Chapter 41 Back Home

As soon as we were leaving the building, I glanced at the box truck, went behind it, and opened it up. Inside were hundreds of green boxes of weapons and many packs of ammunition. I could see that Paige was doing the task I assigned her, searching the corpses for weapons, all to instill a strong will in her. Now she's part of the Order; I don't have time for weak people. Those with weak minds are only a burden in decision-making. If I'm in danger and rely on someone, it must be someone I trust.

I then turned my attention back to the boxes, putting most of them into storage and leaving a few scattered here and there to avoid arousing too much suspicion.

Soon, I noticed some inconsistency with the size of the truck and the size of the trailer; it didn't make sense. There must be a false bottom.

I walked to the back of the truck and touched the cold metal wall separating the cargo from the truck, putting my ear close to the wall. On the other side, I could hear muffled voices from what I believed to be a tiny compartment.

At that moment, I shouted, "Paige, come here!"

Seconds later, Paige entered in her assassin attire and asked, "What's wrong? Why did you call me?" Paige said, her outfit concealing her face.

"It seems there's something on the other side of this wall, possibly people," I said in the voice of Omen.

Paige looked surprised, or at least what could be seen of her face, and then asked, "How do we get them out of there?" I immediately replied, "They must be transporting these people across the border. There must be a lever or a button to open it. I want you to look inside the cabin."

"Okay," Paige nodded before jumping out of the truck and heading to the driver's cabin.

After a few seconds, I heard a shout, "Found it!" and then a door, which if you didn't look closely, you'd miss, opened. Inside were various people: men, children, women, and the elderly.

They looked at me with frightened eyes, scared of the person who appeared in front of them. Paige then arrived behind them and looked at me as she was about to speak.

"Shhh," I looked at her, putting my fingers to my lips, signaling her not to say a word.

I then brought all of them, who were frightened, to the factory floor and made them kneel.

"What are you doing in this truck?" I asked them, which startled them. But at that moment, a 16-year-old boy volunteered to speak, even though he didn't understand what I was saying.

"They let us enter the country, it was an agreement we made," he said in Spanish. Although I didn't know much of the language, in my past life, I was a Brazilian man, and the languages were still quite similar. So, I understood.

I then turned my back to them and walked towards the exit, signaling for Paige to follow me.

"Wait... could you tell us your name, please?" the boy asked.

I stopped in my tracks, turned my face in the direction of the boy who asked, and said, "OMEN," then exited the scene (I'm cringing so hard).

After a distance, Paige, who had been following me closely, asked, "Is this right? Are you sure we should just let them go? They're illegal immigrants; we could report them to the authorities." Paige asked anxiously.

"Paige, we're assassins. We're not babysitters, let alone vigilantes. Their fate is their own concern. It's not up to us to decide for them. We can only decide the fate of our targets, nothing more, nothing less," I said as I looked at a blood-stained feather in my hands.

While we were in the building, gathering Paige's equipment and talking to each other:

"Paige, tomorrow I'm going to talk to your mom about college. What do you think? Or do you want to talk to her yourself?"

At that moment, Paige stopped her hands and said, "Why me or you? We should do it together since it was a decision we both made. I believe if we both speak, the chances of them accepting are higher."

"You're right. I really can't understand your mom. She left you at the Coopers', and she didn't call once to see how you were. Is that really a mother?" I expressed my thoughts to Paige, who chuckled dryly and said, "To her, it's a blessing that I'm not around. It seemed like she carried the weight of the world when she was with me. Now that I'm gone, even if temporarily, she feels relieved."

I laughed at the situation and said, "Sometimes I feel grateful for not having known my parents, but still, I couldn't imagine my life without the Coopers. At this point, you're the real unlucky one."

And Paige continued, "Watching how your family treats Sheldon, who has so many quirks, in the best possible way, I envy Sheldon's relationship with your family. As for mine, I feel they have both aversion and fear at the same time."

I was speechless at Paige's comment. In the original, we knew there was some internal strife in her family, and it was evident by her sister's attitude towards her that the internal situation was not good. But apparently, the waters run deeper than I imagined.

"It doesn't matter anymore. You'll be with me most of the time from now on, for better or for worse."

At that moment, a very subtle smile could be seen on Paige, and she spoke with an infectious smile.

"You're right. For better or for worse, we'll be together," she said with a joy that didn't match the phrase that had been spoken.

I sighed and continued gathering the equipment, seeing that I didn't speak anymore, Paige gathered the rest.

As soon as we left, we got into a Ford F100 that we rented with a fake identity Paige created. As we headed home, I thought of something and said to Paige, who was driving, "Change direction, let's go to Dallas. I'm going to get something that's mine." And I received a nod and the car turned back in the direction it came from.

