The Heart of the Winds

Cover by Rinochannn --- The world was once ruled by demons that terrorized all the other races. The races banded together and formed an alliance, wiping out most of the demon race and forcing the survivors to go into hiding. With the fall of the demons, the races were finally free. However, the peace did not last for long. Twelve years after the war, the human race broke the truce and attacked the other races, killing and enslaving all of them. Finally, with all the other races out of the way, the human race declared war on one another. After many years of bloody conflict and betrayal, only two human kingdoms remain out of the original seven. Kies is an orphan that was adopted into a noble family that is known for producing powerful magic-users. He finds that he can use magic, but since his magic lacks offensive capabilities, it is deemed useless. Not Human

"Did the demon say who it was?" Rui asks.

"No. Apparently, she doesn't even know who it is either. She said that the only person who knew was their leader," Lentis tells her. "Speaking of which, do we know how many demons there were and what happened to them?" Lentis looked around the room, seeing if anyone knew the answer. It seemed like no one knew the answer.

"Why not ask the demon?" Siegfried suggests.

"We did. She told us that there were five demons including herself, but we only saw four. There were the two that we fought, and then there was another one that was taken down by Rui's team. The fourth tried breaking into the palace but was unsuccessful and after suffering injuries, escaped. As for the fifth demon, we don't know where they were or what they were up to. That's why I'm asking to see if anyone saw them," Lentis explains.

The room went silent as everyone tried to recall if they had seen another demon. Lentis walked around the room a few times before he went back to his chair, sat back down, and said. "Forget it, we can try getting it out of the demon later. Let's get back on topic-"

"Wait." Everyone in the room turned to Jenabas. "I think I know where the fifth demon was and who their target was as well." Jenabas paused after she finished her sentence and tried to remember what the person that was taken away looked like. Everyone's eyes remained on Jenabas, waiting for her to continue. A few seconds went by and Lentis waved his hand, ushering Jenabas to go on with what she was saying.

"Oh sorry. I think we saw the fifth demon appear right before we were attacked by the other two. There was this soldier. I think he was more to the younger side? But anyway, he disappeared in front of our eyes. I think it was the fifth demon that had taken him."

"You sound unsure," Lentis noted.

"Well, I didn't actually see the demon, but I did see a flash come from the sky, and the next thing we knew, the person in front of us was gone." Although Jenabas didn't see the demon, she was certain that it was them who had abducted the soldier.

"Can you describe the person that was taken away by them?" Lentis asked.

Jenabas crossed her arms and legs and went deep into thought, trying to remember how the person had looked. "If I remember right, he was wearing light armor, wielded a sword, and... had light-colored eyes?"

"What do you mean?" It wasn't clear to Lentis what Jenabas meant by light-colored eyes.

"His eyes weren't black. Well, they were, but not black-black. A bit lighter than that. Gray, I suppose? Yeah, I guess it was close to gray. Actually, it might just be gray."

Siegfried scratched his head and said, "Huh, I think I know someone who has grayish eyes. I can't seem to remember their name though."

"What do you mean that I'm one of you? I'm not a demon," Kies asked the demon confusedly.

"I mean that we're on the same side," the demon explained.

"Why would we ever be on the same side?"

"You're not human."

"What?" Kies didn't understand a single thing the demon was saying. She was claiming that they were allies which didn't make sense already, but she is also telling him that he wasn't human which was even more unbelievable.

"If you don't believe me, why don't you go ask that thing that is helping you. I'm pretty sure it knows of your identity." Kies looked around at the wind spirits flying around him. They had stopped making a ruckus and were concealing themselves in the trees, carefully watching them. As much as Kies wanted to ask them, he wasn't sure if they understood his language. Even if they had, he couldn't understand their language, and the one that did speak his language didn't seem to be here.

"Are you being serious?" Kies asked the demon.

"Yes, everything I say is the truth," The demon said calmly and with a straight face. It was impossible to tell if she was actually trying to deceive him or not. If what the demon said was true, then the things that were happening to him made sense. But, Kies wasn't entirely sure yet. He needed more information.

"Can you tell me more about it?"
