"I am Devito. A scientist."
A scientist? That termed really intrigued Aaron. It was a commonly used term on earth. But this was the first time he had heard it in this world.
"A scientist? " Aaron asked of Devito. Even wanted to know what the man thought of himself. Was it same as Aaron was thinking.
"Yes. A scientist. I study and research on scientific theories." Devito replied. You could he was anxious and excited to be sitting with Aaron.
"Are you a mage? " Aaron asked.
"No. I am not. But my cousin was. I started having an interest in science after reading some of his books. "
"He passed away due to illness, but my interest remained. "
"I see. What was that you were arguing at the gates of the mage Association today? " asked Aaron.
"Oh. You saw that. " Devito relied with a look of shame on his face.
"I was just trying to have a look at the mage system artifact. I heard it can fetch information from a long distance."
"It has had my curiosity for a long while. But the mages haven't allowed me too look at it. This wasn't the first time I have tried. "
You had to give one thing to Devito though. He was honest. He clearly told that he was refused a lot of times without having any shame.
His only shame was that the mge who was at least willing to talk to him had seen him like that.
"The thing is, I have spent most of my life studying science. After my cousin passed away, I had difficulties finding new books. And the books I could find cost me a lot. But I still couldn't just not buy them."
"To be honest, mages see science as a means to help their magic. But for me, science is magic. "
"I see. I can't help you see the artifact. But if you are interested, I could tell you about it. And I can also tell you a little of the theory behind it. "
"Thank you! You don't know how much that means to me. "
Aaron found the guy interesting. He definitely looked like someone completely dedicated to science. He reminded him of some people his university who were the crazy about science. How they spent all their time being cooped up in a laboratory.
Aaron told him about the tablet he had seen at the mage association in Blossoms city. He told him about how it worked in words similar to what Park said about it.
He didn't talk about his own conjuction on the topic.
"That's just a fabulous technique. Just imagine the possibilities of the system. But the mages hog over the whole thing. "
He then realized he was sitting with a mage.
"Sorry. I didnt mean that. I am truly sorry."
He was afraid Aaron might leave hearing him berating the mages. He might even get punished for it.
"I will agree with you there. The system is indeed amazing. As for hogging, there is considerable cost associated with it you know. Do you think normal people could pay for it? "
Although Aaron didn't have deep attachment with the mage association here, he was still a mage. He didn't want to hear bad things about himself.
"Anyway Mr. Devito. It was nice meeting you. Hope your curiosity was satisfied. "
"Thank you Sir Mage. I seriously didnt mean to disrespect the mages earlier. It's just I feel so helpless sometimes."
"I do thank you from the bottom of my heart though for the time you spent on enlighting me. "
Aaron got up to leave.
Devito was however not satisfied. This was the first time a mage had shown interest in him after his cousin passed away. This was an opportunity for him to learn something. Maybe he could even get some books out of it. The mages had space rings right. He must be carrying some on him.
He needed a chance. He thought about it for a while and then came to a decision. He had to impress Aaron enough.
"Excuse me Sir mage. " He called Aaron from behind.
Aaron stopped and turned around.
"I have a small request to make of you if you don't mind."
"You can make your request. As to whether or not I can fulfill it or do I wish to fulfill it, that's another issue."
"Thank you for hearing me out. "
When Devito wasn't talking about science, he was much more polite and respectful. It looked like he forgot himself in his enthusiasm.
"I wonder if Sir has some time tomorrow morning. If you have, can you please visit my house? "
"I tinker with science and have come up with some small achievements."
"Although they are nearly not enough to compare to mage artifacts, it would be an honor for me if Sir could see them and comment on them. "
Devito knew he surely had some achivements in that field. He had worked a lot over the years. Even his cousin was amazed by some of his theories and works.
He knew mages were curious by nature. If he could gain his curiosity, the mage might decide to help Devito out.
Aaron thought about it. He understood what Devito wanted. He wanted to show his capabilities to Aaron. As for what he wanted out of it, Aaron could only make guesses.
He had initially thought of living the city in the morning after having a night's rest. But this Devito fellow sure had him intrigued a little.
Aaron decided to have a look what the fellow had to show. He could always leave if it wasn't worth it. And even if he found it interesting, he wasn't bound to help the man.
If it was a minor thing, he might consider it. But it concerned something big, he surely would get involved.
" I do hope you aren't wasting my time. " Aaron replied in a stern voice. He wanted to make sure the man didnt plan on wasting his time.
"Its my life's work Sir mage. I am sure it will atleast interest you a little. "
Aaron liked the confidence of the man atleast. If he had tried to be too humble, he may not have actually agreed with him.
"Okay. Be here in the morning. I will have a look. "
Devito thanked him again.
"I want you to know something though. Having a look doesn't mean I am entitled to help you. " Aaron didn't want Devito to have false hopes.
If he was looking for financial support, Aaron himself was poor as of now.
Devito was saddened to hear that. But he quickly turned back normal.
"Yes. I understand. Having you see my work is more than enough for me." Devito knew having even if Aaron didn't help in any other way, having the appreciation of a mage and having his approval towards his work would be a great motivation for him.
"Alright then. See you on the morrow."
With that Aaron finally walked away to his room.
