Du Lang spent all of the day learning the fundamentals of building a <Freeform> curse model from Sibyl. For a whole twenty-four hours, he was coached by the cold and detached Sibyl in not the fundamentals of constructing curse models, but the fundamentals of the fundamentals.
He was apparently too stupid to "plug and play" with the divine work of his predecessor, who had spent a hundred years fine-tuning and optimizing the process…
"From today onwards, I, Du Lang, am a changed man!"
Yes, changed.
Du Lang could only make the proclamation with tears streaming down his cheeks and his heart bursting with agony. As he stood besides the bedroom door, the remnants of his lashed dignity crumbled into innumerable specks of dust.
There was a certain limit of verbal abuse and doubts towards a man's intelligence that could be tolerated.
"Sibyl, why is making a <Freeform> curse model so f*cking difficult?"

Sigh.
His predecessor had done so much to streamline the entire process to the extent that all that was necessary from Du Lang was to define three fundamental properties to create a <Basic Freeform> curse model. The simplicity and naming convention of the categories resembled the modernized catalogue of programming, and at first – Du Lang hadn't held much respect for them, or at all.
Formulation, Output, Solidification.
Unlike many mathematical functions or computer programs, constructing a curse model hardly required any inputs or initial conditions – conditions that Du Lang needed to configure by himself. The <Master of Curses> constructed by Er Gouming had settled the requisite processing of such conditions and delegated them to Sibyl, hence all Du Lang had to focus on was the process of the curse itself and its effects.
Well, those were also fundamentally simple. As long as they weren't human or utilized something as mind-boggling and unnecessarily complex as human language.
Activating a curse model as well as creating one required the mastery and knowledge of words. Sibyl had mentioned it specifically to Du Lang since the first time he was aware of its presence.
Words, words, words.
The formulation of a curse model referred to the background processes that formulated its intended purpose, and Du Lang's contribution was to hard code his intentions into simplistic definitions that Sibyl could utilize to perform the remaining calculations. There wasn't any complex calculations or formulations that he had to do – which was a major relief – but Du Lang's brain felt cramped at the still overwhelming task before him.
The 'cache data' was wiped when Sibyl transferred from his predecessor to his own body and soul, hence Du Lang had to provide the missing definitions prior to attaining the ability to tinker with any curse models. It was still a simple and straightforward task, as Sibyl required him to define… just about every word utilized in human language from the beginnings of civilization to the present.
There was an additional and critical requirement, and one that truly caused his soul to fall apart in frustration.
He had to break down the concepts he presented into the fundamental ideas and definitions, yet retain uniqueness. Technically, he could utilize predecessor Er Gouming's <Freeform> curse model creation process at this moment, but without any tools or special implementations – the finished products couldn't achieve anything.
And dictionaries were the bane of his existence. Perhaps… Du Lang could think of a great example.
Contempt. As many dictionaries so generously provided, it was the feeling that some person or object was beneath consideration, held no significant value, or deserving of scorn. But what did it mean to hold a feeling? What did it mean when some object or person was beneath consideration – how was that different from disregard?
Du Lang wanted to protest, but Sibyl was unwilling to tolerate even a single mishap or overlap in the provided definitions. The cold female secretary lashed and whipped his soul with the imbibed words of disappointment and shattered expectations should he fail or stumble over the definition of a word, and Du Lang had absolutely no opportunity to escape.
And not to mention that it's most similar counterpart was the word scorn, which its definition… was the feeling that some person or object was worthless or despicable, or the feeling of contempt. He could differentiate between the two words as the definition of 'scorn' included the word 'despicable', but now he had to start the same process centered around the word 'despicable'…
囧.
"S…Sibyl, I surrender. No more words – I want an alternative!"
Six hours into the desperate struggle with the few dictionaries in his home and the great and domineering reserve of information that was Baidu, Du Lang waved the white flag. He flopped facedown on the couch, and buried his head into the corner of the fabric that once sheltered six years of his sad hopes and dreams.

"That's right, you mentioned that your 'cache data' was hosted on my soul, hence it would be deleted when you migrated from host to host," Du Lang turned his head to the side.

The harsh words swept Du Lang from his seat on the couch and hurled him onto the floor, eliciting a pained groan from the victim with great satisfaction. As Du Lang rubbed at his painful noise, the cold secretarial voice continued to hammer at this mind.

Formulations of information… did that refer to mathematics?
Du Lang pondered for a few moments, and agilely leapt to his feet. With his body exuding a tremendous amount of confidence and grandeur, he rushed into the study to grab the numerous binders of memos and compiled notes from his university days. With his dismal undergraduate certificate proclaiming him to be capable of aerospace engineering, Du Lang gouged open a second front in his war against Sibyl's disdain.
Since words wouldn't get him anywhere, he would utilize math and physics.
If Sibyl rejected Euclidean geometry, he would present differential geometry. Riemannian geometry, Finsler geometry, contact geometry and symplectic geometry – the power of manifolds couldn't be underestimated!
If even that didn't work, he would bombard it with the Poincare conjecture and Ricci flow. For final measure, he would smash Sibyl apart with differential flow tensors and quantum gravitation…
Oh, hold on a minute…

The floating black sphere had sifted through all of the documents that Du Lang had presented before he could even reach to open the drawer. Du Lang stood in place as with tears streaming down his cheeks and his countenance warped in laughter, not knowing how to respond.
Mathematics and physics were incompatible? The great mathematical system that represented all of humanity's achievements in the past, present, and future – was incompatible with Sibyl?
"How are mathematics and physics incompatible? What do you seek, then?"

