Chapter 8: The Best Surprise

"Where are we going?" I asked when I noticed the car was not going back to the airport or a hotel. "It's a surprise." Jimin said, cheekily. I stared at him, scrutinizing his mannerisms. In fact, all the boys seemed to know what we were doing and I obviously didn't. "You guys are up to something." I declared. "Whatever made you think that?" Jin asked, pretending to be innocent. "I know all of you too well." I said with a huff, acting like I was mad.

"Well, until we arrive where we are going, let's just enjoy the ride." Namjoon stated, shrugging. "Fine..." I said, although I was secretly happy with their meddling and had grown used to it. It was quiet for some time while everyone was looking out the windows, enjoying the California scenery and shaking the sad thoughts away after today's cemetery visit.

Jungkook started singing, "amugeotdo saeggakhaji ma...neon amu maldo kkeonaejido ma." Everyone continued with their parts. I smiled and finally joined Kookie and Tae when it got to the chorus. "Butterfly, like a butterfly. Machi butterfly, bu butterfly cheoreom" I sang with a big grin. The car was suddenly silent. "What?" I asked. "Aish, Fay!" "You're singing!" "Noona!" All the boys started talking in excitement at the same time. "I guess Fay is transforming, she's our butterfly." Yoongi said, unexpectedly. "Aww man..." I whined, hiding my face in my hands from the sudden blush that crept up. I couldn't handle the sudden embarrassment and random cuteness from Yoongi.

The rest of the ride was filled with more singing and playing road trip games. It was over an hour later when I started recognizing the landscape around us. The car pulled into the parking lot of a small and quiet beach. We had arrived at the Santa Maria boardwalk. I slowly got out of the car and walked to a viewpoint, the boys following behind me. "How?" I forced out as my breath hitched in my throat. I whirled around, staring at them for an answer.

"I asked your dad where your favorite beach was before we left the cemetery." Namjoon said. I couldn't help it, I was crying again. "This was the beach my mother would take me to. It was her favorite as well. I-I haven't been here since before she got sick." I sobbed, tears running rivets down my cheeks. Jin came up behind me, hugging me to him. "Do you like the surprise?" He asked, gently. I could only nod in response. Jin pulled away only to be replaced by Taehyung taking my hand. "Let's walk." He said. "Okay." I answered, taking a shaky breathe to calm my crying.

I took off my flip flops before stepping into the warm sand and walking toward the tide. Tae still had ahold of my hand and the other boys were surrounding me. We walked along the edge of the water and I breathed in the salty air and listened to the crash of the waves. I felt like I could hear my mom singing on the wind. I paused, putting a foot in the water. It was really cold, but I didn't mind. "Namjoon?" I asked, turning around to look at him. "Hmm?" He responded. "Thank you." I said. He gave a big dimpled grin. All the boys were looking at me with their sweet smiles.

We walked in the sand, dodging waves and enjoying the peacefulness as it slowly became dark. "Let's have a bonfire." Yoongi said. "We brought everything needed for one." Jin confirmed. He and Yoongi went back to the car to get chairs, wood, s'mores ingredients, and Jin also grabbed his guitar. "Jin, you play guitar?" I asked. "Yeah, I'm full of surprises." He said, giving his worldwide handsome grin. I smiled back as Tae, Chim, and I helped Jin and Yoongi set the chairs out. Namjoon, Hoseok, and Jungkook were working on getting the fire started.

Once the fire was going we all sat down in a circle around the flame. "Time for S'mores!" Hobi shouted, grabbing the graham crackers, chocolate, and marshmallows. "Yes!" I exclaimed, grabbing the roasting sticks. Soon we were all laughing and roasting marshmallows, making fun of each other's preferences. "How could you burn that poor marshmallow?!" I said, wrinkling my nose at Jimin as he let his burst into flames. "Your's is barely charred!" Jimin teased back.

A little while later we were all satisfied and maybe a little sticky with marshmallow goo when I got an idea. I wanted to show the boys how much I appreciated them. "Hey Jin, Kookie." I called. "Let's talk for a minute." We whispered together about my plan and then sat back down as Jin started playing a few chords on his guitar.
