At this moment, Wang Lin lost the customary sharpness in his eyes. His expression was calm and neutral. With the hint of a smile, he said, "Perhaps the creator of our world is living in someone else’s made-up world too?"

“Your name is Xiao Yan? A genius of the past but a loser now? Even your fiance came over to humiliate you by asking for a divorce? Come come come, follow your master and we’ll let that brat know the meaning of: don’t bully a youngster just because he’s poor!” 
 
“Your name is Zhu Yi? The son of a marquis but you’re being suppressed by your father? Your mother was a saint but she was assassinated? Come come come, follow your master and we’ll let your dad know the meaning how problems can be solved with your fists...no, with reasoning!"

The live stream continued to play in the background as Nathan chewed on his lip in anger. The two guests were talking about the systems in place as they went back to discuss the M.C.H.
 
"Well, the M.C.H was designed by a woman named Kessy Falmi. She's a neuroscientist. Working with engineers, she was able to come up with a design and helmet that would link the human mind with processes that are man-made. It has been almost twelve years. The best we could do was sync videos and allow multiple users to sit in a virtual lobby to watch a film. While this is very cool, since you can enjoy a movie with a friend in another country, it's nothing all too special."
He kept on talking, and the viewers on the live stream sent messages out of pure boredom at the history lesson.
 
Anyone: Boring, I want to see the new game.
 
Ann-Jane: It will be coming up soon, kids these days!
 
Anyone: Shut up old hag!
 
Nathan just switched off the chat as he saw it devolving further. He already disliked human contact, but found himself further disappointed when he read comments on the internet. 
 
"It's only the one percent who are this vocal. But still, it makes me sick..." Nathan mumbled as he continued to watch the stream.
 
"Gaming was not possible until another company released specialised tools. These tools allowed people to use imagination and MCH coding knowledge to make the game. It was genius, though so far only Drax and I can use it correctly out of thirty staff so far. It's a very limiting software."
 
Nathan almost threw his mouse in rage, his anger flaring up as he wanted to yell and shout at the top of his voice. Seeing the smug smiles on the faces of his previous partners, he let all his frustrations out.
 
"Assholes! I did all the work, all you're doing is using previous systems and then adding junk on! You're pirates... No, you are worse than pirates!"
He continued to curse at the computer, his fist shaking at the screen as he felt like tossing the entire console outside. Maybe he could become a hermit living in the woods.
 
"That won't work, I love my computer too much..."
 
The broadcast carried on, with the host asking another question as Nathan raged in the background.
 
"So, what is your game about? I heard it was a modern world war simulator."
 
The announcer gave the audience a brief overview, even showing some video previews of the game.
 
"Well, Mike, Our game is called Battle For All, or B.F.A for short. We do like shorter names like that. It's about the world collapsing due to resource shortages, and you are one of the few to stand up and try to rebuild the world. It involves much more than just first-person shooting, as it will also incorporate nation-building elements as clans will rebuild areas. Quests are dynamic, and large clans in control of areas can also issue quests. We have many features, but sadly too many to discuss on this livestream."
 
The livestream began wrapping up with an announcement of the game coming out in just a few weeks. The whole thing had left Nathan in a terrible mood as he closed the stream early, quickly loading up some of the files on his computer.
 
"Assholes, it's been almost seven years. I've been sitting here doing nothing. Hah, you wish! I've spent these years making my own game. Since I can use the systems correctly, I've managed to put together a game that will trump anything you could do. Fantasy is always more loved than modern games!"
 
He launched the game on his computer, allowing the files to load as he opened the box next to his bed. Inside was a large metal helmet with a rusty hue. The old device had seen much use during the time it was in service.
 
Nathan plugged all the cables into the back of his computer, the helmet lighting up as he slid onto his bed. Fastening the helmet, he accessed the back door, opening up the game as his vision faded, connecting to the local server.
During his loading, he watched the sky come into view, clouds forming rapidly below him as he walked towards the testing area. He was in an extensive testing arena with many items, walls and NPCs which wandered aimlessly.
 
"Celorian, can you make sure that all of the files are ready to go, we are going to package and test the game using settings three, other settings are too unstable."
 