"Even if they raise some bogus argument that '1+1' does not equal '2' or is equivalent to some conjugated number, they still rely on a mathematical system driven by logic!"

"Then what do they rely on? Imagination?" Du Lang furrowed his brows.
"How many human hosts are there, then?"

3% of active hosts of Sibyl were human… that seemed somewhat reasonable, if Sibyl was supposed to be the omnipotent observer. Perhaps there weren't that many planets or worlds where the human race were dominant…
On this planet? 3%??
"Oh. I can't give anything else. Do you have something then, Sibyl?"
The female voice uttered the first human-like sigh Du Lang had ever heard from the floating black sphere. He could only watch on as the black sphere deftly evaded his sight and blindsided his perception, and the cold, female voice had dropped several degrees in temperature.
[Reconfiguring. <Basic> knowledge framework shall be displayed. Continue?]
"Continue."
Du Lang confidently beckoned with an invigorated smile on his countenance, and planted himself securely on the couch. He closed his eyes as instructed, waited an agonizingly long three minutes and fifteen seconds, and opened his eyes at Sibyl's command.
"So… All I need to do is to close my eyes, you say?"
As if replicating the insane and incredibly tantalizing dream of AR overlays that were boasted in mainstream science fiction dramas, movies, and games, Du Lang saw horizontal lines of text scrawl from one end of his vision to another. The crisp characters dazzled his eyes as they rotated, sheared, and expanded in all regions of his vision, before proceeding to explode into a myriad of lights.
The specks of lights screaming past his gaze were of different colors, forming a bizarre sea of vibrance and hues that threatened to overwhelm his mind. Du Lang struggled to keep his eyes open as the infinitesimal spheres of light soared in and out of his vision with immense velocity, and each traversing line began to whisper in his ears, delivering unintelligible information at incredible speed and depth.
"Is this a supernova… wait! This is too much!" Du Lang wailed, and clutched at his head to curb the pain.
"My head, my head! Sibyl, stop – too much!"
[Progress halted. 0.00004% of initial data has been decompiled. Data simplification filter of 200,000X has been applied. Host, the requirement to advance to Intermediate <Freeform> Privilege has increased to 10 independent curse models.]
The secretarial voice was disgruntled and mired with immense disappointment, but quickly halted the bizarre streams of indomitable light. The searing pain in Du Lang's head gradually subsided after thirty minutes, and he gasped for the sweet breath of air.
"No human could comprehend such information – that's overkill!" Du Lang complained with thick rivers of sweat drenching his back and neck.
"How is that a <Basic> knowledge framework!? Not even the most advanced of supercomputers could achieve such processing speeds… wait."
His eyes had finally recovered from their free tour of witnessing the birth of a celestial nebula, and the interestingly familiar string of Western text and symbols caused his lips to twitch. Du Lang gave a hard stare for a few seconds, and began to tremble.
This… this syntax and style of writing… it was nothing but the ever-so-faithful nightmare that was the Java programming language, no?
He had paid the penalty to doubling his promotion requirements by springboarding from the human language, mathematics, and a celestial supernova to every engineering student's worst nightmare, Java…
Could he cry now?

Right after his retirement, former journalist Du Lang was granted an opportunity from a mysterious entity called "Sibyl", who claimed to be the world's oldest existence and sole observer. In a world ruled by technology, modernism, and reason, he could claw his path through power utilizing specially doctored spells, or "curse models". Dreams were no longer unattainable fantasies, and lay just beyond his fingertip's reach...

The world changed before his eyes, and as did his life. Eh?

Nalan Chunbo quickly realized that he was being silly. 'If Only Time Froze When We First Met' was actually him, so who did he have to be jealous of? 
Wen Shan saw Nalan Chunbo smiling out of the corner of her eye and wondered what he was smiling at. 
Determined to ignore him, she swallowed her words before she accidentally asked. 
[If Only Time Froze When We First Met: That's great, you can go to him for anything. 
Shanshan: Would that be appropriate? He is the head of the department after all.] 
Nalan Chunbo glanced at Wen Shan and got yelled at when she caught him looking at her. 
"What are you looking at?!" 
Nalan Chunbo realized that he actually liked Wen Shan's angry face. It didn't feel right when she was too obedient, and her current attitude made it feel like things were back to normal. 
"I remembered you saying that you were determined to marry a head of department," said Nalan Chunbo casually. 
"What does it have to do with you? So what if I am determined to marry a head of department?" Wen Shan let out a humph and continued typing on her phone. 
[Shanshan: But thanks anyway, I have already thanked him too.] 
Nalan Chunbo looked down at his phone. So Wen Shan wasn't being serious when she said that she wanted to marry a head of department. Too bad that he had taken her words seriously.

