane 1 and 9 are both crying.

It's very hard not to laugh but I need to try! Holding on is key to developing a relationship with Coach K. 

Even though swimming isn't a team sports, you still need to show some decency when handling teammates. In fact, there was this one story where a disgruntled teammate was repeatedly bullied and harassed by this better swimmer.

The bully swimmer was able to get to the FINA finals while the bullied swimmer was eliminated at the quarterfinals. Annoyed and jealous, right before the swim, she broke into the other swimmer's hotel room and smashed up her legs.

That ruined both of their careers. Literally no chance at redemption all becuase you decided to call a kid a "poopy-head" in 3rd grade and called them "dumdum" in middle school.

You feel good about it now? That the little name calling will get you forever ruined from the legs down, huh? Think about it...

[that's such an isolated case that it's stupid you even mention it. However! I need to agree. Respect your teammates and they will respect you. It costs nothing to be nice]

Ignoring the haters by focusing my entire attention to the race, looking at lane 7 and lane 3 as both of them are the quickest so far from off the bat.

Both look like they have great technique. Sharp elbows, thumb in first and kicks never above the water. They look very promising.

The other lanes: lane 4, lane 5 and lane 8, are all mediocre. Well, at least they are still young. This age is the perfect age for improving your swimming. 

Despite the fact that they suck so much that a person with cerebral palsy with 10 kilogram weights could out swim them, they are fairly good for their age.

Right now in this race, it's a 100 meter freestyle. The pool is 25 meters long meaning that it's 2 laps; back and forth.

(A.N) lol. So, to avoid any confusion for the non-swimming people or people who are still confused by now about what a lap is; a lap is a round trip. Going to the other side of the pool and coming back is a lap; not JUST going to the other side.

It's like watching two of the best people compete against each other: Senna v. Prost, Rosberg v. Hamilton and Celtics v. Lakers just to name a few.

Imagine that but much, much, much slower than Formula 1 cars or basketball games. These are kids who having even lived a decade, give them a break.

By the 2nd lap, both of them are dead tired but they keep on going. Their grit is immense that's for sure. Most 8-9 year olds can't even continue after one lao and these kids are crushing it!

On the return back to the starting point, both are constantly breathing on both sides, even taking little rests. The girl on lane 7 is almost crying while the boy is clutching his stomach.

Honestly, I don't think this is what coach K intended. If you are going to make a bunch of barely children swim 100 meters and expect them to finish, you'd be dead wrong. Wrong and stupid. Stupid and wrong.

Lanes 4, 5 and 8 are all so tired they are just floating in the pool and trying to get out; they quit after reaching 3/4ths of the first lap.

Lane 7 comes in first and then lane 3. Coach K's stopwatch showed us that the girl on lane 7 got a time of 1:39.56. In all honesty, that is an absolutely stunning time. For her age and for that distance, not many can do it.

The boy was no slouch either, clocking in at 1:45.32. Both are amazing times don't get me wrong and I'll probably see them in competitions in the future. But...hard work is nothing in face of talent! And I have both!

[by talent you mean me, the best system ever, Feelie?]

Feelie interrupts my feel good streak by saying I don't have talent! Again! I recall his words and get a bit agitated. You mean to say I didn't work hard? You little system! I worked hard!

Thinking about his words more however, I realize something...he is getting more and more like me! Before, he used to be more modest and polite with his insults, calling me "scoundrel" and "rascal". 

But now?

He prefers uplifting himself by pushing me down! He is me! I made him like me! Mwuahahahahaha!!! You fool, Feelie! I have found you all out and your codes are being read as we think!

'Awwwwww... would ya look at that, it seems I've rubbed off on you a little bit! Hic...hic!...I raised that boy...'

I ignore him and focus on the next match and the encouraging words of Coach K. Honestly, as a coach, his skills on pep talks and motivational speeches are top notch.

Some of the best coaches are even better at motivating their pupils than at the damn sport. Some examples of this are Rob Ryan of the Cowboys, Rex Ryan of the Jets and so on.

I know one word you could say, your honor, and that is "Guilty"!!!

Coach K goes over to the two troopers gives them a big pat on their backs. After all, they deserve it after showing their perseverance.

"Hey, Chang-min ah and Mi-sun ah, both of you were absolutely amazing out there. Great job"

""Un!""

After he pats them on their heads, he lets them take a well deserved rest and focuses on the next batch of swimmers, silently hoping they are at least 70% of the two perseverance monsters.

'Hmmmm...wait a minute. Why does Mi-sun sound familiar?...hmmmm, Olympics? FINA?.....oh wait! ASEAN! OH DAMN!

Now I realize who Mi-sun is; a bronze medalist at ASEAN. Despite her "only" getting a bronze medal, that's much, much better than most people out there. She is incredibly talented and from the news interviews, has a great personality.

She stopped swimming after she got 6th in the recent ASEAN in my previous life and settled down to marry some chaebol with a fake-ass hairline, obviously tucked in stomach and Botox inflated lips.

Like a damn kendoll! Look at me! My hair is so much thicker than his even when I was 40 and bald! I honestly felt bad for her but checking the stock market, I didn't feel too bad anymore.

A hint why: she was worth over 10 billion won just from marrying him. 

Maybe I'll try motivating her in the future to swim more or something. Hopefully she doesn't get ri- doesn't quit swimming this time around.

She was a great swimmer and many men loved watching her.

