Magic!

AN- '''...things written inside triple quotes (''') means that they are written in a book or a letter or a parchment...'''

--------------------------

{Black Cottage, England}

{04:14 PM, 4th June, 1988}

'''...Wingardium Leviosa, pronounced Win-GAR-dee-um lev-ee-OH-sa, is one of the most basic charms that is mainly used to levitate and direct a non-living target. The amount of mana you have to channel is directly proportional to the weight of the target so although this spell has limited uses in real life, it could be a good base for you to start learning. The wand motions for the spell are a swish and a flick, students are advised to focus on imagining their target (most likely a quill) flying under the effect of their magic...'''

Rigel finished reading up on the spell and then placed the book aside, he focused on the quill that he had prepared beforehand and concentrated on making it levitate.

"~Wingardium Leviosa~"

He intoned clearly, perfectly copying the wand motions as shown in the picture below the book. The quill immediately followed his wand's flicking movement, his eyes widened at his first magical feat but the quill fell down soon as his concentration was broken by the several windows that popped up in front of him.

[Skill created {Wand-focused Casting}]

--------------------------

[Wand-focused Casting(Passive) lv-1]

[You have begun on your journey to cast magic through a wand, a modernized method of channeling mana, this method is known for its focused approach and the ease with which your mana can be channeled.

-5% to Mana used for spells.

+5% to spell success rate]

--------------------------

[Spell Learned {Levitation Charm}]

--------------------------

[Levitation Charm(Active) Lv-1 (0/10)]

[The very first spell and most basic levitation spell you learn in your schooling, works well on inanimate objects but needs a constant flow of mana to work.

-1 Mana used per Kg per minute

25% success rate.]

--------------------------

...

Rigel blinked a couple of times as he read through the two notification tabs that appeared before him, it was a little bit odd seeing the success rate being mentioned in the skill description but then again he figured that it would go away if he leveled the spell up. Rigel then peaked into his status window and his total mana had dropped from 25 to 24.

'It takes 1 Mana minimum to do this spell, I could quickly concentrate and do it 10 more times and then compare to see what changes.'

He looked at the quill again and concentrated once again, after doing the proper wand motions and incantation the quill flew up once again, this time he held directed the quill to float around his table before letting it fall down.

He repeated the process 8 more times, every time the quill flew up, and followed his commands perfectly. Rigel was puzzled but he put that worry in the backseat for now as he looked at the notification that popped up again.

--------------------------

[Spell {Levitation Charm} leveled up!]

--------------------------

[Levitation Charm(Active) Lv-2 (0/100)]

[The very first spell and most basic levitation spell you learn in your schooling, works well on inanimate objects but needs a constant flow of mana to work.

-1/2 Mana used per Kg per minute

66% success rate.]

--------------------------

'So both the mana cost went down while simultaneously the success rate went up, but what does success rate mean, I managed to do the spell every time and the success rate was just 25%.'

Rigel thought about it before he tried something else, he started counting backward from 100 in his mind while he attempted the spell again. On the first try the quill flew up once again like every time, same result on the second try, and on the third. Just when he wanted to give up on this topic for a while, he tried again and on the fourth try, the spell failed. The quill didn't even budge but when he looked at his mana it sat exactly at 13.

'So maybe the game system is calculating the success rate on real-life conditions, like when I'm not fully focused on performing the spell, for example, if I try to throw a spell while dodging another and I'm not fully focused then the spell has a 66% chance of success.'

The logic made sense in his mind, as he repeatedly tried the spell again and again, his magic should get used to performing that spell, something like a muscle memory. Magic should get easier by virtue of repetition, that's why it was mentioned in the books that most aurors weren't able to produce a corporal patronus in the presence of dementors, real-life situations and stress should interfere with magic.

'This just makes Occlumency all the more necessary...' Rigel thought as he looked towards the locked Library. Sirius hadn't allowed Rigel to explore the library which was obviously filled with dark magic, and he was quite confident that no one would be able to take a sneak peek into his mind otherwise the whole world would go to hell on his very first potions class.

'But there are several other advantages of Occlumency that were mentioned across various fanfictions, and although most of them might not be true, there was no harm in trying... Now I just have to figure out a way to convince Sirius to allow me to go shopping in quite possibly the largest collection of Dark Arts books in London.'

Rigel shook his head, there was no reason to rush, he still had almost 3 months before the term starts and he would get his freedom back, and if every spell followed a linear progression system like the Levitation spell did, then he was sure he would be quite busy during the whole time.

He opened the book again and turned to the next spell.

'''...Lumos, pronounced LOO-mos, is one of the simplest charms ever created, it illuminates the tip of the caster's wand, allowing the caster to see in the dark. One of the easiest spells to master, there is no wand movement required, but the students are implored to focus on their desire to see in the darkness to master the spell, accompanied by of course the incantation...'''

...

Rigel jabbed his wand and said loudly, "~Lumos~"

A soft light burst from the tip of his wand as a small smile lit up his face.

...

"~Nox~"