Wen Shan's text looked alright, but the man sitting next to her could feel her letting out a sigh. He also knew that she would not tell him what was wrong even if he asked. 
[If Only Time Freezes When We First Met: You don't seem too happy.] 
She might talk to his other identity then? 
[Shanshan: It's the crazy old professor that I was telling you about. The school reformation now requires all claims to be submitted with an itinerary. His receipts were all for his personal expenses and there was no way that he could provide his itinerary so he insisted that he had already given it to me and that I lost it maliciously, and threatened to fail my internship review if I didn't come up with his itinerary! How annoying! 
If Only Time Froze When We First Met: Why do you have to listen to him? 
Shanshan: Because our head of department told me to get evidence of him using students' dissertations as his own so that we could get rid of him before the new head of department takes over. I don't even have the time to do that anymore now that that crazy old man has been picking on me.] 
Nalan Chunbo frowned unhappily. 
He would take care of that old man and not let her be bullied, Nalan Chunbo thought to himself and walked away to make a call. 
Wen Shan remained seated while looking at the man who was standing nearby but far enough that she could not hear the conversation. 
"You might need a proper assistant for the micro mathematics theory shooting," said Nalan Chunbo into the phone. 
He had written the script for Gu Juexi's new movie. It was a movie that combined both physics and mathematics. Just like the definition of mathematics, the male lead was a mature and reliable mathematician who calmly speculated the evolution of species in the world. And like the definition of physics, the female lead was a bold and uninhibited girl and a genius in physics who used direct and enthusiastic means to show people the mysterious powers of space and their connections to the world. 
Both mathematics and physics had special meanings for Gu Juexi and Nalan Chunbo, so Gu Juexi decided to invest in the movie the moment he read the script, and actually chose the actors starring in the movie himself. As for the female lead, he had been considering Ding Ning who was as bold and uninhibited as the character was. 
It was obvious how much this movie meant to him. 


He was the powerful and influencing heir of B City, the merciless head of the commercial world, but the divorce papers made him lose his cool. 
“Sign the divorce papers, daddy,” said the 5-year-old boy. 
This man had the divorce papers thrown in his face by his wife six years ago, and was now being pushed by his own son to sign the papers. 
“That would make you a single-parent child,” said Gu Juexi coldly. 
“Mommy said unicorns don’t exist but men like you do,” the boy leered at his father and said. 
Gu Juexi’s face fell. ‘That damned woman.’
“You haven’t signed the papers,” the boy reminded as the man left. As usual, the door shut in his face. 
Good lord… Dad and mom are not getting a divorce and are giving him a baby brother? How worrying!

Hey, it's me again, Sonny, the wonk who would've been the first student to enter the Physics classroom if he hadn't just had a senseless discussion with his one and only friend. 

Anyway, I and Lester entered the classroom and saw Mr. Helix sitting behind his desk, rubbing his goatee (AKA the nickname source), and looking at his "precisely timed" watch. I was happy to see that our regular desk was still free. 

The desk was in the right corner in the back of the room. As in most Physics classrooms, the desks were a little higher than in other classes. The same with Biology and Chemistry. So were the chairs, they were more like bar stools. Four persons could sit at each desk, and that's the part I didn't like. 

I once sat to someone else than Lester, and, well, that did not end up very nicely. Especially not for me. The guy's name's Kit Heidelberg, and just to say it friendly: he's a discomfort in my Heidelberg (if you know what I mean). He was known for the fact that he never brought his own supplies. That means: when you sit close to him, certainly know you'll have to bring a new pen. 

Since that day, my organized butt sits in the right corner in the back of the classroom with Lester on my left. About Lester: usually, Jerry Click sits next to him (if he isn't "sick" once again), but that day, he suddenly had the flu (totally not at all because he had Gym that afternoon, or something) according to his twin sister Jenny, who sat on the fourth spot at our table. In other words: there was a student called Gap between her and Lester most of the time.

Anyway, I'm deviating. So, I and Lester sat down on our usual spots, so did Jenny. I put my backpack next to me on the floor and took out my book, notebook, and my pencil case. I spotted Lester doing the same in the corner of my eye. I let out a silent sigh when Abby and Chrissie entered the room. They sat down at their spots in the left corner in the back of the room. I leaned my face against my hand as I watched Lester sending Chrissie a friendly smile. She gently smiled back and sat down next to Abby. I chuckled and shook my head when Lester blushed. Bashful was just Bash in comparison to him at that moment. Do I look like that too when--

My eyes widened. Oh, yay. The fun had begun. I deeply sighed as soon as Taylor entered the room. "Why me, God, why the Toad me?" I complained to the ceiling. 

Lester frowned. "Whassup?" he asked me. I pointed at the doorway. Lester followed my finger with his eyes and saw Taylor laughing with the boys behind him. He nodded. "Yeh, man, tha's harsh." 

Taylor unexpectedly looked our way and smirked. Get the party hats. I groaned and Lester's eyes widened when he approached us. He stood in front of me and slowly leaned on our desk in an attempt to intimidate, and, well, it worked. He raised his eyebrows. "Well, Sonny-boy, have you received my little message?" he asked as if he were the most innocent person on earth (obviously not since the most innocent and simple person sat next to me). 

I sighed. "Yep, yeah, I did, " I answered him. I sounded careless, but inside... 

No, actually, I really didn't care. 

Taylor nodded approvingly. "Well, good boy." I watched as he chuckled at his own words for a second. Oh, so now I'm a dog? "So, what do you say? You do it?" I remained quiet and shook my head, trying to send the most nonchalant look I could make up. He shook his head. "Tsk, tsk, tsk." He took my notebook, ripped out a page without looking if it was used or not (ha, as if he'd care), and slowly crumpled it in his fist. I gulped. "Wrong answer, " he hissed threateningly in a whisper. 