We arrived in a city in front of a building illuminated with the McLaren logo written on it. Getting out of the car and telling Paige to wait for me in the car, I entered the dealership and went to the counter.

"Hello, sir, how can I help you?" the attendant said to Connor.

"Hello, I've come to pick up a vehicle that's in my name."

At that moment, the attendant gave me a strange look and asked suspiciously, "What's your name, sir?"

"You can call me Connor, Connor Kenway," I said as I handed over an identification document to the attendant.

"Connor? The millionaire who bought one of our newly manufactured cars, right?" He said as he looked at the ID and asked someone to verify if it was the right one in the dealership's system.

True to being a renowned dealership, the identification process was very smooth and without any hassle from the attendant who served me.

"So, Mr. Connor, sir, do you have anyone responsible with you to pick up the car?"

Seeing the situation that I already expected to happen, I said, "No, I represent myself. I'm a self-made millionaire; I don't need someone to tell me what to do and what not to do."

I spoke arrogantly in my tone; in situations like this, it's better to show dignity.

"I'm sorry, sir, I didn't mean to offend you, but those are the company's rules, and there's nothing I can do as the manager of this branch," he said hastily to me.

He ended up being the branch manager, so things became easier for me.

"You're the manager, then, right?" He nodded, and I continued, "so you must know how things work around here," I said as I made the money sign with my hands.

He widened his eyes, stood up, looked around before closing the door and sitting down, and said, "Please continue, Mr. Kenway," he said very politely. I then made my proposal, "30,000.00, and you follow the company's procedures."

"40,000.00, I don't mind doing the standard procedure of our company," he countered with his offer, and then I said, "35,000.00, and we don't talk about this anymore!" I said as I raised my hand for a handshake, which he looked at for a few seconds and shook hands while saying cheerfully, "Done, a pleasure doing business with you, Mr. Kenway." Initially, when the boy said we could negotiate, I intended to leave with a value of 10k, but I ended up profiting.

I followed the manager to the counter where we met, and he asked me to wait.

After a few moments, he arrived with something in his hand and some papers.

"Alright, Mr. Kenway, all you need to do is sign some paperwork, and the car will be yours," the sound of a pen writing on paper was heard.

Seeing that I had finished signing, the manager spoke as he handed me a small package containing a key, "There you go, Mr. Kenway, your key, and please follow me to your vehicle."

Arriving at the garage at the back of the dealership, I saw numerous cars in rows, all covered by a black cover, until we reached one particularly lowered compared to the others.

"Here you go, Mr. Kenway, if you'd like to do the honors," I then walked to the car covered with the protective cover and removed it.

I caught a glimpse of one of the most beautiful machines of modern times: a Metallic Black McLaren F1. Its seats were made of entirely beige leather. Unlike other cars, there were three seats in front, with the driver's seat in the middle, and behind there was still space for three more people. One of the most beautiful things I've ever seen.

Seeing my astonishment, the manager said softly, "So, Mr. Kenway, did you like it?"

"Of course," I said as I entered the passenger seat and moved to the middle. It was strange for me to have driven all the cars on the left and suddenly be in the middle, but I soon got used to it.

Vroom Vroom

As soon as I turned on the engine, the sound reverberated on the walls of the garage, just like the manager who was excited to see that machine come to life for the first time.

And then I drove out of the garage from the back of the dealership and parked next to the Ford car that was parked there.

Paige, who had been waiting until then, looked curiously at the uniquely shaped car that appeared next to hers. Realizing who it was, Paige wasn't dumb; she could connect the dots.

Paige got out of the Ford car and got into the McLaren.

"Cool car, is this what you wanted to pick up?" Paige asked, curious about the minimalist luxury of the car.

"Of course, it's my baby," I said with genuine joy in my voice, receiving an eye roll from Paige, and she asked, pointing to the Ford, "and this car?" "They'll come to get it. It's their town; sooner or later, they'll find out their car parked in front of the dealership," and then I shifted into first gear and accelerated.

Vroom Vroom

On the road, you could see a car speeding in a certain direction.

Arriving in Galveston, Connor went straight to a warehouse he owned to store things.

At the Cooper's house, the house was all dark, making it easy for Paige and Connor to enter the garage.

As soon as they both lay down, Paige said, "Connor... today was fun and horrible at the same time. Do we really have to do this?" Paige asked, looking at Connor's face, which until then had been closed.

"Maybe yes, maybe no. All I know is that someone needs to do it," Connor opened his eyes and looked at the girl who was close to him.

"Now go to sleep, or we won't be able to wake up for breakfast," I said as I closed my eyes and tried to go back to sleep.

"Uh-huh," grumbled Paige as she turned her back to Connor to sleep.
