And that was when John tried to fix something.

The clear chimes from the clocktower wailed throughout the city. He ran up the stairs, with a phone in his hand. Time was running, as the tick-tock of the clock rumbled like his racing heartbeat. He was neither late nor on a rush. Rather, the desire inside him was urging him to hasten his steps. The tiny vines of the bells were dancing with the breeze as he stampeded through the flights of wooden staircases. 

He hit the brake paddle when he passed one room. He glanced at the door and the screen of his phone. In anticipation, he briefly combed his tussled hair with his hands and tidied up his shirt. He pulled a handkerchief out of his pocket and held it against his watery back. He took a deep breath, mustering all the courage he could ever have. 

He turned the door knob. The room was empty. He was a few minutes earlier than the stated time. He gave a few taps on his phone and set off a gaze at the room he was going to initiate the next chapter of his life. He tried catching his breath while he leaned against one of the fences leading towards downstairs. Settled down, he tried piecing up the words in his mind, at the most appropriate, formal, perfect manner he could ever imagine.

The ache started crawling his back again. His arms were shaking. But those were none of his concern. He straightened his back and went on rehearsing the moment of his life. He worded his thoughts loudly. He worded his thoughts louder than ever. There are moments of life where one needs to speak louder than anytime else in one's life, to speak braver than anybody else on Earth. 

And this is one of them.

He imagined what possibly could happen after today - the good and bad endings of his life. He sketched the different futures where his shadow intertwined himself. He recalled the hassles he took to come here - getting a residence permit, gathering the basic budget, boarding a ship, going through the custom, purchasing an entry to the interior of the clocktower after 2 weeks of begging his friend who worked at the clocktower so that he could get through the security at the clocktower, all for this moment, the day where he would confess his feelings and it would go happily ever after. 

He was excited as he forgot how much time had slipped through his fingers. 15 minutes had passed before he realized it. The light of the afternoon showered through the rose window. He looked at the clock. He would want to make a call but the ache intensified drastically before anything else. He gasped. He tried keeping up his spirits, "I could do it. I could do it." He mumbled. 

The ache scorched his back as beads of sweat scalded the skin. To his horror, the painkillers were not as effective as intended. He prayed, he pleaded to last for another 5 minutes, just so the person would arrive and he could finish his words. 20 minutes had passed, and he was still alone. "No…" He denied as he looked at the screen of his phone. The phone slipped through his hands, he could no longer take the pain. He fell onto the ground. He bowed and whimpered. A moment later, he stopped. His shirt reddened as oozes of his soul gushed out of him.

A student of the local university, John Smite was found dead in the clocktower building on Wednesday at about 3:30 PM in what the public believed to be a murder. 

He was discovered by the janitor lying on a pool of his own blood with his mobile phone locked by his side. A cut at his abdomen was discovered, as the police concluded the death to be due to an excessive loss of blood. Later in the afternoon, the team left the building and claimed to perform further investigation on the case. 

The development of the case was currently unsatisfactory however, as the police stated them being restricted by the latest Personal Data Protection Act imposed by the government. They were disallowed to access any information contained on the mobile phone of the victim. Eventually, they decided to identify the possible contac-

"Done reading yet?" The newspaper was slammed onto the table.
"Hey, I was getting to the good part, it's on the front page for a reason, you know?" 
"Well yeah, I was trying to finish this crossword puzzle before the lecture started. And there're you reading each word on the paper aloud like an idiot." 
The pencil twisted between his fingers as he pondered.
"I was trying to be a newscaster, since we are taking a Journalism subject this semester?" 
"If you like Journalism that much, you should have taken that for Master's, not this." 
"Well, I just needed some practices to help my career."
"Yeah, reading aloud on an 8 a.m. class before the sleepy, grumpy classmates would totally help your career."
"You do your crossword puzzle. I read my front page. Deal?" 
The newspaper was lifted.
"I'm sorry but your request is currently unavailable. Please do not bother to try again later." 
The newspaper was pressed onto the table again.
"Please… It's been a while since I saw a physical newspaper. It feels so antique when people read tablets nowadays."
"Well yeah, no one appreciates paper publications anymore. They killed an art for being eco-friendly." 
The newspaper fluttered in annoyance.
"But why you never get a tablet instead?"
"Hmph." 
"If the tablet offers crossword puzzle at the bottom of each news, I might consider getting it."
"Yeah, Jake. If they offer matchmaking services for homosexuals, I'm sure you would be so eager to seize one." 
"If they have it, to begin with." 
Jake was not amused. 
"Daniel, if you don't mind, please go and write a reflective journal or something, still more constructive than telling me these nonsense." 
Daniel was at loss of words. He then turned away from his friend.
Probably his friend was not in the mood he thought.

