Chapter 10: just because I can

Mia

I wanted to get to the Williams corporation before the appointed time they gave me and I did it.

I entered the building and went to the receptionist to tell her why I was here. She showed me a place to sit in the waiting room.

A number of other students joined me later in the waiting room and not long after someone I believe to be Williams himself came in.

'Good morning everyone' he greeted and we returned his greetings like it was a chorus to a song.

"We are delighted to have all of you here and I hope you'll like it here and most important of all, I hope you'll learn a lot," he said and we nodded.

'So without wasting much time, your files are over there' he pointed towards his right.

'See which one is yours and meet me at my desk' he added and smiled

We did as we were told.

I was second in line to see Williams and answer the necessary questions he would ask.

'Your name please' he asked when it was my turn

'Mia, Mia Montoya' I said nervously

'Oh shit, you are Mia' he asked

'Yes' I answered in an uncertain voice.

'My PA was supposed to call you and tell you not to come here today' he panicked

'Excuse me, but why?' I asked

'Because you won't be doing your field work project with us lady' he answered

'But your PA called me' I said

'Yes, there was a mix up' he said and scratch his head

'Adams Enterprise got you first but there was a mix up and they didn't relay the information to the other companies on time, but they called to fix it. I guess my PA just forgot to call you again' He said.

'Wait what?' I asked in a shocked tone

'Adams enterprise picked me?' I asked again unsure

'Yes' he said

'So why haven't they called me till now' I asked

'I think it's all a mix up but I'll suggest you go there now and find out what happened for yourself' he urged me

'Are you sure that's alright sir?' I asked him

'Yeah you should hurry up though, Logan Adams is not always very nice, you don't want to be on his bad books on your first day' he joked but I didn't see anything funny in this situation.

'By the way cool outfit and good luck' he said

'Thanks' I said before leaving his office.

I booked a cab to Adams enterprise and I couldn't stop thinking on my way there. Why did Adams enterprise pick me? I think this was an intentional act, I'm in trouble.

Williams

I picked up my cellphone to call Logan, I wanted to know why he would stress up a girl in this manner.

'Williams' he answered.

'Your Mia girl was here just now, what's your deal?' I asked

'What do you mean, I don't have any girl ' He said in annoyance

'I picked this lady to work with me, you told me to surrender. You couldn't call her to inform her about the changes, so unprofessional and strange of you and your team' I was mad

'Don't lecture me. I told Kevin what to do, he clearly didn't do his job properly. I will find out what happened and he will get scolded for sure' he assured me.

'Did she leave already?' He asked me

'Yes and I hope you are good to her when she comes. She looks like a nice girl, this is all your fault to begin with' I scolded

'I can assure you that girl has nothing in common with the word nice like you put it' he argued

'How do you mean? U asked him

'Never mind. I'll hang up now, we both have work to get back to' he said and hung up.

Logan

After talking with Williams over the phone, I felt sorry for Mia but that wasn't going to change the plans I had in store for her.

I called Kevin at once. I want to know what happened.

'I asked you to call 10 people and leave 5 for other companies to pick. what did you do?, one person isn't here' I told him

'Boss, there are 10 people waiting for you downstairs' he said and I became confused

'How is that possible?' I asked

'I called 10 students and they are all here, boss, are you looking for someone in particular?' He asked me

'Of course Kevin. We stole a student from Williams yesterday but she's still on her way here because she went to Williams instead, you didn't call her' I cried

'Oh, but boss I called all ten students' he said

'Where are the files?, bring them here' I ordered

'Here boss, they are still separated in the same way you gave me' he said

I checked the files that contained the students I had selected but Mia's name wasn't among. I checked the files with the five students I rejected, Mia's file was there.

I made a mistake.

'It's fine, I see where the error came from. She's on her way here' I said

'What do we do then sir?' Kevin asked me

'There will be 11 students instead of 10 when she gets here. Who do I send home?' He explained

I massaged my forehead trying to come up with a solution.

'We'll work with all eleven of them, we have no choice because we caused this, it's not their fault' I stated.

'Ok boss, I'll check if the last student has arrived and send them in' he said before leaving.

'She's not here boss,' Kevin reported 10 minutes later.

'It's more than 30 minutes past time, let's get started she will join us whenever she gets here' I said

'Welcome to Adams Enterprise' I said and then started to give the students an orientation and run down of how we are going to work in the coming few weeks with Kevin standing next to me, adding comments where necessary.

Someone knocks on the door.

'Come in' i said

I never saw any worker dress this way before. Mia wore pants instead of the usual skirts the female employees and other students were wearing. She paired the pants with a white long sleeve shirt and left a few buttons flying, she wore a pair of canvas instead of the high inch heels her colleagues were wearing. She wore simple dotted earrings, her hair was tied behind her back, her lips were glossy just like the last time I saw them, she looked simple but elegant and nice.

'Thumbs up Mia, you always have to be extra' my own voice echoed inside my head. I prayed that I didn't say it out loud to the hearing of others.

She wasn't going to mess with my head, I had plans for her before she came in and I started to act immediately.

'Look who decided to finally grace us with her presence, you're late miss' I frowned

She bowed her head to the floor and said nothing.

'You can stay at that spot till I finish if that's what you want' I said with a harsh tone that the other students started whispering.

Mia moved slowly to sit. Her demeanour was so different today, she wasn't feisty as I expected her to be.

'Mia, that's your name right' I said to her.

'Yes sir' she answered.

'Just a random question' I said and she nodded

'What could be the reason why a girl will start college at 22 or 23?' I asked

I was being petty right now, but I didn't care. Mia was quiet for a while.

'I..I I don't know sir' she said

'As usual, you never know anything do you?' I said and I could feel the stares

'I mean, yeah you can't possibly know that' I coughed

There was a hand up.

'Yes Olivia?' I asked her

she flashed me a smile and I just nodded. Her lipstick was too heavy. It was like she used human blood,and she had too much jewellery on.

'It could be due to no funds, or maybe the individual is too slow to understand things, or maybe she just keeps failing' she answered

'Very good, good spirit. I like that you are spontaneous and that's the kind of spirit we need here' I complimented her before she took her seat.

'You last reason makes sense, maybe they are too slow to understand things' I added

Kevin cleared his throat, I'm sure he noticed I was going overboard with this.

'This is my PA Kevin, he will fill you in on all that's necessary for today. See you guys tomorrow' I said and went to my office.

'Do this thing right and with everything in you, who knows you might be working for us in the future so we will be evaluating you from here' I said

Back in my office I kept thinking maybe I went too far on this hate thing for Mia.

I mean I know I didn't say it was her I was referring to but she knows and besides it wasn't professional at all.

I checked my watch and realised it was time for lunch break but I wasn't going today.

Just then there was a knock on my door.

Mia came in.

'What do you want?' I asked while trying to act cool.

'I know what you did today, that was so petty of you but my question is why? She asked me

'Don't fool yourself, you are not the only 22 year old college student' I said

'I didn't say anything, but you just confirmed my doubts. I want to know if it's a professional move to talk about private information in public, and why are you in my case when you are the reason I'm late today in the first place?' She yelled

Now this was Mia, the arrogant Mia, disrespectful Mia, didn't take up to four hours to unlock her, I just wondered in my head what gave her the gods to speak to me in this manner.

'You are talking to Logan Adams of Adams Enterprise, you are just a student, know your place and tune down the volume of your voice' I yelled

'Why did you pick me then?' She asked me

'I can pick any student I want just because I can, now leave my office' i ordered her

Truth be told, Mia wasn't arrogant. She just doesn't take being bullied or being trampled on. She's always ready to fight.
