Starred Up

Deen, a seven year old boy, arrives in Korea with his mother Mia. With a strong determination to raise her son properly, Mia ensures Deen lacks no love in his life. In her spare time, Mia is a huge fangirl of the Korean boy group, TNT. But in an unexpected twist of fate, the mother-son duo end up being the neighbors of D3, another legendary boy group, which happens to be TNT's biggest rival. D3 consists of the short tempered Taewon, gentle Joon Jae and the goofy Jan. On top of that, Mia is hired as the personal designer for TNT, which consists of the charismatic leader Soo-Yon and the playboy maknae Cheng. Despite the rocky start, Mia and her son grow closer to all the members of both the groups. With time, the members realize they have fallen in love with the same woman, disrupting each group's dynamics. Furthermore, the origins of the hostility between the two groups resurface, making everyone involved question the decision they made a decade ago. As secrets unfold, the members vie for Mia's affections, Deen observes that she has eyes only for one of them. But which one of them will she choose? Deen-A Voice

I looked at her, confused. 'But you never even met them,' I said.

'I don't need to meet them,' she replied. 'Their songs were enough.'

'But you didn't know the meaning of those words! How did they give you courage?'

Mee thought for a while. 'I guess,' she said after a while. 'It was the voice.'

She drifted off, deep in thoughts. It was irritating. I didn't understand a word she said. What voice? What words? Which decision did she make?

'Mee,' I shook her. Mee came out of her trance.

'Oh you're done with dinner,' she said. 'Let's go and get your chocolate.'

Mee locked the door tightly. 'Let's go,' she said, holding my hand. It was chilly outside. Mee made me wear three layers of clothes and wrapped my head with a muffler. She was paranoid about me falling sick.

We walked towards the nearest convenience store. 'It should be around here,' Mee said as she checked the map on her phone. 'Just around the corner.'

Yep, there it was. A 24/7 convenience store. It didn't look that different from the super stores we had back in our country. Just smaller. Otherwise the arrangements of the aisles were very similar. I trotted over to the candies section. There sure were quite a lot of varieties. Some candy bars had Kpop idols' pictures on them (I avoided those in case if Mee ended up preserving the packets). Mee on the other hand was looking at the magazine section. Probably checking out her idols. I picked up a Cadbury bar and went over to her.

'Mee, I want this one,' I said as I handed her the bar. Mee smiled, put the magazine under her arm and we headed towards the counter. Suddenly, Mee bumped into a tall man.

'Oops, I am so sorry,' Mee said in English. 'I mean I am so sorry,' she repeated in Korean.

'It's okay,' the man said in English. Strangely, he was wearing a white nose mask.

Oh,' Mee said in surprise. 'You speak English?'

The man nodded but did not elaborate. Mee frowned. 'You look really familiar,' she said. Suddenly the man looked uncomfortable. His phone rang. Relief ran over his face as he attended the call.

'I was about to call you,' the man said on the phone as he strolled away.

Mee kept on staring at the man's back. I was getting restless. 'Mee,' I said, shaking her hand. 'Let's go home.'

'Oh yeah,' she said, taking her eyes off the man. 'Let's go.'
