-Mei's flashback-
One evening, Mei was making food for Rui to have dinner with made-in-home dishes.
Her phone vibrated and she glanced at it.
-Text from My Hubby-
She opened the message.
-"I'll be late... something urgent came up."-
-"Hmph. Whatever."-
Mei texted that simple word and went to bed angrily without even eating herself.
After a few hours, Rui rushed into their bedroom and slide into the bed beside his wife who was pretending to be asleep.
Rui knew how to wake up his sleeping beauty, so he kissed her. He pushed his tongue inside her mouth and she pushed him away.
"Hands off! Who are you? I don't know you." She got off the bed quickly.
"Let's eat, wifey~." Rui grabbed her hand and lead her to the kitchen.
"Let me go! Let go, Chen Rui!" She yelled all the way.
"Oh, now you remember my name." Rui glanced back at her with a grin on his lips.
Mei shut up and looked away with a pouting face.
"Prepare food, as promised." Rui sat on the chair and crossed his fingers as he rests his chin on them. "You can just heat it since the food is ready anyways. He said with a commanding tone and with a grin on his face.
-End of flashback-
Something grabbed Mei's cloth and was pulling on it which caused her to regain her senses.
"Mommy! I'm hungry." Xue complained. "What are you thinking about?" He rolled his eyes.
"Nothing, honey. Go sit, I'm bringing the food now." Mei smiled and took two plates in her hands and put them on the table. It was grilled chicken that Xue and Mei loved with salad and bread.
"Yummy!" Xue started digging in the food.
-The next morning-
[WAKE UP! RISE AND SHINE! WAKE UP! RISE AND SHINE! WAKE UP!]
The alarm kept bugging while a voice screamed those words. Mei presses on the off button of the clock causing it to stop making noises. She opened her eyes and looked at the clock. It's exactly 7:29 am.
"The alarm rang one minute early this time..." Mei rubbed her hair as she glanced at Xue who was deeply asleep. She smiled looking at her son sleeping peacefully.
Her heart was always at peace as long as she knew Xue was fine. After all, he is the only reason for her to live now.
The same goes for the child. He only cares about his mother. He can't sleep one night without knowing if she got home or not.
Is he spoilt? No, he is just too scared to lose her too. He doesn't have a father; which causes him to give everything to his mother.
"Mm... Mommy!.." Xue screamed as he sat upon the bed panting.
"What's wrong honey?!" Mei dropped the water glass she was holding and rushed to him. She didn't even notice one of the glass sticking in her feet.
"M-mommy... I had a dream. You left me..." The child sobbed as he held his mother tightly. Tears fell from his eyes wetting up Mei's shoulder.
"I won't ever leave you. Don't cry. Only babies cry." Mei pulled Xue's head off her shoulder and wiped his tears off his cheek. She forcefully smiled to not make the kid sadder.
"t's time for school now. Go get ready."
"Ok..." The child nodded as he exited the bedroom.
Mei was about to get up but the broken glass' parts under her feet started hurting her. She took them off and applied some medicine and bandage on them.
-At work-
After driving Xue to his school, Mei went to check how the company was going. After all, she is the president now.
She got of her blue car and walked inside the building. Her heels were less high than usual but her height was still as tall. She wore a white blouson with black leggings. A tie was wrapped under her collar and around her neck.
"Good morning, ms. president." Everyone greeted her as she entered the office heading towards her office room.
The note [President's Office] was written on the door. Mei grinned softly as she opened the door. Dust came out making her cough.
"Ahem! Ahem!" She waved the dust away with her hands as she entered the room.
"It's still... like before." She turned around looking around the big office filled with piles of documents in a mess.
"Rui..." she mumbled as she touched the chair remembering the times he made her sit here, or when she fed him because he overworked without even eating. Tears filled her eyes. She blinked fast trying to not make one teardrop fall as if it was a bet she made and she would lose if she cries.
Manager Shuu knocked on the door before entering.
"Ma'am. Should I ask someone to clean it up?" He asked as he looked around the office room.
"No. I'll do it." She smiles softly and closed the door on Shuu's face.