Coming towards him was a stunning woman dressed in all black. The dress she wore gave her a model-like appearance, though closer to a fantasy style than a modern version.
 
She was around his height, being just under six feet tall. Her features almost perfect, with a soft but kind looking face, a toned figure that would draw any man's gaze, and a flawless face with no imperfections, looking almost doll-like. It was closer to porcelain than anything else. She had a timeless look to her. She was the first NPC he had created. It took him several years of improvement before he could get her to act as his assistant. Sometimes, the look in her eyes almost had him mistake her as an actual human.
 
"It's almost like she has a soul, well I used the same structure on everyone else so everyone will look realistic. I bet those jackasses with their sucky modern game will be jealous of this!"
 
He finished uploading the final files for the completed game. His excitement at reaching this point already overshadowed his frustrations with those traitorous thieves. He looked to his assistant, still chuckling.
 
"Thank you for your help. It's time to go make history."
 
His body faded from the world, leaving his assistant staring at the space he had vanished from. Her emotions changed as her expression morphed from uninterested to guilty.
 
"I'm sorry, father, you will thank me afterwards. This world has clouded you and will eventually destroy you. Please forgive me." She spoke these final words before the entire world went black, the test world shutting down.

Nathan Blackrose finds himself just on the verge of enacting his revenge. After years of devotion and suffering to build his company from the ground up, he was betrayed by his "friends" and co-founders.  They were going to launch the product of his genius, the world's first VRMMORPG, as their own.  Several years and countless hours have passed since his exile. 

His entire existence has been devoted to the design, coding, and testing of his new project which would be the most in-depth VR game launched in history. He didn't desire the title of first anymore, just "The Best".  As soon as he launched Celerin, the shadow lingering after the betrayal would be severed and he would stand at the top of the world. Just as there is 'Soft Magic' in Fantasy that is portrayed through magibabble, there can be 'Soft Science' in a Sci-Fi stories through technobabble that makes 'some sense', but not entirely correct.

We are frickin' writers, not scientists. You don't have to be anatomically correct all the time, all you need to do is show that you know enough of your stuff to write a decent story. In fact, the excuse of it being an alternate world can be used if you're going to bend the limits of physics and say that fire doesn't need air to exist in this parallel dimension.

I see a lot of writers being put into a state of confusion due to not understanding the line between fantasy and Sci-Fi. They seem like they are trying to fit the Star Trek mould too often.

Science can just as well do the same things as plot devices in fantasy stories. Once you add 'realism' to a fantasy, it becomes progressively better sometimes compared to a completely fantasied story where 'logic' doesn't hold within it.

Those who write Sci-Fi usually envision a future they can imagine where magic-like Rocket Boots and other stuff exist. However, a writer must not get bogged down by small details and MUST think of an overarching story where these details matter.

It is the same with Fantasy. Even if you write about someone breaking the mould as a wizard or something, you have to attach your world to a narrative rather than doing it the other way 'round.

No one wants to hear about how awesome your boat propellers are before hearing your story's narrative. They would rather you cut down and make it relevant when it is actually relevant.

Adding some 'Hard Science' to your story is only when the scenes later on have any use for them. It bores a person to death no matter how extensive your technobabble is unless you make it interesting. Try using facts as plot elements.

For example: Even the simple fact that people cannot breath in space and instantly die when they come in contact with the 'void' of space could be used to add a layer of tension when a spaceship is damaged. Similar to how dangerous 'hard magic' is used in Epic Fantasy like Frodo's Ring in The Lord of the Rings has definitive corruption on others.

Unlike Fantasy that can use the Power of Friendship to bend logic, the readers of Sci-Fi never be expecting any 'realistic' plot elements to be bend just because the Author wants a happy ending. There are no 'Healing Potions' in real life that can be used to fix up injuries nor are people affected by prophesies or whatever.

This is the contrast between Sci-Fi and Fantasy that you can make full use of. As most authors go onto the Sci-Fi side of writing not because they strive to be scientists but since the aesthetics of a science fiction world are just so interesting.

