Chapter 19 The Highway

Driving down the road to the highway, John asked Amy to attach his magazines for his M16, to his vest, she was able to put two on the front, next to his pistol ammo, in the place his shotgun shells once were. She was also able to fit four magazines on the back of his vest and one on each side. Leaving the extra clips in John's pack. John then started to think about the Androids. He wondered if they had completed the order to kill Dr. Jenner yet.

Meanwhile at the CDC, Dr Jenner was sitting at a desk looking at his computer, trying to figure out why the building did not explode. After searching for a while, Dr. Jenner gave up finding the answer. Dr. Jenner then brought his attention to the front doors, looking at the monitor, the camera was showing 5 people standing there. One of them was banging on the door, and the others were just standing behind him, they all had worried expressions.

The group consisted of 2 men and 3 women. They were all wearing different outfits, dressed in civilian clothes.

Dr. Jenner saw that the group wasn't going to give up, he looked for any weapons on them, but they seemed to only have knives on their waists. Seeing the group was unarmed, starts walking through the halls before quickly arriving in the front of the building. He was holding a rifle and aiming at them, he pressed a key card to the reader and let them in. He then screened them asking if there were any infected, before asking them to take a blood test. The group agreed, so Jenner turned around to lead them, not knowing it was the biggest mistake he could have made.

The man who had knocked on the door, snuck up behind Jenner quickly, and snapped his neck. The group with their first order complete, move Jenner's body outside before they begin to execute the rest of the orders they were given.

Back to John, they were now on the highway driving. They had made slow progress because the further they went from the city, the more congested the highway became. They eventually had to stop, when the RV was unable to fit through the densely packed cars.

The group gets out of their vehicles, and John suggests that they search some of the cars for supplies. The group then split up into groups and started to loot cars. John thinking this is a good time to teach, Amy and the kids, how to loot vehicles, takes them around to different cars. The group of kids were quick learners and had begun to get the hang of looting very quickly. John had basically been teaching them all, what was valuable or not, and how to access if there was any danger involved.

While the rest of the group was looting around the area, Dale was keeping a lookout on top of the RV. He then looked through a pair of binoculars, looking around he spots a horde of walkers, coming straight for them. He freezes and Rick who was looking around saw him, he then looked through his rifles scope and saw the horde.

Rick then runs down the road, telling any group he saw to hide because there are walkers coming. John hearing Rick, has Amy, and the kids get into two cars. John then walks toward the walkers, with his M16 in hand. The group seeing this was confused, and were looking at him, wondering why he wasn't hiding.

As John continued walking toward the walkers, trying to show the group that walkers weren't as dangerous as they thought. Getting into a stance, John aims through the red dot sight. He aims at the walker's heads, shooting one by one. Bodies dropping to the floor, a soft sound coming from the rifle. There were about 120 walkers, but after going through 5 magazines, John had dwindled their numbers down to 20.

John then put his M16 on his back after reloading a fresh magazine. John then pulled out his big ass knife, the knife looking more of a machete than a knife. John then walked over to each walker, they shambled towards him slowly, trying to swarm him, but John would slowly back up while swinging his knife down. Each swing, gruesomely splitting a head in half or decapitating them.

John now a little bloody from his fight with the walkers, walks over to the car that he left the kids. Telling them they were safe, they just looked at him in awe. The boys practically jumping out of the car, they started to jump around him, while imitating his movements and asking how he got so strong.

John with his group began to walk back to the RV, other group member crawling out from under the cars where they had been hiding. With the whole group arriving at the RV, they put all the stuff they had found on the ground, in order to sort it. T-dog came up to them a while later, his arm covered in blood, it seems that he had cut his arm when he was rushing to find a hiding place. Seeing this carol grabbed a bandage, but the blood was still coming out slowly.

With that little episode now over, the group decides not to continue down the highway because they would have to move too many vehicles out of the way. They discussed for a couple minutes before deciding that they would loot some more cars before they turn around and go down a side road that they had seen, around a mile back.

The group then went back to looting, John was keeping an eye on the kids as they searched some cars. Carl and Rob had found quite a lot of useful stuff, it seems they like to compete with each other, they had created their own little rivalry with each other. The girls stayed in a group and found a decent amount of stuff as well.

John calling his little group back, then walking back to the RV while helping them carry some stuff. Reaching the RV many of the group had already come back with their stuff, the group was very surprised when they saw how much stuff John and the kids had found. Talking for a while they hopped into their vehicles and turned around driving for a mile, before turning down a side road.

The sides of the side road were covered with lush and dense trees, painting a very beautiful picture, all around them. Driving down the road for about 10 miles, they saw a sign for a small town. They kept going and eventually passed through a town, driving for a while after they left the town, they saw some farms. Turning into one of them, Daryl opening the gate for them, they enter and drive down the road, Daryl following after closing the gate.

They drive towards a nice house and park outside of it, they then got out but were startled when they an old voice shout at them. Turning they saw an old man with white hair and a nice beard, he was standing their looking at them while holding a shotgun and aiming at them. Some others coming out of the house, when they heard the old man's voice.

The people who came out of the house also looking at them curiously. Rick then raises his hands as he walks forward and begins talking to the old man, Hershel.