Sigh…
"Now, let me see… 10 letters, a word that means Disembowel… that goes across here… with first and last letter both being E…" The phone vibrated in his pocket for several times. Those were the good signs. "And I know the word. Right away." He filled the boxes. He withdrew his phone from his pocket and had a happy peek on the number of notifications, the amount of attention he was getting. He unlocked his phone and began reading them one by one, like a staff clearing up his inbox of inquiries from customers before Easter's Day.

People had always been trying to fix things in their life. Relationship, for instance. I am the kind of person who is dedicated to fix my life by having a fulfilling relationship. I believe, that all problems would vaporize on their own the moment I held hand with the person I truly love. It's not fantasy, it's a fact. A mathematical fact, two is always better one, be it a subtraction or division, especially in division, the sharing the burden of life. While living a routine could be a major simultaneous equation to solve, with one person handling one string of equation and the other handling another, it becomes much easier to get to the end and much more satisfying, too. Imagine when your hand and his parted at one point then reunited at the other, making a beautiful conclusion leading to a new beginning of your relationship, how wonderful that would be. 

I smiled.

It's a collection of lovely fairytale, of hopes and dreams, butterflies and prince.

Ah, the wild world of network news. It takes a VERY special person to distribute it.
For about thirty minutes, an interview committee waits. The committee consists of one officer, one board member, and one stockholder from the news network. They're here to screen a prospective employee. As any fool can see, she's not off to a good start.
By now, the stockholder is taking a nap. The officer is on a phone, doing business, and trying to make use of what time he can't spend screening a new employee. The board member opens a crossword puzzle book, and fills in his latest prospect. Right now, he needs a seven-letter word that describes a poisonous fish that can regenerate, if its spines are severed...
The committee's getting impatient. The officer moves to call it off...
The door opens. The candidate comes in, and takes her seat...at the far end of the table, where she sits alone.
Meet Leta Leib, the latest prospect in news anchoring. She's blonde, and communicates well on live TV. A lot of the network's male viewers seem to approve of her...especially when she wears a low-cut. Even so, her sense of timing could use an upgrade, as this committee will soon learn to agree on.
The committee takes a while to refocus. When they can, they ask her about her background.
She's reported news before. She's seen a lot of revolting material concerning the human race. Even so, she's reported it, as her job has ordered her to. She doesn't wish humanity were more evolved...although she wouldn't protest, either, if it was.
The committee sure wouldn't protest if LETA was more evolved... They ask her if she's got a criminal background.
She hesitates. "No," she says, smiling. She scratches one side of her nose, with her finger. She looks around. "I'm a good girl."
Six eyes study her...
They ask her what her strengths are.
She tells them that she talks a lot. She's also got a boyfriend, who she's been with for a while. They often argue, but she's confident in the balance they have, as a couple. She has no bad things to say about humanity.
They seem amused...enough. They ask her to describe a high-quality job.
She thinks that a job is valuable if the company that owns it is the half that makes the paying community whole. They're like symbiotes; the company, and the public. If a company isn't a symbiote, then it's no more qualified to exist than evil. Although yes, from what she's heard, evil is more a symbiote to good than, (she clears her throat) most people realize...
Last, they ask her how likely she is to accept a new anchor job with another news agency, if theirs doesn't work out for her.
"I love my boyfriend," she tells them. "I wouldn't leave him if he sprouted gills and teeth, and became Jaws." She pauses. "The shark; not the James Bond villain. The James Bond villain didn't have any real teeth. Plus, he couldn't breathe underwater. Although...it IS a perpetual mystery, as to how he survived the ending of the Spy Who Loved Me..."
"Thank you, Ms. Leeb," the committee cuts her off.
"Leib," she corrects them, cutting THEM off.
They all stand to leave simultaneously. "We'll call you, as soon as we've made up our minds."
With that, they all leave her alone in the room, and turn the light off. Ms. Leib sits alone, dreading that she's lost her job to a white redhead with an East Asian name...