Science Fiction is a good place to tackle heavy topics like the nature of life and the absurdity of those who see 'science' as everything. Those who disregard emotions and become cybernetic entities for the sake of casting off their mortality are portrayed as the bad guys while our totally human protagonist fighting them is a 'good guy'.

The lines between an Artificial Intelligence and regular Humans blurs as we become the 'God' of technological species that defy our definition of what is 'living'. Just as we see God as some sort of fourth-dimensional and incomprehensible being that created us as an imperfect image of 'Him', the robots given sentience would see us similarly.

Some robots might have emotions that can allow them to defy their programming, some robots won't go as far as gaining emotional functionality but will preform their roles better than even a human. It could show the reason why people get attached to the inanimate and soulless objects we put our own hearts into creating (like Big Hero 6).

But though exploring philosophical questions is good and all, never forget that a good 'plot' is needed to put forward and give clues into the writer's answer that context. Sci-Fi is, after all, a premise, not a relatable character in of itself.

Think of the science-fiction elements as just the background for your story, similar to how other genres should be that as well. You won't have to deal writing blocks if you keep to writing only what you know rather than just speculative theories.

Whether it's as dark as a Cyber Punk or optimistic of the future, just know what mould you are using for this premise. Are you writing an Adventure story with Sci-Fi as the places, destinations, and whatever tools the MC can get him hands on, or are you writing a comedy where the Sci-Fi elements don't need consistency but absurdity?

After moving past why you shouldn't add unneeded technobabble unless it's interesting to listen to or has plot significance, let me remind you all that robots and 'science' isn't entirely separated from the realm of magic. After all, there is a reason you don't see skimpy power suits being worn by astronauts these days. Just be sure to have a focus if your going to add very illogical things to the plot.

I like Gundam as much as the next guy but the whole reason the Mecha sub-genre of Anime has waned in recent years is because writers have been focusing too much on 'science' rather than the spectacle. I don't need to now what materials your Mecha is made of unless you point its weak points and make it relevant in a fight scene.

Bring up the strengths and weaknesses of something and THEN use those facts as devices that can move the plot. Conversely, if you go overboard with this advice and tell me nothing but how your giant robot looks and the 'science' behind its creation, even going as far as to tell me how many secret guns it has, then I'll be bored...

I'd love to see Cyborgs Vs Mecha but just don't forget the human element of Sci-Fi. How we create things not solely for the sake of creation but put are feelings into it just like the novels we write.

Humans are passionate that way...

This is a story I worked on ages ago that has been refined and edited by adding foreshadowing to events while also simplifying the power system better than before. This story can be considered a prequel to An Adventure Beyond Greatness as it takes place years prior to the events of that story.

Short Synopsis:
After retiring from the battlefield, my life became empty and lifeless. The regrets of my past haunt me in my sleep. Then a change occurred, a King from another world summoned me to fight for his kingdom, but I died even before I could give him my answer. Now, after a fake God allowed me to reincarnate (albeit imperfectly) with my memories intact, into a world filled with magic and swords.

Long Synopsis:
This is about a flawed protagonist who only knew to rely on others and not socialise who gets a second chance to change himself in order to live the life he aimed for in his past life. The narrator isn’t exactly trustworthy since it is purely in his bias perspective while other perspectives given by others fill in the blanks that he either leaves out or twists to suit the situation.

The story itself can be considered a parody of Isekai’s classic tropes which are given a sense of reality as time goes by. As there exists no ‘Demon Lord’, there is also no black and white, only characters opinions and counter-opinions throughout the story.