'Yeah! A very se- great swimmer and an amazing athlete! Her looks are only 10/10 anyways!' 

The third batch of people are getting ready and I'm looking forward to seeing how So-young compares to the other 7-10 year olds...

She turns her head and looks at me with scarlet cheeks and dazed eyes. She regains focus and gives a wide smile.

NOTE: This story isn’t one of those “ sport is life” novels. This is the story of redemption for a man who lost everything due to his own negligence. He isn’t a swimmer, he is a regular guy with a life who is also happens to be a swimmer. 

Don’t get me wrong though, there will be tournament arcs and swimming tournaments but I will focus on a more slice of life type story for this novel.

                                                                  ASSIGNMENTS
                                                              Three years before

At 15 years old, every boy and girl in the village receive their assignment- an assignment to marry your chosen man or woman. For most young men, it is a day of excitement; where for almost all of the young women, it is the exact opposite.
My mother was now dressing me in my special-occasions dress. It was the same pale lavender and pink color that every other 15-year-old girl in the village would be wearing today. Altogether, the dress had four different layers. The first layer was tight white undergarments, the second was a soft silky lavender dress. The third layer was a heavy pink cotton skirt with bows; there was also a pink ruffled shirt with a tight collar and poofy sleeves. The fourth and final layer was a thin purple cardigan that was meant for the cold but wouldn't even fit over the ridiculously large sleeves we wore. My hair was done up in a simple bun.
Most of the older women I knew said that this dress would be the second most uncomfortable dress we would ever wear (the most uncomfortable being the Joining dress). It was impractical, insulting, and unfair. Luckily, it wouldn't have to last for much longer; once you were Joined for at least a year, you could choose your own clothes. While almost all women found the required clothing ridiculous and stupid, none of us dared to say anything to the authorities, so we complained about it to our friends and family.
My mother led me out the door and towards the street where a hovercraft was waiting. There were 10 houses on my block and 5 other 15-year-olds. The only two I really knew were Daniel Tates and Diana Preston. Things were awkward between me and Daniel because his sister had been assigned to my older brother, John. Daniel and John were both 19, which meant that next year, at this time of year, they would participate in the Joining. The Joining was when the pairs who had been assigned to each other would be wedded. They would, then, be together for life. Never to be separated. 
I knew Diana Preston from school; we were often paired as partners for projects.

The seats in the hovercraft were reasonably comfortable, but the dress made them significantly hard to sit in. I was glad when the ride finally ended. We all got out and joined up with the 50 or so other 15-year-olds in the community.
I was standing there in a daze when my best friend, Rosie Simmons, said, smiling, "You excited?" in a sarcastic and dull voice. We had all dreaded this day for the past 9 years.
"No," I said without even trying for a smile.
"Yeah, me neither…" Rosie replied, her smile instantly disappearing.
Finally, we were taken into the large hall where 3 rows of bleachers had been set up. The crowd parted as the boys went to the right, the girls to the left; we all sat. Us girls were a mass of purple and pink, and the boys were all in simple dark blue suits; they seemed comfortable enough. As I was saying… unfair.
Soon after, a man in a white suit walked up onto the stage. He had a gorgeous woman at his arm. The man's hair was as white as his suit and his eyes were gentle blue. The woman was wearing a fancy, pale-green dress that was similar to the one I was wearing. Her hair was light brown and also in a bun.
"Welcome to all the young men and women here today," the man began. "As you know, you are here today to learn and celebrate your assignments."
We clapped. The man continued to give a speech about the glory and honor of your assignments.
"The first assignment is of Michael Abby." Michael walked to the stage. He had brown hair and brown eyes. He had never been very smart or very interesting, but he was always caring and considerate to me. "Jessica Olson."
Jessica walked to the stage. I believe they had matched them well. She was also not particularly smart or interesting but was also kind. They both seemed to be pleased.
