Chapter 220. Experiment (Part2)

Steve was silent for a moment before looking at the doctor in front of him and said.

"Thanks, I think..."

Dr Erskine smiled. He didn't expect Steve to fully understand his thoughts. What he said tonight wasn't so much for Steve but for his own inner catharsis. Reaching out, he pointed to the suitcase and motioned for Steve to bring the glasses over. He opened the bottle and poured some into both glasses.

Taking a glass of brandy for himself, Dr Erskine pointed to Steve's chest, "Whatever happens tomorrow, you must promise me one thing. That you will stay who you are. Not a perfect soldier, but a good man."

Steve smiled. Maybe physically, he couldn't compare with Dio or any soldier in the army, but he had the confidence to follow his heart and be a good person.

Holding up the glass in his hand, he motioned to Dr Erskine, "To the little guys."

Seeing this, Dr Erskine toasts his glass with a smile. However, just as Steve was about to drink it, he suddenly took the glass away.

"No, no, wait, wait. No, you have a procedure tomorrow. No fluids."

Steve's expression was somewhat regretful when he couldn't have a drink. He shrugged and looked at the glass in the Doctor's hand helplessly, "All right, we'll drink it after."

"Why wait until later?" However, Dr Abraham Erskine did not feel the slightest bit of empathy for Steve's feelings, mixing the two glasses together and shaking his glass, "I don't have procedure tomorrow. Drink it after? I drink it now."

Having said that, he didn't wait for Steve's reaction and simply downed the entire glass of brandy.

...

Poland, Nazi base.

"All right."

Placing the last piece of skin in his hand over the face of the transformed soldier in front of him, Dr Zola pushed back and looked around at his result with a satisfied expression on his face.

"Turn on the lights."

Taking out sunglasses and putting them on, Dr Zola immediately turned his head and gave a command to the soldiers behind him. Hearing Dr Zola's command, the soldier pressed the switch in his hand without hesitation, and in the next second, a blinding light flashed towards the transformed soldier. These headlights made by Dr Zola had an intense ultraviolet effect.

Under normal circumstances, under the irradiation of such high-intensity ultraviolet light, the transformed soldiers who were injected with vampire blood would have instantly turned into charcoal. However, the soldier in front of him didn't appear to be smouldering despite the intense light shining on him, although he still looked a little uncomfortable.

"It worked!"

Seeing this scene, a look of excitement spread across Dr Zola's face.

"It seems that your proposal has been a success, Dr Zola."

Just then, Johann Schmidt, who had been informed of the results of the experiment, arrived in the laboratory.

"Yes, Sir. My idea was that this special layer of skin would perfectly shield the test subjects from the sun's rays, rendering them immune to the sun's rays. By doing so, these transformed soldiers injected with vampire blood would be an unbeatable group of super soldiers."

"This is good news." Looking up, gazing at the transformed soldier in front of him, Schmidt didn't skimp on his praise. However, after saying that, he turned the conversation around, "It just so happens that I need to use him to go on an important mission for me."

As she spoke, Schmidt took out the photo in his arms and handed it to Dr Zola.

"This is?"

Reaching out and taking the photo handed to him by Schmidt, Dr Zola looked at the familiar face. There was a look of surprise on his face, "Abraham, is it?" Looking at the photograph in his hand, a thought occurred to Dr Zola.

"There is no mistake, Dr Zola. According to the information I have gathered, the Super Soldier Serum will once again be used in New York. His serum is the Allies' only defence against this power we now possess. If we take it away from them, then our victory is assured."

"So, send in the transformed soldiers. I hope there will be no failures in this mission."

"I understand."

In the face of Schmidt's order, Dr Zola nodded without hesitation.

...

"I know this neighbourhood..."

Early the next morning, Steve got into a car prepared by the army. Agent Carter accompanied him to the site of the experiment. They needed to return to New York for the transformation experiment because the whole procedure required a lot of electricity, and the Philadelphia grid was clearly not up to the task.

Steve had been trying hard to keep his emotions upbeat throughout the journey. The conversation with Dr Erskine had given him an idea of the purpose of the experiment. He had actually been apprehensive about the serum injection and even worried that the experiment might fail.

Inside the car, Agent Carter looked at Steve with a helpless expression. She actually knew how Steve felt. None of them could guarantee the outcome of the experiment; even Dr Erskine had concerns.

As the vehicle moved forward, Steve kept pointing his finger at the window and spoke to Agent Carter, "I got beat up in that alley … and the parking lot … and behind that diner..."

Carter chuckled and remained silent for a moment but decided to ask, "Did you have something against running away?"

Steve shook his head and answered very seriously, "You start running; they'll never let you stop. You stand up, you push back. They can't say no forever, right? "

Steve's words seemed to remind Agent Carter of her experience. She couldn't help but curl the corners of her mouth, "I know a little of what that's like, to have every door shut in your face." Agent Carter was a strong woman, and she felt that she was no less capable than any of her male colleagues. Unfortunately, discrimination was still prevalent in this era, and people would always presume that women were better suited for clerical work, not fighting.

"I just don't know why you would want to join the army?" Steve thought about it and couldn't help but open his mouth, "If you were a beautiful dame... or a... woman. An agent. Not a dame. You are beautiful, but..." It was clear that, although Steve tried hard to be polite, he was only getting worse. Agent Carter turned her head to Steve, who was already somewhat frazzled. She shook her head helplessly.

"You have no idea how to talk to women, do you?"

In response, Steve bitterly smiled and somewhat self-deprecatingly replied, "I think this is the longest conversation I've had with one." There was a flicker of joy in Carter's eyes, but it was well hidden as she turned her head away slightly, not wanting Steve to see the smile on her face.

Over this period of time, Steve's behaviour had charmed the female agent. Unlike the instantly recognisable impeccable, and powerful Dio, Steve's appeal to Agent Carter was instead more impactful. He was physically weak but always uncompromisingly resolute in his training.

Steve still kept his head down and didn't notice Carter's expression. He calmly talked about his past, "Women aren't exactly lining up to dance with a guy they might step on."
