Lily's Hesitation

Lily has raised Ava to be strong and independent so that she could live a good life and wouldn't have to depend on others for anything. As long as her daughter had a good future, find an excellent man to marry, and could live happily, her life would be fulfilled. Now, Ava did find an excellent boyfriend, but Lily was hesitant because she never wanted her daughter to marry into a rich family. She always felt the people who live for money, never live a happy life. She would rather Ava lived an average but happy life.

Lily was worried that her daughter wouldn't be able to fit in such a rich family if she got married to Oliver Knight. Knight family belonged to the upper class and they were ordinary upper, middle-class people, they didn't know anything about the Knight family or their class.

Looking at Oliver, Lily didn't know why she felt a familiarity as if she had seen and talked to him before, but no matter how hard she tried to search her memory she couldn't remember where she had seen him.

"Ava, do you think Oliver is familiar with us?" Lily suddenly asked.

Ava just finished peeling shrimp, she looked at her mother and said with a bright smile, "Well, he is familiar with me."

"No, I mean, do you think we have met with him before? I don't know, he seems familiar like I have seen him somewhere. "

"Mom, it's normal. Oliver's interviews often publish in financial magazines or newspapers with his pictures. I am sure you have seen him in one of the magazines." Ava said lightly.

Lily shook her head unconsciously, she seemed to have a fragment of memory when she saw Oliver's face but it wasn't clear, so she couldn't put it together to understand what it was related to.

At the dinner table, James praised Oliver and the two chatted happily.

"Lily, do you know how good Oliver is at chess, I almost lost to him twice." James smiled and said happily taking a sip of his wine.

Lily said with a helpless face: "How do you know that he didn't let you win deliberately? Look how happy you are now."

"No Auntie, Uncle's chess skills are really good, I need to learn more to win with him," Oliver said modestly in a very pleasing tone.

Ava looked at Oliver and was amazed at how he was treating her parents so attentively. His serious appearance was so charming that it's no wonder so many women wanted to be with Oliver.

Being flattered by Oliver, James was even happier, he quickly raises his glass to cheer him. James's favorite drink was white wine and he loved to drink whenever he was in a good mood. Today, not only he had a good time playing chess with Oliver but also he accompanied James to drink wine so he was naturally very impressed by him.

"Dad, how many games did you win?" Ava asked with a smile.

"We had three games and I won two, the last one was a draw," James said proudly as if it was a glorious thing to win against Oliver.

"Uncle is really good at chess. Next time, we will continue to compete whenever I have some free time." Oliver also said happily.

Ava just smiled but didn't say anything. She liked how Oliver was so warm around her parents. The atmosphere at the dining table was very harmonious and the meal was quite enjoyable with a lot of laughter.

To please James, Oliver had to drink a lot. He didn't mind though he was also in a very good mood by being able to meet Ava's parents. When it was time to go home Lily suddenly called Ava.

"Ava, come with me. I have something to give you." Lily said lightly.

"OK mom, coming. Sarah, please pour a glass of hot water for Oliver." Ava said worriedly and looked at Oliver's red face.

Oliver raised his eyes and smiled at her.

Lilly entered her bedroom and went to her dresser. She opened the drawer and took out a beautiful jewelry box. Ava was familiar with this box, it was Lily's dowry that she adored. Ava remembered when she was a child she used to secretly take out the jewelry from this box to wear and her mom would get angry every time she found out and would beat her up.

"Ava, are you two serious, or is it just a passing relationship?" Lily asked seriously, she still didn't approve of Ava being with Oliver but she couldn't stop Ava from dating him if she really liked him.

"Mom, for now, we are serious. We really like each other but I don't know about the future." Ava said with a light smile.

"OK, I have no objection to you being with him for the time being, but one thing as a mother I must remind you. You two are an adult so it's normal to get intimate with each other, but you should take measures to prevent any unwanted pregnancy before you get married." Lily said with a heavy heart. When did her daughter grow up so much? Soon she will be married and start her own family.

Ava bit her lips and with a smile, she nodded her head: "I know Mom."

"Oliver is from the upper class if you get pregnant before marriage then his family might look down on you, so you must use protection. And don't take birth control pills, those are really harmful and will hurt your body in the future." Lily took Ava's hand and explained everything. She felt it was her responsibility to remind these things to her daughter.

Ava looked at Lily's expectant eyes and felt like crying, her mother was so understanding. Ava thought she would embarrass Oliver but her mother not only accepted them but also was giving her motherly advice. She was really like coconut, tough from outside but soft from inside.

Lily took out a talisman from the jewelry box and gave it to Ava, "This is a peace token I ordered for you from the temple a few days ago, always wear it when you go out. It will keep you safe."

"Mom, keep it for yourself. I'm ok." Ava got a little emotional because of her mother's loving and caring words.

"Silly girl, this is specially ordered for you and it has your name on it. I already have one." Lily said with a soft smile and her eyes were full of motherly love.

Ava knew although Lily was a strong woman but she was a bit superstitious. As Ava was living outside she couldn't see her every day that made her worried and that's why she asked for the peace token.

"Thank you, Mom." Ava jumped into Lily's arm and hugged her tightly, this time she didn't stop her tears from fall.

"My silly daughter!" Lily hugged her back and said in a choked voice: "Ava, that day at the office, I was angry with you and scolded you badly, please don't take it to heart, I was just worried about you. You refused to tell me anything and that made me very sad."

"Mom, I am really sorry, I just didn't want you to worry for no reason." Ava shook her head and said earnestly.

"OK! Stop crying, let's put it all behind. It's late you two should go back." Lily compromised. As long as her daughter was happy, she didn't care about anything else.

Ava took the talisman and went out of the bedroom with red eyes.