Most times it is not the assignments that disappoint us, but the idea of being secured to a certain boy for the rest of our lives; after the Joining, we wouldn't be doing much else than serving them.
"Next, the assignment of Theodore Attler." He had blond hair and startling blue eyes. He might've been a teensy bit handsome but he wasn't too smart or kind to the girls. Among the boys, however, he was quite popular. "Rosalind Simmons."
To my left, my best friend let out a small groan. On the stage, Theodore- better known as Teddy, was grinning. Rosie slowly and reluctantly made her way to the stage.
She stood next to Teddy, her posture growing worse by the second; her face becoming more and more disappointed. Rosie looked at me, and I gave her a look that said I share your pain. I'm so sorry. I really was; this was one of the worst matches they'd ever made.
When she came down from the stage and slouched into her seat, I whispered, "Maybe you can be reassigned?���
"Not likely," she grumbled back. She was probably right; there have only been about 7 re-assignments in the last 30 years.
"Next, the assignment of Finn Brekle." Finn was handsome and nice. Not too smart, but not stupid either. He was the most well-known and popular boy amongst not only the 15-year-olds but also the 14-year-olds and the 16-year-olds. Half the girls next to me nearly fainted as he walked to the stage. I just rolled my eyes. I didn't care who I was assigned to, I really didn't. I just wanted to get this stupid ceremony over with.
"Juno Miller."
I blinked. My name rang in my ears. I looked at Rosie, who nodded, then back at the man on the stage and Finn. Slowly, I stood and walked down the aisle to the stage. I felt everyone's eyes on me. I slowly climbed the stairs, holding my heavy skirts up to keep from tripping. At the top, I turned to stare at Finn, who smiled beautifully at me. He seemed pleased, which amazed me. I didn't think I was pretty, and most of the boys had never seemed to notice me. Why would Finn be assigned to me out of all people? My red hair was too short (long story: I got angry one day, grabbed a kitchen knife, and sliced my hair off; I got in very big trouble), and my eyes were too dark and far too big. I was certainly not pretty, yet Finn was very satisfied.
Then, he took my arm and led me down the stairs until I reached my seat.
I didn't think about much for the rest of the ceremony. When it ended, it was common for the newly assigned pair to meet up and get to know each other better. As soon as I stood to walk over to Finn, Rosie leaped up and turned me to face her.
"I don't want to talk to Theodore!" she whined.
I glanced over at Teddy, who was talking to Finn (they were good friends).
"C'mon, I'm going to talk to Finn. I promise you won't have to say anything to Teddy." When we reached the two boys, Rosie and I curtsied. Finn bowed; Teddy did not.
"Juno!" Finn said, taking my arm.
"Finn." I nodded.
"Will you come with me for a minute?"
I glanced over at Rosie. She gave me a look that clearly read, If you leave me alone with him, I swear I will kill you!
I shook my head and replied with a look that said, There's not much I can do right now… I'll be back as soon as I can.
She sighed and shrugged her shoulders. I followed Finn into the courtyard, but not before stealing one last glance at Rosie and Teddy. I caught a glimpse of Rosie's grimace before turning to face Teddy.
He was smiling a dazzling, white-toothed smile. His green eyes crinkled perfectly when he smiled. I guess he was handsome enough. Finn stopped rather abruptly and I nearly walked into him. He turned around and grinned at me; he was obviously waiting for me to speak.
"So…" I said.
"So."
"Are you pleased with your assignment?" I asked, not quite sure what answer I would get.
"Yes," he said, plainly. His expression sure said the same. "Are you?"
I hesitated, then said, "Well, I'm certainly surprised. Do you think the matches were made well this year?" I could tell he was slightly disappointed with my answer, but it was as close to the truth as I could get without hurting him.
"Some were, some weren't. As usual."
"True. I honestly don't think Teddy and Rosie are a good assignment. That's just a disaster waiting to happen."
Finn thought for a moment. "No, I agree, but I'm not sure who else they would be matched with."
"That is just one of the many faults with the assignment process," I said, not yet realizing the severeness of the sentence.
Finn's smile vanished; he laughed uncomfortably. "Juno, that's a pretty serious thing to say, especially for someone in your position."
I raised my eyebrows at Finn. "I mean, it is true, right? It's not like anyone's listening." I couldn't have been more wrong.
Finn glanced from side to side like he was looking for someone. "I don't know what you mean…" he said slowly.
I shook my head and went to go rescue Rosie.