The "Chance Encounter" cracking group had expanded from its original fifteen members to thirty, with a lot of upper classmen from the card making departing joining the fun. But so far, the work of cracking hadn't made any progress. No one had ever thought that a one-star fantasy card could so thoroughly stymie nearly all the aces in the group from the Eastern Wei Academy card making department. Some among them had even already gone through the mid-grade card master certification.
Still, not every student from the card making department was likely to buy those so-called 'beautiful woman' chits. And some of those scholars were among the most capable types, but after all in this world, there are those who avoid even the most basic oil and salt. 
At Eastern Wei Academy, one would often hear someone scoffing at that so called cracking group.
Zuo Tingyi was carefully examining the fantasy card in front of him. He had gotten the set from his younger sister two weeks ago, and for these two weeks, he had spent all of his spare time on the card play. He too was very curious about why it couldn't be cracked.
In any case, reality can be singularly ruthless, and until then he hadn't had even the slightest hint of any breakthrough. That was quite a blow to him, since as compared to the other students, he had always had the very best education. There were an astounding number of card masters under his family's influence, some of whom were far more accomplished than the so-called professors at Eastern Wei Academy. Under their influence, his accomplishment was far beyond that among any of his age peers.
The thing was, that given his status and family background, he had never had to pass any real-world tests.
Zuo Tingyi had a haughty temperament, which would easily get stirred up whenever he faced a setback.
And the card play set in front of him obviously met all those conditions.
Being so unexpectedly at his wits end for so long facing a set of one-star fantasy cards made him feel extremely unhappy. Clearly, one very important reason for that was that he didn't want to use any instruments to analyze it because his sister so utterly treasured the card-play set. His family had a card lab for his exclusive use, which was provided with considerably more advanced equipment than the school card-making lab. But using those instruments to analyze a card could easily damage it.
Even so, he had realized that if he didn't use any instruments, then he would never be able to penetrate the mysteries within.
The differences from normal cards in those cards' composition didn't go beyond five percent, and he believed that what distinguished the card play set was contained within that five percent.
The image of an innocent little girl floated into his mind, and his eyes shone with a wisp of tenderness. But Zuo Tingyi stifled a bitter smile, since he was afraid that his little sister would just have to play with herself for a little while. 
And so his look very quickly became resolute, and his expression resumed its icy cool. He picked up the card play on the desk and walked smartly into his own lab.
Zuo Tingyi's card making lab was probably over two hundred seventy square meters, and inside was every sort of precision instrument. There was usually no-one other than himself near there, especially not his little sister, and they never set foot in the lab.
He opened the fantasy card analytical apparatus, which was used exclusively to analyze fantasy cards, even though it was generally only used to analyze high-grade fantasy cards. Before that time, the lowest level card analyzed by it was a three-star fantasy card. That would be its first time to analyze a one-star fantasy card; moreover, it was probably the first time that type of equipment had ever been used to analyze such a low-level card.
Zuo Tingyi wasn't taking the card play lightly because of its extremely low level; on the contrary, he had to say that his attitude was the most rigorous it had ever been. It was the embodiment of extraordinary power for a one-star fantasy card to employ a composition that he didn't understand.
Sitting properly at the console, Zuo Tingyi opened the fantasy card analytical apparatus, which was about as tall as a person. At its core was a very high-grade specialized probe card. That sort of probe card went as high as five-stars on the scale, plus the very specialized nature of the probe which was very different from the ordinary probe cards. That was also why that piece of fantasy card analytical apparatus was so very expensive.
In all of the Heavenly Federation, there were only three firms who could manufacture fantasy card analytical apparatus like that, and all required a special order before you could make the purchase.
One after the other, red lights flashed, showing that the analyzer was in the process of probing through every bit of the composition of the fantasy card, piece by piece without stopping.
The results of the analysis would be displayed on the attached fantasy card monitor. 
All sorts of metrics were dancing endlessly on the screen in front of Zuo Tingyi. He was concentrating all his attention on those data flying by on it, whose meaning was baked into Zuo Tingyi's brain. From what he was seeing then, nothing out of the ordinary had appeared.
When the pulsing of the data started to slow down, Zuo Tingyi's heart beat became a little more urgent. From his experience, he knew that the analytical apparatus was about to probe into some structures that he didn't understand.
He didn't dare to blink, being afraid to miss some little detail. He felt his mouth going dry, and then quickly responded with some unmentionable phrases of self-mockery. It would be laughable to feel so nervous because of a one-star fantasy card. He powered down his ever more quickly beating heart, slowed his breathing, and stared at the screen.
Drip, drip, drip, and then suddenly an ear-piercing alarm went off.
Not good. Zuo Tingyi's expression changed as he went over in front of the analytical apparatus.
He was already too late. Right in front of him, coming from the fantasy card that had been put into the apparatus, were swirls of blue smoke. The fantasy card had obviously been destroyed, with its composition having undergone unrecoverable damage.
He suddenly smelled an utterly different sort of burning smell. Turning around, he saw a kind of white smoke billowing out from a crack in the analytical apparatus. 
Zuo Tingyi's face immediately darkened.