Luckily for me, Mr. Helix (nah, screw it, I'll just call him "Goatee") clapped. "Okay, guys. Sit down, y'all." Taylor turned around with a maniacal smirk on his face, sat down on his usual seat, and ran a hand through his black, straight hair. I noticed he took the chunk with him. Probably for later. Asshole. "Take your book on page 39. Today, we'll talk about acceleration, " he spoke through the room over exasperated sighs and groans. He just ignored them. So did I. 

The rest of the lesson, I didn't really do anything special, so we'll skip that part. Well, yeah, the only things I did were writing down what he said we had to write down, I took notes, sometimes looked at Taylor and Abby, and felt my cheeks heat up and heard my brain curse when she coincidentally looked back. She just looked back forward with a look like: "Oh, hey, my nerdy classmate looks at me multiple times. I don't care. Bye."

I watched again at the end of the lesson and sighed. Would she ever have had a boyfriend? Yeh, probably. I mean, look at her. Perfect face, dashing smile, twinkling eyes, cool attitude, pretty--

"--project that you will work on in teams." My dreamy thoughts were cut through by Goatee. My eyes widened. Teams? Me? Ha. Ha. Ha. You wish. Okay, no, totally not. You do not want me on your team. I can't work with others. Why do you think I have zero dot zero friends and one guy who constantly hangs around me for some reason? I am the walking definition of antisociality! I am the only guy in the whole wide world who would dance folk on his own!

Oh, wait, that's true, we still have aunt Carrie. That woman can't even talk to a hamster. She dances folk, though.

Anyway, I hated teams. Always the same, sad song: who was the one to do all of the work? Sonny-boy! Plus, they never even try to talk to me. They just use me to get good grades. Stupid mushroom faces. 

Okay, back to Physics. Goatee turned to his leather sack and took out a chart. Probably the list with the groups. I heard Taylor shout from his seat in the front. "Oh, yeah, free grades!" He presumably referred to the teaming up thing. Half of the class laughed. I spotted Abby rolling her eyes. Chrissie laughed at her.

Goatee looked up. "Well, mister Greyhound, if you don't know when to keep your mouth shut, then keep it shut. Understood?" he snapped with raised eyebrows. 

Taylor sighed. "Yes, sir," he answered reluctantly. I chuckled inside. K-A-R-M-A. Wow. If I don't get a job later, I'll become a cheerleader. 

(Goatee didn't even mention Jerry yet. He probably expected him to be lacking.)

Goatee then coughed, preparing to read the names aloud. "Okay, so..." He looked up for once. "Oh, right, you guys have to record your project at home with your group, I want the videos on a USB in a month. Aaron, Vicky, Jenny, and Luke, you will be measuring the sugar content of a liquid with a laser pointer. Chrissie, Gladys, Ray, and Fleur, you have to examine simple, harmonic motion in a spring-mass system. Riley, Illinois, Jayden, and Bella, you guys get the fun one: rainbow fire. Next up: Lester, Abby, Taylor, and Sonny, you will make frequency-dependent sound absorption. And--" 

Poof. My world collided. 

Did he really just say that I, Sonny Flint, have to work with the biggest jerk in the whole freaking USA? 

ME?!

You know them, the typical high school stereotypes: the distant nerd, the tough bully, the vengeful bad girl, and the cheerful loner. Sonny, Taylor, Abby, and Lester are no different than that. But when the four of them get struck by a bolt of white plasma, they all receive very peculiar powers. Nourelle, the sorceress who called for them, names them "The Chosen Ones", because, with their help, she plans on taking down Sullivan Sinister, the man who wants to take over the planet and turn it into his personal playground, and his horsemanship. Nourelle is sure the teens will succeed, but what if they can't even work together...?

Lucid's mood was elevated as of late, mainly due to the fact that he had succeeded in recreating magic that utilized friction as its main force. Of course, he would still have to experiment and figure out more practical uses for this magic, but he wanted continue learning about new theories first, to be able to use different types of magic. He was particularly drawn to the field of physics, to the point that the only books he read now were physics texts. "Come Play, Physics!" was a book among Ki-woong's collection, and it was a must in Lucid's to-borrow list, as well as other physics related books. Even in the school library, he only checked out books with the word "Physics" in the title. There were parts he didn't quite understand, and parts he skipped over because he couldn't even make out some of the words, but he still enjoyed the whole process, as he felt that he was taking the necessary steps towards achieving more complete knowledge.

Maybe it was due to global warming, or maybe the weather was just fickle, but fall left just as soon as it came, giving way to a surprisingly early winter. Though they were still in the months of what would typically be considered late fall, people were already taking out their parkas to endure the cold winds during their commute. Concerned parents wrapped their children up to their necks, covering them in thick mufflers before sending them off to school. The children, on the other hand, would undress as soon as they reached the classroom, shedding off clothing item after clothing item like a snake would its scales. And good for them, too, since the heaters in all the classrooms were blasting at full force. Still, the heaters were rather unnecessary, as the children ran all throughout the classroom, zooming between desks, and quickly worked up a sweat.

The start of the second term seemed like only yesterday, yet the end of terms was only a month away. The first graders usually learned about various subjects, aside from Korean and math, and this time, they were to learn about winter.