Principal Kale elegantly motions towards the door and gently puts a hand behind my back as he leads me out.
He closes the door behind him, then begins walking past the reception, and without looking back he commands "will you please follow me Mr Jared?"
I almost wanted to say *do I have a choice?* but held it back because I don't think he's the kind of person to appreciate my humor, and making a bad impression now might not be the best idea. -
-Yes, being quiet has always been a good decision for me in the past, it's hard to talk yourself into trouble if you don't open your mouth.
Exiting the room we travel towards the left side of the divider, and past the receptionist, we soon turn the corner.
The inside is much as you'd expect for a school on earth, long straight hallways, with some cold metal lockers lining the sides, although much shorter than you'd expect for a supposed "Highschool"
In between the breaks of these lockers are solid pale yellow walls and spaced apart are doors made of hardwood, although none of the doors quite as nice as the one for the principal's office.
The echoing of our shoes on the hard and cold laminate gives off a lonely feeling, at least to me, and it fills me with some trepidation, as bad memories of my own time in school on earth starts to surface, but I quickly suppress them.
A short time later, we are further into the building, and I soon see more of the layout, there are only eight hallways, and the hallways are either vertical or horizontal, and they cross each other neatly like the lines on a checkerboard.
The principal takes me down the hall and after hesitating briefly, goes into one of the rooms, I follow just behind and almost bump into him when he stops after taking only two steps into the now opened room.
I spy from behind the principal a young female teacher standing at the back in front of a large chalkboard, and ten students sitting on simple standardized desks, all around nine or maybe t en years old.
It makes me wonder again why they call it a high school at all when they are only as old as elementary schoolers... perhaps there's a loss in translation somewhere... Oh well, I'll find out why eventually.
I can't make out all the decorations from the principal's back but the room seems rather bare for a classroom for nine-ten year olds.
The left side of the classroom has only a quarter wall, and above it is two large glass windows separated by a divider, the sun is shining through, but with the blinds it's not too bright. I see two medium-sized potted plants on either side of the windows and not much else.
The principal greets the class warmly, and the students greet back in unison.
Principal Kale looks around for a moment, and from a spot that I can't see from where I'm standing, he gestures towards someone, and I hear him ask that person to assist him in his usual authoritative tone.
After a moment, a well-dressed youth around five feet in height, and seeming to be around fifteen years old exits the room and begins following the principal down the hall, but his serious expression paired with his freckles seem a bit unusual and out of place for his young age.
If the name the principal called was true, then his name should be "Koi"
Tsk, the principal is a bit rude, he doesn't even bother to ask the kid to follow after he left the door, he just starts walking and expects it as a matter of course... he's a bit cool though... for an old dude.
I snap out of my thoughts as they begin walking further away, and I jog to catch up. We walk for about half a minute until we arrive at the far west wing with a denser row of doors with smaller rooms, most likely for one on one tutoring.
The principal opens one of the doors and looks inside briefly before walking in and switching the lights on.
The room is much like the classroom I saw earlier but smaller scale and without a single window.
I see two desks facing each other, one large and one small, most likely for a teacher to assist a single student closely, as well as a few all-purpose chairs stacked up on the back wall next to the chalkboard.
The principal chats with the youth for a few minutes to get him up to speed with my situation. After they are finished, the principal exits the room closing the door behind him. The youth then casually turns to me.
In a mature voice that I didn't quite expect, he calmly and unhurriedly speaks "Mr Jared, I am a tutor here, you may call me Mr Koi, I understand here that you have amnesia, and I am have been asked by Principal Kale to assess the knowledge you know, so that I may know how to better teach you, so I hope you will cooperate with me."
For around two hours, he systematically goes through different subjects, such as pokemon, math, history, science, and writing, including grammar.
My ability in math, writing, and basic science seemed up to par with a high school graduate, but he soon found my knowledge in history was nonexistent.
On the subject of Pokemon he seemed surprised to see that I could name them all, and yet I couldn't tell him their eating habits, or where they are found. I couldn't even accurately explain their behaviors or even how large or small they were.
Now onto the most shocking piece of news yet! when he had asked me how many days are in a year, I said 365, and he replied 1095.
If it's three times longer than an earth year doesn't this mean they live as long as bloody high elves!?
It is all starting to make a bit more sense now at least, now I know why the children in a high school are only 9 years old, they only spend a single year there!
I also learned that kids start school at seven, and graduate at ten. Perhaps this is why they have a system where trainers act in the same capacity as police officers... well that's a relief, I feel a little better that the ten-year-olds are not ACTUAL ten year olds.
WAIT! DOESN'T THIS MEAN MY REAL AGE IS NOT EVEN TEN ON THIS PLANET DESPITE MY OLDER APPEARANCE?
Oh god... please don't tell me I'm going to keep aging normally because I came from earth... because it will be rather depressing to see everyone around me stay young while I age three times quicker.
Perhaps this is why Ash Ketchum from the anime always seemed to stay the same age... I always thought it was for marketing purposes though...
After two hours Koi seemed satisfied and asked me to meet him for another session tomorrow.
I gotta sigh with relief to that because while being taught by a fifteen year old with an earth age of forty-five is awkward, it would be even more awkward to be in the same classroom as those... thirty year old ten year olds... hahahaha
I exit the room, but my tutor remains behind, I look for another exit and see some fire doors, but I decide not to try my luck, it would be terrible if the alarm went off on my first day.
I soon find my way back to reception, and I wave at the morbidly obese receptionist, while saying a small prayer for her chair on my way out. God, if I somehow reincarnate as a chair, don't let me be that one, because I have a feeling the lifespan of her seats is not long.
I leave the air-conditioned building back into the hot Alola sun once more, with my backpack heavier than before.
It was nice of him to let me borrow some books, if I'm ever going to become the best pokemon trainer and change this world, I can't do it from a place of ignorance. Yey for knowledge!
As I walk past the deadpanned security guard, I can't help but smile at the pidgey, and it gives me a friendly squawk as I walk past with a "PII*" "GGGI"
I consider going home, but quickly shake my head, as fun as studying right this instant would be, I really want to see that Mr Mime waiter I saw the first day I arrived here.
My memory is a bit hazy so I don't remember the route I took when I was brought to the police station, so naturally I opened up the GPS and scanned the names of the cafes in the hopes it might make me remember.
I'm glad I did because I found one with the name " Mr.Mime Cafe" I suppress a chuckle then think to myself, well this makes it easy!

