Skeleton's Struggle

Since the creation of the universe and the planets that populated it, each sapient race was given the "Deva system". This tool was believed to have been crafted by the benevolent Devas to aid humanity and its peers in combating the Asuras and their demonic creatures. For millennia, an unending war between the sapient races and monsters has raged on, each side detesting the other. All those who lived in this time believed that the universe exists due to and for the war between the opposing godly factions. They couldn't be more wrong. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Join Cal, an unwitting soul as he unravels the mysteries of the past and harnesses ancient powers long forgotten by even the gods; powers that hold together the fabric of the universe with its might. Cal could find himself an ant and wage war against an elephant, he could be a fish and challenge the Poseidon, he could be a breeze and take up arms against a hurricane. Cal is someone who in spite of all things, never gives up. That is where this protagonists' soul lies. A stubborn yet lovable fool who would wage war against the heavens if they decided to defy him. And defy him they shall. AN: Image not mine, found online, I shall remove it if need be later on.

Uninstalling?!

'It's… dark…'

'Did I make it?'

'Hello!?'

'Why can't I open my mouth? My entire body feels numb… ' Cal tried to pat himself down but he couldn't feel his arms.

'Am I… dead?!'

*DING*

Cal only saw an abyssal darkness before him, he couldn't turn his head nor move his body; it was as if someone had taken his eyes and thrown them into space. Cal started to panic as he had no idea of his location or if he was even alive, the boy was about to call on the Deva system when it announced his presence.

ALERT!

[Deva system uninstallation process activating]

'Wait what?! Uninstalling the Deva system?! Why??'

The Deva system was automatically installed onto every human child during their first visit to a temple or shrine. It was customary for each parent to help their child gain the gods' blessings and the system before their first year on this earth so as to reap the most benefits for the child's growth.

Ancient scriptures even talk of the system staying with the person into the afterlife, the system somehow being "uninstalled" was unheard of.

Even in this time of panic, the boy could not feel move or thrash about, this only elevated his sense of fear.

'I- I can't lose the system! If I don't have that then I might as well just die!'

'It's an integral part of being human! Why would I lose tha-'

ALERT!

[Asura system installation process activating]

-----

'What.'

Cal had no face at this moment in time but if he did, it would be contorted into a dumbfounded expression.

'No.'

'NONNNNNONONONNONONONONO!!'

'THE ASURA SYSTEM??! LIKE… THE ACTUAL ASURA SYSTEM?!'

'THE SYSTEM CREATED BY THE ASURAS TO EMPOWER THE MONSTERS?! NO WAY IN HELL AM LETTING THAT INTO MY SOUL! WAIT… AREN'T I DEAD?! THEN WHAT'S THE POINT OF ANY OF THIS ANYWA-'

'…'

'Oh.'

A long-forgotten memory emerged into Cal's mind.

'Oh shit.'

'I died in the dungeon…'

The theory proposed by the magical academies that your soul stays trapped in a dungeon if you die there was scoffed at by most adventures as flimsy pseudo-science, a fear mongering tactic to drive people away from dungeons and into their expensive academies. Cal didn't think those dumb mages ever said anything of value and resorted to laughing off such a scary thought.

'Even a broken clock is right twice a day huh?' Cal wouldn't give mages much credit even for this, to him they were just a bunch of academic cowards.

'Dammit man…'

'Am I gonna turn into an undead? A Zombie? Ghoul? Or maybe something uglier like a goblin? Ugh I hope I'm not a goblin… but actually, if I could pick, being a vampire sounds kinda cool, I heard that some girls think they're pretty ho-'

'Wait.'

'WHY AM I ADJUSTING TO THIS SO EASILY!'

Cal was a bit of an idiot.

'NO! I DON'T WANT THE ASURA SYSTEM, JUST PLEASE LET ME PASS AWAY PEACEFULLY AND I PROMISE I'LL PRAY TO WHICHEVER GOD LETS ME DO SO! OH PLEASE HOLY BUDDHA-'

[Problem is being assessed, please wait a few moments until a resolution is found…]

Cal was stupefied.

From birth he had been accustomed to treating the system as an extension of god's will; a tool created by the benevolent Devas in order for humans and other sapient species' to survive in a hellish world. Never before had the system encountered a problem it couldn't immediately solve.

Cal viewed the system with reverence but it's hesitation in a time of panic for the boy left questioning all he thought to be true.

'A similar precedent? Someone other than me had the same issue?'

'The… what?'

'Oyoyoy! What the hell kinda system is this!? No! Give me back the Deva system please!'

If Cal had a body, he'd be punching the pale blue screen that was changing his system, an act he had previously considered impossible.