"Children!" The teacher called, earning the students' attention. "Today, we'll be playing something called the Love Thermometer! You see, next month is December. What season is that? That's right, it's winter! Can anyone tell me what winter is?"

By now, Hee Yeon was used to drawing the children's attention with questions and the cadence of her voice. When she was sure all her students were listening, she smiled and continued to explain.

"... So as you can see from these pictures, helping out a friend or donating to someone in need, or even picking up trash from the ground are all considered a form of volunteering. There are more opportunities to volunteer in winter, since it's very, very cold. There are more fundraisers to help those without proper shelters or access to food. Do you know of any? Yes, these are all in place so that we can share a little of what we have to help out those who need it most. When we do this, we are making the world a brighter, happier place. Did everyone understand that?"
"Yes!" the children answered in unison.

"Good! I will now give you this paper thermometer, and you will be writing down all the types of volunteering or sharing that you can think of. If you start filling it from the bottom, the temperature will go up and up, right? The more the temperature of your thermometer goes up, the more our classroom, our homes, and our country will be filled with warmth and love. Alright?"

The purpose of this activity was to show children real life examples of sharing and volunteering in everyday life, so that they may also practice them in their lives. If the children were encouraged to present their ideas on the topic, it would serve to motivate them to volunteer, which would fulfill the objective of this ethics building class. On a larger scale, this class was meant to encourage the children to put what they learned in school into use in their daily lives.

While all the other children were busy with the task the teacher had assigned them, Lucid was contemplating something else altogether. Recently, as he had been reading, he had learned something absolutely mind blowing. Until now, Lucid had always understood fire as something similar to water or air, but it turned out to be entirely different. Fire was simply a physical phenomenon. An "exothermic combustion phenomenon that released heat and light," to be exact. Though it was a fantastic discovery, it also caused some confusion for Lucid. He had, after all, materialized fire through complete understanding. At the very least, he could make out its figura, and even now, he could materialize a small fire in his hands. The issue, however, was that his understanding had been flawed all along.

Pincheno had told him that sorcerers needed to understand the fundamental properties of the forma they wanted to recreate in order to properly materialize it into the real world. This meant that without knowing an object's fundamental properties, it would be impossible to recreate it with magic. And that was the issue. Lucid had, until now, completely misunderstood the properties of fire. How was he able to conjure it with magic?

Lucid stared at the small fire dancing on his palm. Without a doubt, a fire. Yet the more he looked at it, the stranger it began to look. That's when he remembered what he had read about it. The book had said that fire needed three components in order to burn: oxygen, a flammable material, and a temperature exceeding its combustion point. But the fire he had conjured was missing the flammable object. It wasn't burning through anything, rather just floating around letting out heat and light. Lucid closed his eyes and rummaged through his memories.

He remembered Pincheno talking about willpower. "You need more than just regular willpower. You need extraordinary determination, the determination to both combine all the laws of the world into one and rise above them if it means achieving your goal. Once you obtain the willpower needed to discard all else and focus only on consumme, that's when you'll be able to do it." That's how Pincheno had explained it. The determination to combine all the laws of the world and to also rise over them. Could that mean...? Lucid was struck with an idea.

Pincheno had told him that magic was the act of borrowing the essence of an object from Latio. An already existing essence was bound by no rules and had no additional properties. In other words, the essence was the true form of an object, with no other conditions attached. It was the sorcerer's job to apply specific conditions and rules upon that essence, and whatever the sorcerer added upon it, it didn't alter the essence itself. This meant that even if a sorcerer were to misunderstand water as a viscous fluid, as long as they properly understood the fundamental quality of water, they might be able to conjure actual water. No, they would be, for certain. They would merge their misunderstanding along with all the other rules and laws of the universe and rise above it with their willpower.

The first time Lucid had cast fire magic, he had been freezing next to a wolf carcass. The first property he had thought of had been light, and then heat. He had then struggled to figure out other properties related to fire, but that had been futile. Everything else could be dismissed as conditionals. His understanding of fire's properties had brought him close to its essence, and once he had an image of this essence, he had been able to recreate it through extraordinary willpower. That was how he managed to cast fire.

Another thought struck him moments later, as Lucid was listening to the teacher's explanation. It began with the realization that showing pictures of voluteer work to explain the concept of volunteering was different from first defining voluteering and then providing examples. Determining the exact definition of volunteering and then looking for appropriate examples was the correct approach, Lucid thought. Simply providing different examples and labeling them all as volunteering was nothing but circular logic.

The difference between deductive and inductive reasoning carried on into the field of magic theory. The various physical properties of heat, such as the transfer of energy and molecular action, could all be fundamental properties of an essence that exists within Latio, though Lucid couldn't be sure. After all, he had never come across true essence before. However, he knew that if he could find an accurate and all-encompassing definition for heat, it would help him understand the criteria of fundamental properties (universality and unique characteristics) and visualize the essence of different material qualities he came across. However, simply listing off qualities of an object wasn't enough to determine whether a property was fundamental or not. It would all depend on whether he could properly visualize it. As such, Lucid decided that he would also need to practice conjuring mental images. Once he had a solid enough image, then he would simply recreate it through immense willpower.

Ultimately, Lucid's habit of reading any and everything he could get his hands on had proved to be useful in correcting a mistake he had made. It could very well be that today's realizations might become tomorrow's dilemmas, but Lucid was still very young. How much more would he have to study in order to figure this out? Only time would tell.

