Chapter 1Mumbling

Austria, August 17th 1788

10:06 PM

At this moment, on a rainy night, a certain mansion was really busy. An important boy was about to be born. He was the heir of both the Hügel house, and the Von Neumann house, two noble houses with a very particular reputation in Austria right now.

A humble looking woman, looking to be around 30-40 years old, was holding a baby boy in her arms. He was wrapped with a white cloth, and was looking curiously at the woman.

"Lady Frida, congratulations. He's a healthy boy."

A woman laid on a bed right now, in spite of looking tired and having just given birth to a baby, anyone could say that she was pretty beautiful and charming. Her hair was long and blonde, really looking completely golden, and her eyes were as blue as the ocean. She was smiling, and had tears in those same eyes.

Soon, she stretched her arms to pick the little boy. "Please, come to mummy, honey!" the woman, whose name seemed to be Frida, said.

The humble looking woman handed the baby to his mother. As the lady's sight was still blurry because of the effort during the childbirth, only now could she see her child's face neatly.

The baby already had a bit of hair, it looked just like his mother's, golden blonde, on the other hand, his eyes were pretty dark. If his mother wasn't looking directly at them right then, she would've sworn they were pitch-dark, but she noticed that they were just extremely dark brown.

Still, however, his face looked awkward to her, it wasn't like a newborn's. The baby had a confused expression, almost like saying "Where am I?", "Who's this woman?". The lady could even swear that the baby blurted out a "Huh?".

But still, despite all the weird features she had noticed in the baby, he was her child, and she was really happy to have him in her arms.

The lady smiled and started tearing up.

"I-I don't even know what to say..."

She looked at all her servants, and the doctor who had accompanied the childbirth and said:

"Thank you so much. All of you. This boy is here, not just because of me, not just because of his father, but also because of everyone who helped during his birth. Thank you, again."

A round of applause was followed by the lady's speech. It was rather impressive that someone could give such a speech after giving birth to a child, but Lady Frida Von Neumann was very well-known for her pretty diplomatic behavior.

After that, the doctor decided to talk.

"No need to thank me, Lady Von Neumann. It is my job. Your little boy was pretty well-behaved. He did not cry at all during the whole process."

The lady frowned.

""He did not cry at all"? How?! Should babies not cry after their birth?!" she asked, seemingly apprehensive.

The doctor nodded.

"Yes, yes. But in some rare cases, for some reason, they don't cry and they still show no health problems," he explained.

The lady's expression seemed to be more relieved after the doctor's explanation.

"Thank you so much, Dr. Richter! I'll make sure to give you a rather lavish reward for your great job," she said after a sign.

The doctor bowed.

"Thank you very much," he said.

The lady smiled, and looked at the baby, who was trying to reach out to her, like he wanted something.

Soon, the lady seemed to remember something. "Oh, I almost forgot. Where's Elias? Did he not want to see his son's birth?" she asked.

The humble looking woman, immediately looked over at the lady. "Mr. Hügel?" she asked before sighing. "I tried to convince him, but there is no way he wanted to see your childbirth."

The lady's expression saddened before she sighed.

"Very well, there is no problem," she said.

In order to lighten the mood, a younger servant decided to step up. "So, what is going to be young master's name?"

After that question, the lady looked at Lukas as a smile immediately appeared across her face. "Lukas. His name is going to be Lukas."

Dr. Richter smiled. "That is a pretty good name. It suits him good," he said while nodding his head.

The lady nodded before looking back at Lukas. She had already noticed that Lukas was a weird child. He had a different look from all the other newborns and babies she had ever seen. It somehow seemed... more mature, wiser. She couldn't explain it herself very well, but she was very curious about what was going on in his head.

POV LUKAS

Austria, August 17th 1788

10:06 PM

A humble looking woman held a baby. She had just finished cleaning up all the blood from him.

'What's this?! So cold! Hey! Miss! Cover me with that clo... Yes, like that, much better... I never felt this sensation before. How did I even know she had to cover me to relieve it? No idea!'

The humble looking woman started mumbling something that Lukas couldn't understand. He looked curiously at her.

'What the fuck? What's that noise that woman is making?! And by the way, what is this place?! There's so much light and noise... I liked it much better before. That warm, dark place.'

Lukas was handed to a very charming lady, who was lying on a bed.

'Well, apparently that place was... inside her?

...What?! Stop making those noises, lady! It's annoying!'

The lady started looking at him with a very happy smile. He was watching him thoroughly.

'Stop it, Miss. It's embarrassing.'

While watching the lady, who was holding him, with a curious expression, he looked at the window behind her.

'What?! What's that?! Is it falling from... up there?!' Lukas wondered after noticing the rain falling

He even blurted out a "Huh?" which made the lady start staring curiously at him, looking intrigued.

'What is it? You guys keep mumbling nonsense stuff and I can't even blurt out a sound that makes sense?'

The lady started mumbling randomly again, and, after that, looked at all the people behind Lukas and kept mumbling.

'There she goes again, holy sh-'

As Lukas was about to start complaining about that mumbling again, a round of applause echoed through the whole room, which bothered Lukas quite a lot, however, nobody seemed to notice it, or even care.

'Hey! What's that?! These people are mad!'

Now, a man with black hair and a black moustach has also started mumbling.

'Now it's this dude! They seem really engaged with it! I wonder what's that?'

Lukas made a short break while trying to come up with an idea.

'Oh, of course! A way of communication! So obvious! I could be happier to figure it out if I wasn't so tired.'

After a bit more mumbling, the man wearing the monocle lowered his upper body with his right arm on his chest. It was obviously a bow, but Lukas had no idea.

'Ok, these people are crazy. Gotta get out of here now. Hey, lady, let me go."

Lukas saw a necklace, which the woman was wearing, and, for some reason, he thought she would let him go if he took it off her, so he stretched his arms to try to take the necklace, which was, obviously, useless.

After some more mumbling, which Lukas has now been trying to follow along with, since he had figured out it was a way of communication, he managed to pick up his first word.

"Lukas. Zain nama izt Lukas."

'Ok, I guess I picked something up... Lukas. Lukas, huh? What's that? No idea! But that's something! ...I guess.'

Author's notes:

Ok, this is it for now. I know this chapter was pretty short, but I just wanted to show you Lukas's birth, and the way he thinks. Don't worry, the chapters are gonna be longer. This is my first novel, so I hope you enjoy.