Three years later
I am not eight years old. I have been doing martial arts class for a few years now and it has been pretty enjoyable and I am starting gymnastics soon because my mom got a promotion a few months ago so she gets more money now but she still works a lot. I get just out of his reach and do some hand sighns.

I the walk down the wall and look around. Some of the kids were crying and I notice Ichika on the ground crying with a very bloody arm and I watch as the teacher comes and picks her up and yells at me and the boy to go to the nurses room with her.

We then get to our apartment and my mom said she will have to go back to work in a little while and she tells me to take a bath because there is some dried blood on my arm.
The cuts still sting quit a bit and I think that I should learn medical jutsu so that I could heal stuff like this in minutes and I decide that I should eventually ask the god for a book that teaches me some medical jutsu if I get the chance to talk to him again because he hasn't answered any of my calls since I turned 7. 
I eventually get out of the bath and do some homework and spend therest of the day resting.

Only teenagers would venture off-road and take on 'real' adventures.
But the children who grew up at Fort Troas or those of the Sea People like Alani who migrated here long ago were not like that. These were more adventurous sorts who ran around the forests armed and armored on a daily basis. They hunted Wilds and natural treasures, mapped out the unknown, guarded their friends and Comrades with their lives, and generally earned enough to live on their own without parental support.

"Understood!" Even if the Wilds didn't kill them, chances were exceedingly high that desperate humans would.
They would save as many as they could, but the islands could only hold so many, and the ships and Reef were likewise limited. Going back and forth, once the islands were filled up, they would have no choice but to land at Fal'Herim, and that would mean even longer trips and more time taken. How much time did they have? How long before all semblance of order fell apart and blood soaked the Midlands? It was going to come down to a race, and every life saved in their dwindling time was a win in her book.

Meanwhile, Tim was in the desert fighting with a Great Dragon.
Yes, of course it was Khar'al-dras, the very Dragon who provided him with power. Right now they were in what could be described as a sibling quarrel, two brothers arguing and physically fighting over the fate of a certain desert city.
Simply put, Khar'al-dras wanted to destroy it. The city was no longer what it once was and had little or no appeal to him any longer.
Tim, on the other hand, had a lot at stake in that city and very much wanted to leave it unharmed.
The argument got heated and eventually they went head to head. Huge shockwaves churned entire sandstorms in the desert. The ground shook and buildings collapsed. Even if he didn't do it directly, Khar'al-dras managed to destroy more than half the city just by fighting Tim.
But Tim wasn't about to give up on all his assets in the city. So they fought, and all the people of Fal'Herim could do was to duck for cover and run for shelter.

Darian, on the other hand, was preparing to face the Wind Emperor. He cleared out most of the tunnels and went to find George in the underground command post. "Any updates on the Beast Tide?"
"Their main forces are two hours away, but word has it the Wind Emperor is in the vanguard." George told him, marking out spots on his map. "They won't have any early waves or scouting parties arriving before that. The Wind Emperor is leading the charge from the front. He will be the very first Wild attacking Kara-Goth. You have time to rest up."
"Two hours." Darian nodded. "I'm going to get something to eat."

In those two hours, Sior'khan-dras amended the Beacon's Trade signal to warn incoming ships about abnormal weather conditions, in case someone tried to land and ran straight into Nil'rak's Shroud or Zor'khan's lightning, or any number of winds and storms roused by rampaging dragons.
Remian and Captain Lance worked to get the Acrobat up and running. It didn't have a whole lot of mana available to power it, but they gave it what they could.
Ermine churned out enough Tier 4 semi-automatic guns for one hundred town guards. The weapon of choice was the Impact Pistol, an ancient Tau design that focused on stopping power. While it wasn't very accurate at long range, the smokeless, high-pressure firearms fired off rounds at such high velocities they would literally blow apart most unarmored humans within twenty meters.
As for herself, she built a gun turret on the elevator to the roof of her apartment and mounted a heavy multi-barrel autocannon on it. On top of that, she piled on metal plating turning the elevator into a pop-up bunker.
Aside from Alani, the rest of Class-2 weren't doing quite so well. They had tried to fly to Kara-Goth on their airship, but the storms raged on, and the airship went tumbling down and they were forced to limp back to Craggy Falls just as the rain started to fall.
Lydia started smoking.
Wulfgar started drinking his third tankard of ale that day.
Asda's dead body was discovered by already-panicked citizens among the ruins in Fal'Herim. Apparently she did not survive the door.

"Don't talk. Save your strength." Charlie choked out.

She trailed off. Charlie did not say anything either. Blood slowly trickled out of her mouth.
"How did... it come to this...? How did I... end up... here?"
Slowly, she closed her eyes. Then, she sighed. "Mindy... I'm sorry."
There was only silence.
"Remian... I'm sorry."
Once more she coughed, and she coughed up blood. At last, she turned to Charlie.
"Charlie... I'm sorry."
Charlie shook his head, no longer able to say anything. It wouldn't have mattered anyway.
The sound of hoarse breathing stopped. Mandy's body no longer moved, no longer breathed, her heart no longer beat.
Charlie sighed.
"Goodbye."

The day after the Fukuyama siblings got the news about Shinagawa Miyauchi, many black-clothed people entered the Shinagawa Household.

The sad and depressed people sat on the floor, grieving for the loss of a little life. However, the parents had it worst. The mother, Shinagawa Arata was dead in the eye.

Beside her was her husband, trying to support her lifeless wife. She walked to her son's portrait to light an incense. The way Mitsuo made her walk was as if a dead woman was walking.

She was unmotivated to even speak to her relatives.

The Fukuyama siblings were all attending the funeral early than any other relatives that arrived later. It was because they were close neighbours with the Shinagawa's.

Those three were willing to aid the misfortuned parents in their difficult times.

So, they were in charge of receiving the people that came to mourn for their son, Miyauchi. 

In fact, the first people to come and pay their condolences to the Shinagawa parents were Harue, Akane and Kana. They could not believe their eyes when they arrived.

What the news said on the T.V was true.

In their house, there was a portrait of Miyauchi's happy face with flower arrangements that surrounded it. 

The smell of incense wafted in the air, which spells the message of sadness to the ones in front of the deceased.

This was shocking for Harue, since the last time he saw Miyauchi, he had the same energetic expression plastered. So how could this happen?

Akane was inside, supporting with whatever work that she can do.

Harue and Kana were just outside of the Shinagawa Household, receiving the relatives and friends of the late Miyauchi.

Kana silently bowed alongside Harue who welcomed the guests into the house.

Among these people, the two noticed a girl with the same age as Miyauchi. It was Miko Aika that came with her parents. Well, Harue knew that she had a crush on Miyauchi except that Miyauchi himself did not know about it.

.....But right now, what was the point of knowing this? The person concerned is longer in this world.

