Avery was about to open the door of her car when she saw the flat tire. She cussed and pushed the key into her pocket and started walking down the road.
''Detective Sandas…'' Kai pulled over and rolled down his window. ''Get in!'' He said.
Avery looked at him suspiciously and replied. ''I will take the bus to work. You don't have to bother yourself, Prosecutor Oak.''
Kai sighed and pulled over. He got down from the car and walked to her. ''Detective Sandas, do you know that you are being watched right now?''
''What?'' Avery was about to turn and Kai held her head.
''Don't turn around. Come with me.'' He said and pulled her to the car and Avery got in.
''How did you know I was being followed?'' Avery asked.
Kai opened his car's board and took out some photos and gave them to Avery. They were photos of her entering the Prime Minister's house and coming out of there.
''Were you following me?'' Avery asked.
''No! I got a call from someone who is looking into this case. A reporter. He is the one who sent these to me and told me he saw you going in to meet with the Prime Minister.''
Avery threw the photos back at Kai. ''I have nothing to say to you, Prosecutor Oak.'' Avery said.
''Detective Sandas, this case isn't just an ordinary case and I hope you do understand that. If these photos come to the open, people are going to think that you are working for the Minister.''
Avery sighed. She clenched her hands tightly and looked outside the car. 'Stop the car!''
''Why? Are you angry?'' Kai asked.
''I want to get something from the shop there…'' Avery said and Kai pulled over. Avery got down and went towards the shop.
Kai opened his door to go after her and his phone started ringing. He picked it up. ''Hello. What? Investigator Jun, make sure you stall the Chief Prosecutor for time. I will be there soon.'' Kai said and hung up.
He got out of the car and ran into the shop and saw Avery paying for the chocolate she bought.
''Detective Sandas, we don't have time…'' Kai said and pulled her out of the shop and they went towards the car.
''Did something happen?'' Avery asked.
''The Minister of Justice and special forces has asked for Fiona to be moved and interrogated by the Special Forces Team. We need to stop them. Once they take her there, we won't be able to interrogate her and find out the truth.'' Kai said as she sped out of the place.
Avery opened the chocolate bar and took a bite. She sighed and looked in front of her and mumbled. ''What is it going to change?''
….
Hans Island Prosecutor's Office.
Kai got down from the car and ran inside leaving Avery. She also got down and locked the car and took the key and walked up the staircase pavement.
Avery saw Denis, the special assistant to the Prime Minister making a call. When he saw Avery, he looked at her and bowed but Avery ignored him and walked inside.
''Detective Sandas just arrived in the same car with Prosecutor Oak. I am going to meet with the Chief of the Special Prosecutors' Team.'' Denis said and hung up. He turned and went inside the building.
Avery stood by the door listening to the back and forth going on between Prosecutor Oak and the Chief Prosecutor.
''No! If you let them take the suspect away, I am going to write an appeal to the supreme court. Chief, you don't want me to go to that extent, do you?'' Prosecutor Oak threatened.
''Prosecutor Oak, this is beyond me. This request was signed by your grandfather, the supreme court judge.'' The Chief said.
''What?'' Prosecutor Oak snatched the document from the Chief and looked at it. He became furious and pointed his hand at the Chief.
''This is not valid until I hear it from the horse's own mouth. I am not releasing the key to the holding room.'' Kai said.
''Kai!'' A stern voice called from the door and Prosecutor Oak turned. A highly revered man with two bodyguards by his side walked in. He threw a glance at Avery before looking at Kai.
This is Chief Justice Damien Oak, the Supreme Chief Justice of Xing City and Prosecutor Oak's grandfather. When he entered, Denis was with him.
Avery looked at them and shifted her gaze to Prosecutor Oak.
''Chief Justice!'' Prosecutor Oak and the others bowed.
''I am the one who signed the release papers.'' Justice Oak said as he looked at Kai with a soft gaze.
''But…''
''I haven't seen you in a long time. Are you going to argue with me in front of all these people?'' Justice Oak asked.
''Everyone, excuse them!'' The Chief Prosecutor said and everyone started going out. Avery looked at them and turned to go and Prosecutor Oak called her.
''Detective Sandas…''
He walked up to her and put a key inside Avery's pocket and whispered to her. ''Go and find investigator Jun. He will take you to where Fiona is. Before I come, I need you to find all the answers that you can get from her. If she leaves here, she is going to die and we will never find the answers to our questions.''
Avery looked at Prosecutor Oak and nodded her head. Prosecutor Oak stepped aside and Avery bowed before leaving.
Prosecutor Oak closed the door and turned to face his grandfather.
''What kind of relationship do you have with that detective?'' Chief Justice Oak asked as he sat on the couch in the office.
''A working relationship. Grandpa, why did you sign such a request? You know the real reason why they want to take the suspect away.'' Kai asked.
''So, you do know that and still want to get entangled in this? Kai, this is a high profile case. The confession from that woman will affect a lot of people. Powerful people and you the prosecutor in charge of that case will face off a lot of powerful people.''
''That woman knows about what happened to Anita.''
''I have being following the case closely and I can tell you that, that woman is using you. She probably doesn't know anything about Anita, but she sees how you are still hanged up over the case, that is why she is using it to get you to be on her side.'' Justice Oak said.
''No! That is not true.'' Kai refused to believe what his grandfather was telling him.
…..
Avery followed investigator Jun inside the special cell. She opened the door and entered. Investigator Jun stood outside the door with the other police officer while Avery went inside alone.
Avery sat across Fiona and they looked at each other. Fiona was eating when Avery entered.
''You seem to be eating well for someone who stole $50 billion dollars and almost $6 billion worth of jewelry from the Prime Minister.'' Avery said sarcastically.
''I knew you would find out. What did the Minister give you? Did he promise to pay you if you are able to get me to reveal the secret code to the safe and bank accounts?'' Fiona sighed and chuckled.
''What to do? I am not going to tell you. You should send the money back to them, Avery. Even if I die, the Prime Minister will not get that money. Do you know why? Because they don't belong to him.''
''They don't belong to you either. Why did you use my name? Tell me, did I wrong you in my past life? Why do I feel that I am the one being targeted and not those powerful people?'' Avery asked.
''Do you know why thieves are made guardians of money?'' Fiona laughed. 'Because a thief will never steal money kept in their care.''
''You are not answering my question. Why me? What is your deal with me?'' Avery banged her fist on the table.
''I like you! I chose you because I like you.'' Fiona sighed. ''Did you take the money?'' She asked.
''No! What kind of person do you take me for?''
''I knew it! I picked the right person.'' Fiona chuckled.
''What?''
''Avery, that money belongs to us. Do you remember that the land on which our orphanage was built in was sold?'' Fiona asked.
''What has that got to do with the money?'' Avery asked impatiently.
''Think about it, Avery. You are smart. Did you think the fire was really an accident? That land was worth $25 billion at that time because they found precious minerals on the land.''
''The Prime Minister was a constructor at that time. He wanted to buy the land, but Sister Markell didn't agree. These were her words. ''The land is what these children are going to use to start their lives.'', that is what she said. But a week later, she died in an accident and the orphanage caught fire. All of us were relocated and… you were taken away.''
''This… is this true?''
''You can choose to believe me or not but the Prime Minister ended up taking the land for free and today, that land is worth $250 billion dollars because of the amount of mineral resources in it. The Prime Minister promised to give you a few billions in exchange for the money I kept in your name in the international bank, right?''
''How did you know that?''
''That is the kind of person he is. He will give you that money and then send his men to come after you. That man wouldn't even give you $1 million dollars for you but he promised to give you a couple billions?'' Fiona chuckled.