"Sweetie, there is something I'd like to talk to you, so will you please stay?" Hee Yeon told Lucid as he prepared to pack his things.
"Yes, Miss?"
"The thing is, I sent word to a TV station, and they told me they'd like to interview you."
"Me?" Lucid asked incredulously. Somehow, this felt a bit familiar.
"Well, you see... I haven't been able to help you as much as you need, which is embarrassing for me to admit, but... Anyway, so I thought if more people knew about you and your circumstances, then someone would step up to help you out. If it does end up airing on TV, you might even get someone to sponsor you! Or at least, people could get a fundraiser going. If that were to happen, you could study as much as you wanted and take courses suited for your level of intellect. How does that sound?"

It was a difficult question to answer, especially since Lucid had no idea what they would and wouldn't show, what kinds of questions he'd be asked, or how an interview was even directed. All Lucid understood was that Ms. Kim was placing great emphasis on the fact that it would be helpful for him. Frankly speaking, that was the part he cared about the most. Being able to study as much as he wanted would be a dream come true.

"I've already spoken with the institute," continued Hee Yeon. "And they wanted me to break the news to you. But you don't have to choose right away. In a couple of days, one of the screenwriters from the TV station will be here to ask you a few questions. You can decide what to do after you speak to them."

With the new knowledge that he would learn more details after speaking with this screenwriter, Lucid decided to go ahead with the interview.

A few days later, two weeks before the beginning of winter break, Lucid met with the screenwriter after school. A woman in her mid-20's, she looked rather aloof, and she wore rather plain clothes. All in all, she seemed like a rather easy-going person.

"Hello!" she greeted as she saw Lucid approach her. "I'm Nayeon Lee. You've heard about me from your teacher, right?"
"Yes. It's nice to meet you."
"Yes, same here. Hmm. Maybe we should go somewhere else for this. There's a lot I want to talk about, and we don't want to be standing here forever."

Hee Yeon, who had been standing behind Nayeon, conveniently led them to the counseling room.

Lu Zhou thought Luo Wenxuan was planning on breaking his wallet, but the place wasn't fancy at all; it was just a normal small restaurant.
Most of the people here were students, professors, and researchers from nearby institutes, such as the Chinese Academy of Sciences or the Institute of High Energy Physics.
Even though it wasn't lunchtime yet, the place was already crowded.
They sat down in a corner, and the waiter quickly came over with some tea and three menus.
While Luo Wenxuan and Lu Zhou were ordering food, Wang Peng went to the kitchen and wandered around. He then calmly sat back down.
Luo Wenxuan was already accustomed to Lu Zhou's bodyguard, so he wasn't fazed. He chatted with Lu Zhou while waiting for the food.
"… The owner of this place is from Hubei. My team and I eat here pretty often, and we always get the Du Chicken. One of my guys said that the Du Chicken here is the most authentic, and it pairs really well with alcohol." 
Lu Zhou drank some warm tea and said, "The boss is from Jiangling city?"
"I think so, I'm not sure… Have you been here?" Luo Wenxuan said. He was slightly surprised.
"Of course not, it's my first time." Lu Zhou smiled and said, "It's because Du Chicken is a famous dish in Jiangling, so when you said authentic, I thought that the boss came from Jiangling."
Luo Wenxuan scratched his head and said, "Oh, so the dish is from Jiangling, you must have eaten it before then."
Lu Zhou shook his head and spoke emotionally.
"We were poor growing up, so I never had the chance to eat it. After I grew up, I never had the chance to eat it as well… Forget about it. How's theoretical physics going? Are there any new discoveries?"
Lu Zhou had been focusing on the moon landing program, and other than paying attention to the latest mathematics news, he didn't have time to keep up with the latest trends in academia.
"The biggest discovery last year was the general solution of the Yang-Mills existence and mass gap." Luo Wenxuan looked at Lu Zhou and said, "It's actually quite unlucky. A lot of professors felt like this accomplishment is worthy of a Nobel Prize in Physics. They didn't expect the Nobel Prize Committee to award the prize to the Quantum-confined Stark effect achievement."
Lu Zhou looked at Luo Wenxuan and smiled.
"It's not unlucky at all. I've already won the Nobel Prize once, so I'm satisfied. If the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences wanted to give me the Nobel Prize again, I'm afraid people in the academic community aren't going to be happy."
For most scholars, the Nobel Prize was their lifelong pursuit.
Most people achieved their accomplishments in their 30s and 40s, but there were plenty of people in their 80s and 90s who were still waiting for a Nobel Prize.
Being able to receive a Nobel Prize in one's 20s was an achievement in and of itself.
Soon after, the waiter came over with a pot full of garlic chicken and green onions. The waiter placed the pot on the rack.
Luo Wenxuan sniffed the delicious pot of food and immediately picked up his chopsticks. He then asked the waiter to bring a few beers.
He still had to work in the afternoon, but a few drinks were fine.
Wang Peng was sitting next to them, stiff as a mummy. He quietly drank his tea. He had to drive later, so he obviously couldn't drink alcohol.
"What's next? You landed a person on the Moon, what now?"
"Me?" Lu Zhou drank a glass of beer and said, "Landing on the Moon is only the first step."
Luo Wenxuan sighed and said, "Wow, I really don't understand how your genius brain works."
Luo Wenxuan studied under Witten at Princeton, and he was quite the genius himself.
But ever since he met this "Lu Zhou" guy, his definition of genius had changed.
There were always bigger fish in the sea.
The two chatted while eating. The table next to them drank too much and started to get rowdy.
Lu Zhou didn't pay attention to what they were talking about, but he couldn't help but notice their loud voices.
"Do you know that Professor Lu made Skyglow?!"
"Of course I know, my friend works at the China Aerospace Corporation. We were just talking about this. Jesus, he really is insane, casually sending people to the Moon."
Lu Zhou raised his eyebrows when he heard them say his name.
Even though he didn't care what they were talking about, he was very much interested in other people's opinions of him.
A man with dark-rimmed glasses poured himself another drink and said, "Pfft, he's nothing… The Americans sent a man to the Moon in the 60s, and now that we finally sent someone there, the Americans are already preparing for Mars."
His friend laughed and said, "Mars? Are you drunk?"
The man with glasses said, "Hey, go on Twitter yourself. NASA tweeted that they are planning to launch a 25-ton life support module to Mars. There's going to be a press conference soon."
The other people sitting at the table were stunned.
"25 tons? How is that possible? They must be exaggerating!"
"There's no f*cking way, let me turn on my VPN and hop onto Twitter."
Even though these people didn't major in aerospace at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, they still had common sense. They knew that there was no way for NASA to send a 25-ton object to the surface of Mars.
The man in glasses knew his friends wouldn't believe him, so he smiled and spoke.
"Apparently, Space-X is going to use their BFR rocket, which is equipped with 31 Raptor engines! Apparently, after they send the life support module to Mars, they'll send 1 to 5 people to Mars. They're already recruiting volunteers worldwide."
Luo Wenxuan was super surprised, and he looked at Lu Zhou.
"… Really?"
Lu Zhou was even more surprised than Luo Wenxuan.

