The first thing she noticed was the smoke, the heavy scent of fire and burning wood. The second was the overwhelming heat that despite being so far away, still woke her up.
They were floating freely on the water, apparently Luke had passed out from paddling too much. She did not blame him, not after seeing how he had helped her escape. He’d done enough, too much perhaps. Specially for a boy who claimed he did not love her.
She turned her head to find the root of the smoke. Her eyes widened.
From the distance, she saw it. The tower, Star Spire, consumed by red and blue flames that stretched as high as the sky itself.
No, they had not set the one place she considered home aflame. She did not want to believe it, but it was right in front of her eyes. No one would not survive, not with the tower made of stone.
