Chapter 20

"Here you go."

"Ah, thank you."

Upon handing Samuel a steaming cup of black coffee, Genevieve walked over and plopped down on a couch in her living room. She folded her legs and leaned her back against an armrest of the sofa, which made her face him. He was sitting on one end of the three-seater, and she was on the other.

"You know-"

Samuel moved the cup away from his lips and held it between his palms. The beverage was way too hot right now, so he thought of letting it cool down instead of taking a scalding gulp and burning his taste buds.

"You scared me. I thought you were in trouble or something. I mean... you are, but I thought it might be a matter of life and death."

Genevieve rolled her eyes.

"Gee, thank you for rubbing the suspension in my face." She mused playfully, but her face remained impassive. The sole reason behind calling Samuel over was echoing in her mind, and she waited for a little while before speaking her mind.