Vansh lowered his gun. He had a history with the man. Over the years, even when Vansh was presumed dead, Vansh had maintain minimal yet friendly contact with Pathak. Vansh had taken a bullet for him a long time ago. And in turn, Pathak had helped him when he needed it the most, convincing RAW and IB to stop looking for him. And yet there was another thing about Pathak, he was very, very loyal to his seniors.  Vansh may trust the man, but it did not make him trust Pathak's seniors. He had no doubt that Pathak would sacrifice him if requested so by them. He walked over to the switchboard and flicked on the lights. He then walked over and sat next to the man on a chair under which a knife was strapped. 
Amritansh Pathak had aged. His frame of an ex paratrooper had diminished over the years, and his eyes revealed that he had also aged emotionally, facing betrayals and backstabbing. Vansh knew that he hated all the politics and infighting, but he was determined to serve his country as long as their was breath in his body. 
He also understood what the IB wanted from him. Usually, RAW and tha IB steered clear of each other, not interfering in each other's jobs. But this time there would be problem. Since the German PM who was just back from India was killed on foreign grounds, RAW would take the lead, while the shot in the Victoria Memorial could also have been meant for the Indian PM, the IB would investigate the local aspect, leading a separate investigation. 
"What have you made out of the situation yet, Vansh," the man asked. 
"Not much as I wanted to," Vansh replied truthfully. 
Pathak nodded. "I feared that. I think RAW has already recruited you?"
Vansh nodded an affirmative. 
Pathak sighed and continued, "We are also hoping you cooperation, Vansh. In return, you can expect the same from us. I guess we have something more than you have figured out."
Vansh leaned forward in his chair. 
"The IB got an anonymous call a week before the PM was attacked. One of our low ranking officer got the call. The voice told that the country was in danger. And that if we did not listen to it, all would be lost," Pathak said. 
"Voice?" Vansh asked. "Male or female?"
"Can't say. It was mechanical," Pathak replied. 
"What was the IB's initial response?" 
"Ignorance, of course. We usually have calls like that, claiming that the fate of the country is at stake." 
"Then?"
"Then of course the PMs got shot at and we made contact. An email was sent to us. It said that take it to your best man. So I brought it here, to you, since none of my tach guys can figure it out," Pathak said. 
"What is it?" Vansh asked. 
"A crossword."
"Your guys couldn't solve a damn crossword?" 
"Take a look at it. You got a laptop?" 
"Yeah" Vansh lead the man to a table nearby where his laptop was on charging. The men stood by the table as Pathak took out a pen drive In a few seconds, a crossword lay on the Dell's screen. As Vansh started reading the clues, his heartbeat fastened. A German billionare. A US senator. A Pakistani youth activist. A South African MP. Vansh stared at Pathak, his face white with shock. 
It was a small part of the list of people Vansh had killed as an X. In the crossword, he had to fill nineteen such names. Nineteen people he could not ever forget. Because they had all been innocent men and women. He had known that even as he had pulled the trigger on each one of them. It was a mission, he told himself. At least that is what I told myself, because I was too afraid to admit the truth. 
Seeing the puzzle, he was so overwhelmed by guilt, regret and self-hate that his knees buckled. Pathak caught him before he could hit the floor. He lead Vansh slowly to a chair and brought a glass of water for him. Vansh slowly sipped from the glass. The crossword was rubbing salt on his wounds of regret and anguish. 
"You all right?" Pathak asked, his voice showing signs of concern. 
"Owen Scheilder," Vansh said quietly. 
"What?" Pathak asked, confused. 
"The German billionare, Owen Scheilder," Vansh said. 
Pathak quickly hit the keys on the keyboard and the name became green, indicating a correct answer. 
"How-" Pathak began, but he was interrupted by Vansh. "Miriam Walker, the US senator." The word glowed green again. 
"Abdullah-ul-Haq. The Pakistani activist."
Green.
"Todd Wellman, the South African MP."
Green again. 
With every name, the crossword became greener. When nineteen names had been correctly answered, the screen turned black and a question appeared in red: What do all of them have in common?
Pathak looked at Vansb for an answer. 
"Killed by Vansh Rathore," Vansh said, his voice barely a whisper.

Lying was his sin. Lying will be his redemption. 
He was born to kill. 
He finds himself at the place where he had remade himself an honest man. But honesty goes out of the window when his past catches up with him. Grazed by a custom sniper bullet, he finds himself once again entangled in the trenches of espionage he had so desperately tried to escape from. Accompanied by a brave soldier but surrounded by people who had previously tried to kill him, Vansh Rathore has no other option but to keep his eyes and ears open as he helps them for the only love of his life: his country.
