After I've opened the book "Basic Spear arts" on the first page was the proper stance when using a spear. Since I'm right-handed I took a look at the right-handed style of the spear stance.
When holding a spear, your left hand must hold onto near the tail of the spear but leave about 2 inches of the end. The left hand must be stationed near the left side of your waist.
Your right hand will hold the spear a couple of inches higher than your left hand. While holding the spear make sure that the tip of the spear is always in front of your enemy's eyes. If you brought it down it will leave your upper body unguarded.
This stance will make it easy to guard your left and right side of the body and the lower parts too.
After memorizing the stance I went and flip it to the next page. The page after talks about thrusts or stabs. The book mentioned two types of basic thrusts or stabs, let's just call it stabs since it's easier to say.
A short stab is while holding your stance is to stab. The left hand will go to the front of the abdomen while the right-hand holding the other end will do a stabbing motion at the enemy. After the stab, you will quickly return the spear to its previous position.
A Long stab is your left arm will end up under your right armpit and same as the short stab. This stab will have a longer range than the short stab keeping the enemy from getting close to you. After the stab, the same as the short stab quickly return the spear to its previous position.
After reading about the stabs I turned to the next page where it talked about slashing. The slashing can be used when your spear got parried or when you block it got sent upwards.
When your spear gets parried it can be sent to the upper and lower right or upper and lower left. When it gets parried you will slash at the weapon of the enemy if they want to attack to block it or slash at the enemy and quickly bring it back to the stance.
When you block the force of the enemy can send your weapon upwards. Slashing it downwards with the momentum of the downward motion can damage your enemy while keeping your stance.
The book also listed some combinations that can be made, like when slashing you can transition to stabbing at the enemy.
After I was done reading it. I looked up only to see Gildarts and Cana staring at me. Seeing this I got embarrassed.
"Sorry I got immersed reading this book." I apologized to them.
" No problem at least from your attitude I can see that you're willing to learn." Gildarts said with a Grin.
" Anyway let's go to a weaponsmith shop to buy you a training weapon." Said Gildarts as he walked outside.
We found a weapon shop and bought a training spear for my training. After that, we went to the forest west of Magnolia. Where we found a clearing and chopped a tree to create three chairs and sat down.
As we sat down Gildarts started teaching us about magic.
Magic is the physical embodiment of the spirit. When the physical spirit of an organism connects with the spiritual flow of nature, the spirit forms Magic as a product of the connection. Though Magic goes beyond reason, it is stillborn of reason and it takes an enormous amount of concentration and mental ability to use it.
One's magical powers are also tied to one's life force. Only ten percent of the world's population is able to use Magic, which is noted to keep a balance between ordinary people and those with Magic.
To utilize Magic, a Mage must use the Magic Power in their body, which is composed of Ethernano, the source of Magic Power for all Mages. Every Mage has a container of Ethernano inside their body that determines the limits of their Magic Power.
In the case that it becomes empty, Ethernano will come from the atmosphere and enter the Mage's body and, after a while, their Magic Power shall return to normal. However, recent studies have identified another, unused, part of a Mage's Magic container that contains a large amount of dormant power: the Second Origin.
If a Mage somehow manages to unlock their Second Origin, they will then receive an enormous boost in Magic Power, or they can wait until the right moment to unleash the Magic Power of their Second Origin in order to gain an advantage in the battle.
It has been later revealed by Ultear that a Mage can access the magical strength they will possess in the future via her Arc of Time: Third Origin. However, after the power fades, the receiver will never be able to use magic again.
Some powerful mages (or certain other magical beings) are able to pass on Magics, often the rarest, to other Mages for them to utilize. Doing this leaves a mark in the form of a tattoo on the Mage's body that seems to fade away if they don't have access to the Magic that was given to them. Only four cases of this are currently known:
Mavis Vermillion thrice has momentarily allowed Cana Alberona to borrow Fairy Glitter. The mark left was a tattoo on Cana's right forearm.
The Celestial Spirit King transferred Aquarius' Water Magic to Lucy Heartfilia. The mark appears across her collar bone and is the same one Aquarius has in the same spot.
Silver Fullbuster transferred his Ice Devil Slayer Magic to Gray Fullbuster. The mark appears on his right arm. Unlike the other cases, the Magic seems to be permanent, and he is able to make the mark appear or disappear using his own free will.
Natsu Dragneel managed to gather the residual Magic that the deceased Fire Dragon King Igneel left within him to use a one-time ability known as Fire Dragon King Mode. This manifested itself in the form of a Dragon-shaped tattoo on his right bicep.