Aika approached Harue and Kana with puffy eyes as she stared at Harue especially. As usual, those two bowed at them respectfully while Aika and her parents did the same.

Harue called out to Aika before she entered the house.

"Aika-chan. Be strong."

He lightly smiled as he encouraged her to move on.

"...Un.." She nodded and walked inside with her parents.

Kana watched as many familiar people from the neighbourhood kept coming. Then she detected a woman that was being pushed on a wheelchair by a man. And next to the man was a girl younger, around middle school age.

The man pushing the wheelchair was none other than Watanabe Kouki. Kana deemed him to be the second most annoying person to her.

By the way, the first place was occupied for his brother, Harue.

Anyway, on the wheelchair was Kouki's mother, Watanabe Yukino. She was paralyzed down her waist due to an accident so she was supported by a wheelchair.

She had long black hair with brown eyes. Her skin was white as if she was anaemic. But overall, she remained as beautiful as when she was young even after being a mother.

The girl beside Kouki was his sister, Tsuru. She was 15 years old, a third-year in middle school. She had the same brown eyes as her brother and mother.

Her black hair ponytail swayed as she walked towards Harue and Kana with her family.

Kana and Harue bowed then he talked with them. "Yukino-san, Tsuru-chan. It's been a while." 

Yukino smiled thinly as she greeted Harue."How have you been Harue-kun. Kana-chan."

"I am well," Harue replied.

"Same." Kana followed after Harue.

Kouki intervened as he wanted to pay for his condolences to Miyauchi.

"We will talk later Harue. Mom, Tsuru, Let's go in."

They excused themselves as they went into the house. 

After about half an hour, all of the persons related to Miyauchi were present in the room where the portrait was.

The sorrowful surrounding filled the room completely and the mournful ceremony began. Mitsuo, the father, was just sitting in front with an indifferent expression.

Akane sat at the back since she was not relatives to the Shinagawa Family. Harue and Kana joined next to Akane.

The priest went on to chant for the funeral. The proper etiquette was being followed and it took around 2 hours for it to come to an end.

During this time, Miyauchi's mother, Arata did not open her mouth once. She was dead on the inside. Considering who she lost, it was understandable.

A lot of sympathies was aimed towards her but it is not going to bring her only son back.

After some time, there was a meal that was going to be served. Well, Akane and Harue tried to help with the service to the relatives.

Kana on the other hand was with Kouki's family, talking amongst each other. It has been a while for Kana to see Tsuru and her mother so she thought that this is a little opportunity.

Nonetheless, after most of the guests have been served, Mitsuo beckoned the Fukuyama siblings to sit. They complied after a bit of reluctance.

Kouki too came with Tsuru and sat alongside Kana. Kouki's mother already ate as she was obliged by Kouki's persistence. Yukino was now trying to break Arata's silence.

As a mother, Yukino would understand how it feels to lose someone so precious.

"Kana-chan, did you hear the news in the morning? About Miyauchi?"

"...We heard about it yesterday."

"Today, it was updated. The authorities believe that Miyauchi is a victim of Gello. No, they are certain that he is."

Akane who listened to those two inquired more.

"Gello? Who is that?"

"Ah...You don't know, Akane-san?"

Akane gestured indicating that she has no clue on who that was. Harue too listened to Kouki explaining this individual.

Gello, a serial killer, who in his name itself holds a significant meaning. The demoness that targets only children and subjects them into gruesome torture.

The number of victims consists possibly just over a 100, all in the Osaka region and they were all boys.

The victims' age had a similarity in this case. For one year, Gello killed 12-years-olds, for the second year, Gello killed 13-years-olds, for the third year, Gello killed 14-year-olds.

The authorities confirmed that this ongoing tragedy went on for 9 years till the present. That means that Gello started killing 5 years olds first. Then the victim's age for killing progressively went up.

It was like as if Gello was targeting someone.

His unique torture methods differ from his victims. But the time that he murders is the same.

Gello always kills on the 15th of each month. No one knows why he chooses this specific day to kill. It can be considered as a way of personal satisfaction or some sort of revenge.

Either way, that does not change the fact that Gello only kills on this day.

During this 'special' day, patrol becomes reasonably higher but clearly this tactic has not been working so well.

"So what I did first was look up to every single boy that was 14 years old in the Osaka region. Then I monitored each one until something happens to one of them."

Yemon listened to Hoga as he was explaining his method to track down Gello.

"Of course, I had to start monitoring all of them like a week ago before the day of the killing because Gello could abduct his target and let him stay until that special day for him comes. But he kidnapped that kid and tortured him on the same day."

Hoga scoffed, "What an impatient guy."

Yemon looked at the screen of his computer. He was behind Hoga who was in front of his PC. Additionally, there were also two laptops on either side of the computer screen. 

It was easier to view multiple possible targets at the same time.

"So you are doing it the same way for whoever you are trying to find?"

"That's correct."

"Hmm. You are actually working hard, aren't you?"

Yemon teased him as he nudged his shoulder with his elbow.

"Working hard? That's a wrong way to put it."

"What are you trying to say?"

Hoga was still concentrating on surveilling the situation on his screen.

"If I view any problem in a game's perspective, then it is not called working if I am trying to solve it."

That kind of mindset was understandable to Yemon.

"Solving it for fun, that's called a game. Solving it for work is just plain boring and exhausting."

Funny enough it made sense in Yemon's mind at least.

