Shelter • three

"Cayden!" his sister jumped on him, a small smile formed upon my lips from seeing the reunion. The keys jingled loudly when I took a step, everyone stopped and looked at me.

I pulled it out from my pocket, waving it around. "Let's go some place safe."

Everyone nodded, preparing themselves to go outside of this lab. "Where would we even go?" Julia huffed, Jessica placed her hand on my shoulder.

"honestly, where isn't the question, we can go anywhere. It's which car does the key belong to." Jessica had a point. It'll be a while for us to know the car. Still, we had to take the risk.

We geared up, wrapping every exposed skin we can cover. A determined glow shined brightly in our eyes. I turned around, confirming everyone was prepared.

Taking a deep breath, I twist the doorknob. We made our way to the parking lot, maybe the car is there. It was quiet, a little too quiet for our liking.

We made our way pass the canteen, and what a grave mistake we did. At first, they didn't really notice us as we hid behind the wall. A loud clang echoed throughout the place, attracting the undead.

As fast as lightning, they moved towards us, trying their best to swarm us. Most of us didn't think twice before bolting away. Jessica hit any person standing in her way, not giving them a chance to touch her.

"Julia!" I heard Casey scream. I whipped my head around to see Julia defending my friend, Charlotte.

I should've kept an eye on her, I knew she was going to freeze up. It's not a bad thing, this is pretty traumatising anyways.

I jumped on the fallen bodies, my hands gripping the handle tightly as I swing it from side to side. I wrapped my finger around Charlotte's wrist, tugging her forward.

She snapped out of her thoughts quickly, her feet finally following mine. I jumped onto a hood of a random car, raising the keys up trying to detect the vehicle.

A car unlocking beeped from a distance. I started hopping towards the car while the others get the front gates opened.

I clicked the car keys one last time before jumping onto the car and opening the door. Before I could fully shut it, a bloody hand stopped it halfway, wiggling as it tried to grab me.

I kicked it out, slamming the door shut before revving the engines loudly. Without a second thought nor mercy, I stepped on the pedal, running over to those who I used to know. If they're truly undead, then they should survive getting run over.

The tires screeched to a halt as the others rushed in, it was a tight space and some had to sit on each others laps and the floor yet honestly I don't think anyone cared.

"Drive!" Yukio screamed as his eyes glanced nervously outside. I grabbed the steering wheel before driving away from the horrific scene.

"Cayden, where are we going?" His sister whispered as he tries to comfort her the best he can. He glanced down onto her, a thin line formed upon his lips.

"I don't know Casey." His eyes wavered as he looks at me through the mirror divider. I focus back on the road, thinking back the most safest place I could think off.

"we're going to my house." I told everyone, it's the safest place I could genuinely think off. It was on high grounds, a gated door, and it was a condominium.

I rammed through the pole that you had to use an access card, there's bigger problems to think about that that thing plus theres no more guards, surprisingly.

I parked inside the parking lot, going to the lowest levels so it'll be safer. Everyone clammered out of the car, some stretching their body, others were too scared to do anything.

"where's your family?" A soft voice asked me, I look down towards Julia, a shrug came off my shoulders, "they're on a cruise. Touring around the world I presume, honestly, they're probably safe out there somewhere."

A glint of jealousy shone through her eyes, I don't blame her, its not her fault that she doesn't know where her family is currently, all she can do is hope for the best.

Was I actually worried for my family? yes and no. I knew my parents are capable of themselves but they were still human, I still worry about their safety, hopefully they're all safe.

I pushed the door open, nudging my head to the side. "Lets go."

By habit, I pressed the lift button before realising that there might not be electricity, but much to my surprise, the lift doors dinged open.

I raise my eyebrow, hesitant to go in but decided to anyways, like I would climb seven flights of stairs and then climb another five.

We reached the front of my house, fishing for the keys inside my pocket hoping it didn't drop while I was running, much to my luck, it was still here.

I opened the door, stepping inside before locking the metal bars behind them.

"You can wash up, the filter cleans itself and theres water too." I told them, I had accidentally stumbled upon the papers to this house before while searching for my bag.

How they have running electricity due to the company having a lockdown if anything happens, how there were solar panels on the roof, how the water filters clean themselves, all these things that made our lives easier.

Everything seemed, sort of planned.

Jessica coughed, making me snap out of my thoughts, whipping my head to her. "I need some clothes."

I stood up and grabbed all the clothes I thought would fit everyone, leaving them to shower and all.

Yukio slumped himself on the chair beside the couch, a sigh escaping his lips, "what are we gonna do now?" his eyes looked at mine, an emotion clouded his eyes.

I look outside the window, pursing my lips, "survive."