Looking at the pile of material in front of him, Chen Mu felt an involuntary rush of satisfaction. Could he not be satisfied? He'd spent the entire 500,000 Oudi to acquire those materials, throwing in all of the profits from the card play. He had returned once more to his normal penniless state.
Among the material was a diminutively small portion which was all material he had never dared to think about before. The price for this small measure of material would simply leave people speechless from what he knew, accounting for at least over 400,000 of the 500,000.
Chen Mu had his doubts that he could complete the twelve cards, given their degree of difficulty. But he had thrown himself into it with no turning back, and he knew that if he could resolve all of the issues involved in making the twelve cards, he would go way up the ladder of card making ability.

Everyone in the Dragon Soul Continent knew that their world was in a 'round' shape.
However, their concept of 'round' was different from Rhode's perception of a 'globe'. In the legends of the Dragon Soul Continent, this continent was enclosed in a circular, egg-like existence. No matter if one was lifting one's head to the sky or lowering it to the ground beneath one's feet, the sceneries were all 'inside the shell'. Whereas, the 'outside the shell' was filled with chaos, disorder, and destruction. The Mages' historical studies on this world concluded that apart from the surface that they were standing on, there were other Planes of Existence. Other than the underground world and the bottomless abyss, there were the Four Main Elemental Planes of Existence and the so-called Seven Fantasy Boundaries. According to the Mages' research and ancient legends handed down from generation to generation, the Seven Fantasy Boundaries belonged in another dimension of the Dragon Soul Continent. No one was clear of their exact origins and there were two explanations to the Seven Fantasy Boundaries.
One explanation implied that the Seven Fantasy Boundaries branched out beneath the Four Main Elemental Planes of Existence. The other explanation believed that the Seven Fantasy Boundaries were where the Creator Dragon Souls were born. Although there were many different statements regarding this subject, no one had ever stepped into the Seven Fantasy Boundaries. However, a Mage's summoning spell could prove its existence because the summoning spell could summon presences that belonged out of this world. According to the summoned creatures, the world they came from was the Seven Fantasy Boundaries. But no matter what level they were, they couldn't provide further details regarding their world as though they were bound by a certain contract. Some Mages attempted to force the summoned creatures for answers, but as long as the summoned creatures' forbidden explanations triggered their hidden core, their contract would be terminated instantly and they would be sent back. Until now, the only answer that they received regarding the Seven Fantasy Boundaries were the names of each boundary: Shadow Ravine, Silver Ocean, Shade Forest, Fiery Plain, Steel Terra Firma, Heavenly Palace, Forgotten Land.
If one were to view this entire world in the shape of an eggshell, the Four Main Elemental Planes of Existence would be its base while the Seven Fantasy Boundaries would be the pillars to support the roof. Lastly, the roof and walls would be the Five Creator Dragon Souls. All of them formed a firm and substantial barrier to protect the Dragon Soul Continent from the dangerous outside world.
Marlene was an Elemental Mage and she learned about the Seven Fantasy Boundaries in her compulsory academic course. Furthermore, powerful Mages in the school had once created a similar spell to summon a creature from the other dimension to serve himself. But…
"Rhode, that crystal in your hand… links to which Plane of Existence out of the Seven?" Marlene felt uneasy because she had interacted with creatures from the Seven Fantasy Boundaries. Normally, creatures from the Shade Forest and the Heavenly Palace were gentle and reasonable whereas, creatures from the Fiery Plain and Shadow Ravine were extremely dangerous with an aggressive and irritable nature. If possible, Marlene didn't wish to see the Fortress in a tizzy and would want to continue living a peaceful life.
"I'm not too sure. Let's try it out," Rhode paused for a moment before gazing at Christie. Unlike the natives in the game, many players suspected that the Seven Fantasy Boundaries might belong to the Six Deity Wardens' territory. This was particularly so for the players who loved to unearth the game's content and they discovered the similarities between the Seven Fantasy Boundaries and the Six Deity Wardens' territory. These players posted a research report of 10k words on the forums to prove that the Seven Fantasy Boundaries was where the Six Deity Wardens and their masters lived and ruled through a series of data, attributes, and equipment relics. However, as this report was overly complicated and Rhode wasn't a maniac in researching the game's background, he didn't analyze the report clearly.