He wanted to try thinking about this ideal way of living but this was not easy for him to do so. It is not because that he won't but it is because he can't

Some things cannot be looked upon with the vision that Hoga described.

Yemon digressed in his thoughts and asked Hoga on who he was trying to catch.

"Who is the target this time?"

He glanced behind for a second and replied monotonously.

"Nickname is 'Shi'."

Well, this one is just like Gello. No one knows its gender, age and face. So how Hoga is going to catch?

"Shi's victims are all based in Kanazawa, so I'm just monitoring over there. One more theory the coroner for this case made on the victims, was that the time of death was around midnight."

'So it is just not the time for anything right now.'

Since it was 8 a.m, nothing was going to happen. Yemon got in his bed and rested for a bit.

"You see Shi, you tell me. And this time, be sure because I don't want any blunder like that fucking Lumen's doppelganger bullshit."

A vein popped when Hoga exclaimed.

"That was not my blunder! Just like in a game, it was some glitch or bug! That doesn't count!"

"Oh, would you shut up about your game? I'm going to sleep, don't disturb me without good news to tell me."

"That's my bed you know."

"So?"

Hoga sighed and went back to monitoring. Yemon closed his eyes and got some rest.

It was 9 p.m and Yemon fully slept like a log. Due to his accumulated fatigue when he fought Mara, he was able to sleep longer than usual.

His injuries though were not improving. The pain was still lingering in his palm, and especially his back.

He looked at Hoga who was still sitting on his comfortable chair.

"Still nothing?"

"...No."

They kept silent as Hoga continued to monitor every individual through the hacked surveillance camera. Yemon on the other hand fiddled with his phone and scanned the information about all the criminals he is trying to recruit.

'Just 4...'

It was 11 p.m and Hoga's lips curved into a sneer.

"Oi dipshit. Come and see this. I found something really interesting."

Yemon approached and did as Hoga told him.

"Concentrate on this guy."

Out of the many people he was observing, he made the screen of one specific man occupy the whole monitor. Alongside the man was a woman who was walking beside him.

".....I don't see anything strange?"

Yemon was still confused because he did not see any suspicious activity.
It was two people walking, most likely a couple.

"Do you remember this woman?"

He again checked the identity of the two, but nothing came to his mind.

Hoga sighed but a moment later, he smirkingly declared.

"This woman is dead."

Yemon was taken aback.

A dead woman walking? That just sounds like a blatant lie but considering in what world they are living, this lie could easily be turned into truth.

Yemon calmed down and observed the man again.

"What do you mean by dead?"

"According to the records, this woman should be dead."

Yemon pondered and reached to a bitter conclusion.

".......Another Magic-User?"

Hoga's eyebrows raised as he heard a discrepancy.

"'Another'? What do you mean by 'another'?"

"Ah, I didn't tell you, did I? Basically, Mara is Magic-User."

"What? Why didn't you tell me?"

"I forgot maybe."

Hoga furiously glared at Yemon. Nevertheless, he enquired more.

"What kind of power did she have?"

"Scythe like blades grew out of her forearms. That's what made my back bleed."

"It's really sharp."

"Anyway, let's focus on this guy first."

They veered their attention to the peculiar man and woman.

"To add on to that dead woman, she was one of the latest victims of the murderer 'Shi'. Don't you think that this is a little too much to be just mere coincidences?"

Hoga proceeded to search for the man's information. It took only a minute to get what he wants.

"Here."

Yemon recited what was written on the screen.

"Naito Noboru. 28 years old. 177 cm. Married, lives in an apartment near Mukojima Park."

Hoga even disclosed the apartment number.

"You ready to meet him?"

"Don't be hasty. I have to confirm it in person."

"Yeah Yeah, your choice."


Eschaton

Year 2018

The day it all began. The start of the unbearable sufferings. The end of the old era. Earth would witness the worst event that spread agony and pain around the world.

The daily lives that people did not treasure as much. They would regret having so. That day, a catastrophe happened. Tsunamis, Earthquakes, Cyclones and other natural disasters were small incidents compared to that phenomenon.

Magic circles suddenly appeared in the blue sky. Mythical beasts emerged from those Magic circles and started to decimate the population of humans without hesitation. The cries for help were resounding in every part on Earth, but they were all in vain.

Until one man changed their fates.

That man killed the beasts that not even the American military forces were able to kill. With the power of Magic, he annihilated those hungry creatures that craved for the deaths of humans.

After a few years, he successfully eradicated the world of those beasts, saved the humans. He was praised as the Legendary Hero. The king of the world.

But this is not the story of that Hero. This a story that is based on what happened after.

Earth had restored its original form. Or even, Earth had become more developed, stronger and more.....cruel.....

Heroes were created because of some people awakening to their powers. The power of Magic. Science was further progressed due to the help of magic. New materials were developed, the world became more abundant of facilities. Aristocracy was established and new organizations were set up.

But there are lurking dangers in the darkness that would disrupt the peace of this world. The disturber of peace were waiting for their chance to set more calamities in this world, but why?

This story follows a boy who is tangled between the lurking darkness and the shining lights of the world. 

He is weak, soft-hearted, reliable and.........cute. He does not want to fight or get crushed under the strong that rules the world. 

Yet why does get involved in such battle? How is he related to these dangers? Is it just coincidences? Is he just unlucky?

I ignored them as I started to scoff down my food quickly, the quicker, the less time I get to taste it. And at this point, is a good thing.

