Asterin soon found out that her sister was quite a brave young woman. The words she’d said carried a meaning Asterin had not understood until Luke led her downstairs and she saw what was happening. It was no war, but it sure was a battle that took place before her eyes.
The gates had been struck open; women were dead in every corner. The same women, healers whom she had lived with. Dead because they refused to give her to the king’s men. Yet the living kept fighting without fearing what they could lose.
Asterin’s eyes teared. Serrina had so much will to say such statements so easily and deal with its consequences. A type of will that Asterin did not yet possess. It was hard to admit her terror, to tell Luke that after seeing this she wanted nothing but to run away. But he did the talking for her.
“You are not suited for battle.” She was not.