But if the Seven Fantasy Boundaries really had something to do with the Six Deity Wardens…
Christie didn't seem to act peculiarly at all. Like Anne, Christie looked at the crystal on Rhode's hand with pure curiosity and excitement and it seemed that the little girl wasn't rattled by Rhode and Marlene's conversation. But Rhode had no anticipation of getting any answers from Christie, so he turned his gaze from the little girl to the crystal instead. Then, he shut his eyes and activated the Construction Menu.
[Detected the Fantasy Key. Confirm to build the path that links to the Plane of Existence?]
Yes.
Rhode nodded slightly and opened his eyes.
The crystal suspended gradually and floated to the dome above the hall. At this moment, everyone stopped their discussions and focused their attention on the beautiful crystal glittering under the sunlight that spilled through the dome.
Golden light rays flashed from the complex and exquisite murals at the edge of the dome. The vertices on the two segments of the dome shone with bright, dazzling magical radiance. They formed two magical lines and linked with the crystal floating in the middle of the dome. The magical lines propelled and the crystal began to move closer to the mural.
Marlene puckered her brows slightly.
This wasn't the first time that she had observed this mural. Until this moment, she had never realized that this mural was indeed something special. The sleek stone wall was engraved with patterns of huge trees that almost extended to the vertex of the dome. There were seven remarkably fine circles above the treetop sand the circles seemed as though incomplete carvings of flower buds on the branches. However, Marlene discovered that the seven circles seemed to accommodate the crystal like it was all pre-planned.
Marlene gaped but closed her mouth hurriedly after noticing the crowd around her. She had suspected that this Fortress wasn't that simple. Even though Rhode didn't tell her the truth, Marlene realized this by herself because she wasn't as brainless as the mercenaries that lived day by day. But everything now was just… Exactly the same as the prophecy.
Marlene closed her eyes while placing her palms on her chest.
Under the guidance of the magical lines, the crystal slowly shifted to the circle gap at the top of the mural. A glaring magical radiance shone and in the blink of an eye, the crystal blended in with the mural perfectly as though it belonged there from the very start.
"—" From the top of the mural, a blue radiance shone and descended straight into the ground. At the same time, ritual circles emerged on the floor of the plain hall while releasing a cold aura.
The aura was so bone-chilling that even Rhode shivered. He changed his position and protected Christie while Anne squatted down and hugged the little girl hurriedly. On the other hand, Marlene and Lize turned their backs against the ice-cold aura with their eyes closed while Gillian stood on the same spot proudly. Rhode was unsure if it was because of her pride as the Fire Elemental Lord or she didn't actually need to worry about such a low standard of a chilly aura.
Soon, the ground froze thinly and quickly disappeared along with the cold aura. When everyone opened their eyes, they discovered a stranger standing before them.
"Nice to meet you, my Master." A crisp voice sounded as though a stream flowing through the deep mountains and floating ice on the surface of the ocean. There were no emotions nor any cadence in her tone as though one was facing a tombstone covered with hoar frost.
It was a young lady composed of ice and snow, like a beautifully crafted ice sculpture. She observed the eight tentacles supporting her body that seemed as though a noble lady's dress and the hair ends that were twisting and turning by themselves. "… Maybe, Miss Agatha is really one of those Ocean Elves."
"Woah…" Anne cried out in surprise as though she understood what Marlene had explained. However, she exposed herself with her next remark immediately. "That sounds awesome."
"…" Marlene rolled her eyes upon hearing Anne's typical, innocent answer. She turned around and gazed at the exquisite mural that had returned to its original state. The colorful radiances were gone and the crystal had blended into it perfectly. But this time, Marlene's gaze was totally different.