Lu Chuwan knew this. She shot a glance at Fu Zhi and smiled. "I believe Zhizhi isn't that kind of person. Since she is confident that she will be chosen by Professor He to be his disciple, I'm sure she has spent plenty of time brushing up her Physics knowledge. You shouldn't say stuff like that, Tongtong. It'll hurt her feelings." 
Xu Tongtong chuckled. "She thinks that? She thinks she'll be chosen by Professor He to be his disciple? Don't make me laugh, please. She doesn't even have the qualifications to be your disciple, let alone Professor He's." 
Lu Chuwan did not comment. 
She had a sweet-looking face, and she looked as docile as a lamb. Therefore, no matter how harsh or snappish her comments were, people tended to forgive her. 
"Fu Zhi joined our school because of her father's connection to the school authority. I'm sure she must have some loose screws in her brain to make such a presumptuous statement.
"You did not say anything and kept a low profile when your Physics report was appraised by Professor He. I don't know where Fu Zhi got the courage to say something like that.
"Fu Zhi is like a flower vase. She looks pretty on the outside, but in reality, there is nothing inside. She got drunk on quick success and instant benefits. One cannot get along with this kind of person." 
Keeping her head low, Lu Chuwan took a piece of paper and pencil out of her drawer. Her eyes were shining with delight as she heard those remarks about Fu Zhi, but she held herself back. She pulled her phone out and took a quick glance at her WeChat messages. "Ms. Lu, I'll be at the Ren Xin Clinic today. Please remember to bring along the patient's medical report and medications when you come."

At 2:30 in the afternoon, the examination invigilator entered the examination hall with the question papers in her hand.
The invigilator was none other than Qian Wenrui. She surveyed the few bad apples of the class with one sweeping glance before proceeding to announce the things to watch out for during the examination. Then, she smacked the stack of question papers on the table to silence the students before handing out the papers. 
Each question paper was the size of an A4 sheet of paper. Two questions were marked with special symbols, and one of the questions regarded the blueprint of a machine.
Fu Zhi knew at first glance that the questions had to be problems Xiao He had encountered during his research. She reckoned that he had not dared to ask her about them, as she might punish him. Therefore, he had simplified the problems he had encountered and turned them into questions for the students to answer. 
An amateur would have a hard time solving the problems, but that was not the case for her. 
The questions could not be answered in an orthodox way, as they required some mathematical calculations and programming languages. 
The students were given two hours to finish the paper. 
Lu Chuwan's expression changed when she saw the questions. 
She had never come across questions like this before. Not only were the questions complicated, but the data given was incomplete as well. 
She bit her lower lip in frustration, as she did not know where to start.
She turned her head slightly and saw that Fu Zhi had already begun answering the questions. There was no draft paper on her table, so she was writing the answers directly on the answer sheet. The examination had only started five minutes ago, yet she was already on the last question. 
The paper was filled with words, and she even wrote her ideas about solving the problems in Chinese.
Lu Chuwan scoffed, but her heart skipped a beat and her eyes bulged when she saw the Chinese sentences. 
She seemed to know how to answer the questions. However, what piqued her curiosity the most was how Fu Zhi knew the way to solve the problems. 
Without giving Lu Chuwan a chance to look at her answers, Fu Zhi finished the paper in 10 minutes and handed it in. 
Qian Wenrui, who was sitting on the podium, had a terrible impression of Fu Zhi. 
She loathed useless girls like Fu Zhi, and there was a world of difference between her and Lu Chuwan, who was focused on answering the questions. 
'She doesn't have any talent, yet she still doesn't want to work hard to succeed step by step. Luckily, I didn't let her join my class.'
Qian Wenrui did not know what the questions were. When Fu Zhi handed her the answer sheet, she rolled her eyes at her and began studying the questions. 
The questions were complicated, so even she would have a hard time answering them. 