Shuu was surprised by her reaction. He didn't know what to think so he just headed to his work.
Mei clean up the dust and grabbed the documents to put them in good order since they were in a mess. On the front part of the document was written [From Rui] at the top and [To Mei] right above. Mei raised an eyebrow surprised as she saw the letters on the paper and grabbed it.
["Dear Mei. At this point, maybe I'm no longer here by your side. I hope you'll forgive me for ruining your life."]
After reading this, Mei couldn't hold back her tears anymore and shook her head no. "You didn't, idiot..." She then went back to reading.
["You should go see doctor Oliver. At Zing hospital. Just tell him you're my wife."]
That's all it was written in the first letter. Mei didn't have the time to think and ran outside of the office fast. Her legs were bleeding on her heels but she didn't care nor feel the pain.
Everyone was surprised by seeing her like this. She only reacts when it's about her family. They thought maybe something happened to Xue'er.
Mei parked near the hospital and entered. She asked the receptionist about doctor Oliver. The receptionist said he was busy and she needed an appointment. Only then a middle-aged man walked towards Mei and tapped on the receptionist's table.
"Come with me." He said with a soft smile.
Mei followed the man with a frown on her face. She didn't know the man but she had to follow him to know more about what Rui wanted her to know.
After arriving they both seated on chairs.
"I'm Chen Rui's wife." Mei finally broke the silence between the both of them.
"I know." The man said as he avoided her gaze.
"He said I should look for doctor Oliver here. Do you know him?" She asked with a calm face.
"It's me." Oliver sighed.
"I see. So what's about Rui?" Mei asked posing her hands on the table, eager to know.
"He... had lung cancer." The doctor looked away more as if in shame to not be able to save his patient.
"Ah..." Mei's face didn't change a lot. But inside she felt a whole storm going inside her whole body.
"I'm sorry... he had still some time left but the medicine lost impact at some point..."
"Medicine?" Mei raised an eyebrow.
"Yes. I gave him to prevent the disease to get worse. But it didn't function anymore ..."
Mei thought for a second and remembered something.
-Flashback-
Mei opened the wardrobe and found a packet of medicines.
'What's this for?..'
Someone grabbed the medicine away from her hand. It scratched her hand a bit making it bleed. A paper cut.
It was Chen Rui. He looked really mad and glared at her with cold eyes. It was frightening.
"Wh-whats wrong, Chen Rui?.." she said as her hand was bleeding but he didn't pay attention to it and walked away with his medicine.
"Mind your own business."
-End of flashback-
Mei then realized why Rui reacted like this. It was because he knew he will die soon. He was afraid to get attached to her. Not did he want her to get too attached to him.
'What for? Why did you do this? Did you want to save me from the pain? But it is causing me more pain, Rui...' Mei's eyes filled with tears as she stood up from the chair and walked outside.
"Wait! Your legs are still bleeding. You need to treat it." the doctor yelled but no one heard him. Mei already left the hospital with her car.
Mei drove extremely fast on the highway to get her anger out and sadness as well. She didn't know what to do anymore. Should she be angry? Sad? Or grateful? She was lost.
She then saw a bar, she needed a few drinks. She drove there and entered the bar.
There were fewer people since it was still afternoon. People only come when it's evening or night. Most of the tables were deserted. She took a seat at the nearest table in front of her.
"Xue'er," Mei mumbled and looked at her phone.
She texter her mother-in-law.
-"Pick up Xue'er for me, mom."-
-"Alright"- Zi replied after a few minutes.
Mei could now drink at peace. She didn't want her son to suffer because of her drinking or anything.
"Ten bottles of Whiskey."
The bar's waiter was confused about what he heard.
"What?" he asked again.
"Ten bottles of whiskey. Are you deaf?!"
"No. Wait..." the man grabbed five and walked towards the table she was sitting on. He went back and got five more.
Mei started drinking to her heart's content. She could finally cry all she wanted because her mind was too slow to react to anything. She drank seven bottles and it was already night. It took her some time to drink because she didn't have the habit to drink so much.
Mei felt a hand on her shoulder. She shivered and looked at the person posing their hand on her shoulder.
