Dueling Club | 3rd May 1989 | 3 PM

Charlus was waiting for his opponent to come onto the stage. He became more confident after defeating Melissa and had a clear strategy to win the duel.

Tatch was a big person. He towered over Charlus at 5' 2''. He was very fat too. This made Charlus smile. Tatch didn't like that smile.

"You think I'm fat?"

Charlus shook his head.

"I just think that a big personality might not be the best for duelling."

"I'm sorry? Do you think you can beat me? You - a fourth-year? How many spells did you even learn?"

Charlus didn't say anything and went to his place.

"Begin." The referee signalled the start of the duel.

Before Tatch could even react, Charlus started attacking him with spells. The choice of his spells though was weird.

"Rictusempra!"

Tatch couldn't avoid any of Charlus' spells without falling off the stage so he had to block them with a Protego.

"Protego!"

Charlus purposely waited for Tatch to stop his spell before sending the next one. Tatch saw the next spell coming in and cast another Protego.

The onlooking seniors were very impressed with Charlus' tactics. Since Tatch couldn't dodge any spells, he had to block them regardless of what their effect was. Even if he was hit by the simple tickling spell, he would have a great disadvantage in the duel. However, if he kept on defending without attacking, he would be countering every Rictusempra with a Protego. The amount of magic taken to cast a Protego was twice as much as that for a Rictusempra. Over the next few minutes, Tatch would be magically exhausted and would lose the duel.

As the seniors and Charlus had expected, Tatch's movements became sluggish 3 minutes into the duel. Tatch could no longer bear defending the entire duel and decided to go on the offensive.

Charlus noticed that Tatch was casting a spell other than the Shielding Charm and rolled towards Tatch. Tatch's spell missed Charlus. Charlus aimed a knockback spell at Tatch after he rolled towards him.

The spell tripped Tatch and he fell flat on his face. Charlus immediately brought his wand to Tatch's head.

"Victory - Charlus. Charlus - 2 wins, 1 loss. Tatch - 1 win, 2 losses."

Charlus sat down on one of the benches. He drank some water from the water bottles provided to the participants. While he was sitting, a senior sat beside him.

"That was some clever work you did back there. Amazing spell work. You have great reflexes too. You are simply cut out for duelling."

Charlus looked at the Senior with a curious expression.

"Oh! Buchanan Barnes. You can call me Bucky. I'm a 7th year."

"Charlus."

"I know. You're famous around here. In the whole school really. Not many people get to study under the great Nicholas Flamel."

Charlus blushed.

"I was lucky."

"Anyway, where did you learn to duel like that?"

Charlus had to find an answer to that question and he finally decided to blame it on his godfather.

"My godfather taught me. He was a.... an Auror when he was younger. He fought against the death eaters when Voldemort was still active."

"Voldemort? Oh! You're from Britain!"

"Why do you think I'm from Britain based on that?"

"Voldemort was never active in these areas. He only focused on Britain and Scotland. Since there isn't any real magical society in Scotland, you are most probably from Britain."

Voldemort was never active in France? Charlus found that quite curious. While that made sense as there were fewer muggle-borns in Beauxbatons than what he would expect at Hogwarts going by his godfather's stories.

"I'm sorry. I have to get going. I have a match right now." Charlus stood up.

"Back-to-back matched after that one? You are unlucky. Nice talking to you. Good luck on your match." Bucky stood up and went his way.

Charlus went to the stage he had to go to and saw that his opponent - Gamin, was already waiting for him.

"Sorry for making you wait." Charlus apologized to both the referee and Gamin. He then quickly rushed to his side of the stage.

"Begin."

Both Charlus and Gamin didn't do anything for half a minute. After the wait, Gamin circled his wand, the wand movement for the Shield Charm. The minute he did that, Charlus felt that he was up to something weird. Charlus had not attempted to cast a spell yet his opponent was casting a shield? Charlus was correct in his assumptions.

Gabin changed his spell movement midway and cast a disarming charm instead. Charlus was ready for it and dodged it. He immediately struck Gabin with a disarming charm and Gabin's wand flew into Charlus' hands.

"Victory - Charlus. Charlus - 3 wins, 1 loss. You are qualified for the final eight. Gabin - 0 wins, 3 losses. You are disqualified."

Charlus saw that Gabin was looking furiously at someone else who was also in the middle of a duel. He looked at that person and saw that person was also using the same technique that Gabin had, except he had won.

"Wow. Should have known that it wasn't original. Whoever came up with this method is an absolute genius."