At long last, Fu Zhi, the mysterious heiress who had developed countless technologies was given two guardians by the country! Initially, the Lu Brothers shut her out when she joined the Lu Family. However, after spending some time with her, they began to warm up to her and took turns showing their brotherly love for her by throwing money at her. 
Lu Yumo would say, “My sister just came from the countryside, so don’t scare her.”
Lu Yushen would say, “My sister is fragile, so don’t bully her.”
Lu Yubai would say, “My sister is not good at studying, so don’t laugh at her.”
Nevertheless, it soon became clear to them that the little girl from the countryside was not what they had imagined. 
One day, a reporter took a photo of a professor carrying her purse and having a meal with her.
The professor said, “She is my teacher, and I’m her student.” 
The crowd was surprised. “What?”
Another day, a different reporter snapped a photo of a business magnate serving her tea. 
The business magnate said, “She is my boss, and I’m her employee.”
The crowd was shocked. “What?”
On a different day, a group of reporters spotted the biggest esports bigwig stepping down from his throne and helping her get rid of a scumbag.
The bigwig said, “Stop all this harassment and the rumors. She’s my sponsor.”
The netizens asked, “Just how many supporters do you have?

The country’s official portal responded, “We’re her strongest supporter.”

"I was just coming to that, thanks for the thought Lee." Lee grinned at the teacher's remark. 

As if on cue, Akira got up to introduce herself. "Good afternoon sir, my name is Akira Takahashi," she introduced herself with a warm smile plastered on her face. 

"Okay Akira, I am Mr Zeref your physics teacher. If you have any problems with catching up, you can come to me at anytime."

"Thank you sir."

"Have your seat." She took her seat as soon as he finished his sentence and opened her textbook and note in front of her. 

He walked up to the white boards and wrote  on it. Akira mentally noted, "Nuclear Physics!"

Turning to face the class Mr Zeref began, "Today, we are going to be talking on Nuclear physics. What do you understand by the term? Anybody wants to give it a go?"

Two hands rose into the air, he looked at the two students, one was Rock Lee and the other  Katara. 

"Okay, Lee you go first."

"Yes sir. Nuclear physics is the physics of atomic nuclei and their interactions, especially in the generation of nuclear energy."

"That's good, Katara!" He pointed to the girl who was three seats away from the board. 

"Nuclear physics is the field of physics that studies atomic nuclei and their constituents and interactions."

"Everyone has an idea of what the topic is about now. Akira!" All heads turned in her direction the moment he called on her. 

She stopped what she was writing and looked up at the teacher. "Sir?!"

"Do you understand?"

"Yes sir."

"Then do you mind defining Nuclear physics for the class."

"Okay sir. Nuclear physics is the study of the protons and neutrons at the centre of an atom and the interactions that hold them together in a space just a few femtometres (10-15 metres) across. Examples of nuclear reactions include radioactive decay, fission, the break-up of a nucleus and fusion, the merging of nuclei."

Some of the students had their jaw drop and eyes widened at her definition. Even Mr Zeref couldn't help but feel drawn to her intelligence. 

Sasuke who was in front of her, scoffed a little. "So, Miss Busy Body has something upstairs! Nice one," he mentally noted. 

"Show off." Azula rolled her eyes as she muttered to herself. 
 
"That is very good. It looks like you may not need my help after all Miss Takahashi. Sasuke, you've got competition." As he said this, an unknowing smile broke out from the comers of his lips.  

"What a drag! Can we skip to the teaching proper, already?" Displaying a nonchalant attitude with his chin on his hand, Shikamaru couldn't help but whisper. 


"Other forms of nuclear matter are also studied. Nuclear physics should not be confused with atomic physics, which studies the atom as a whole, including its electrons."

Classes went on as usual, and each time a teacher entered the class, they were impressed with Akira's intelligence. 


At the close of school, Akira packed her bags and waited for Lucy, together the duo made their way out of class. 

In front of the school gate, an atomic silver Lexus LS 500 car was packed, two men in black suit and dashing shades came out from the car and looked around. 


Not long after, Akira and Lucy came passing by. One of the men walked up to her and intercepted her path. 


"Miss, the Chairman sent for you." Then man in black suddenly blurted out, Lucy looked at her with a complicated feeling. 


"Chairman?!"

"Yes, Mr Sato Watanabe wants to have a discussion with Miss Akira."


"Why didn't he just call?" Akira asked the man in front of them. 


"That I cannot answer, Miss Akira. Please come with us."


Akira turned to face Lucy and said, "Hey! Looks like I won't be walking with you today. I'm so sorry."


"It's alright, now get going and learn something? I would be fine," Lucy said to her friend. 

"Thanks." She turned back to face the man, "Let's go."

"Very well," he said before turning and headed back to the car. 

She followed closely behind him, turning her head once to glance at Lucy. When they got to the car he opened the back seat door and stepped aside for her to enter. 


"Thank you."

With that they entered the car and the driver sped away leaving a somewhat stunned Lucy behind.