They said it was to make us less picky when eating, because eventually when we graduate from secondary, when we're finally 18,
and full adults under their control. We'll need to be able to survive under any condition. Resulting in the poorly made food.

The stew tasted like how it smells, fish with oats and burnt, how it was burnt while being a stew? No idea. I tried gulping down the milk from its carton completely ignoring the straw, by opening it entirely by unfolding its edges and pulling the folds apart. It was chunky and spoilt, definitely not in the right condition to be giving to a growing child about to start puberty. I picked out the carrots one by one, they were small and poorly cut, but that wasn't the bad thing about them, no. They still had earth on them from when the were still growing to eventually be consumed by us. And they were even rotting, severely, a green moss looking thing firmly attached itself to the few carrot stick laying in the bag. Man, how I'm jealous of the people with cleansing and earth abilities. Next was the biscuit, no flavour but that was alright, at least it was better than the rest of the meal, the only thing about the round crumbly piece of bread was that it was overly dry, as if it was dunked in flour and the excess sitting on the top of it was definitely neither shook off nor wiped off. At least there was salt. But I don't think that's supposed to go in a biscuit most of the time...

I looked back up at my friends after I finished eati- ...reluctantly putting... things? Down my throat.

Carlos had his signature permanent frown plastered on his facial structure, but it was more defined as his face was turning into a mix between a pale white and green. It reminded me of those trees you have up, near the end of the year. It's been so long since I actually had the chance to celebrate it, I forgot what it was called. Chris? Christ? Mass? Something about Jesus I think?

Mara was tearing up as she warily nibbled on her biscuit, coughing a few times from the dryness. 

Dorian had already finished as I did, no surprise there. Sadly, I didn't get the chance to scald the image of him struggling to eat the cafeteria food into the depths of my brain, but I'm sure I'll get another chance, someday.

"Trying to imagine my disgusted face as I try to eat. I presume, Harpy." 

Damn, he caught me again.

I looked back at my tray bearing my eyes into the thick flat iron. Forcing my eyes to wonder around it seeing if I had missed anything.
I know that I haven't, but I'm not going to let him know that. 
I completely ignored his question as if it was never directed at me in the first place.

He chuckled once again.

I silently pouted as I looked at the exact opposite direction of where he is, and that was right next to me, on the right.

I bounced back in shock, standing there was the Headmistress.

Dorian caught me as I fell back on him, as he glared back in the direction of the Headmistress. As fast as a bolt of lightning I brushed Dorian off,cas I sat up facing my tray and looked back down at it. The rest of the group mimicked my movements, so did Dorian, but very much hesitatingly.

"Well hello there children~ 
Is the food nice or should I go and scold the servers and get you a new plate?~ 
We do want you nice and healthy after all~" 

All that pink resting on her slim figure was blinding me. She looked like Dolores Umbridge but skinnier, and blond. She made an image come to my mind immediately: 
A human radish. 

Now I hate radishes because of her. Great.

I can bet my life on it that Dorian was thinking the same, or at minimal, similar.

"No thank you, Miss Kelton." We all spoke this simultaneously. It's probable that an answer that slightly differs to this, would make her flip into a boundless rage. And when she rages, let's just say that it's extremely frightening. The likeliness of the majority of students experiencing the aftereffects of her rage is extremely high.

And right now, she's in a mood. When the Headmistress is in a mood it normally results in someone eventually doing/saying something to set off the fuse of her rage, 
then she, well, rages.

I'm smelling the tint of iron, no, it's blood. 
And so it seems that I've seen no one with bleeding injuries, so I have concluded, that 
Miss Umbridge 2.0 over here... 
Is on her period...

We're all screwed today. 

Yay.

Raspberry left to move onto the next part table to cruelly mess with their weak mental fortitudes. It seems that she had also went to torture the rest of the students from table 1 and 2 as well.

Then, blazed the siren. 
It's time to start our first lesson for today.

Every child seated in that room lifted themselves from their seats and in single file, strode out of the cafeteria, through the next double doors, serving as an exit and an entrance.

Table 1 (the 3-5 year olds) went on the first floor of the next building we entered.
Table 2 (the 6-8 year olds) went on the second floor.
And finally, table 3 (the 9-12 year olds) went on the third floor, that is where we go. 

We call this building 'The Main building', nothing special, but does imply what it is supposed to be.

Entering from the door from the cafeteria you could see that there was a hallway you stumbled upon, one straight infront, one on the left, and one on the right.

The one on the right at the end was the stairs, where table 2 and table 3 go up. On the left at the end, was the elevator, strictly for the 'teachers', 'cleaners' and, 'them'. No students are permitted to go on it, for a reason that not even I'm sure of. All I know is if they actually go on it they get taken for punishment, and are eventually expelled.

The 'tables' are actually referred as grades, grade 1, 2 and 3. Then it carries on in secondary, but we don't get to know the system there until we're actually in it.

In the main building the corridor straight ahead was for Grade 1. 
Each year group is provided with 2 rooms, each for a different type of 'lessons'. As you go up a grade you receive another room as the curriculum increases. But we'll explain the rest of that as we go along.

We headed towards the stairs, going up them as we followed behind grade 2. They went through the door leading to floor 2. 
As the 12th years leaded us up to the top floor, floor 3. 

We entered through the door reaching the identical hallway to the 1st and 2nd grades. 

And this is the place our daily sadistic torture begins.
